3 BY THE NUMBERS 5 Radford has posted five straight winning seasons on its home floor at the Dedmon Center, going since the campaign 12.4 Radford led the Big South in offensive rebounds last season, pulling down 12.4 boards per game on the offensive glass 10 Coach Jones and the Highlanders coaching staff return 10 players from a season ago including seniors Bradford, Cosuin and Phillips TEAM NOTES LAST TIME OUT Radford 72, Georgia Southwestern 63 RADFORD, Va. Trailing by two through 20 minutes of play, the Radford men s basketball team erupted on a 21-5 run to begin the second half and never looked back, securing a victory over Georgia Southwestern at the Dedmon Center on Friday night. After pulling down an offensive board, senior center Randy Phillips tied the game at 32 just 40 seconds into the second stanza. Sophomore guard Donald Hicks came right back down the floor moments later to knock down a three and make it and the Highlanders owned the lead from then on out. for a double-double. It s like nothing has changed for the Lanham, Md. native, who ranked 32nd nationally with 14 double-doubles a season ago. The game began as a back-and-forth affair as the Highlanders 6-0 run was met with a 9-0 run by Georgia Southwestern. Radford then delivered yet another 6-0 run to make it a 12-9 contest and kept the lead for the next 11 minutes. GSW took advantage of some cold shooting from beyond the arc by Radford in the first half (3-for-16) as R.J. Sessions drove to the basket and laid it in with 1:12 to go to give the Hurricanes a lead heading into the break. IN MEMORY OF PAUL HERSHEY A beloved member of the Highlander family, Assistant Director of Communications Paul Hersey passed away in June after sustaining injuries in a car accident Paul, the former men s basketball contact at Radford, was taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital for treatment, but passed away two weeks after the accident In honor of Paul, Radford men s basketball will don a black and white patch featuring Paul s inititals on their uniforms for the entire season A facsimile is also featured on the cover of this year s game notes as an homage to the legacy Paul leaves behind A seat will also be left open at the media table for all home games at the Dedmon Center during the season so Paul can take a front row seat to watch the Highlanders Redshirt freshman Carlik Jones provided a huge spark off the bench, leading all scorers with 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting in his first collegiate action. He knocked down a team-leading two three-pointers, went 3-for-4 from the charity stripe and added four rebounds. Jones was one of four Highlanders to get on the score sheet off the bench, helping Radford earn a advantage over Georgia Southwestern in bench scoring. They also held a 15-3 lead in second chance points thanks to a dominant effort on the glass. The Highlanders tallied 45 rebounds compared to 28 for the Hurricanes, including 23 on the offensive glass. Junior forward Ed Polite, Jr. was relentless in the paint, recording 11 rebounds to go with his 12 points A slow start gave way to a better showing as the Highlanders knocked down 44-percent (16-for-36) of their shots in the second half, including a 44-percent (4-for-9) clip from distance to outscore the Hurricanes in the period. The SEC Network is a channel developed by ESPN, which airs 24/7 on various cable providers. The game can also be seen on the SEC Network+, which is found online. Wife: Dr. Sharon Jones Sons: Nate, Miles EDUCATION Undergraduate: Howard University (1990) Jones, the seventh head coach in program history, took over a program with just one win in the season prior to his arrival on campus and led a three-year turnaround that resulted in back-to-back 22-win seasons in and Radford competed in postseason play those two seasons as well, with Highlanders taking home the program s first and second postseason victories over Oregon State and Delaware State in the College Basketball Invitational. During his tenure, the Highlanders have defeated opponents such as Georgetown, Virginia Tech and Penn State with plans to add to that list. The success of the program has led to an increase in exposure all over the country with the team appearing on national television seven times and regional television 16 times. Radford s success can be attributed to the foundation laid in Jones s first season in the red and white with Big South all-freshman selections Javonte Green and R.J. Price. Green, who was Jones first All-Big South performer, and Price spearheaded the Highlanders resurgence to the top of the league. Under Jones tutelage, Green developed into one of the all-time greats in Radford men s basketball history. The Petersburg, Va., native finished his career second in scoring, first in rebounding, first in steals, second in free throws made, second in field goals made and first in games played. Price left RU ranked fourth all-time in scoring. The duo represents two of six Highlanders to turn pro following their career in Radford. Cam Jones, Rayshawn Davis, Cam Brown and Brandon Holcomb have all gone from learning under Jones to extending their basketball careers into the professional realm. The 6-5 forward averaged 9.5 rebounds per game to rank 31st in the NCAA, while becoming the first sophomore in program history to reach the 500 career rebound-mark and the second to do so in two seasons of play. The Highlanders opened the campaign with a double-overtime victory at Georgetown and followed up just 10 days later with a road win at Penn State, the program s first victory over a Big 10 opponent. Jones spent the and seasons at VCU, which included a magical run to the 2011 Final Four with wins over USC, Georgetown, Purdue, Florida State and Kansas. While on Shaka Smart s staff, the Rams posted 55 wins over the final two seasons Jones was on the staff, the highest total over any two-year span in program history. Prior to his second coaching stop in Virginia at VCU, Jones served a six-year stint on Dennis Felton s bench at Georgia from In 2008, Georgia advanced to the NCAA Tournament when the sixth-seeded Bulldogs won four games in three days to complete the most improbable SEC Championship run in conference history, which included a tornado striking the Georgia Dome and the tournament being moved to the Georgia Tech campus. Jones also previously worked under John Beilein at Richmond from and during the early stages of Beilein s rebuilding project at West Virginia in Jones was a four-year standout at Howard, where he forged a connection with fellow Howard alumnus, Felton ( 85), who he calls the biggest influence on his coaching career GAME 2: OSU
