North Florida 67, Coastal Carolina 37 Nov. 28, 2011 Jacksonville Fla. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Coastal Carolina women s basketball team suffered its first setback of the season with a loss at North Florida. The Chanticleers fall to 4-1 on the young season as North Florida improves to 1-5. North Florida used its aggressive, swarming defensive pressure to hold Coastal to a season-low 25.0 percent from the field and force 25 Chanticleer turnovers, which the Osprey s turned into 29 points. North Florida is a much better team than the record shows, said head coach Alan LeForce. Their play on the defensive end of the floor was exceptional. They forced us into some bad situations; we panicked and turned the ball over. For some reason, we did not come into this game as confident as we needed to be and that showed on the court tonight. The teams exchanged baskets in the early going of the first half with Coastal holding a two point advantage through the first five minutes of play. However, a seven-plus minute Chanticleer scoring drought coupled with a 14-2 North Florida run sent the teams into the locker room with the Ospreys leading During the run, UNF took advantage of seven Chanticleer turnovers and converted them into nine points. The halftime deficit was the first for the Chants this season. The Ospreys used a quick 11-4 run to open the second half to extend their lead to with 14:32 to play. Coastal responded with a 6-2 run of its own as Angelic Henry scored on two midrange jumpers and Shanika Maddox scored in the paint. Larkira Jones halted Coastal s momentum on the ensuing possession with a layup in the paint to bring the score to The Chants would cut the North Florida lead down to 17 several possessions later on a Henry layup, but came no closer as the Osprey s finished the game on a run. This was just one of those games where the further the game wore on the worse we seemed to shoot, said LeForce. We couldn t sustain any rhythm offensively and the players that usually step up in key situations struggled tonight. Kira Carter and Shatia Cole finished with a team-high eight points as Maddox led all players with nine caroms. North Florida was led by Brittany Kirkland s game-high 14 points on 6-of-17 from the floor and Fabiola Josil s eight boards. The senior center posted career-highs with five blocks, four steals and 32 minutes played. Epley s stellar defense helped Coastal force the Cougars into 27 turnover and an abysmal 22.2 shooting percentage. 2-0 for the Seventh Straight Season With the win over College of Charleston, Coastal has now started the season 2-0 for the seventh straight year and nine of the past 10. Coastal s lone set back came in the season opener against Anderson as the Chats fell by a final. 21 Dimes The Chants dished out 21 helpers in the season opener against Southern Virginia, marking the first time Coastal has finished with 20+ assists since recording 23 against Southern Virginia on Nov. 13, Shatia Cole paced Coastal with eight as AJ Jordan had three. Combined 37 in Collegiate DeBUT Freshmen guards Shatia Cole and AJ Jordan combined for 37 total points in their collegiate debuts as the pair lifted the Chants over Southern Virginia, Cole, a native of Myrtle Beach, scored a game-high 19 points as she went 6-of- 10 from the floor and 4-of-5 from beyond the arc. Jordan, who hails from Harriman, Tenn., nearly matched her classmate as she poured in 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting and 4-of-6 from deep. The duo accounted for all eight of the Chants triples on the night. Chanticleers in Home/Season Openers Coastal Carolina has traditionally started the season off on the right foot as winners of both their season and home openers. The program is all-time in season openers and 14-3 in home openers dating back to the season. Additionally, the Chants are 12-2 under LeForce in season openers and have not lost since the lid-lifter against Anderson. The Road Less Traveled... Literally The Chanticleers had better get accustomed to playing in front of the home fans as the team will only play eight of its first 11 games in Kimbel Arena. Additionally, Coastal will play South Carolina State at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center as part of the Crescent Bank Carolinas Challenge. The Chanticleers only take to the road twice before Jan. 7 - to Cullowhee, N.C. to take on the Western Carolina Catamounts and to Jacksonville, Fla. to square off with the Ospreys of North Florida. May LeForce Be With YOU Head coach Alan LeForce enters his 15th season at the helm of the Chanticleers holding a record at Coastal and a career record. LeForce s 202 wins with the Chants is 107 more than Gina Markland, Coastals second all-time winningest coach. Additionally, LeForce is the only coach in NCAA Division I history to win 200+ games as both a men s and women s head coach. ONLY 20 Triples AWAY Senior guard Olivia Irick has knocked down 73 triples throughout her career, including 33 in Irick needs only 20 more three pointers to equal Amber Rose ( ) for 10th all-time in the Coastal Carolina record book. Senior Leadership And a Youth Movement The Chanticleers feature four seniors in Olivia Irick (guard), Kira Carter (guard), Courtney Grambley (forward) and Taylor Epley (center). Conversely, Coastal has no juniors and a combined 11 freshmen and sophomores. Of the five members of the sophomore class, four played significant minutes during their freshmen campaigns. Forward Shanika Maddox started 12 games last season, including the first five, before suffering an injury. Classmate Angelic Henry saw increased playing time at crucial times late in the season and Kayla Cook proved to be a valiant deep threat. Good Bye KimbeL The season marks the final season Coastal Carolina basketball will call Kimbel Arena home as the programs move into the new Student Recreation and Convocation Center next fall. The 1,039 seat Kimbel Arena has been the home of the Chanticleers since The Student Recreation and Convocation Center will seat more than 3,300 fans for basketball and volleyball and over 4,000 for graduation and other special events. The building will also house offices and locker rooms for the men s and women s basketball and volleyball programs. 4

A Chanticleer (SHON-ti-cleer) gives Coastal Carolina University one of the most unique nicknames in all of sports. Chanticleer comes from Chaucer s Canterbury Tales and came to Coastal Carolina when the University was a member of the University of South Carolina system. A Chanticleer is a rooster who rules the barnyard with cunning and wit. His competitiveness never wanes as he battles to the end, using his brains to come out on top every time.
