2 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE COACHES CORNER Howdy folks, I trust and hope everyone is thoroughly enjoying, and our athletes are embracing, the challenges that have presented themselves so far this season. As we continue to develop our athlete s across the entire club and as we continually invest our resources into player development it is also important to look back and reflect at the results we are having. State Champ results The state championships were again another successful weekend for the club with 11 teams making the top 4 out of a possible 16 grades. With 3 teams ending up taking out the state champion title. Our winning teams included the U16 girls & U18 Boys state teams and our U12 girls reserve side. We came 2nd overall in state champion points and 2nd overall reserve points. Elite Eagles Over the past month we have seen a number of news articles featuring current and former eagle s juniors, highlights for me included: - Adam Doyle signing with the Adelaide 36ers - Majok Deng signing with the Adelaide 36ers - Sam Simons making the Australian U17 team - Multiple eagles representing the state at the U16 National Championships I hope everyone can maintain a positive attitude towards there basketball experience remembering our coaches, board and team managers are volunteer s and as an organisation we are always seeking assistance (both financially from businesses and personally from our members volunteering their time in a variety of ways) and looking for ways to improve. Regards, Brad Haydon on behalf of Milan Djurasevich Forestville Eagles Club President Common traits of great rebounders In my opinion, the most important factor in determining basketball games is rebounding. The team that controls the glass is usually the team that wins. We have some exceptions like the Phoenix Suns, who get out-rebounded all the time. Especially in youth games, the team that wins the rebounding totals will more than likely come out on top. The unique thing about rebounding is that it s never really a talent players are born with. It s a skill that is learned and developed. This article discusses specific things all great rebounders have in common. 1. Desire This is something that is difficult to teach. Every good rebounder has a strong desire to get to the ball. Every good rebounder understands the importance of possessing the ball and makes it an absolute priority. I have the benefit of watching Paul Milsap, a power forward/small forward that presently plays for the Atlanta Hawks. This man is incredible to watch. When the shot goes up, the opposing team had better know where he is on the court because he s going to be near the ball. He s always near the ball because he wants it more than most players. This man led the nation in rebounding for 3 straight years in college and is only 6 foot 8 inches tall. Dennis Rodman led the NBA in rebounding for years and was very undersized also. The point is that every team needs someone who is willing to get the ball. Every team needs a player to rebound and accept that as their role. Players that rebound will always find their way into the rotation. I have spent time watching several interviews with Ben Wallace and Dennis Rodman over the years. I was very interested to see how they became good at rebounding. What I was most amazed at is the amount of study and understanding they had for where the ball was going to be. I compare it to Michael Jordan or Kobe Bryant who watch game film to see how the defense will play them. Dennis Rodman would watch game film to see where shooters missed shots and where the rebounds fell to. He spent time in shoot around watching angles and understanding shooters arch. It was amazing to listen to them discuss rebounding the way Michael or Kobe would discuss scoring the ball. The greatest rebounder of all time was a man named Bill Russell and he has constantly said that the key to being the best rebounder is wanting that ball more than anyone else. Bill Russell won a lot of rings with the Celtics so I d say he s someone worth listening to. 2. Hand Position When I work with young players I teach them to always have their hands up. Too many times players will have their hands at their sides and aren t in position to get the ball when it presents itself. I m not suggesting that your hands are held up in the air like someone is about to shoot you. I m suggesting that you keep them in an athletic position where the elbows are out with your hands at least shoulder height. How many times have you been watching a game where the ball falls off the rim and clocks someone in the face who isn t ready to rebound? Or the player is too worried about the man behind him so he has his hands down and back instead of in a ready, athletic position? 3. Preparation and Study I touched on this a little bit before but it deserves stronger mention. Spend time during warm-ups watching the opposing team shoot the ball. Players with low trajectory or flat shots tend to create hard rebounds that are either long or short, either way, the ball with come off the rim hard. Watch angles where players like to shoot from and where they typically miss if they do. Develop a strong sense of anticipation but a stronger sense of desire and you ll be on the road to being a solid rebounder. Credit: hoopsskills.com coach Brian Schofield PAGE 2 PAGE 3

5 STATE CHAMPS/CLASSICS INFORMATION STATE CHAMPS Whilst the club didn t win any state wide awards, we had an incredible 11 teams make final four. 5 teams made the GF, 2 teams missed out on the grand final with last second shots (U16B Res and U18 G State). 3 teams won the GF (U12 GR, U16 G S & U18 B S), U18 Boys state with a massive 3 on the buzzer to win it. A huge well done also to our U14 G Reserve who lost in double overtime. Also to the U18 Boys, who started the weekend totally overlooked. Rated to finish fourth in their group, they started with wins over Woodville and Norwood before losing to Centrals and then winning narrowly over Southern. In the Semi, they survived a tough encounter to win by 6 against the highly fancied Mavericks. The GF was a thriller as the Eagles led by 6 late in the game, only to have Centrals fight back to level, and then take a one point lead with 2.7 sec to play. A well constructed and executed out of bounds play saw Michael Harris launch a three pointer which was all net, as Forestville reversed their round result to win on the bell. The points system for club wide trophies as normal was 5 for winning, 3 for second, 2 for third and 1 for fourth. As such we were 2nd in both State and Reserve Girls, and 2nd overall in both state and reserve overall points. CLASSICS Four teams competed in the Classics over the June long weekend. Adam, a long time guard with our premier league (ABA) team, has in past years had several stints as a development player with the 36ers. He played with Knox in the SEABL in 2014 before blowing his knee out in an exhibition game with Knox against a US College team. Adam joined Forestville in 2008 at U18 level from Sturt where he was playing Div 2. He has been a regular in the senior team since 2009 winning titles in 2011, 2012 and MORGAN S FAREWELL The Premier League Women s team farewelled Morgan Yaeger with a team bonding outing at the Arial Adventure Park at West Beach on Sunday June 5th. Morgan commenced Senior basketball in 2014, continuing her junior career, right till current time, playing through the age groups, and also at state level. This year, playing all 12 games as a starter, she has averaged 5 rebounds, 3 assists and points at 44% per game.
