Justin Lustig was named Edinboro s 14th head coach in January, and will officially make his debut against the Pumas. Edinboro comes off its first winless season since 1951 and the seventh in school history. The Fighting Scots finished 0 11 a year ago, the most losses in school history at Edinboro. } The Fighting Scots face a Saint Joseph s team that was 5 6 a year ago, including a win over Edinboro in the season opener for both teams. That marked the first meeting between the two teams. Saturday s game in Rensselaer, indiana will be the first time an Edinboro team has played in the Hoosier state. } Saturday s game at Saint Joseph s is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start, but note that is CDT, so in actuality it is a 1 p.m. kickoff for the fans back in the East. } Road wins have been at a premium for Edinboro lately. The Fighting Scots enter the 2016 campaign with losses in 12 of their last 13 road games and 14 in the last 16. The lone road win in the last 13 games came in 2014 at Clarion. } Edinboro owns a all time record in season openers. The Fighting Scots have lost their last two season openers a loss at Carson Newman in 2014 and a loss to Saint Joseph s in Edinboro last opened the season with a win in 2013, a win at Walsh. } Edinboro was picked to finish eighth in the PSAC West in the coaches' preseason poll after being picked to finish seventh a year ago. Saint Joseph's was picked to finish seventh in the Great Lakes Valley Conference preseason poll. } The Fighting Scots return a total of 15 starters from 2015 seven on offense, six on defense, and two specialists. However, the offense will be without two starters in the opener, including leading rusher Cory Bell, who is out indefinitely with injuries. } Youth is featured on the 2016 roster, along with a touch of seniority. After having just five seniors in 2015, this year s roster has six redshirt seniors and nine seniors. However, 50 of the 83 players on the opening day roster have a year experience or less. That breaks down to 24 freshman, nine redshirt freshmen, and 17 sophomores. } Both Edinboro and Saint Joseph will have new looks on the ground. With last year s leading rusher, Cory Bell, out with an injury after gaining 522 yards on the ground a year ago, first year head coach Justin Lustig will turn to redshirt freshman Walter Fletcher and freshman Brandon Rios, along with redshirt junior Rob Bell, a redshirt junior who transferred from California(Pa.) a year ago but did not see any action. In fact, not one running back on the roster enters the season with a carry as a Fighting Scot. Saint Joseph's featured one of the top ground games in the country in 2013 and 14. The Pumas ranked 13th in Division II in rushing in 2014 with ypg. A year ago, they dropped down to ypg. Saint Joseph s enters 2016 without the top three rushers from a year ago, but Mike Anderson returns after rushing for 474 yards in He was a medical redshirt last year. In addition, head coach Daniel Day has brought in Martez Walker, a transfer from Central Michigan. The senior was the Chippewas leading rusher in 2015 with 373 yards on 106 carries, along with 19 receptions. The Keystone Sports Network streams live at The All-Time Series } Saint Joseph s leads 1-0 Edinboro and Saint Joseph s met for the first time last year. The Pumas came away with a win at Sox Harrison Stadium in the season opener for both teams. Last Year s Game } Saint Joseph s 30, Edinboro 10 Edinboro opened the 2015 season with a loss to Saint Joseph's(Ind.) on a Thursday night in front of a crowd of 4,172 at Sox Harrison Stadium. On a hot and humid night a veteran Saint Joseph's squad wore down a young Edinboro squad which played a number of true freshmen. The Pumas scored the last 20 points of the game after Edinboro tied the score at early in the third quarter on a 32 yard field goal by Austin Reese. Justin Kempka accounted for Edinboro s touchdown, catching a two yard pass from Jake Sisson. Saint Joseph s, one of the top rushing teams in Division II in 2014, would end the night with 235 yards on the ground, while Edinboro managed 100 yards, most of that on the final series. Saint Joseph's finished with 430 total yards, while Edinboro had 315 yards. Most of that came through the air behind sophomore Sisson, who was making his second career start. Sisson completed 26 of 42 passes for 215 yards, but threw four interceptions. Darren Massey tied David Bostic's school record for receptions in a game with 13, good for 100 yards. Alex Caratelli, a former transfer from Robert Morris playing in his first game at Edinboro, added 5 receptions for 56 yards, and Connor Hollenbeck caught 5 balls for 49 yards. Ja'maal Eveillard led Edinboro in rushing with 66 yards on six carries, all in the final series of the game. Cory Bell got the start at tailback and gained 42 yards on 13 rushes. The Coaches } Justin Lustig (Bucknell 00) took over as Edinboro s 14th head coach on January 11, This marks Lustig s first head coaching position after serving as an assistant coach at Ball State since A native of western Pennsylvania who played his high school football at nearby Cathedral prep, Lustig also has served as an assistant coach at Louisiana Lafayette, Eastern Illinois,

Lustig has been a part of four teams that earned bowl eligibility in eight years at the FBS level. He was an assistant on five teams that won conference championships in 14 years in the profession, including six NCAA playoff appearances and two bowl games. Five of the teams he has been associated with have been ranked in the top 25. Finally, he has helped develop 37 all conference performers, including 12 at Ball State. Most recently, Lustig was the sepcial teams coordinator/ running backs coach at Ball State since 2011, along with earning the title of assistant head coach prior to the 2015 season. The Cardinals played in two bowl games during Lustig s tenure. They faced UCF in the Beef O Brady s Bowl in 2012, then earned a spot in the 2013 GoDaddy Bowl against Arkansas State. Ball State finished with a 10 3 record in 2013 and 9 4 in In addition, Ball State posted wins over four BCS conference teams Indiana twice, South Florida, and Virginia. } Daniel Day (Montana-Western 94) joined the Saint Joseph s coaching staff in July of 2011 as the offensive line coach. On December 5th, 2014 Day was promoted to serve as the 19th head football coach in school history. The Pumas finished 2015 with a 5 6 mark on the season. SJC was known in 2015 for taking care of the ball, finishing 19th in the nation in turnover margin. The Pumas forced 20 fumbles, while recovering 14. The defense also intercepted an impressive 13 passes. Day's roots are in eastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania. A native of Youngstown, Ohio, he enjoyed a successful playing career at Seton Hill. As the Pumas' offensive line coach, he helped SJC rank 28th in Division II in 2013 with 224 rushing yards per game. In 2014 the Pumas ranked 13th nationally with yards per game while standing 16th in Division II against the run. The offensive line allowed just 15 sacks Lustig Comments... on the Fighting Scots We have come a long way since our arrival in January, I am pleased with the personality this team has developed. They understand that hard work and attention to detail is the way we will progress. I am excited to see our team compete against a very good St. Joe s team. Lustig Comments... on the Pumas St. Joes is a well coached team with talented players at multiple positions. Coach Day has done a great job with this team in only his second year. They are fundamentally very sound, and they give great effort play in and play out. BORO BITS Lustig to Debut as 14th Edinboro Coach When Justin Lustig leads the Fighting Scots into action on Saturday at Saint Joseph s, he will become Edinboro s 14th head coach. He replaces Scott Browning, who served the last ten years as Edinboro s head coach. Tom Hollman holds the record for career victories with 78, while Sox Harrison holds the standard for years as head coach at 15 years. That should be clarified, since the GLVC did not sponsor football until Edinboro has played former GLVC member Ashland, although the Eagles were members of the Heartland Collegiate Conference and Midwest Intercollegiate Football Conference in football at that time. In addition, Edinboro has never played a team from the state of Indiana. The Scots do play Indiana(Pa.) on a yearly basis. Fighting Scots Venture to Hoosier State for First Time... plus Lustig from Ball State Edinboro will play its first ever game in the state of Indiana when the Fighting Scots begin the 2016 season at Saint Joseph s(ind.). It will also mark the furthest game to the west since the 1995 team played its third regular season game at Portland State. Edinboro in Season Openers The Fighting Scots own a all time record in season openers. Edinboro saw its four game winning streak in season openers snapped in 2012 with a loss at Bloomsburg, but the Scots came back with a win at Walsh in 2013.

They fell at Carson Newman, 38 24, in 2014, and opened 2015 with a loss to Saint Joseph s Schedule Features Three Nationally- Ranked Teams, Both PSAC Favorites Edinboro s 2016 schedule features three teams that were ranked in the Sporting News' Division II Preseason Top 25. Indiana(Pa.) is fourth, Slippery Rock ninth, and California(Pa.) is 18th. IUP is ranked eighth in the NFCA preseason poll and 15th according to D2Football.com, while Slippery Rock is 11th and 17th, respectively. In addition, Edinboro faces both preseason favorites in the PSAC. IUP is the preseason favorite in the Western Division, while West Chester was picked number one in the PSAC East. The Fighting Scots will host both of those teams in back to back weeks, with West Chester visiting Sox Harrison Stadium on September 17 for the first home game under first year head coach Justin Lustig, and IUP coming in on September 24 for the PSAC West opener. Four of Five 2015 Award Winners Return Four of the five players who were recognized as major award winners at the conclusion of the 2015 campaign return in Alex Caratelli was voted the Offensive Player of the Year, with Josh Kibbie named the Defensive Player of the Year. The junior noseguard was also voted the Defensive Lineman of the Year. Freshman Mitch Thomas was named the Special Teams Player of the Year, along with receiving the Ironman Award and the Defensive Rookie of the Year. Finally, James Clark was voted the Offensive Rookie of the Year. Caratelli, a sophomore wide receiver, finished with 52 receptions for 837 yards, a 16.1 yard average, with 8 TDs. Kibbie led the Fighting Scots with 73 tackles, and also paced the team in tackles for losses (9) and sacks (5.5). Thomas, a freshman cornerback, enjoyed a highly productive first year. He ranked fourth on the team in tackles with 60. As a return man, he broke school records for kickoff returns (36) and kickoff return yards (871), averaging 24.2 yards per return. He averaged 4.6 yards on 14 punt returns. Clark caught 7 passes for 109 yards and a touchdown. The lone non returner is Joe Sullivan, who was named the Offensive Lineman of the Year after starting all 11 games at center. Caratelli Catches On Alex Caratelli was forced to sit out the 2014 season after transferring from Robert Morris. He proved to be well worth the wait in his first season, forming a potent one two combination at wide receiver. The redshirt junior ended the year with 52 receptions for 837 yards, a 16.1 yard average, with a team leading 8 TDs. The 8 TDs is tied for eighth in a season, while the yards receiving is eighth and the receptions ninth. Noseguard Kibbie Leads Scots in Tackles Through the years jokes have been made about noseguards. But the season Josh Kibbie had in 2015 was no laughing matter. the senior finished as Edinboro s leading tackler with 74 stops, while also pacing the team in tackles for losses (10.0) and sacks (6.5). 5 } Shansky Return Should Bolster Defense A year ago, for the second time in three seasons, Edinboro lost a major contributor early in the season. Mike Shansky, a two time second team All PSAC West performer, missed all but the first game of the season after suffering a season ending injury late in the season opener against Saint Joseph s. A senior outside linebacker, Shansky led the Fighting Scots in tackles in 2014 with 84, along with leading the team in tackles for losses (8) and standing second in sacks (5.5). He received an injury redshirt waiver and returns in 2016 as a starter at outside linebacker. lineman led Edinboro in tackles since Ebby Hollins in Sisson Looking to Climb in Record Book Jake Sisson missed the last two games of the 2015 season, yet still threw for 1,960 yards and accounted for 2,226 yards in total offense in the nine games he played in. Sisson enters his junior year ranked 14th in career passing yards with 2,190, and is 17th in career total offense yards (2,422). Thomas Breaks Kickoff Return Records Mitch Thomas was busy as a freshman returning kickoffs. While doubling as a starting cornerback, Thomas broke school records for kickoff returns and kickoff return yards in a season. He returned 36 kickoffs for 871 yards in returns. That figure broke the record of 757 yards previously held by Eric Bosley. Bosley also held the record for returns with 28. Both had been set in Thomas also broke the school record for kickoff returns in a game with eight returns at East Stroudsburg. That broke the record of seven previously held by Bosley and Larry Pollick. Thomas averaged 24.2 yards per return, ranking fifth in the PSAC. Thomas First to Return Interception, Kickoff, and Punt for Touchdown In addition to setting the season kickoff return records, Mitch Thomas became the first player at Edinboro to return an interception, a kickoff, and a punt for a touchdown in the same season. He returned an interception 88 yards for a touchdown at Indiana(Pa.). Next came a 47 yard punt return for six points vs. Mercyhurst. He closed out the season with a 91 yard kickoff return for a touchdown at Millersville. Girvin Finds a Home at Defensive End Jon Girvin played three different positions in The starter at quarterback for eight games as a redshirt freshman in 2013, Girvin did not play in He returned to the Scots last year as a tight end, but he saw more action offensively as a backup quarterback. He scored rushing touchdowns against East Stroudsburg and IUP. Girvin was moved to defensive end to take advantage of his 6 5, 250 lb. frame late in the year. He saw action at defensive end the final four games, finishing the year with seven tackles and a pass broken up. Staunch Goes from QB to TE to OT Trey Staunch was one of Edinboro s top recruits a year ago. He was a standout in both football and basketball at West Middlesex High School as a prepster, throwing for 3,708 yards and rushing for 1,399 yards as the team s quarterback for his career. In basketball, he scored 2,131 career points and pulled over 1,000 rebounds. Staunch made the move to tight end as a freshman, where he appeared in all 11 games, with five starts. He would catch three passes. Midway through fall drills, Staunch made a much bigger adjustment, as the 6 4, 248 lb sophomore was moved to offensive tackle. he could see considerable action on a young and inexperienced line. Shansky, Kibbie, Hartin Most Experienced Returning Starters Edinboro returns seven starters on offense and six on defense, but the Fighting Scots lost quite a bit of experience in Jacob Potts (42 career starts), Jaycen Watts (27), Domenic Principale (25), and Joe Sullivan (22). Of particular note is that three of those players were offensive linemen. All told, a combined 91 career starts is gone from an offensive line that reduced its sacks total from 57 sacks allowed in 2014 to 24 a year ago. Wrestlers Make Their Marks as Gridders A trio of wrestlers could play a key role in how the defense performs in Sam Breese and Forrest Christmann both played a year ago, and figure to see plenty of action at defeneive end. Breese was a highly regarded wrestling recruit at Kent State who redshirted in , then transferred to Edinboro just before training camp a year ago. He would finish as the sixth leading tackler with 42, and was second on the team with 7.5 tackles for losses. Christmann wrestled for Edinboro for two years before joining the football team last fall. His progress was hampered by a thumb injury which forced him to miss three games. The redshirt junior finished with 9 tackles. Corey Beck played for the Fighting Scots in 2014, totaling 36 tackles, 7 tackles for losses, and a pair of interceptions while playing in all 11 games at strong safety. A year ago, he turned to wrestling and competed at 197 lbs., along with starting at heavyweight against West Virginia. He ended with a 3 4 record. The (Cory) Bell Will Not Toll in leading rusher Cory Bell is out indefinitely with an injury. The former transfer from ASA College finished with a team leading 522 yards on 112 carries in his first season as a Fighting Scots, with 3 TDs.
