This is the lone in-season tournament for the Rebels this season and marks the second time Ole Miss has been to Hawai i in the last four seasons. The Rebels last played in this tournament during the season. Rebels will be playing in an in-season tournament for the 38th consecutive season. The last time Ole Miss didn t play in an in-season tournament as during the season, the very first season of varsity basketball in Oxford. Faleru picked up her second consecutive double-double against Central Arkansas. The Alabama native grabbed 12 rebounds and scored 10 points, becoming the first Ole Miss player with back-to-back doubledoubles since Nikki Byrd during the season. McFarland s scoring streak is up to 89 consecutive games after the Edwards, Miss., native scored 13 points against Central Arkansas. She also started her 88th career game and made her 80th consecutive start against the Sugar Bears. rookie Shequila Joseph became the first freshman to score in double figures this season with her 14 points against Central Arkansas. Our search to find the right head coach took us to all corners of the country as we attracted top coaches from the basketball community. Coach Insell has coaching in his veins and was destined to be a head coach from day one. Coach Insell is viewed by many in college athletics as the top assistant coach in the country and his expertise in game planning, strategy, recruiting, and the student-athlete experience has been well chronicled. Being part of a re-building job at the University of Kentucky has enabled Coach Insell to gain the necessary requirements needed of our new staff as we re-capture the legacy that is Lady Rebel Basketball. He is the perfect fit to make this happen and we are excited he is joining our team. Ross Bjork, Ole Miss Athletics Director Matt Insell was named the eighth head coach of the Ole Miss women s basketball team on March 28, Insell spent the last five seasons as the top assistant with the nationally-ranked University of Kentucky women s basketball program. Insell helped guide Kentucky to four 20-win seasons and four trips to the NCAA Tournament in his time in Lexington. The Wildcats have ended the last four seasons ranked in the top-25 and were ranked as high as No. 7 during the season. Insell, who was responsible for the guards while also having recruiting and player development duties, and helped UK ink three top-10 recruiting classes and seven McDonald s All-Americans. I m very excited to be the new women s basketball coach at the University of Mississippi, Insell said. This is an opportunity I ve had my eye on for a long time and I just can t put into words how excited I am to be leading this team. I promise you this - we are going to put a team on the floor that is going to make the Rebel Nation very happy. Insell was instrumental in helping turn Kentucky into a national power in women s basketball. Picked to finish 11th in the SEC during the season, Kentucky made an Elite Eight run that year and reached the Elite Eight in three of the last four seasons. During his time at Kentucky, Insell helped develop guard A dia Mathies, a twotime SEC Player of the Year and All-America candidate, and Bria oss who was named SEC Freshman of the Year. He made the decision when he graduated high school to forgo playing collegiate basketball and concentrate on becoming a Division I head coach. I am very excited about the journey he has made. I don t know of a better place to build his legacy than the University of Mississippi. Matt is a fantastic fit for the program. Deb and I, along with our entire family, are very proud of him. Rick Insell, Head Women s Basketball Coach, Middle Tennessee State Ole Miss made a great decision when they hired Matt Insell. Matt is an excellent college basketball coach. I believe you have to be strong in many areas to be a quality college basketball coach. You can t be one dimensional. Matt is an outstanding recruiter, a tireless worker in the area of player development and very knowledgeable from an X and O standpoint. He always had a great feel regarding in-game adjustments that will prove valuable to him as a head coach. More important than any of that to me was his friendship to our family. He is like a member of our family. He was incredibly loyal to the Kentucky program, and we benefitted greatly from his contributions over the past five years. 5 Ole Miss vs. West Virginia Notables -This will be the third meeting between Ole Miss and West Virginia with the last meeting coming during the 1985 season. The Rebels own a 2-0 series advantage after a win during tournament action in Miami, Fla. -Ole Miss owns a 15-8 record against teams from the Big 12 conference and last played a team from the Big 12 during the season when they opened at Nebraska, who was a part of the Big 12 at the time. Ole Miss vs. Hawai i Notables -This will be the third meeting between Ole Miss and Hawai i. The series is actually tied, 1-1, as the Rebels dropped an overtime contest to the Rainbows, 64-57, when they last met during the season. -In the three times Ole Miss and Hawai i have played, each time Ole Miss has traveled to the island. The Rainbows have never made the trip to Mississippi. Ole Miss vs. Washington State Notables -This will be the first meeting between Ole Miss and Washington State. The Rebels own a 4-5 record against teams from the Pac 12 and have only played Arizona, Oregon State, Stanford and Washington. -Washington State is the lone team on the schedule this season that Ole Miss will be meeting for the first time. A Win over West Virginia Would -et the Rebels back in the win column, moving them to 2-1 on the season and also give them a win over a non-sec BCS opponent for the first time since defeating Illinois at this same tournament in Wins over West Virginia and Hawai i Would -Make the Rebels 3-1 on the season and give Ole Miss a 2-1 series advantage over the host Rainbows after losing to them in their last trip to Hawaii in Wins of West Virginia, Hawai i and Washington State Would -ive the Rebels and in-season tournament title for the first time since winning the Inn at Ole Miss Classic in It would give Ole Miss two wins over non-sec BCS conference schools for the first time since the Valenica McFarland Need For Points 65 1,200 Rebounds Steals Assists season when the Rebels defeated four teams from BCS conferences (Northwestern, Illinois, Penn State and Miami (Fla.). Scouting West Virginia West Virginia enters the weekend with a 0-1 record after a season-opening loss to Ohio State, As a team WVU shot 30.9 percent (21-68), and only 10 percent (2-20) from 3-point range. WVU is led in scoring by senior guard Christal Caldwell with 17 points. Fellow classmate Asya Bussie averages 14.0 points and 9.0 rebounds per game, while sophomore guard Bria Holmes rounds out the top three scorers with 12.0 points per game. Averee Fields helped WVU to a rebounding advantage in the last outing, pulling down 11 rebounds. Head coach Mike Carey is in his 12th season at the helm of the program. Scouting Hawai i The host Hawai i Rainbow Warriors also enter the weekend with a 1-1 record after splitting its opening road games in Arizona. Hawai i fell at Arizona State, 84-44, but bounced back with win over Northern Arizona, Kamilah Jackson leads the way for Hawai i with 14.o points per game. Ashleigh Karaitiana is also in double figures with 11.5 points per game. As a team, the host Rainbow Warriors are averaging 59.0 points per game, while opponents are scoring to a tune of 75.0 points per game. Head coach Laura Beeman is in her second season at Hawai i. Scouting Washington State Washington state enters the tournament with a 1-1 record after defeating Seattle, 81-72, on Tuesday (Nov. 12). The Cougars are averaging 73.0 points per game and have three players in double figures. Tia Pressley is leading the way with 18.0 points per game, while Lia alderia and Sage Romberg are averaging 15.5 and 12.5 points, respectively. The Cougars dropped their season-opener to Syracuse in the final seconds on Nov. 10. Head Coach June Daugherty is in her seventh season on the Washington State sidelines. About Ole Miss Ole Miss enters the weekend with a 1-1 record after falling to Central Arkansas, 66-63) on Sunday (Nov. 10). Last Time Out vs. Central Arkansas Despite cutting a Central Arkansas lead with threepointers from Claudia Ledesma Ortiz and Shequila Joseph, the Ole Miss women s basketball team dropped a heartbreaking contest at the Tad Smith Coliseum on Sunday (Nov. 10). Shequila Joseph led the Rebels (1-1) with 14 points, while Valencia McFarland added 13 points and five assists. Tia Faleru picked up her second consecutive double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Ole Miss held a rebounding edge in the contest. Faleru Doublin Up After posting just four double-doubles on the season in , junior Tia Faleru is already halfway to that mark this season after posting back-to-back doubledoubles in Ole Miss first two games. After posting 18 points and 10 rebounds against Jacksonville State, the Alabama native posted 10 points and 12 rebounds against Central Arkansas. She becomes the first Rebel to post consecutive games with a double-double since Nikki Byrd during the season. Byrd posted seven consecutive double-doubles that season. As of Wednesday, Faleru is the lone player from the SEC to have two double-doubles this season. Shaq Hits Double Figures Freshman Shequila Joseph, affectionately known as Shaq to her teammates, became the first of the freshman to score in double figures when she poured in 14 points against Central Arkansas. The rookie also tallied two big triples in the loss. Much Better From the Stripe Against Central Arkansas After struggling from the free throw line in the seasonopener against Jacksonville State, Ole Miss put it together against Central Arkansas going 15-of-16 with four players going perfect from the stripe. Doublin Up The Rebels aren t having trouble scoring and this season have averaged at least three players in double figures in each of their games. Tia Faleru and Valencia McFarland are each averaging 14.0 points per game and the lone players who have scored in double figures each game. Shequila Joseph and Diara Moore have also scored in double figures this season. Faleru Owning the Boards Tia Faleru has been a beast on the board for the Rebels. The junior is averaging 11.0 rebounds per game and currently lead the SEC in rebounding. In games against Jacksonville State and Central Arkansas, the opponent has had a player score 20 or more points and each team has also had a player post a double-double. Ole Miss opponents are averaging 64.0 points per game, giving Ole Miss a 7.5 point scoring margin. Despite the scoring margin, Ole Miss opponents are shooting at 40.9 percent, while the Rebels are shooting at just a 34.9 percent clip. McFarland Named Preseason All-SEC Senior guard Valencia McFarland picked up her second consecutive preseason All-SEC accolade as she earned a spot on the second team. The Edwards, Miss., native earns her second consecutive preseason accolade, also earning second-team honors last season. McFarland, a second team All-SEC selection as a sophomore, enters her senior season second among active SEC players in career assists (420) and fifth among active players in scoring with 1,107 career points. Rebels in the SEC Preseason Polls Ole Miss was picked to finish 13th in both the preseason SEC Media and Coaches Polls. The Rebels have won the SEC regular-season title in the season and have yet to win the SEC Tournament title. Youth Be Served (And We Aren t Talking About The Players) Ole Miss head coach Matt Insell, told his parents that he would be a head coach in the SEC by age 30 when he was 13 and well he was right. When Insell was hired on March 28, 2013, he was 30 years old. At the tipoff of the season, Insell is the second youngest coach in Division I, trailing only High Point s DeUnna Hendrix who is 29 years old. Insell is the youngest coach in the SEC and is the youngest coach of a BCS conference school. The next youngest coach of a BCS program is Colorado s Linda Lappe who is 33.
