The last four weeks featured three home games and a road contest at Gannon. The stretch was capped by a upset of 17th ranked Slippery Rock last Saturday. That boosted the Fighting Scots to 5 3 overall and 3 2 in the PSAC West and gave them a two game winning streak. } The win over Slippery Rock kept Edinboro undefeated at home at 5 0 with one game remaining against California(Pa.) on November 4. However, the Fighting Scots have yet to pick up a road win, losing at West Chester, Indiana(Pa.), and Gannon. The Fighting Scots have outscored their opponents at home The story has been a bit different on the road, with Edinboro being outscored } The Fighting Scots were picked to finish fourth in the PSAC West. Edinboro opened the season with back to back wins at Sox Harrison Stadium, defeating Lake Erie (30 3) and Lock Haven (20 3). Edinboro suffered a loss at West Chester, the Eastern Division favorite, followed by a 38 7 setback at then sixth ranked and PSAC West preseason favorite Indiana(Pa.) in the PSAC West opener. They snapped their two game losing skid with a win over Clarion to end September, but began October with a loss at Gannon. Against Mercyhurst, it was turnovers that paved the way for a victory. Edinboro won the turnover battle for the first time since the opening game, with three Mercyhurst fumbles leading to three short drives for touchdowns. Offensive Tackle Also on Hands Team When Mercyhurst scored with just under three minutes to play to pull to within 28 25, and with the Lakers owning just one timeout, an onside kick was in order. Along the front line for Edinboro, running backs, wide receivers, and defensive backs. And an offensive tackle! Trey Staunch was part of the hands unit, and of course the ball went straight to him. The former standout high school quarterback calmly fielded the ball and Edinboro went on to run out the clock. Clark Posts Big Effort in Return Home James Clark hauled in a career best 12 passes for 104 yards and 3 TDs at West Chester. The game marked a homecoming for the junior wide receiver, who played at nearby Coatesville High School. He enjoyed his seventh career 100 yard receiving game. He would complete 9 of 19 passes for 90 yards with an interception. Tomko was a record setting quarterback at Sharon High School. He made his first career appearance at quarterback at IUP. Fighting Scots Block Pair of Kicks at Gannon One of the bright spots of the loss at Gannon was a pair of blocked kicks. Zuril Hendrick blocked a 37 yard field goal in the fourth quarter, and Nick Pettigrew added a blocked extra point later in the quarter. Sisson Makes it Two Years in a Row with TD Grab vs. Clarion Quarterback Jake Sisson has now caught a touchdown pass two years in a row against Clarion. The Fighting Scots have dropped back to sixth in the PSAC in scoring defense after West Chester scored 62 points, although two of the scores came on an interception return and a blocked punt return. West Chester s 62 points were the most since the loss at West Liberty in 2009 in the NCAA playoffs. It is the fifth highest total ever against Edinboro. WCU s 27 points in the first quarter tied the school record by an opponent previously set by Baldwin Wallace in 1966, and the 48 points at halftime is a new record by an opponent. Long Plays Contribute to Long Day at West Chester Edinboro had allowed just four plays of 25 or more yards from scrimmage in their first two games, but West Chester had five plays of 25 yards or more. All resulted in touchdowns. Defense Holds Back-to-Back Opponents Without Touchdown for First Time Since 2008 The Edinboro defense has yet to give up a touchdown in 2016, allowing just a field goal to Lake Erie and Lock Haven. This marks the first time Edinboro has held back to back opponents without a touchdown since the 2008 season. Bischof Enjoys Memorable Day in First Start Freshman linebacker Ryan Bischof enjoyed an impressive game against Lock Haven in his first career start. Filling in for injured Trey Hall at mike linebacker, Bischof recorded eight tackles, including a tackle for a loss. he made one of the most important plays of the game on defense when he made a diving interception of a pass at the Edinboro 4 yard line to stop a Lock Haven drive. It was his first career interception. Gregory Picks Up Where He Left Off in 2017 Following an outstanding freshman season with numerous honors, Ta'Nauz Gregory was named to the Lindy s Sports 2017 Preseason All Division II Starting Lineup. He was named the 2016 Don Hansen NCAA Division II Freshman of the Year and was also named the PSAC West Freshman of the Year. Gregory got off to a great start against Lake Erie, finishing with 7 receptions for 123 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He joins 2016 PSAC West Freshman of the Year Ta Nauz Gregory, a former teammate with the Ramblers, as part of the starting wideouts. Cushma Kicks First Career Field Goal One of the biggest roles to fill coming into the 2017 season was the placekicking chores handled by Austin Reese the previous two seasons. Redshirt sophomore Mike Cushma won the competition in the preseason, and last Saturday he stepped in and made his first career field goal attempt. The 26 yarder gave Edinboro a 3 0 lead. Cushma made 3 of 4 extra points, with the fourth disrupted by a bad snap. In addition, three of his six kickoffs were touchbacks. The Fighting Scots received 57 votes after ending the 2016 season among "others receiving votes", as well. Edinboro vs. the GMAC Officially, Edinboro had never played a game against a team from one of the newest Division II conferences, the Great Midwest Athletic Conference. That isn t necessarily true, however, since Edinboro did face Walsh when the Cavaliers were members of the GLIAC. That meeting came in 2013, and is the last time an Edinboro edition faced a current member of the GMAC. Lake Erie is in its first year in the conference after also previously playing in the GLIAC. Edinboro claimed a 30 3 win in the first meeting between the two teams.
