CHIP DIP: The Central Michigan squad comes into Tuesday night s game after notching six wins in its last seven games. A large part of their non-conference success was that of junior guard Marcus Keene. Keene leads the nation in scoring at 30.7 points per game, while his backcourt mate, Braylon Rayson, chips in with 17.5 points per contest. CMU s 91.2 points per game ranks as the sixth-best scoring offense in the country. However, on the flip side, the Chippewas also allow 80.5 points per game which ranks as 317th in the NCAA. Additionally, Central is one of the best in the country when it comes to ball security. The Chippewas only turn the ball over 9.6 times per game, good for third-best in the country. MANGUM FOR THREE: Eastern Michigan senior guard Willie Mangum IV has become well known for his success from the long line. This season, the Richmond, Va. native has connected on at least one three-pointer in each of the Eagles 13 games, while also notching two-or-more in 10. Currently, Mangum leads the Green and White in scoring at 17.2 points per contest and is ranked 10th all-time in three-point field goal percentage, shooting at a 36.7 percent clip from beyond the arc. LEE LIGHTING IT UP: Redshirt senior guard Ray Lee came into his final season donning the Green and White as one of the top scorers all-time in EMU history and the Detroit, Mich. native has continued that trend. Although he is not leading the Eagles in scoring, he is averaging 17 points per game. What is more impressive is that he has notched double-digit scoring marks in 10-of-12 games played and has notched 20-or-more in seven contests this season. THOMPSON TEARS UP CMU: In two games versus the Chippewas a season ago, James Thompson IV was able to get the best of Central in both. Lead the Eagles to wins in each of them. Thompson posted an average of 19 points and 14.5 rebounds in those games versus Central. The Baton Rouge, La. native shot at a 71.4 percent clip while grabbing six offensive boards per contest. NOBLES KNOCKING IT OUT: Redshirt sophomore Jordan Nobles has put together five-straight games with impressive numbers. The Canton, Mich. native has averaged 12 points per game, while grabbing 6.8 rebounds per contest over that span. He has notched double-digit scoring performances in four of those five games, while adding 10-or-mpore rebounds in a pair of contests during that stretch. Against Long Beach State, Nobles scored a career-best 15 points, while dishing out a career-high six assists. Additionally, the 6-foot-9 forward has shot 60.5 percent from the floor and 42.9 percent from beyond the arc in that four-game span. The Eagles stuffed the Mustangs on 13 different occasions, including blocks from eight EMU student-athletes. Those 13 blocks ranked as the most in a single game by a team in Eastern Michigan dating back to the campaign. 4

5 CLEANING UP THE GLASS: The Green and White recorded 60 rebounds in its victory over Marygrove, Dec. 22. That number ranks as the third-most in a single game in Eastern Michigan history. In addition, to make that feat more impressive, the Eagles managed that number with its top rebounder, James Thompson IV, on the bench due to injury. Heading into the game with Marygrove, Thompson was averaging 11.5 rebounds per contest. JONES DOUBLING UP: Senior Quaran Jones was dominant in Eastern s performance over Marygrove, Dec. 22. Not only was he one of five Eagles in double figures for scoring with 13 points, but the Fargo, N.D. native grabbed 13 rebounds to record his first career double-double in Jones first season playing at EMU. THOMPSON TAKES CHARGE ON THE GLASS: EMU sophomore James Thompson IV put together the best rebounding performance by an Eagle since Kareem Carpenter grabbed 27 rebounds versus Western Michigan, Feb. 8, 1995, by grabbing 21 rebounds in Eastern s loss at Vermont, Dec. 17. Of Thompson s 21 rebounds, 11 of them came on the offensive end. HIGHWAY ROBBERY: Eastern Michigan has become known as one of the most active teams defensively and the numbers back up that claim. The Eagles have racked up a total of 150 steals this season, which ranks as the third-most in the NCAA as of Jan. 2. Additionally, their average of 11.5 steals per game are the second-best in the nation. Individually, the Green and White boast four student-athletes who average one-or-more steal per contest, including Tim Bond, Ray Lee, Willie Mangum IV, and Ty Toney. Bond, Lee, Mangum and Toney make up four of the top-six spots in the Mid-American Conference. Bond leads the MAC with 2.23 steals per game while Toney takes second in the league (2.2 spg), Mangum is tied for third (two spg) and Lee is in sixth with 1.8 swipes per contest. WINNING THE TURNOVER BATTLE: This season, Eastern Michigan has won the turnover battle in all but three contests. Additionally, the Green and White have forced more than 15 turnovers in 10 of the Eagles 13 games this season. In total, EMU owns a +6.3 turnover margin, good for the third-best in the NCAA. As a team, Eastern Michigan turns the ball over just 12.7 times per contest, while forcing the opposition into 19 per game. ON THE HORIZON: Following their Tuesday evening contest with Central Michigan, the Eagles remain at home to continue Mid-American Conference action Saturday, Jan. 7. Eastern Michigan is set to host Buffalo at 2:30 p.m. as the second leg of a doubleheader with the women s team at the Convocation Center. STREAKING AT THE CONVO: In the metaphorical sense, the Eagles have been streaking at the Convo, winning its last 13 contests in their home building. Eastern s home win streak dates back to Feb. 2, 2016, when it posted a 25-point, 94-69, win over Miami. Since that win, the Eagles have a perfect record at home. That number is tied as the NCAA s 13th-best winning streak inside a team s home building, while Kansas leads that category with 49-straight victories at Allen Fieldhouse. Akron is the only Mid-American Conference member that has a longer home winning streak with 23 victories in a row at James A. Rhodes Arena, good for third nationally. CHARITY CHAMPIONS: A season ago, EMU converted 72.1 percent of its free throw attempts, marking the third-best free throw percentage as a team in Eastern Michigan history. To this point of the season, the Eagles are hitting their free throws at an 74.6 percent clip, which would tie the EMU all-time record. In addition, EMU s Ray Lee has continued to show his worth at the free throw line in the early goings of this year. The Detroit, Mich. native ranks seventh overall in EMU history for free throws made (403), while also being 10th in career free throw percentage (.784). DOUBLE-DOUBLE MACHINE: EMU sophomore James Thomspon IV has proven to be one of the premier frontcourt players in the Mid-American Conference and country through his short time at Eastern Michigan. The Baton Rouge, La. native has racked up 26 double-doubles in just 45 games donning the Green and White. That number ranks as the seventh-most double-doubles recorded in EMU history. The 6-foot-10 forward needs just one more to jump up to sixth in the all-time rankings. EAGLES OFFENSE SOARING: Despite being known for their defensive activity, the Green and White s offense should not be overlooked. Eastern Michigan ranks 20th in the NCAA and third in the MAC with 84.9 points per game. RECORD BREAKING DAY: In EMU s win over Siena Heights, Dec. 11, the Eagles set a Convocation Center record by scoring 117 points. Now, the Eastern Michigan football team went to its first bowl since the 1987 campaign and coincidentally traveled to Nassau as well. This will be the first time that the EMU Athletics Department will see two of its teams travel to a foreign country in the same year for competition, let alone travel to the same country in one calendar year. The football team played Old Dominion Friday, Dec. 23, in the Popeyes Bahamas Bowl. THE COMEBACK KIDS: Eastern Michigan has trailed at some point in four of its five victories this season. Lee, who led the Eagles in scoring last year (15.1 ppg), has scored 1,622 points in his career. That number ranks him as the seventhmost prolific scorer in Eastern Michigan history. Currently, Kennedy McIntosh is the all-time scoring leader with 2,219 and Earl Boykins is second with 2,211. Lee needs to score 598 more points this year to become EMU s all-time leading scorer. CHASING 100: EMU Head Men s Basketball Coach Rob Murphy is in his sixth season at the helm of the Eagles men s basketball program. After five seasons and into this year, he has amassed a record of for Eastern Michigan. Thompson posted his fourth and fifth double-doubles of the year to lead the Eagles to a perfect 2-0 week, on their way to earning their first winning record of the campaign. In the Eagles victory over Madonna, Nov. 23, the 6-foot-10 forward went for 24 points and 10 rebounds, while posting 21 points and 11 rebounds in the Green and White s win versus Omaha, Nov. 26. Additionally, he shot 70.8 percent (17-of-24) from the floor, while connecting on 91.7 percent (11-of-12) of his free throw attempts. LASER FROM LONG RANGE: EMU s Willie Mangum IV has been known to spark the Eastern Michigan offense from time to time. He did just that in the Eagles victory over Gardner-Webb, Nov. 18. With EMU looking at a 14-0 deficit, the senior guard began his offensive onslaught throughout the game. Mangum connected on 8-of-10 shooting overall, while knocking down 6-of-7 three-point field goal attempts. The three-point shooting ranks as the best percentage in a single game with at least seven attempts in EMU history. In total, Mangum racked up 28 points in the victory. OT IN MURPHY ERA: Eastern Michigan has gone to nine overtime games since Rob Murphy took over as head coach of the Eagles prior to the campaign. NOT A NORMAL SCENARIO: The Eagles went to double overtime for the second consecutive season in their matchup with Pittsburgh, Nov. 11. In fact, that is the first time the Green and White had posted two seasons in a row with double overtime contests since the and seasons. The Green and White went to two overtimes with Central Michigan, Jan. 13, 2008, and won, 84-77, before falling, 97-89, in the MAC Tournament to Akron the following season, March 11, EMU PICKED TO WIN THE MAC WEST: After receiving votes from the conference s 12 head coaches and a 24-member media panel, the Mid-American Conference announced Friday, Oct. 28, that the Eastern Michigan men s basketball team was selected as the preseason favorite to win the MAC West Division for the campaign. The Eagles received 178 total points, which was 20 points more than the next closest in the West. Additionally, the Green and White took home 16 first places votes, while also nabbing three votes to win the 2017 MAC Tournament. In addition, EMU sophomore James Thompson IV was named to the preseason All-MAC West Division Team. OFFENSIVE FIREPOWER: Eastern Michigan returns quite the offensive arsenal for the campaign. The Green and White bring back its top-four scorers from a year ago and lose just one of its top-six point getters. Ray Lee (15.1 ppg) leads the way, while James Thompson IV (14.8 ppg), Willie Mangum IV (12 ppg) and Ty Toney (11 ppg) each make their return to the squad. Additionally, Tim Bond returns to the lineup after posting 8.8 points per contest. In total, the Eagles bring back 60.7 points per game from a year ago which is good for 78.4 percent of last season s offensive output. Of those 60.7 points per contest, 46 points came from returners in the starting lineup. THE FIRST TIME IN A LONG TIME: The season opener at Pittsburgh marked a first in the Rob Murphy era. It will be the first time since the Detroit, Mich. native took over that the Eagles will begin the season on the road. In each of his first five seasons, the Green and White has began the season within the friendly confines of the Convocation Center. The last time Eastern began the year on the road was during the campaign when Eagles traveled to East Lansing, Mich. to take on the No. 2-ranked Michigan State Spartans. A RECORD YEAR: Eastern Michigan saw a lot of lines filled in the record book by the sqaud. As a team, the Green and White set records for the most free throws made in a season (616), the most steals in a season (312) and the highest steals per game (9.5) average in EMU history. In addition, the squad posted the third-best free throw percentage (72.1 percent), while blocking the sixth-most shots (123), knocking down the seventh-most three pointers (187) and scoring the seventh-most points (2,533) in the history of the Eastern Michigan program. THOMPSON NAMED MAC FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR: The Mid-American Conference announced, March 8, that freshman James Thompson IV was named the MAC s Freshman of the Year in a landslide. Thompson earned 33 of a possible 38 first place votes on his way to becoming the first member of the EMU basketball program to earn the award since Lorenzo Neely was named the conference s best freshman back in In addition, the Baton Rouge, La. native became just the second Eastern Michigan student-athlete to earn the award. Thompson averaged 14.7 points per game, good for 11th in the league, while leading the conference in rebounds at 10.7 per contest. Thompson connected on 64.5 percent of his field goal opportunities which was the highest mark in the conference, while his 47 blocks was the thirdhighest total in the MAC. The 6-foot-10 center corralled 352 total rebounds last year which was the third-most in a single season in EMU history, while his field goal percentage ranked second-best in a single campaign. THREE EAGLES EARN CONFERENCE HONORS: Along with being named the MAC Freshman of the Year, Eastern center James Thompson IV earned Second Team All-MAC honors, while Ray Lee garnered honorable mention accolades. Additionally, Tim Bond was named to the MAC s inaugural All-Defensive team following the regular season. It was the second consecutive season that Lee earned postseason accolades from the MAC. The Detroit, Mich. native averaged 15.1 points per game, good for 10th in the conference, while connecting on 82.1 percent of his free throw attempts, which was the fourth-best mark in the MAC. Additionally, Lee was strong on the defensive end for EMU, posting 1.3 steals per contest, marking the 8th most in the MAC. Bond earned all-defensive team accolades following an exceptional season for the Green and White. The sophomore led the Mid-American Conference in steals at 2.0 per game and 67 in total. The 67 steals cemented Bond s spot in the EMU record book with the third-most in a single season. On the year, the sophomore recorded a steal in all but two games, and versus Toledo, March 4, Bond 7 Career Double-Double Leaders 1. FRESHMAN PHENOM: A year ago we saw then-freshman James Thompson IV lead the Eagles in points scored, rebounding and field goal percentage. Thompson s 490 points scored surpassed Ray Lee s 380 for the most points scored by a freshman in Eastern Michigan history. In addition, Thompson pulled down 352 rebounds, good for the third-best total in a single season at EMU. Finally, his 64.5 field goal percentage ranks second all-time in single season history for Eastern and if the Baton Rouge, La. native can keep that pace through his career, he will hold the all-time career record at EMU. After one season donning the Green and White, Thompson has already placed himself inside the top-100 in EMU history for both rebounding and scoring. The 6-foot-10 front-court player begins the season 98th on the all-time scoring list and 51st on the rebounding list. FOR THE 119th TIME: The EMU men s basketball team kicked off its 119th season of competition, Friday, Nov. 11, when the Eagles travel to Pittsburgh. Eastern played its first season in and split games with Detroit. MAC AND BIG TEN TO TEST REPLAY: The NCAA approved an experimental rule allowing Big Ten and MAC officials to use instant replay within the restricted arc for the season. This is the first-ever NCAA rule that will allow coaches to initiate replay in college basketball. The rule can be used when an official thinks an incorrect call was made on the block/charge or if a coach appeals for a review on the call. Should the coach s appeal be incorrect, the team will be charged a timeout. The rule is only used in the final two minutes of regulation or overtime. Additionally, it can only be applied to determine whether a defensive player was inside or outside of the restricted arc on a block/charge call. NEW FACES ON THE FLOOR: Despite losing just two seniors from a season ago, the Eagles have seven new additions to this season s squad, three of which are coming off of redshirts from a season ago. Quaran Jones, Nick Madray and Lamar Wofford-Humphrey sat out a season ago, but will see their first action donning the Green and White this year. In addition, freshman Jalen Brown will join the Eagles, while sophomore Baylee Steele has transferred from Des Moines Area Community College to compete for Eastern Michigan. Additionally, Terry Harris, Paul Jackson and Elijah Minnie will sit out the season after transferring from NCAA Division I schools. 43rd MAC SEASON: The season will be the 43rd for the Eagles in the Mid-American Conference. The first year of MAC play for EMU was when the then-hurons went and 4-9 in league play. Eastern has won three Mid-American Conference championships: , and The Green and White captured MAC Tournament crowns in all three of those seasons, in addition to winning the tournament title in EMU S CAREER DIVISIONAL RECORD: The Mid-American Conference has had West-East Divisional competition since A complete list of divisional play is listed below. 8 EMU IN MAC PLAY Year MAC Record Overall Record Divisonal Place rd-West th-West rd-West th-West th-West t-4th-west th-West th-West th-West th-West t-2nd-west th-West t-2nd-west t-4th-west st-West th-West rd-West t-3rd-west t-3rd-west OVERALL
