3 BY THE NUMBERS 9 Nine underclassmen are set to don the Red and White in , Radford ranks fourth in youngest rosters in the Big South Radford leads the Big South and ranks eighth nationally in field-goal percentage defense, holding opponents to only 32.3 shooting from the floor. 20 Radford s ranks 20th in the country in scoring defense, holding opponents to a mere 53.2 points per game. TEAM NOTES HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS Radford dons the longest winning streak in In its loss to Kentucky, Radford finished 14 for 53 from the field for a 26.4 shooting percentage, their lowest mark since the 2016 Big South Tournament semifinals against Liberty (29.6) on March 12, The Highlanders were held to single-digits in the first three quarters, their first of the season. Janayla White, Destinee Walker and Brittany Allen paced the Highlanders with six points each. Sydney Nunley and Rachael Ross contributed five points each off the bench. The last time the Highlanders placed no players in double-figures came on March 18, 2015 in a WNIT first round matchup at East Carolina. White finished with a game-high 11 rebounds, her 23rd career game with 10-plus rebounds. She now has grabbed 11 rebounds in three straight games. The junior ranks second in the Big South with 8.5 rebounds per game. Having appeared in only six of Radford s nine games on the season, White has totaled 51 rebounds. Walker was held to her lowest points total on the season in the loss to Kentucky. The sophomore has failed reached to double-figures in only two games this season. Despite the 23-point loss to Kentucky, Radford held the Wildcats to a 34.9 field-goal percentage, the lowest mark by the Wildcats this season. Radford s defense has held opponents to under 40-percent shooting in every game this season, including six games under 35-percent. The Highlanders rank eighth nationally with a 32.3 field-goal percentage defense. In addition to their field-goal percentage defense, Radford ranks inside the Top 20 in scoring defense, holding opposing teams to 53.2 points per game. Through nine games, opposing teams have only scored 60 or more points in two games. Radford leads the Big South with 35 blocks, averaging 3.9 per contest. Three Highlanders rank inside the Big South s Top 10 in blocks. White is second with 1.5 per game, while Jayda Worthy and Nunley are tied for sixth with 0.9. SCOUTING VIRGINIA TECH The Hokies are off to their best start since the season when they started Virginia Tech is fresh off a overtime win against Auburn on Sunday, giving the Hokies their second win over an SEC opponent this season. The Hokies commanded a lead with 20 seconds remaining, but several miscues allowed Auburn to force overtime after outscoring Virginia Tech in the fourth quarter. In overtime, Virginia Tech used a 7-0 run to hold on for the victory. The overtime win saw the Hokies place four in double-figures. Sidney Cook led the team with a 23-point effort on 9 of 13 shooting from the field. Vanessa Panousis finished with 20 points with 15 coming from behind the arc. Two Hokies finished with double-doubles, while Chanette Hicks collected her first career double-double with 18 points and 13 assists. The 13 assists match a program record. Regan Magarity secured her fourth consecutive double-double with 12 points and 10 boards. As a result of her effort, Hicks was named ACC Player of the Week for the second time this season, giving her three weekly honors in Virginia Tech ranks seventh in the ACC and 42nd in the country with 76.3 points per game. The Hokie defense ranks sixth in the conference and 56th nationally with 57.5 points allowed per contest. Despite ranking 11th in the league with a 31.2 field-goal percentage from beyond the arc, Virginia Tech ranks 36th in the country with 82 made 3-pointers and 55th with 7.5 per contest. The Hokies don t commit many fouls on defense, ranking second in the ACC with only 15.6 personal fouls committed per game. Leading the Hokies and ranking eighth in the ACC, Hicks averages 16.9 points per game. The sophomore ranks 54th nationally with 186 points. Hicks quick hands have guided her to becoming the best thief in the country. She leads the country with 52 steals and 4.73 steals per contest. Altogether, Virginia Tech sport four players averaging double-digits on the season. Cook (14.9), Magarity (12.6) and Panousis (10.5)... follow Hicks. Samantha Hill is not far behind in giving the Hokies five players in double-figures. Hill is averaging 9.6 points per game. Virginia Tech relies heavily on its five starters as their bench is only responsible for 129 of the 839 points scored through 11 games. The Hokies have dominated the second half to start the season, outscoring opponents in the third and fourth quarters. Eight of Virginia Tech s 11 games this season have come in Cassell Coliseum. The Hokies are averaging 76.1 points per game at home with opponents only managing 52.6 per game. DYNAMIC DESTINEE Destinee Walker continues her blistering start to the season, scoring double-figures in all but one game. Ranking fourth in the Big South with 13.9 points per game, she has tallied 125 points in nine games which is second most in the league. Walker leads the conference with a 52.7 fieldgoal percentage, ranking 65th in the country. The next closest player to Walker in field-goal percentage in the Big South is Charleston Southern s Ke Asia Jackson with a 40.4 shooting clip. Walker is 48 for 91 from the field, including 9 of 22 from 3-point land. In addition to scoring, Walker ranks third in rebounding with 7.8 per game. Walker scored double-digits in the first six games to start the season. Set a career mark with a 22-point effort in a Dec. 4 win over UNC Greensboro. Walker entered the season having scored 10- plus points in only one game. In win over Davidson on Nov. 19, Walker played a career-high 34 minutes, earning her first career start in the game. 4 CRUNCH TIME Radford played in seven games that were decided by three points or less since the campaign. The Highlanders have posted a 5-2 mark in those games. Under head coach Mike McGuire, Radford is 15-8 in games decided by five points or less. ADIÓS AISHA Radford will need to fill the void left by 2016 graduate Aisha Foy, a two-time Big South Conference honoree. A threat from behind the 3-point line, Foy made 129, ranking fifth all-time. Foy finished her career with a point field goal percentage, ranking fifth in program history. She led the Highlanders in scoring during the season, averaging 12.2 points per game. Appearing in 113 games with earning 82 starts, Foy finished her career with 955 points. Named to the Women s Basketball Coaches Association s So You Want to be a Coach program. Current graduate assistant at Southeast Missouri St. ROSTER BREAKDOWN RU s roster features 13 players representing eight states and two countries. There are four players from Virginia and two from Ohio. Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Illinois and West Virginia have one player apiece, while Spain is represented on the international scale by Claudia Quevedo. The Virginia Beach, Va., product averaged 11.9 points and 10.0 rebounds per game a season ago, earning Big South first team honors in the process. 6 MIKE MCGUIRE Head Coach :: Fourth Season at COACH MCGUIRE: INSIDE THE Radford University officials introduced Mike McGuire on Wednesday, April 24, 2013 as the Highlanders seventh NCAA head women s basketball coach in program history. Widely recognized as one of the up-and-coming head coaches in the country, McGuire has quickly laid a solid foundation for the program moving forward. Despite a season ravaged by injuries, McGuire steered Radford to its most wins (18) since the season. The Highlanders, who tied for third in the Big South regular-season standings, advanced to the semifinals of the Big South tournament for the first time since Defense was the cornerstone of Radford s success. The Highlanders concluded the season ranked fifth in the nation in field-goal percentage defense (.333), 14th in scoring defense (53.3) and 16th in blocks per game (5.6). Individually, two Radford players (Janayla White and Aisha Foy) were named to the All-Big South first team for the first time since In just his second season at the helm ( ), McGuire guided the Highlanders to their third WNIT in school history. Radford, which finished with a overall record, including a 14-6 Big South ledger, finished tied for second in the Big South regular-season standings. It was the Highlanders highest finish in the conference standings since McGuire s work did not go unnoticed as the conference s 11 head coaches selected him Big South Coach of the Year, marking the sixth head coach in program history to earn the accolade. Before Radford, McGuire spent as an assistant coach at the University of Richmond where he helped lead the Spiders to five straight postseason berths and a overall record. For the second consecutive season in , Florida Basketball Magazine named McGuire one of the top assistant coaches in the nation, and at the conclusion of the season, National Basketball Insider recognized him as one of the Top-14 Mid-Major assistant coaches in the country. Prior to his move to Richmond, McGuire led Hidden Valley High School (Roanoke, Va.) to back-to-back Virginia Group AA state basketball titles in 2007 and He posted a 55-5 overall record while leading the Titans. McGuire is a 2000 graduate of Roanoke College where he spent one season after matriculating as the assistant coach for the men s basketball program. In that role, he served as the recruiting coordinator and junior varsity head coach. The Maroons posted a record in his only season as an assistant.
