The Quakers and the Crimson split their season series, with Penn coming away with a 20-point victory inside The Palestra, with Harvard avenging its loss with a three-point win in Cambridge. The Crimson featured three players on the All-Ivy teams, including a first-team selection for sophomore Katie Benzan and second-team selections for Taylor Rooks and Jeannie Boehm. All three average double-figure scoring for Harvard. Rookie of the Year Eleah Parker was named the Ivy League Rookie of the Year by unanimous decision, while also earning a spot on second-team All-Ivy. Parker is the first freshman to earn All-Ivy status for Penn since Stipanovich in Parker finished the regular season averaging 11.8 points and 8.0 rebounds per game, ranking first among all league freshmen in both categories. The rookie also ranked fourth overall in the league in field goal percentage, shooting at a 48 percent clip. As much as she evolved offensively throughout the year, featuring 18 games in double-digit scoring, Parker continued to improve all season defensively, finishing the regular season at fifth in the league, averaging 2.0 blocks per game. Parker tallied six double-doubles on the year, including four against Ivy League opponents. Watch Out for Nwokedi In addition to Parker s nod as Rookie of the Year, two others from Penn earned All-Ivy status in Michelle Nwokedi and Anna Ross. Nwokedi was named first-team All-Ivy for the third time in her career, becoming just the third player from Penn to earn three first-team placements. Nwokedi proved a consistent force for Penn all season long, arguably the most versatile player on the court for the Red and Blue, impacting the game offensively, defensively, both in the paint and beyond the 3-point line. The senior captain from Missouri City, Texas wrapped up the regular season averaging 12.1 points and 8.7 rebounds per game, numbers that shot up to 12.5 and 9.9 in conference play. When not scoring the ball herself, Nwokedi proved adept at providing opportunities for others, averaging nearly three assists per game against Ivy foes. She continued her climb up both the Penn and league ranks in blocks, now owning 301 in her four years, becoming the first in Ivy League history with over 1,000 points, 1,000 rebounds and 300 blocks in a career. Nwokedi averaged 2.4 swats per game, tied for third in the league. Nwokedi featured 18 games in double figures this season, including a career-high 30 point night against Harvard in February. The senior ranks third all-time at Penn with 39 career double-doubles, including seven this season. Ross the Boss Ross s second-team placement is the second straight for the senior captain and third All- Ivy accolade overall. Ross finished the regular season averaging 7.8 points per game and a team-leading 5.0 assists each contest, ranking second in the Ivy League in the category. Ross led the conference with an assist/turnover ratio of 2.2, good for 40th nationally. Earlier this season, Ross moved into first all-time at Penn in career assists, now owning 476 dimes to her name, good for eighth all-time in the Ivy League. Against Rhode Island, Ross became the first from Penn since 2007 to notch a double-double on points/assists, the first of her career, while against Villanova Ross delivered the game-winning last-second layup to defeat the Wildcats for the first time since Defensively, Ross nabbed an average of 1.7 steals each contest. Ross currently ranks tied for the program record with 116 career starts, set to break the mark at the Ivy League Tournament. Statistics Flash statistics, play-by-play, halftime and postgame statistics are distributed during and after each contest. A full statistical pack will be available following the game. Postgame Interview Policy Following the end of each home basketball game, Penn women s basketball coach Mike McLaughlin and selected players will typically meet the media outside the women s basketball locker room, located in the southwest corner of The Palestra. Visiting coaches and players can be requested through the athletic communications staff. The Penn locker room is closed to the media at all times. Plenty of Awards Parker has won eight Ivy League Rookie of the Week awards, two Player of the Week awards, two USBWA National Freshman of the Week awards and two Big 5 Player of the Week honors. Ivy League Picks Parker... x10! Parker has earned weekly honors from the Ivy League 10 times this season, including eight Rookie of the Week awards and two Player of the week honors. Parker is the first to win consecutive Rookie of the Week honors since Michelle Nwokedi won four-straight in the season and is the first freshman from Penn to be named Player of the Week since Sydney Stipanovich in Parker now ranks tied for third all-time with her eight Rookie of the Year accolades, tied for second in program history with Stipanovich. Making Waves Nationally Not just the Ivy League has taken note of Parker s success this season. The rookie has won two USBWA National Freshman of the Week honors, becoming only the second player to win multiple times since the inception of the award in the season. Coaches vs. Cancer 3-Point Challenge The Quakers finished eighth nationally in the American Cancer Society for the 3-Point Challenge, raising a total of $3,265. Big 5 Champions With a victory at Temple, the Quakers claimed a share of the Big 5 Championship, their second in program history. After dropping their first city contest at La Salle earlier this year, Penn rallied to defeat Saint Joseph s (57-50), Villanova (79-77) and the Owls, with each Big 5 game coming on the road this year for the Red and Blue. Enter Coach McLaughlin... Under head coach Mike McLaughlin, the Quakers have won 12 Big 5 games in the last seven years, including 10 victories within the last five years. Prior to that, Penn won a total of seven Big 5 games between (15 seasons). In all, in the 30 years prior to the Coach McLaughlin era, Penn won just 14 Big 5 games. He already owns the school record with 12 career Big 5 victories. Coach McLaughlin is the first coach in Penn history to defeat all four Big 5 schools. Ivy League Success This season marked the fifth-straight year that Penn won 11 or more Ivy League games. Prior to that, Penn had won 11 or more Ivy League games only twice in its entire history. The program record was set in when the Quakers went undefeated at Power Six History Penn has traditionally played a challenging non-conference schedule since Mike McLaughlin took the helm in , and that trend has continued this season. In fact, the Quakers have played five nonconference top-15 teams in the last seven seasons (#3 Notre Dame in , #5 Notre Dame in , #4 Tennessee , #14 Duke in , #3 Notre Dame in ). Among non-league foes, Penn has scheduled its share of teams from the power six conferences. En route to the Ivy title in , the Quakers earned their first-ever win over an ACC opponent with a dramatic win at Miami (Fla). Other power conference opponents in McLaughlin s tenure include Northwestern, Iowa State, Virginia, and Duke as well as the annual Big 5 matchups with Villanova and Temple. This season, Penn has battled two ACC foes in the non-conference, including another highly touted matchup with #3/2 Notre Dame at The Palestra and the first game since 1983 against Georgia Tech in The Bahamas as part of the Junkanoo Jam. Magic Number: 60 The statistic that may most indicate a Penn win or loss? 60 points. Penn has won 84 of its last 85 regular season games when scoring at least 60 points. Since head coach Mike McLaughlin took over at Penn, the Quakers are (.912) when they reach that number (86-3 over the last four seasons). In comparison, the Quakers are just (.288) when they ve scored less than 60 points under Coach McLaughlin. The trend continues defensively. Over the last seven seasons, the Red and Blue are (.354) when allowing 60 points or more. But when holding opponents under that number, the Quakers hold a healthy winning record of (.804). All-Time Wins Leader Coach Mike McLaughlin became Penn s all-time wins leader, surpassing Lois Ashley s mark of 128 wins in 12 seasons with his 129th win at Dartmouth (3/3/17). The head man now sits with an all-time record of (.588) at Penn. In addition, McLaughlin earned the 500th win in his career during the season, and currently ranks 26th among active Division I coaches with 560 victories. Can t Get to 5-0? It s a No-Go. The Quakers have won 58-straight games when holding their opponents to 49 points or less. The last time a team defeated the Quakers despite being held under 50 points was January 16, 2013, a loss to Big 5 rival Villanova. Longest Winning Streaks Year... After a 2-26 campaign in his first year along The Palestra sidelines, Penn has won 11, 13, 18, 22, 21, 24, and 22 games in succession during his next seven years. In addition, a player from Penn has captured Ivy League Player of the Year three of the last four years, Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year three of the last four years, Ivy League Rookie of the Year two of the last four years, and Coach McLaughlin has earned the past two Ivy League Coach of the Year honors. A Look at Penn s Recent Postseason Experience Prior to this school-record stretch of five-straight postseason appearances, Penn had never been to the postseason in back-to-back years. In 2013, Penn posted the first two postseason wins in program history with home wins over Howard (65-60) and Fairfield (49-48) in the opening two rounds of the Women s Basketball Invitational. Penn then lost in the semifinals at Detroit, The following season, the Red and Blue led fifth-seeded Texas in the first round of the NCAA Tournament by as many as 15 in the first half (32-17), and seven at halftime (38-31), but ultimately fell, In 2014, Penn earned its first-ever WNIT berth and victory with a home win over Hofstra before a close second-round loss at The Palestra to Big 5 rival Temple. The Quakers earned the No. 10 seed for the NCAA Tournament and fell to the University of Washington, 65-53, in College Park, Md. in the First Round. Last year, Penn entered the NCAA Tournament as a 12 seed, and at one point led No. 5 Texas A&M by 21 in the fourth quarter before getting edged by the Aggies, Trey Streak Penn has made a three in every game dating back to a home loss to Harvard on Feb. 6, 2010 a span of 241 games. All together, this contingent of seniors owns over 3,500 points in their three-plus seasons with the Red and Blue, as well as over 1,750 rebounds and 930 assists. Controlling the Tempo Penn has held 12 of its 27 opponents to only two fast break points or less, including limiting Lafayette, Saint Joseph s, Villanova, Gwynedd Mercy, Columbia and Brown to zero, a key example of the Quaker tempo taking effect. Taking Care of the Rock Behind Anna Ross Ivy League leading assist/turnover ratio of 2.3, the Quakers rank fourth nationally in fewest turnovers. Penn prides itself on playing a disciplined style of basketball, also ranking fifth in the country in fewest fouls. After scoring 84 against Rhode Island and 82 against VCU, the Quakers notched 80+ points in back-to-back contests for the first time since The Red and Blue have tied a McLaughlin-era record first by hitting 13 3-pointers against URI, NJIT and at Brown and then again by posting 89 points vs. GMU. Penn scored 88 points vs. Brown, its most against an Ivy League opponent since Feb. 2, Big Margins, Big Wins 13 of of Penn s 14 Ivy League contests this season were decided by at least 11 points. The Quakers earned two wins in the Ancient Eight by over 30 points for the first time in program history (at Brown, at Columbia). New Kids on the Block Five freshmen joined the University of Pennsylvania women s basketball team this season, as Tori Crawford, Chrissy DiCindio, Michae Jones, Katie Kinum and Eleah Parker all chose to don the Red and Blue. The class consists of two guards, two forwards and a center and hails from four different states. Both Kinum and DiCindio made the short trip from New Jersey, Crawford came from Maryland, Parker from North Carolina, and Jones from Louisiana. The five new additions bring a wealth of awards and accolades with them, including three First Team All-State accolades from Parker, two-time county Player of the Year honors from Kinum, three-time Second Team All-State selections for Jones, conference Player of the Year award for DiCindio and three-time All-Independent School League for Crawford. Climbing the Ladder Did you think Nwokedi only ranked in the top-10 in program history in scoring, blocks and double-doubles? Well, you d be wrong. The senior captain is also making a push in the Quaker record books in both career rebounds and career free throws made. Nwokedi currently owns 1,012 career boards, the second in Penn history to own over 1,000 rebounds, while ranking fifth in career makes from the charity stripe with 345. Nwokedi is also threatening the leaderboard in career field goals made, ranking sixth with 525. More than Michelle Don t be fooled, despite her many accolades, Penn boasts a deeper attack than just Nwokedi, and that s shown in the record books. Lauren Whitlatch ranks sixth in Penn history in made 3-pointers (despite sitting out 17 games last season) at 157 for her career, while Anna Ross isn t far behind with 115 on her resume. Both Ross and Beth Brzozowski are poised to enter Penn s list of all-time bests from the free throw line, as Brzozowski currently owns a career percentage of.831, while Ross boasts one of.792, marks that would rank first and fourth respectively if the season ended today. Success from Deep Lauren Whitlatch has led the charge for a historic shooting year for the Quakers, as Penn has set the program record in 3-pointers made with 217 and counting. Penn has hit pointers 10 times this year and is undefeated in those games. Offseason News and Notes - The Quakers hired Ashley Robinson as an assistant coach in late August. Robinson joins the program after spending her first year as a coach at Holy Family. Robinson brings a plethora of playing experience to the Quakers as a former studentathlete at St. Joseph s University where she helped lead the Hawks to two NCAA Tournament berths. McLaughlin was hired as the eighth head coach in program history on April 24, A three-time Philadelphia Big 5 Coach of the Year, McLaughlin has a career record of (.770) and has posted 20 or more wins in 18 of his 22 seasons as a head coach, including six 30-win seasons. The Philadelphia native has won 13 conference titles, is a 17-time Conference Coach of the Year and won his 500th game as a head coach during the season. McLaughlin has built the Penn women s basketball program into an Ivy League powerhouse. The Quakers have won 20 games in four consecutive seasons for the first time in program history, clinched three Ivy League championships and NCAA Tournament berths in 2014, 2016 and 2017 and won the program s first-ever Big 5 title in Penn has reached the postseason in each of the last five seasons (a school record) and just completed the winningest six-year stretch in program history. The season continued the culture of success known during the McLaughlin era, where the Quakers posted a 22-8 overall record and 13-1 mark in Ivy League games. The Red and Blue won the inaugural Ivy League Tournament with a decisive win over Princeton, the third over the Tigers in , and booked their trip to the NCAA Tournament as the No. 12 seed. Penn led Texas A&M wall-to-wall in the NCAA First Round and gave the Aggies all they could handle in Los Angeles, but the upset bid fell just short with a defeat at Pauley Pavilion. The Quakers once again saw several individuals earn accolades for their performances during the season, with Michelle Nwokedi being named the Ivy League Player of the Year, a unanimous First-Team All-Ivy selection and an All-Big 5 honoree. Sydney Stipanovich (Second Team All-Big 5) and Anna Ross were named Second-Team All-Ivy selections while McLaughlin brought home Ivy League Coach of the Year honors broke multiple records under McLaughlin s tutelage. The Quakers concluded the year with 24 total wins and 11 non-conference victories (both school records) and finished the season with the highest RPI in program history at No. 27 to earn the Ivy League title. The team also posted eight wins over schools ranked in the top-100 of the RPI and finished the year with the highest NCAA tournament seed in school history (No. 10). Additionally, McLaughlin notched his 500th win as a head coach and his 100th as a Quaker during the course of the season. Individuals also thrived under McLaughlin s coaching environment. Sydney Stipanovich was named the Ivy League Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year to become the first player in Ivy history to win both in the same season. Additionally, Stipanovich and Michelle Nwokedi were each named First Team All-Ivy and Big 5 honorees while the former entered the Red and Blue record books as Penn s all-time blocks leader. In , the Quakers tied a school record for wins in a season and earned the outright Ivy championship with the second-best league mark in program history. The Quakers earned their first win over an ACC opponent (at Miami) and earned back-to-back postseason appearances for the first time ever. With that resume, the Red and Blue entered the NCAA Tournament against fifth-seeded Texas and led by as much as 15 and seven at the half before falling Penn boasted the Ivy League Player of the Year, Ivy League Rookie of the Year and Ivy League Defensive Player of the year -- the first school to sweep all three awards. The Quakers also became the first school to sweep Big 5 Player, Coach and Rookie of the Year awards. Five of McLaughlin s recruiting classes have produced the Big 5 or Ivy League Rookie of the Year. Prior to his tenure, only one Penn player had ever earned Big 5 Rookie of the Year accolades, but four have done so under his watch. Penn s win total improved in each of McLaughlin s seven seasons as the Quakers went from two wins to a school-record 25 victories in that span. He entered the season with the highest winning percentage of any head coach in college basketball - man or woman, at any level. However, facing one of the toughest non-conference schedules in decades and inheriting a team that lost 74 percent of its scoring, including the Ivy League s top scorer, Penn finished last in the Ivy League in his first season at the helm. Prior to Penn, McLaughlin had unprecedented success at NCAA Division II member Holy Family University, where in 14 seasons as head coach of the women s basketball team he had a career equal to anyone who has coached the game. McLaughlin racked up an impressive record of 407 wins and 61 losses, a winning percentage of.870 which was the highest at any level of NCAA Basketball (men or women). Out of his 14 seasons as a head coach, McLaughlin was honored as the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Coach of the Year 13 times. In , McLaughlin won his 400th game as a head coach faster than any other women s basketball coach in NCAA history, doing it in 459 games. The Division I record is held by Leon Barmore, who needed 463 games to reach the milestone at Louisiana Tech, while the Division III record is 464 games set by Nancy Fahey at Washington University (Mo.). A graduate of Holy Family, McLaughlin received his bachelor s degree in criminal justice. From his stellar playing career at Holy Family, he remains ninth all-time in scoring with 1,481 points and third with 755 assists. McLaughlin lives with his wife Ginny and three children (Courtney, Michael and Kelsey). GAME NOTES , 2018 Big 5 Champions
