4 Outlook Utah One Of MWC s Top Teams Utah is tied as the second-winningest team in the eight-year history of the Mountain West Conference. The Utes have the MWC s best conference record, best overall record and the most regular-season championships since the league began play in Conf. Pct. Titles Overall BYU UNLV Utah Wyoming Air Force New Mexico SDSU Colorado St TCU Senior center Luke Nevill is a Preseason All-MWC Selection. The top-returning center in the league, Nevill is a All- America candidate. T he second century of Utah men s basketball begins with the second season of the Jim Boylen era. Boylen s first year saw marked improvement on defense and in the win column. In year two, the Utes hope to make a serious run at returning to the NCAA Tournament. Defense, rebounding and the running game. Boylen s aspirations of building the Runnin Utes back to the pinnacle of success enjoyed in previous years begin with those three facets of the game. With a year of experience in this system I am hoping we can continue to improve in some key areas, said Boylen. The foundation that we laid last year and the depth we have added should allow us to improve our defense, our team rebounding and our ability to play an up-tempo, running style of basketball. We strive to have our defense produce more fast-break opportunities and earn some easier baskets off of the running game. The Utes return 77 percent of their offensive attack from last year, including seven of their top eight scorers. Leading the way is senior Preseason All-Mountain West Conference selection Luke Nevill, who led the squad in scoring (15.2 ppg), rebounding (6.7 rpg) and field goal percentage (.535). Nevill is considered the top returning big man in the MWC and one of best in the nation. An All-America candidate at center, he was the top-scoring player in the nation last year over seven feet tall. Nevill also became a defensive giant, leading the Utes and the MWC in blocks with 53, for an average of 1.61 per game. His 53 swatted shots marked the third-best single-season block total in Utah history. I have asked Luke to take more accountability for the way the team performs in addition to improving his individual contributions, said Boylen. I am coaching Luke to become a complete player on both ends of floor and that includes rebounding at a higher pace. We know he can score the ball and he is efficient around the basket but he needs to make sure he continues to improve at the defensive end of the floor. Two other three-year starters will also be key contributors for Utah this season. Senior guard Lawrence Borha and senior forward Shaun Green will be asked to bring senior leadership, defensive toughness and a scoring touch in their final season in the Crimson and White. Both players started all 33 games for the Utes in , with Green leading the team in minutes played (31.0 mpg). Each player logged an average of 7.6 points per contest and contributed 2.1 assists per game as well. Defensively, Green registered a career-high 29 blocks to go with 30 steals, while Borha added a career-best 23 steals. I am very proud of the development of Lawrence and Shaun, said Boylen. They have both improved in all facets of their game. Bohra is more disciplined at both ends of the floor and he has elevated his individual skill level. Shaun has become a leader on this team, improving his ball skills and his toughness. The fourth returning senior is guard Tyler Kepkay. A starter in 26 games last year, Kepkay contributed 7.5 ppg to the offense along with 68 assists. One of the top shooters on the squad, he is also a tenacious defender who picked up tremendous experience over the summer. Selected to the Canadian National Team that played in olympic qualifying in Greece, Kepkay also saw action in an exhibition against Team USA and was charged with guarding such NBA superstars as Kobe Bryant and Dwayne Wade. Tyler had a terrific summer of development as a player and a leader, said Boylen. He has taken more ownership of the day-to-day functions of our team. Tyler s skill level, shooting and scoring ability are attributes we will need to get the most out of this year. We will benefit from his consistent defensive effort and his toughness. The group of returning players also includes senior Jonathan Downie, juniors Kim Tillie and Luka Drca, and sophomores Carlon Brown, Morgan Grim, and Tre Smith. The six newcomers to Boylen s team include both instate standouts and highly-touted players from around the nation. Freshmen Jace Tavita and Josh Sharp, both local products from the Salt Lake City area, bring allstate credentials with them to the U. Jordan Cyphers, a six-foot-four-inch guard/forward named Mr. Basketball in the state of Kansas last year, adds a sharpshooting presence and could see significant time this season. Chris Hines was a top-20 player in the deeply talented state of Texas last year and seven-footer Jason Washburn was a national Top 100 player and lauded center out of Michigan. Kyle Perkins, a junior guard who transferred from Division-II Univ. of Colorado- Colorado Springs, was a late addition to the roster and will redshirt this season as a walk-on. The Utes graduated three players last season, but still only lost 23 percent of its scoring. The biggest loss will be felt in the form of second-team All-MWC guard M e d i a G u i d e

5 Outlook Johnnie Bryant, the team s second-leading scorer (14.2 ppg) and top three-point threat ( PT%) last year. This year s offense will again see the Utes play an execution-based attack that will rely heavily on the running game and converting in transition. Painttwos and three-point shooting will be central to Utah s gameplan. We would like to develop greater balance in our offense, said Boylen. We want to use our running game to push the ball, explore early options and then execute in the half court. We want to be able to play inside then outside, driving and pitching the ball. It is important to me that we share the ball and we honor our spacing. Spacing in our system gives each player the freedom to use his individual talents. Now we need to become better on-theball defenders individually and continue to trust each other in help and support situations, added Boylen. We have to be better at defending in late-clock situations and improve our ability to sustain our defense through full possessions. Points In The Paint With two players at seven feet or taller and only one player listed under six feet, Utah will be one of the biggest teams in the Mountain West, averaging nearly six-feet-six-inches per player. Led by Nevill (7-2, 265), scoring in the paint and defending around the basket should be strengths of this Utah squad. Entering his first season, Boylen emphasized the importance of defense improvement. In the year prior to his arrival, Utah ranked 322nd out of 325 NCAA Division I teams in field-goal percentage defense. Fast-forward through Boylen s inaugural season and the Utes found themselves ranked No. 73, a 249-position improvement in the ranking charts. This year s goal: the top 20. Our biggest improvement came in the development of a more consistent help defense, said Boylen. We had better awareness of ball pressure on the first side and shrinking supporting defenses on the second side. We developed more trust as a team last year. Additionally, Tillie (6-10, 215) has proven a viable force down low, but is also a skilled jumpshooter from mid and long range. Green (6-8, 220), one of the team s top three-point threats, also brings a dimension of strength and quickness to the paint that pays off both offensively and defensively. Those three players compliment each other extremely well, said Boylen. They give us great experience and depth up front. Kim s athleticism, Shaun s skill level and Luke s size allow us to have flexibility and versatility in the 4 and 5 spots. Tillie is the key here. If I need to take out Luke, I can put Kim in that position. It s the same thing with Shaun at the 4. Morgan Grim gives us that dimension as well. Grim (6-8, 220) and Downie (6-8, 225) provide additional depth down low for the Utes. Grim saw action in 26 games last year, averaging 5.2 minutes per appearance, and will look to increase his role this year after working hard in the offseason. Downie earned a roster spot last year as a walk-on and has been held over for this year s squad. He brings a tough, physical presence to practice and could see additional time on the floor this season. Senior Lawrence Borha provides leadership, intensity and defense while being one of Utah s primary ball handlers. create for their teammates, and will be a big part of the Utes offense. Joining Kepkay and Drca on the outside will be the high-flying Brown, a very athletic player entering his second year, that has drawn much excitement from Boylen and onlookers alike. With speed, quickness and a shooter s touch, Brown and his 6-5 frame could have a breakout season on both ends of the floor. Our philosophy is to have guys who can handle the ball and can score, said Boylen. We also want them to be able to defend multiple positions. Kepkay, Drca, Brown and Borha are all guys who can defend all over the floor, give us length on the perimeter and are comfortable handling the ball for us. That allows us to have great versatility and flexibility from our guards. We can rotate those guys and still keep our defensive intensity high. We can use that depth to wear people down. Shaun Green s size and range make him a scoring threat from anywhere on the floor. The senior needs 230 points to become the 34th Ute to hit of the 1,000-point mark in his career. From the Outside Kepkay and Drca lead a group of long, athletic guards and forwards who can do significant damage from the perimeter and are also capable of playing shutdown defense in Boylen s system. Splitting time at point guard last year, Kepkay and Drca combined for 189 assists. They will both be relied upon this year to give the Utes a steady and experienced presence handling the ball. Each can also slide to the two-guard spot to shoot and Cyphers (6-4, 185) and Tavita (6-4, 190) are two newcomers whom Boylen hopes will pay immediate dividends in the backcourt. Cyphers will bring a shooter s eye to the offense while Tavita is a ballhandler who is an improving perimeter shooter. Both could be asked early on to bring depth to the guard position and be explosive options off the bench. Cyphers is a six-foot-four-inch Johnnie Bryant who can make contested three-point shots, said Boylen. Tavita can make the defense shift and create scor- w w w. U t a h U t e s. c o m 5

That is a nice combination, not only for our future, but hopefully one that can impact this season and give us more depth as they gain game experience. Smith (5-10, 165), like Downie, is another player who earned a roster spot as a walk-on last year and was held over on this year s squad. Smith provides even more depth in the backcourt as he offers the ability to handle the ball and shoot from outside. Championship Scheduling Keeping with his philosophy that to be a great team you must play great teams, Boylen has crafted one of the toughest non-conference schedules in school history. With four marquee teams booked for Huntsman Center appearances, the Utes will play their best home schedule since the early 1970s. Season tickets are on sale now at UtahUtes.com and the Rice-Eccles Stadium box office. Our fans and our players deserve a schedule that reflects where we are headed with this program, says Boylen. We are bringing some strong teams into the Huntsman Center this year and we are prepared to prove we belong in their company. I firmly believe that to be an elite program - which is our goal - you need to schedule at the highest level possible. Playing teams you know you can beat does not make you better. We want to test ourselves against quality teams so that we are confident and prepared to succeed in postseason play. Also, we want to play teams that are appealing to the players we are recruiting to this program. This is a schedule everyone associated with our program can get excited about. Boylen unveiled the 7 Pillars of Utah Basketball at the team s first meeting M e d i a G u i d e Senior Tyler Kepkay s defense and toughness will be just as important as his shooting range and scoring ability. the kind of home court atmosphere that is so important for a successful season. Utah will also face some stiff challenges on the road, including a game with Oklahoma, which went and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament last year. Closer to home, the Runnin Utes must play Utah State in Logan, where the Aggies went 17-0 last year en route to a overall record. Another tough road test awaits in UC-Irvine, an 18-game winner last year. Highlights of the Utah home schedule include games with Oregon (Dec. 3), California (Dec. 10), Gonzaga (Dec. 31) and LSU (Jan. 6). Utah opens the season with an exhibition game against Grand Valley State, before beginning the regular season against Southwest Baptist - a team that won 22 games and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division II Tournament a year ago. We ve heard a lot of feedback from our fans over the years about our non-conference schedule, says director of athletics Dr. Chris Hill. Coach Boylen and his staff have addressed their concerns with this year s schedule, which is one of the best I ve seen in my long association with the Utah basketball program. We re hopeful that a schedule like this will entice our fans to not only buy season tickets, but to come to the games and create Equally as important to the Utes success will be their ability to come together off the court, a task easier said than done. Utah returns 10 players for their second season in Boylen s system, including five seniors and all five starters. Trying to find their place on the squad will be the six newcomers, playing their first season of D-I basketball. But Boylen has a system in place to accomplish this goal, one of accountability, caring and mental toughness. A New Team Philosophy Since day one I have felt that our players needed to take more ownership of this team, said Boylen. I strive for a player-coached team where our guys hold each other accountable to the seven pillars of our program. They have to continue to care for one another and support each other for us to be more successful. As we build this program back up, I am coaching my guys to put the team first and make winning the top priority.

A Ute is a member of the Native American tribe that first settled the state of Utah. There is plenty of disagreement in history and reference books regarding the meaning of the word Ute. Two of the more common definitions of Ute are high place and top of the mountain. A definition in a similar vein is people of the mountains. Yet other references have Ute defined as land of the sun. As a group, the Utes refer to themselves as Noochee, meaning the people. The University of Utah uses Ute as its nickname with permission from the Ute Tribal Council.
