These are just a few words that come to mind when talking with Jim Jabir. On April 8, 2003, the University of Dayton introduced Jabir as the women s basketball team s eighth head coach and first male head coach in the history of the program. After one season as an assistant, Jabir became the head coach at Buffalo State during the season at the age of 24. He led that team to a record and guided the Bengals to the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) championship and an appearance in the Division III Tournament. The Flyers have been one of the most improved teams in the nation under the direction of Jabir. UD had the fourth best single-season turnaround in the nation in the season with an improvement of nine wins over the previous campaign. Jabir and Dayton continued the trend in with an improvement of five more wins, giving UD the second best improvement over a two-year span in the nation. I am going to be the hardest working coach out there, states Jabir. I want people to fear playing the University of Dayton. The season also saw two different Flyers earn Atlantic 10 All-Conference accolades as UD finished sixth in a conference that sent five teams to postseason play. Dayton also advanced to the Quarterfinals of the A-10 Tournament and finished with a winning record for the first time in five years. Jabir came to UD after spending one season as an assistant at Colorado. In his last season at CU, the Buffaloes (24-8) advanced to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament and were ranked as high as 23rd in the ESPN/ Coaches Poll and 24th in the Associated Press Poll. Jabir was primarily responsible for the development of CU s post players, including the Buffaloes first-ever First Team All-Big 12 selection. Jabir had been a head coach for 16 seasons prior to coaching at CU with an all-time career mark of His broad coaching experience ranges from the Big East Conference to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. The Brooklyn, NY native began his coaching career as an assistant at Nazareth College ( ). As a Head Coach at Buffalo State ( ), Jabir was instrumental in leading the Bengals to a 23-3 slate, the SUNYAC title, a 22-game winning streak, an NCAA regional tournament appearance and a national ranking (No. 3) during the season. Jabir matriculated to Siena College from Buffalo State, where he served as the head coach of the Saints for three seasons ( ) and compiled a record. Jabir s teams posted three consecutive winning seasons. In his first season, Jabir was responsible for the development of Siena s first-ever Freshman All- American. After his stint at Siena, Jabir spent six years at Marquette University becoming one of the most successful coaches in the history of the program, elevating the Golden Eagles into the national spotlight. After posting a 7-20 record during his inaugural year ( ) at Marquette, Jabir guided his team to four consecutive winning seasons, two 20-plus winning seasons and three post-season appearances, including back-to-back bids to the NCAA Tournament. In , Marquette won the Great Midwest Conference Tournament, the first tournament championship in school history. This followed the campaign in which Jabir compiled a program-best 22-7 overall record and its first trip to the NCAA Tournament. Before his stint at Colorado, Jabir was at the helm of Providence College for six seasons, During his last three years, the Friars record improved with each season and in his final season, the Friars finished overall and eighth of 14 schools in the prestigious Big East, its highest finish ever since the Big East went to a one division format. Jabir, tabbed by Basketball Times as one of the Top 10 up-and-coming coaches in the country, was a twotime Reebok/Great Midwest Conference Coach of the Year. Jabir is a 1984 graduate of Nazareth College in Rochester, New York, where he received a degree in English. Miller came to Dayton and taught Jabir and his staff the new system before the Flyers 10-day trip to Europe last summer. The Flyers had the fourth most blocks in UD single-season history and the third most in the A-10. Dayton also ranked 80th nationally in blocks. The starting lineup changed just three times and seven different players appeared in every game last season. Ten of the 12 active players on the UD roster have played in all seven games this season. J STRONG-ER THAN EVER Jennifer Strong is among the most athletic players in the A-10 with the ability to create her own shot while also being one of the team s best defenders. She also led Canada to a third place finish at the 2006 FIBA Americas U20 Championship. Keil is a Third Team All-State pick out of New Jersey who broke the Sparta High School record for blocks in a season with 121. Lindsay was an All-Conference basketball player during her freshman, sophomore, and junior seasons out of Chicago. Guin played in 28 games for NE Oklahoma A&M last season. She finished eighth nationally amongst JC players in assists (5.9 apg). Brown will sit out the due to NCAA transfer rules after joining the team from the University of Cincinnati. Last season, she played in 28 games and averaged 19.3 minutes per game, 3.5 points per game and 4.5 rebounds per game. GUIN GETS IT DONE JC transfer Kathy Guin provided a spark for the Flyers in the season-opener at Louisville. She followed with 14 points and five assists while playing just 19 minutes vs. Memphis on Nov. 11. Guin is averaging 8.3 points per game and 2.2 assists per game this season overall. GUIN GETS DAYTON PAST AKRON Kathy Guin had an assist and the game-winning three-point basket in the final 40 seconds of the game as Dayton tallied a co meback win at Akron on Nov. 26. Guin finished with just five points and four assists on the afternoon, but dished out an assist on a layup by Brittany Holterman with 40 seconds left to knot the score. Then after Akron took the lead on a pair of free throws, Guin came down the court and drilled a three-pointer with 8.2 left on the clock to give UD a one-point victory. LINDSEY GOOD FOR A DOZEN Freshman guard Aundrea Lindsey posted 12 points while shooting a perfect 3-for-3 from the field in just her second collegiate game on Nov.11 against Memphis. She was also 5-of-6 from the free throw line. KEIL A TALL ORDER FOR FLYER OPPONENTS At 6-5, freshman Kelly Keil is among the tallest players ever to wear a Dayton uniform. She is tied with Bonnie Quelhorst ( ) and Theresa Yingling ( ) as the tallest Flyers ever. Keil has been a tall order for opposing defenses so far this season with four points and four rebounds in 15 minutes played against Memphis. A-10 RIVALS - INTERNATIONAL TEAMMATES UD freshman Kendel Ross and UMass junior Alisha Tatham were teammates on the Canadian Junior National Team which finished third over the summer at the FIBA Americas U20 Championships and qualified for the 2007 FIBA U21 World Championships. Ross averaged 8.4 points and 3.2 rebounds per game while Tatham led the Canadians averaging 9.6 points per game. The duo will face off when the Flyers host the Minutewomen on Feb. 22 at UD Arena. ROSS PROVES TO BE A FINE IMPORT Kendel Ross has contributed in many ways off the UD bench this season. Her best game of the year came on Nov. 11 in the rout of Memphis. Ross finished with eight points four rebounds, two blocks, a steal and an assist in a team-high 25 minutes. WOMEN'S BASKETBALL INKS THREE DURING EARLY SIGNING PERIOD Future Flyers Will Join The Roster in University of Dayton head women's basketball coach Jim Jabir announced the addition of three players to the Flyer basketball family during the early signing period. April Austin, Kristin Daugherty and Ebony Gainey each made formal commitments to the program by signing National Letters of Intent and will be eligible to play for the Flyers beginning with the season. The group has been touted as the 29th best recruiting class in the nation according to the Blue Star Report at That ranking was the highest of any school in the Atlantic 10 Conference and was ahead of schools from conferences such as the ACC, BIG EAST, Big Ten, Big 12, Patriot, SEC and WAC. "We are really pleased with the class," Jabir said. "This group will impact our program immediately in much the same way as this year's freshmen class is doing for us now. Our success on the court has helped us attract better talent each year and this class is another example of that development." Austin, a 5-7 guard from North Catholic High School in Pittsburgh, PA, has led the Trojanettes to a record over the past three seasons. She was tabbed as one of the top freshmen in the WPIAL and has led North Catholic High School to the WPIAL playoffs in each of the last three seasons. Austin also led the PA Hoop Stars U16 squad to a fifth place finish at the 2005 AAU National Championships on Orlando, Fla. "Brings a lot of basketball knowledge to the program," Jabir said. "She knows the game very well and Pittsburgh produces really great women's basketball each year. April has a great attitude toward the game and she makes smart decisions." Daugherty, a forward from River View High School in Warsaw, Ohio, was named Ms. Ohio by the Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association last year as a junior. She was also named Ohio's AP Co-Player of the Year as River View capped a 26-1 season with a State Title. A versatile athlete, Daugherty also plays volleyball at River View. "Kristin is an all-around player who is very smart on the court," Jabir said. "Her entire family in involved with her program at the high school level and that support has helped to make her one of the best players in Ohio." Gainey, a 6-0 guard from Dayton's Medowdale High School, was an Honorable Mention All-Ohio pick last season as a junior after averaging 15.4 points per game. She was named the SWPOL Player of the Year as a sophomore after averaging nearly a triple-double with 10.8 points, 10.3 rebounds and 8.0 assists per game. "Ebony is one of the best high school players in the City of Dayton, if not the best player," Jabir said. "She is a super athletic lefty who can get to the rim and do a lot of different things. I think she is going to be an exciting player to watch. Hopefully, she will open the door for other local players to make that decision."
