4 Last Time Out... Coastal Carolina 64, Charleston Southern 56 Jan. 5, 2013 Conway, S.C. The HTC Center CONWAY - AJ Jordan scored a career-high 21 points, including 15 in the second half, to lead Coastal Carolina to a win over Lowcountry rival Charleston Southern in a Saturday matinee at The HTC Center. Jordan finished the game 10-of-13 from the floor and 1-of-1 from the line to go along with a team-high nine boards. Katelyn Connor joined Jordan in double figures with 12 points. Charleston Southern was led by Lakeitha Alston s 17 points, each coming in the second half. Alston also pulled down 12 boards to record the first double-double against the Chants since Converse s Samira Gillcrese did so on Dec. 13, The win snaps the Chanticleers five-game losing skid and evens the squad at 7-7 on the season and 2-2 in Big South play. The loss knocks Charleston Southern to 5-7 overall and 0-3 in league play. Coastal fell behind quickly to start the contest as Charleston Southern s Erin Bratcher opened the scoring with a pair of 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions. The Bucs pulled out to as much as a seven-point lead at 16-9 with 13:15 left showing on the clock. Coastal then stifled the visitors over the ensuing 8:16 en route to taking a lead. Kayla Cook and Jordan scored on mid-range jumpers to start the run, but it was sophomore forward Savanah Pippin who showcased her skills in closing the run and giving the Chants their first lead of the game. Pippin first put up a shot just in front of the rim that proceeded to spin around the iron several times before falling through. She then stepped back and sank a jumper from the elbow following a Chanticleer offensive rebound. The Bucs Shay Jones hit a trey from the corner and DJ Fowler connected on a pair at the line to push Charleston Southern back in front, 21-19, but the Chants once again responded. This time Coastal used an 11-0 run over the final 4:15 to take a nine-point lead into the intermission. The run featured a jumper from the right corner by Alexx Puckett, a triple by Cook and a jumper by Jordan. Reserve Jena Hamrick used a strong move down the lane for a layup and DJ Hunter banked a shot off the glass to finish the run. Jones twice pulled the Buccaneers to within five points in the first three minutes after the break, but Coastal answered back each time to stay firmly ahead on the scoreboard. Coastal then pulled out to a game-high 13 point lead at with 15:19 to play thanks to an 8-0 run. Alston then took over the game for a spurt, scoring nine points of an 11-2 Charleston Southern run to pull the visitors to within four points. However, Jordan sank a pair of baskets and Connor converted an old fashioned threepoint play to push Coastal back to a double-digit lead. Charleston Southern outscored Coastal 14-9 over the next six-plus minutes before a Puckett free throw put Coastal up with 2:45 to play. Anicia Dotson hit two from the free-throw line, pulling Charleston Southern with five. But it would be too late as Coastal controlled several rebounds in the game s waning minutes and Charleston Southern was forced to foul. For the game, Coastal Carolina shot 26-of-61 (42.6 percent) and outscored Charleston Southern in the paint. The Buccaneers shot 16-of-56 (28.6 percent) from the floor and held a 9-6 lead in second-chance points. ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK Driving the lane for an easy layup has been no easy task for Coastal Carolina s opponents this season as the Chanticleers average 4.3 rejections per game. Katelyn Connor paces the Chants averaging 1.62 rejections per contest while Savanah Pippin averages The duo rank fourth and ninth in the Big South, respectively, in the blocked shots category. JORDAN HEATING UP AJ Jordan was on fire last week as she scored 13 points at Campbell and a career-high 21 against Charleston Southern. Jordan, who made 10 shots from the floor against Charleston Southern to become the first Chant to make 10-plus field goals against a Division I opponent since Sydnei Moss did so on March 25, 2011 (also against Charleston Southern), finished the week shooting 64 percent from the floor. The sophomore guard also recorded 17 rebounds on the week to go along with her four assists and two steals. 4 I GUESS THIS PLACE WILL DO Coastal Carolina is off to a 6-1 record in its new home, The HTC Center, this season. The Chants were a force to be reckoned with at Kimbel Arena last season, posting a 12-3 record in the arena s final season, and it appears that good mojo has carried over to the program s new digs. Since the season Coastal Carolina holds an record in Conway (its last 120 home games). MAKING THEM EARN IT Coastal Carolina enters Thursday s game at Campbell ranked second in the Big South and 58th of 343 teams in the NCAA conceding only 55.4 points per game. The Chants have always been know for their defensive intensity under head coach Alan LeForce and this season is no different. Through 12 games Coastal is forcing opponents into 20.5 turnovers per contest and holding shooters to only 34.5 percent from the floor. OPENING THE NEW YEAR The first game of the New Year has been kind to the Chanticleers since the season. The Chants are an impressive 19-8 in the first game of a new calendar year. Head coach Alan Leforce holds a 12-3 record in such games during his 15-plus season tenure. PUCKETT NOTCHES CAREER-HIGH Forward Alexx Puckett turned in a career-high in the points category against North Florida on Dec. 19. The Indianapolis, Ind., native score 14 points on 6-of-11 from the floor, including 1-of-1 from beyond the arc. Not known for her long-range shot coming into the season, Puckett has added a great stroke from 3-point land to her game. The junior doesn t attempt many treys, but when she does they fall. She is currently a perfect 6-of-6 from deep on the season. 2 IN 23.5 Coastal Carolina will tipoff two games 23.5 hours apart as the Chanticleers close out their second four games in seven days stretch of the season. The Chants travel to South Carolina State for a 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday then return home to the Grand Strand to take on North Florida at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center at 5 p.m. on Wednesday. Coastal will then take a much-deserved break for the following nine days before returning from the Christmas holiday to resume Big South Conference play at Presbyterian College on Dec. 29. JELLY TIME Angelica Henry (affectionately referred to as Jelly by her teammates) turned in a career performance in Coastal s win against Converse. The junior guard scored a career-high 24 points on an impressive 10-of-13 (76.9 percent) from the field. Her 24 points were the most scored in a game by a Chanticleer since Sydnei Moss turned in a 25-point performance against Liberty in the quarterfinals

7 CONNOR S CAREER DAY Center Katelyn Connor turned in a career-best performance against Gardner-Webb as she tallied her first career double-double. The junior posted career-highs with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Connor shot 4-of-7 from the field and 6-of-12 from the charity stripe. Each of her four offensive rebounds led to secon-chance points for the Chanticleers. She also set her career-high with a game-high four blocked shots, including a key block on an Olivia Parker layup attempt with 16 seconds to play. THE CHANTS IN BIG SOUTH OPENERS Coastal Carolina holds a record in Big South Conference openers since joining the league for the season. The Chanticleers are 6-10 all-time when opening conference play away from Conway. BRINGING THE D Since veteran head coach Alan LeForce came to Coastal Carolina prior to the season, the Chanticleers have been know for their defensive prowess. And this season is no exception. The Chants rank in the top half of the Big South in every defensive category, including the top spot in scoring defense (48.0 ppg) and 3-point field goal defense (.200). NOT A BAD DEBUT Freshman Megan Pittman made her collegiate debut on Nov. 24 at IPFW after missing the first five games of the season recovering from an injury. The heralded Liberty, Ky., product scored four points and pulled down three rebounds, while also adding a blocked shot in her nine minutes of play. And guards Shatia Cole, AJ Jordan and Angelica Henry have not disappointed. Jordan leads Coastal in scoring averaging 13.0 per outing followed by Cole s 12.6 and Henry s 11.8 points per game. In addition, Henry leads the Chants on the glass, averaging 6.6 board per contest. 4 IN 7 Coastal Carolina will play its fourth game in the last seven days against IPFW. The Chants started its grueling weeklong stretch with a win over Western Carolina on Saturday, Nov. 17 and followed with back-to-back blowout victories against Columbia (SC) and Southern Virginia on Nov. 19 and 20. ON THE DEFENSIVE Through the first two games this season the Chanticleers have forced their opponents into 45 turnovers, 21 of which have come by way of steals. In addition Coastal has dominated the defensive glass, hauling in 66 of their 101 boards on the defensive end. WHAT SOPHOMORE SLUMP? Sophomores AJ Jordan and Shatia Cole are unaware of the superstitious sophomore slump that tends to befall athletes. Through Coastal s two games, the duo led the team in scoring as Jordan averages 10.5 points and Cole 8.5. Furthermore, Jordan has already set or tied five statistical career-highs this season. YOUNG, SEASONED CHANTS The Chanticleers look like an extremely young team on paper without a senior on the roster. However, the Chants are a seasoned bunch, returning eight players who have seen significant action in their careers All-Big South Freshmen Team selection Shatia Cole returns for her second season after ranking second on the team with 10.5 points per game a year ago. Guards AJ Jordan and Angelica Henry, who both made numerous starts last season, should also be in the fold as key contributers. Junior guard Kayla Cook will look to have a breakout season after 5.2 points and 3.1 rebounds per game as a sophomore. In all, the young Chants count 268 games played and 39 starts between them. LeForce s 215 wins on the Chanticleer side are 120 more than Gin Markland, Coastal s second all-time winningest coach. Additionally, LeForce is the only coach in NCAA Division I history to win 200-plus games as both a men s and women s head coach. TOUGH STRETCHES Coastal s schedule features a pair of tough stretches of games. The first comes after playing only two games to start the season. The Chants third, fourth, fifth and sixth contests of the season all fall within a seven-day time frame. Coastal first plays Western Carolina (Nov. 17) followed by Columbia College (Nov. 19) and Southern Virginia (20) all 7

HELLO THE HTC CENTER After spending the entirety of its first 37 seasons of competition playing at Kimbel Arena with a capacity of 1,039, Coastal Carolina has moved into a newly constructed home. The HTC Center boasts a seating capacity of 3,212 along with multiple locker rooms and office suites. In addition, The HTC Center will also play host to the VisitMyrtleBeach.com Big South Basketball Championship for the next three seasons, giving the Chanticleers a distinct home-court advantage come tournament time. NEW BIG SOUTH FORMAT With the addition of Longwood as the Big South s 11th women s basketball playing member on July 1, 2012, the league women s basketball schedule will have a new look. Instead of playing each member institution at both home and on the road, Coastal will play Gardner-Webb, Liberty, Presbyterian College, Charleston Southern, High Point, Longwood, Radford and UNC Asheville in a home and home series.
