PRINCETON THE MATCHUP Wake Forest will travel to Fairfax, Virginia to face George Mason Sept. 1. The game will be broadcast on the A10 Network. The Demon Deacons will then return home to face Princeton on Sept. 3 at 1 p.m. That contest will be on ACC Network Extra. LAST TIME OUT The Demon Deacons secured their first victory over a top-five opponent since the 2012 season with a 3-2 victory over No. 3 South Carolina Aug. 24. Specifically, it was the first victory over a No. 3 ranked opponent since defeating Duke on Nov. 4, The Deacs then recorded their third shutout of the season with a 3-0 victory over Charlotte on Aug. 27. Sofia Rossi recorded two goals while Abby McNamara tallied the third. WAKE FOREST STORYLINES Wake Forest women s soccer is nationally ranked for the first time since 2014 when the team began the season ranked No. 14 by Soccer America and No. 21 by the NSCAA. Currently, the Demon Deacons are ranked No. 8 by Soccer America, No. 18 in the United Soccer Coaches Poll and No. 23 by TopDrawerSoccer. Wake Forest finished the 2016 slate with seven shutouts, just one shy of the program record of eight set in The Deacs are returning their top three scorers from last season in Peyton Perea, Maddie Huster and Bayley Feist. The trio also finished the 2016 campaign with double-digit point totals as Huster recorded five goals and four assists for 14 points, Perea finished with six goals for 12 points and Feist had five goals and two assists for 12 points. Wake Forest is returning 19 members from the 2016 roster while welcoming seven freshmen. SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS The Demon Deacons and Patriots have met just once in program history, a 1-0 Wake Forest victory in Spry Stadium on Sept. 13, This season, George Mason is off to a start. The Patriots are returning 17 letterwinners and seven starters from the 2016 season, including senior Erin Mitchell who led the team with 19 points and eight goals last season. SENIOR SPOTLIGHT Instead of one big senior day this season, Wake Forest will honor a senior at each of the final six home games. Wake Forest will be graduating Kahla Seymour, Monreau DeVos, Maddie Huster, Lindsay Preston, Ally Haran and Sarah Medina. (INTER)NATIONAL TALENT An impressive six Deacons have some form of National Team experience in Ryanne Brown, Ally Haran, Maddie Huster, Hulda Arnarsdottir, Vicky Krug and Estelle Laurier. Brown was a member of the U.S. U-17 National Team where she attended four camps and earned two caps. Haran participated twice at the United States U-20 National Team camps, once at a U.S. U-19 camp and also at a Canada U-20 training camp before receiving an invite from the U.S. Huster also spent time competing at a U.S. U-20 National Team training camp. Arnarsdottir has earned 20 National Team caps for Iceland including nine with the U-17 team and 11 with the U-19 team. Krug was a member of the German U-19 National team as well as on the U-17 German Championship team in She played for the U-15 National Team for three seasons and U-17 for one. Laurier has been a member of the France U-16, U-17 and U-19 National Teams and earned 14 caps en route to a semifinal finish at the 2015 UEFA Under-17 Championships in Iceland. HUSTER HONORED Senior captain Maddie Huster was honored as ACC Co- Offensive Player of the Week Aug. 29 for her three-point effort in the upset victory over No. 3 South Carolina. Huster also earned honorable mention in TopDrawerSoccer s August 29th Team of the Week. PRESEASON POLL Wake Forest was picked to finish ninth in the ACC in voting conducted among league head coaches. 3 SPRY STADIUM UPGRADES Prior to the season, a state-of-the-art video board was installed at Spry Stadium that will feature stats, instant replay and more. With the addition of the board, Wake Forest becomes the only school in the NCAA to have a 10-millimeter display at a soccer venue. Spry Stadium is the first soccer-specific venue in the United States, and fifth soccer-specific venue in the world, to feature 10-millimeter line spacing on a main video display. The board ranks in the Top-10 in square footage for a soccer display in college installed by Daktronics. The square foot board clocks in at sixth. The board features nearly 420,000 LEDs. Funds for the board were raised by the Owen family and will be named for the late Jack W. Owen II (Wake Forest, 85). An anonymous donor initiated a donation match to assist in the effort. SPREADING THE WEALTH Wake Forest has had a balanced attack early in the season with multiple athletes recording points. Twelve Deacs have recorded one or more points this season while seven have threeplus points. Six Demon Deacons have scored goals while nine have recorded assists. The Deacs 43 shots have been taken by 13 players while the 24 shots on goal have been by 11 players. STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE This season, the Demon Deacons will face seven 2016 NCAA Tournament qualifying teams throughout the regular season, as well as four Power 5 competitors in the nonconference schedule. The Deacs will also face five teams included in the United Soccer Coaches preseason rankings, including No. 4 South Carolina, No. 6 North Carolina, No. 13 Clemson, No. 15 Florida State and No. 18 Notre Dame. TEAM LEADERS Wake Forest has three senior captains serving as team leaders this season: seniors Ally Haran, Maddie Huster and Lindsay Preston. Haran and Huster receive the honor for the second season, while Preston is a first-year captain. BETFORT LEADS THE PACK Freshman Hannah Betfort has made an immediate impact for the Demon Deacons so far this season as she leads the team in goals (3) and points (6), and is second in shots (5) and shots on goal (4). The Charleston, South Carolina native scored the game-winning goal in the 3-2 upset victory over No. 3 South Carolina. NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK The women s soccer program welcomed seven freshman to the team this season. The recruiting class was ranked No. 14 in the country, according to TopDrawerSoccer. The class includes three All-Americans in Ryanne Brown, Abby McNamara and Sofia Rossi and three new Deacs also have some form of national team experience in Brown, Vicky Krug and Hulda Arnarsdottir. Sofia Rossi and Abby McNamara combined to score the three goals in the shutout victory over Charlotte on Aug. 27. HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE Since its opening in 1996, the Wake Forest women s soccer program has held a (.697) advantage over opponents in W. Dennie Spry Stadium. Under da Luz, the program has a (.704) tilt at home, including an record last season SEASON REVIEW The Demon Deacons finished the non-conference regular season schedule unbeaten with an record. It was the second time in program history the Deacs finished the non-conference slate undefeated, also in The Deacs recorded seven shutouts, the most since they had since eight in Their five-straight shutouts matched the program record (also 2009 and 2006), while it was the second time in program history they earned five consecutive shutout victories (also 2006). Maddie Huster recorded the program s ninth all-time, and first since 2011, hat trick against FIU on Aug. 25. The squad finished with a record. DEACONS IN THE PROS Three former Demon Deacons are currently in action for professional teams. Aubrey Bledsoe and Katie Stengel are playing in the NWSL while Sarah Teegarden is playing abroad in Sweden. Aubrey Bledsoe is playing for the Orlando Pride. So far this season, she boasts a record with 11 starts and 990 minutes in goal. Bledsoe has recorded 36 saves and has a 1.44 goals-against average. Katie Stengel started the 2017 season with the Washington Spirit but was waived on June 28. The Boston Breakers picked her up on June 30 and she made her first appearance as a Breaker on July 7. Since then, she has seen action 12 times, with seven starts and 550 minutes played. She has recorded one assist and five shots, two of which were on target. Sarah Teegarden began her professional career in the Damallsvenskan (Women s Premier Division), the top pro league in Sweden, with Kopparbergs Goteborg FC. Teegarden has made 13 starts and has played 90 minutes in 12 of her 13 appearances. She has one goal against Pitea. WAKE FOREST VS. Through 2016, he holds a record at Wake Forest, with his 237 wins ranking third among coaches of ACC programs since the conference first recognized women s soccer in Da Luz is one of only 10 coaches in Wake Forest history across all sports to win 200 games at the helm of the Demon Deacons. Under da Luz s guidance, Wake Forest has earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament in 17 out of 19 seasons. In 2011 he achieved his greatest success to date, leading the Demon Deacons to their first-ever College Cup appearance. Recent years have seen Wake Forest reach a new level of women s soccer prominence. The Deacons captured the 2010 ACC Championship, the first in the history of the program, and made a return trip to the ACC Tournament final in The 2012 Wake Forest squad finished in a tie for second place in the ACC standings, equaling the program s best-ever finish. Wake Forest s success under da Luz has not only been limited to the conference level.
