The Dogs have only two wins at Hawai i since 1965, but the good news for Fresno State one of those wins was on their last trip in Factor in Hawai i is ranked higher in the national polls than it has ever been, owns a 29-9 record in WAC home games under coach June Jones, and leads the nation in scoring at just under 52 points per game, makes the trip even more diffi cult. Dogs vs. Warriors on ESPN2 The Fresno State football team will have a fi fth national television game in 2007 as ESPN announced this week it is adding the Fresno State vs. No. 12 Hawaii game on Nov. 10. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN2 beginning at 8 p.m. PT. Originally scheduled to be only televised locally in the state of Hawaii and Fresno, Calif., the matchup will be seen by a national audience through an agreement with the respective schools and conference. ESPN2 will show the matchup, utilizing the production of Fresno State s Bulldog Sports Network, across the United States except in Hawaii and Fresno. The Bulldog fans in the Valley will see the game exclusively on KFRE CW 59 (Comcast Cable channel 5). Ralph Wood and Randy Rosenbloom will call the action from Honolulu s Aloha Stadium. Against the Warriors The series, which began in 1938, sees Fresno State with a edge. Twelve of Fresno State s wins in the series came before Since then, the Warriors have 14 wins in 23 games. More recent history has shown an even series, with each team winning seven of the last 14 games. The Dogs have won two of the last three, losing last season in Fresno. Memorable Bulldog-Warrior Game Fresno State s 2005 win at Aloha Stadium, Oct. 29, 2005, was signifi cant for a number of reasons, most notablely it was just the second win at UH for the Dogs since Fresno State s defense did a great job against Colt Brennan and the Warriors holding them to one touchdown and two fi eld goals in a game that was televised by ABC. Wendell Mathis ran for 229 yards and three touchdowns as the Dogs rolled up 445 total yards. Fresno State picked off Brennan twice and held the Warriors to three second half points. The Games of November Pat Hill uses the words of former Bulldog coach Jim Sweeney to sometimes motivate his team, and one of his favorite Sweeney sayings is: The games of November are the ones you remember. Under Hill, the Dogs have taken that to heart with an impressive 29-9 record in games played in the 11th month. The Dogs have won 21 of their last 25 November games since the 2000 season for a winning percentage of 84 percent. Fresno State closes the regular season with four consecutive November games. Bowl Eligibility With the win over Utah State, the Bulldogs became eligible for a postseason bowl for the eighth time in the last nine seasons. Fresno State played in seven straight bowl games from before that string was snapped last season. The WAC has three bowl connections in 2007.

2 Head Coach Pat Hill All of the credit for the resurgence of Bulldog football can be traced to head coach Pat Hill. Hill took over a declining program and within three years won a championship and guided his team to a bowl game. More importantly, Hill infused academic integrity to the program. Since his arrival, the team GPA rose from a 2.21 to In Hill s third season, the Bulldogs earned a share of a WAC championship, made their fi rst bowl appearance since 1993 and produced a league-best six fi rst-team All-WAC players. In addition, Fresno State led the WAC academic scholars with 14 and produced the program s first Academic All-American, Payton Williams. That was just a start. Since then, Fresno State s NCAA Academic Progress Rate ranks in the top 10 percent of all Division I-A programs and is the fi fth-highest of all schools in the west. Under his direction, Fresno State built a new football practice facility that rivals any NFL franchise. One of the most visible signs of improvement has been in the Duncan Building training room, offi ces and locker room, which was modifi ed providing all student-athletes with a state of the art complex. Hill led the Bulldogs to a No. 22 fi nal national ranking in 2004, the highest for the school since Fresno State s had a seven-game bowl streak snapped in 2006, at the time the longest streak in the west. He has done it playing one of the most aggressive non-conference schedules in the nation. Since coming to Fresno State, Hill has continued his reputation as an outstanding recruiter. His fi rst recruiting class produced four NFL draft choices including the No. 1 overall pick David Carr and four other players who signed NFL free agent contracts. Jefferson 88-yard kickoff return for a touchdown as the Dogs beat Utah State in Bulldog Stadium. Fresno State had two backs rush for more than 100 yards, as senior Clifton Smith had a career-high 126 yards and freshman Ryan Mathews had 106 yards and two touchdowns in the fi rst half before leaving with an injury. Last Game Tidbits Clint Stitser s 52-yard fi eld goal in the second quarter was the longest of his brilliant career and the longest by a Bulldog in 20 years. It was the second-longest in the WAC this season. Barry Belli was the last Bulldog to connect on a longer fi eld goal when he hit one from 53 yards against Washington State on Sept. 7, 1987 The Dogs tacked on their 74th blocked kick of the Pat Hill era and fourth of this season when freshman linebacker Ben Jacobs blocked a 27 yard attempt by Peter Caldwell. It was the fi rst of Jacobs career A.J. Jefferson s 88-yard kick return for a touchdown was the 33rd special teams touchdown by the Dogs in the Pat Hill era the Dogs improved their record against the Aggies to in Bulldog Stadium and all-time in Fresno... Hill got his 50th home victory. Rushing Point When Fresno State s rushing offense, ranked No. 19 in the NCAA, faces off against the Hawai i rush defense, ranked No. 1 in the WAC and No. 17 in the nation, something has got to give. In the Pat Hill era, the Bulldogs have had success against the Warriors when they ve had success running ball. Fresno State has never lost a game to UH when rushing for more than 200 yards. Here s a breakdown. Smith had previously shared the record with Phil Borjas ( ). It was his second return for a touchdown this season. He needs one more for the single season record, held by Borjas in He is one shy of the all-time WAC record of six set by Hawaii s Chad Owens ( ). Smith owns the Fresno State career record punt return average of 17.6 ( yards). Smith s nickname is Batman, his favorite superhero. Also known as the Academic Heisman, the Draddy Award honors the football player who best exemplifi es the combination of academic and athletic accomplishments. He s the second Bulldog on recent years to be honored. Former Bulldog safety Tyrone Culver, now a player for the Green Bay Packers, who selected a semifi nalist in his senior season of Stitser, a record-setting player, won the 2007 Dean s Medal as the top graduate in the Craig School of Business and maintains a perfect 4.0 GPA as he enters an MBA program. Not Your Average Bear There has not been a tight end in Fresno State history quite like Bear Pascoe. With his size (6-5, 260 lbs.), speed and hands, he s emerging as one of the nation s top tight ends in his junior season. Pascoe leads the squad in receptions (37), receiving yards (462) and touchdowns (4), and ranks among the best in his position nationally. With three touchdown

3 Fresno State Honor Roll As Fresno State s football team continues to make great strides on the football field, the Bulldogs are continuing to reach unprecedented academic success. The Bulldogs are coming off their best semester of academic achievement in the Pat Hill era, as 49 players achieved a 3.0 Grade Point Average or higher, four of them achieved a perfect 4.0 GPA. As a team, the Bulldogs posted a composite GPA of 2.76, which equates to a B average. 13 Dogs Earn Academic All-WAC Fresno State football players once again made a great impact on the Academic All-WAC team in 2006, as 13 players made the team. That was two fewer than Fresno State had in 2005, which was a program record. Since Hill became head coach, Fresno State has produced a total of 93 Academic All-WAC selections, more than any other program in the WAC. Prior to his arrival, Fresno State had just nine academic All-WAC selections. Here are the 2006 Academic All-WAC student-athletes: Nate Adams, Sr., Construction (3.29); Tom Brandstater, Jr., Communication (3.23); Jordan Christensen, Sr., Sports Psychology (3.43); Shannon Dorsey, Jr., Industrial Technology (3.21); Jaron Fairman, Sr., Health Science (3.02); Joe Fernandez, Sr., Sports Psychology (3.66); Moses Harris, R-Fr., Undeclared (3.60); Ikenna Ike, Jr., Business Management (3.16); Ryan Machado, R-Fr., Criminology (3.23); Ryan McKinley, Jr., Business Management (3.01); Josh Sherley, Sr., Business Entrepreneurship (3.05); Clint Stitser, Jr., Business Finance (4.00); Ryan Wendell, Jr., History (3.23) Leading the Academic All-WAC Pack Since the hiring of Hill, the Bulldogs lead the WAC with 93 Academic All-WAC selections. Prior to Hill s hiring, Fresno had just nine academic All- WAC student-athletes. Here s what s happened since then. He has two blocked fi eld goals this season, four in his career. Against Nevada, he blocked a fi eld goal that led to a 40-yard touchdown return by A.J. Jefferson. Among the three are two seniors, kicker Clint Stitser and linebacker Marcus Riley. More impressive is junior quarterback Tom Brandstater, who graduated in three-and-a-half years, and enters this fall with his degree in hand. Only 11 schools have more graduates on their 2007 football roster than Fresno State. Hill: A Rock of Stability Pat Hill has the longest coaching tenure of any WAC coach, with two full seasons more at Fresno State than June Jones at Hawaii. After that, no other current WAC coach has been in his position for more than three consecutive years. Since Hill got his fi rst head coaching job at Fresno State in 1997, there have been 15 head coaching changes among the rest of the WAC schools. Of coaches in the West, only Mike Bellotti of Oregon has been at the same school longer. As a comparison, no coach in the Big 12 Conference has been there longer than Hill s been at Fresno State. Three different coaches have been at Stanford in the time Hill s been at Fresno State. Dennis Franchione, a former WAC coaching opponent of Hills, has changed schools twice (Alabama and Texas A&M) since the two coaches last met each other on the fi eld in The same for Dennis Erickson, who held coaching jobs with the San Francisco 49ers, Idaho and Arizona State, since he last coached against the Bulldogs while at Oregon State during the 2002 season. Hill Climbs Career Victory List Pat Hill s win total with the Bulldogs stands at 82, the second-most in program history. Only Jim Sweeney, for whom Hill was an assistant from , has more wins. Sweeney, who served as Fresno State s head coach from and , had 143. Mathews Explodes Freshman Ryan Mathews continues to be one of the top freshman running backs in the nation. He has three of the four longest runs from scrimmage by any Bulldog player this season, 67, 58 and 54 yards. He s one of the top freshmen running backs in the nation. Among his rookie peers, he has the best average yards per carry (6.48) and is tied for the lead in touchdowns (9). Of the top 50 running backs in the NCAA statistics, his per carry average ranks as the seventh-best. He is tied with Ian Johnson for the WAC lead in rushing touchdowns and ranks second behind La Tech s Daniel Porter (7.3) in yards per carry. He broke the Bulldog freshman record for rushing touchdowns by freshman and needs one more in the final four games to break into the Fresno State career top 10 list. Mathews is the national leader in touchdowns and average yards per carry by a freshman. Big Ben After the fi rst season in a Bulldog uniform, you would think Ben Jacobs has been Fresno State s leader on defense for years. The redshirt freshman was forced into action with a season-ending injury to senior Ahijah Lane. He opened the year with two excellent games, especially against No. 23 Texas A&M, in which he led the team with 16 tackles. He has 64 tackles (7.1/game), second on the team, and 10th in the WAC. He blocked a field goal against Utah State, the fi rst of his career.

4 Fresno State Facts Bulldog Stadium at Jim Sweeney Field Since taking over Bulldog Stadium in 1980, Fresno State has one of the best home records in college football. One of the most beautiful stadiums in the Western Athletic Conference, Bulldog Stadium underwent a two-phase expansion project in 1991, increasing seating by 10,000 to a capacity of 41,031 and adding 22 sky suites. Jim Sweeney was Fresno State s head coach ( , ) who won eight conference championships, five bowl game titles and guided the Bulldogs to a record and won 200 games as a college coach, 16th most in NCAA history. One of Hill s fi rst tasks was hiring John Baxter as associate head coach. Baxter s trademarked Academic Gameplan is a proven winner across the nation. In the third year of Academic Gameplan, the football program produced a WACbest 14 scholar-athletes, the school s first Academic All-American and the number of honored athletes at the annual Kiwanis Torch of Excellence dinner grew from four to 33. The team s GPA was raised from 2.12 to 2.77 in three seasons. Academic Gameplan has been featured in many publications, including the Dec. 20, 1999, issue of Sports Illustrated. Academic Gameplan is used by Oregon, Washington State, Southern Miss and Notre Dame. Since 1997, the Bulldogs have produced 94 Academic All-WAC performers, more than any team in the league during that period. Fresno State s Academic Progress Rate (APR) of 950 was the fourth-highest among schools in the west. Only Stanford, Air Force and Utah has higher scores than the Bulldogs. V is for Valley Fresno State prides itself on being the Valley s team. This pride can be seen in the form of a large green V on the back of the Bulldog helmets as a symbol to the agricultural community of Central Valley of California. The San Joaquin Valley is the world s richest agricultural valley in export dollars. The Bulldog Foundation This volunteer organization raises over $8 million annually for the Fresno State Athletics Department. The BDF is headed by Associate Athletics Director Danny White. The monies raised by the BDF Annual Fund go towards scholarships. Fresno State Identification The offi cial name of the school is California State University, Fresno. For athletics department purposes, the University prefers to be called simply Fresno State never Fresno State University. For graphics or abbreviations, we ask that you please use FS not FSU or CSUF. Wendell was named to the Rimington Award and Outland Trophy preseason watch lists. Despite only starting four games at center in his career prior to the season, although he has 32 starts at guard and a streak of 40 consecutive starts, Wendell s stats are pretty impressive. He was a fi rst-team Freshman All-American in 2003, and been a leader on the Bulldog line that allowed a total of 26 sacks over two seasons, fewest in FS history. Due to injuries on the line, Wendell returned to left guard before the La Tech game. He returned to center last week against Utah State due to an injury to Joe Bernardi. Stellar Stitser Senior kicker Clint Stitser will fi nish his career as one of the best at his position in school history. He likely will also be the top academic performer in Bulldog football history. Stitser, who has a perfect 4.0 GPA with 157 units, graduated in May and is pursuing his MBA in the prestigious Craig School of Business. As an academic senior, he was honored by his college as the top graduate for 2007 and a fi nalist for the President s Medal, as the top graduate at Fresno State. His career fi eld goal percentage of 69% ranks fi rst in school history. He made a career-best 52 yard fi eld goal last week, the longest by a Bulldog in 20 years. Riley has been one of the most impressive linebackers in the nation to date, but it hasn t come easy for the talented player. Riley was Fresno State s second-leading tackler in 2005 before suffering a season-ending injury against No. 1 USC. That injury had lingering effects in 2006, in which he was only able to play fi ve games. After countless hours of rehabilitation and work in the weight room, Riley is back to full strength, better than ever, and making a case to become the WAC Defensive Player of the Year, an award a Bulldog has won twice since He ranks 18th in the NCAA in tackles and has led the team in tackles in fi ve games, including a career-high 15 tackles at No. 23 Texas A&M. 6 Fresno State Football at a Glance As head coach Pat Hill embarks on his 11th season at the helm of the Bulldogs, certain facets of his program have become familiar not only in the San Joaquin Valley, but nationwide as well. Here is a look at some of the more familiar aspects of Fresno State football: Graduation Rates and NCAA APR When Pat Hill took over at Fresno State, the graduation rate for the football program was 25 percent. In 2002, Hill s fi rst recruiting class and fi rst graduating class had a graduation rate of 64 percent. Here are some more facts about the football program and it s academic success: Fresno State s recently released NCAA APR of 950 ranked higher than the national average of 929 and was the highest among WAC schools. The Bulldogs have produced 94 Academic All- WAC selections since Hill became head coach, the most in the conference. Prior to Hill s arrival, the Bulldogs had produced only nine Academic All-WAC players. Fresno State had 49 of 103 football players achieve a 3.0 GPA or better last season, most in school history. Fresno State had a school-record 14 Academic All-WAC selections in the fall of A Bulldog football player has won the Craig School of Business Dean s Medal winner each of the last two years. Clint Stitser won the award in 2007, while Kevin Cooper won in Cooper was also selected the President s Medal winner as the top graduate at Fresno State. Scheduling Philosophy In order to gain national respect, Hill will continue to select games against the nation s top programs, meaning the Bulldogs will play many games on the road in hostile environments. While scheduling is diffi cult, Fresno State will continue to play an aggressive schedule. This year, Fresno State plays at Texas A&M, at Oregon and hosts Kansas State and Sacramento State. In the coming years, non-conference games against Cincinnati, UCLA, Kansas State and Wisconsin have been scheduled. Non-Qualifiers A perception exists that the Bulldogs are comprised primarily of non-qualifi ers, or props, as they are commonly known. In actuality, nothing is further from the truth. In July 2002, Fresno State instituted a new policy prohibiting the recruitment and signing of non-qualifi ers beginning with the academic year. Building a New Tradition on the National Level In the 1970 s, Florida State was an emerging college football power. This is the model Pat Hill uses and talks about with his players. In the 1980 s, Miami (Fla.) emerged on the national scene. Then in the 1990 s, Virginia Tech rose from obscurity to become a national championship contender. Hill s goal is to make the Bulldogs the team of the 2000 s. He will settle for nothing less than to become a perennial top 25 program and to be considered for a BCS bowl game. Over the last six seasons, Fresno State s 10 wins over BCS opponents ranks best among non- BCS schools and the Bulldog s as does the total number of BCS opponents (21). terback taken as the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft and another selected in the top 10. Of those, only Fresno State s quarterbacks are both still active. Fresno State is one of fi ve schools (Tennessee, Washington State, Oregon and Houston are the others) to have two QB s selected among the top 10 NFL Draft picks. Of those, only Fresno State s are still active. Fresno State s Trent Dilfer is one of only two top 10 drafted quarterback since 1990 to win a Super Bowl. Peyton Manning is the other. There have been 18 quarterbacks taken in the top 10 picks of the NFL Draft since 1990, and Fresno State has produced two of them. Of the last fi ve quarterbacks taken as NFL No. 1 overall pick, only Fresno State s David Carr started the fi rst game of his rookie season. Fresno State is one of four schools to produce two quarterbacks (Kevin Sweeney and Paul Pinegar) who threw for more than 10,000 career passing yards. Here are the others: Louisiana Tech (Luke McCown & Tim Rattay); Marshall (Bryon Leftwich & Chad Pennington); and USC (Carson Palmer & Matt Leinart). 8 More on HIll Hill and the NFL Pat Hill s experience in the NFL has been a staple of Fresno State s continued success of sending players to the professional ranks. Hill gained famed as one of the top personnel evaluators in the NFL during his five-year tenure with the Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens. Hill s NFL experience is chronicled below: Recruited and coached NFL No. 1 Draft Pick David Carr and 2005 fi rst-round pick Logan Mankins. Fresno State had a WAC leading four NFL picks in Four other players signed NFL free agent contracts that year. Two of Hill s three senior starting quarterbacks are in the NFL (Carr and Billy Volek, San Diego Chargers). In his eight seasons, he has produced 28 NFL players. In his nine seasons, he has produced 19 NFL draft picks and 35 NFL players. Hill vs. the Competition Following is a breakdown of Pat Hill s record since arriving at Fresno State in 1997: WAC (current membership) Boise State Hawaii Idaho Louisiana Tech Nevada New Mexico State San Jose State Utah State Non-Conference Air Force Brigham Young California Colorado Colorado State Georgia Tech Kansas State LSU Michigan State New Mexico Ohio State Oklahoma Oklahoma State Oregon Oregon State Portland State Sacramento State San Diego State Tennessee TCU Texas A&M Texas Tech Toledo Tulsa UCLA UNLV USC Utah Utah State Virginia Washington Weber State Wisconsin Wyoming Totals Longest Winning Streaks Under Hill Dog Bones (Team Notes and Trends) FS is (.806) under Pat Hill at home. Fresno State has produced a 1,000-yard rusher in 11 of the last 13 seasons, including in 2006 as Dwayne Wright surpassed that mark. It marked the sixth consecutive year Fresno State has produced a 1,000-yard rusher. Under Hill, Fresno State is 10-1 in WAC openers. Five of the Bulldogs last six conference lid-lifters have come on the road. Fresno State has won its last seven home openers in a row. FS has thrown 245 touchdowns and 108 interceptions since Pat Hill became head coach. The Bulldogs have not been shutout in the last 165 home games dating back to Oct. 25, 1980, vs. Utah State (14-0). Fresno State has scored in 186 of the last 187 home games. FS is under Pat Hill when the Bulldogs throw more touchdown passes than their opponents. FS is 57-7 under Pat Hill when the Fresno State has less turnovers than their opponents. Fresno State is +63 in turnover margin since Pat Hill became head coach. Fresno State has produced 16 fi rst-team All-WAC defensive players over the last six seasons. The Bulldogs have led the WAC in scoring in four of the last 12 years, including a nation s best 40.5 average in The Dogs averaged 40.2 points per game in 2004, which ranked fi fth in the nation in scoring offense. FS has produced three quarterbacks (Trent Dilfer, Billy Volek and David Carr) who set NCAA records in the last 10 years. All have been starters in the NFL, Dilfer with the San Francisco 49ers, Volek with the San Diego Chargers and Carr with the Carolina Panthers. Each of Pat Hill s starting quarterbacks (Billy Volek, David Carr and Paul Pinegar) were selected fi rst-team All-WAC by the end of their career. FS has produced two fi rst-team All-WAC punters (Jason Simpson, 2001; Jeff Roberts, 1998) since FS has produced two WAC Defensive Players of the Year since 2001 (Alan Harper and Garrett McIntyre) The Bulldogs have dominated the All-WAC kicking awards recently with three fi rst-team all-league picks (Asen Asparuhov, 2001 and 2002; Jeff Hanna, 1999) and one second team All-WAC selection (Brett Visintainer, 2003) since Fresno State is in its last 55 games when the starting running back scores a touchdown. The Bulldogs are in their last 50 games when scoring fi rst. The Bulldogs have won 16 of their last 23 games when scoring fi rst. Pat Hill s 82 victories as head coach of Fresno State ranks second all-time in program history. Only Jim Sweeney, 143 wins, has more.
