WHY WE ARE THE EXPLORERS La Salle University s nickname the Explorers was announced by the Collegian in March 1932 as the winning entry to a student contest. However, in the fall of 1931, a Baltimore sportswriter covering the La Salle/St. John s (Md.) football game erroneously alluded to La Salle as being named for the French explorer La Salle, not St. John Baptist de La Salle. Were the two events related? We ll never know for sure. 2

4 Tom Gola Arena Over 50 years ago, in Tom Gola s senior season of , the La Salle University men s basketball team played the majority of its home games in Wister Hall, where the campus bookstore currently is located. Since that season, the Explorers have called many sites off-campus home, however all of that changed on February 21, 1998 with a victory over Virginia Tech. It took $6.3 million and 280 calendar days from groundbreaking on May 17, 1997 to return the men s basketball team to 20th & Olney full time. In the last home game of the season, the Explorers defeated the Hokies, 74-64, before a sellout crowd, in an arena that went from approximately 1,000 seats to the current capacity of 3,400 a 340% increase. Tom Gola Arena is the home of the Explorers and the centerpiece of the Hayman Center. On November 21, 1998, La Salle officially named the arena after the legendary alum of the school in a ceremony at halftime that included most of the great La Salle ballplayers over the years. That night, the La Salle Men s and Women s Basketball teams played a twinbill - the women defeated Delaware State, 84-59; the men beat Howard, The women s team has been playing at Hayman Hall since its inception in However, during the renovation, the Explorers played at Bucky Harris Gym on the campus of Philadelphia Textile (Philadelphia University). On February 1, 1998, they returned home for the first game at the Hayman Center, a loss to Virginia Tech, which was preceded by the annual alumnae game. In the 15-plus seasons that the women have played at Tom Gola Arena, the Explorers have played 236 games and have a record. They have had nine winning seasons, which includes a season-best mark of 10-3 in the and seasons, and three seasons in which they went 9-5 ( , , and ) along with 8-4 in The Explorers have played many memorable games in the building, but none match the excitement on February 4, 2005, when the women ended a 24-year drought (24 straight losses) by defeating the George Washington Colonials, As far as points scored in Tom Gola Arena, no woman comes close to the 44 points put up by Rasual Butler on February 23, 2002, against Rhode Island, but Jill Marano did hold the women s mark with 30 points versus Richmond on January 23, 2003 for almost four years. On Jan. 9, 2007, Fordham s Lisa Carrol set the mark at 33 points. Just over six weeks later, Carlene Hightower came within a basket of tying Carrol s mark (scoring 31 in a upset win over Charlotte) but did set a La Salle school record with the output on Feb. 22, Brittany Wilson tied the 31-point mark on Jan. 11, 2012, in front of well over 1,000 spectators in the annual Kids Day game. In the season, Margaret Elderton increased the La Salle record by one, with her 32-point performance Feb. 6, 2008 versus Massachusetts. It took an exciting overtime game for Saint Louis Theresa Lisch to set the women s arena record with a 37-point performance on Jan. 17, 2009 in a Billikens victory. Amy Griffin set a new La Salle record this past season, going for 33 points in a win over Saint Joseph s in February.
