Akron, BYU, Duke, Gonzaga, Kansas, Louisville, North Carolina, Ohio State and San Diego State were the only teams on this list to crack 20 wins last season. On the coaching side of 20-win seasons, head coach Keith Dambrot is currently 10th among active coaches with current 20-plus game winning streaks (11). In his 13-year career at UA, Dambrot has collected 286 career wins in 419 games, which is two wins shy of tying the all-time win mark held by Russell Beichly. Beichly coached the Zips from 1941 to In those 19 seasons he reached 288 wins in 432 games. In addition, Dambrot is just six wins away from 400 career victories as a collegiate coach and 14 wins shy of his 300th all-time at Akron. REBOUNDING AFTER A LOSS Since the start of the season, the Zips have been one of best teams in the nation when it comes to rebounding after a loss. Excluding season-ending losses, Akron is (.736) following a loss. In head coach Keith Dambrot s 13-year tenure, Akron has only posted 24 losing streaks. 5 THE NUMBERS ON AKRON HOOPS... 3 Akron has won three MAC tournament titles in the last eight seasons to represent the league in the NCAA Tournament. 14 The number of times the Zips have finished in the top-three in the MAC East since divisional play began during the season. 19 Only 11 teams have at least 19 wins every season since the start of the campaign, including the Zips. 21 Akron is one of just five programs in all of Division I basketball to post at least 21 wins in each of the last 11 seasons. 61 The number of wins in league play the Zips have posted since the start of the 2012 MAC schedule (61-25,.709). 80 Akron has posted 80 winning seasons in 116 years of basketball The Zips have a home winning percentage of 88.0 since the start of the campaign (168-23). 141 Akron has posted 141 wins in conference play since the season (141-61,.698). The Zips 141 wins are the most in the league during that stretch. 168 Akron has posted 168 home wins under 13thyear head coach Keith Dambrot (168-23,.880). 286 The number of wins the Zips have posted since the start of the season, the most victories in the MAC. 525 The number of consecutive games that Akron has made at least one 3-point basket. 1,561 The Zips have won 1,561 games in their 116 seasons of basketball. Akron was the 56th Division I program to post 1,500 all-time wins. THRIVING IN A NEW ROLE With the loss of two starters and a third key player from the Akron s MAC Championship run, more minutes have been available for junior guard Jimond Ivey, and he has made the most of his time on the court. Ivey has played himself into the starting lineup after three starts due to an injury to point guard Noah Robotham. So far, Ivey has taken full advantage of the new role, making four starts in 11 games and scoring in double digits in six games, including a career-high 20 points and a personal best 11 rebounds. In addition, he posted his first career double-double against American that included 12 points and a career-best 11 boards. In 11 games, Ivey averages 25.5 minutes with 9.5 points on 53.1 percent shooting from the field. He drained 34-of-64 shots and is third on the squad with 5.6 rebounds per game, 62 total rebounds with 48 defensive and 14 offensive. FIRE AND ICE We are not talking hot and cold, rather high intensity and fast play mixed with a methodical calculated approach to describe Akron s backcourt. The combination of junior guards, Antino Jackson and Noah Robotham, provide the Zips with that type of leadership. Both, Jackson (Fire) and Robotham (Ice) are a threat with or without the ball in their hands. Jackson, and his high-energy approach, is always in attack mode. He has the ability to beat an opponent off the bounce and uses a devastating step back to generate several different types of open looks. He is third in team scoring (10.9 ppg), and has buried 21 long distance field goals. He shoots 43.8 percent from the field and 40.4 from deep and has a second-best 10 steals, while adding 2.5 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game. On the other hand, Robotham has a methodical approach to navigating the offense and picking apart defenses. His change of pace during play keeps defenders on their heels as he contributes a 11.2 points per outing following a career-high 27-point performance against Marshall. He has 19 assists and six steals. He shoots 46.3 percent from the floor and a team-best 43.5 from behind the 3-point arc, burying 20 triples this season. FRESH START The Akron Zips continue to improve its bench play this season with the help of five newcomers, two freshmen and three redshirt freshmen, whom are beginning to see more and more action. Playing in all 11 games are freshmen Tavian Dunn-Martin and Michael Hughes, while second-year freshmen, Emmanuel Olojakpoke, Daniel Utomi, and Craig Eubanks are starting to see their roles increase. Dunn-Martin has made an immediate impact from the outside, draining 13-of-33 long distance shots for a point FG shooting percentage. In 149 minutes, Dunn-Martin owns a 40.0 FG shooting percentage (20-of-50) en route to adding 5.7 points per game. As a backup point guard, Dunn-Martin has dished out 15 assists and made 13 trips to the charity stripe, draining 10 bonus buckets for an 76.9 free throw percentage. Hughes has logged 107 minutes in the center position, second most of the newcomers. He has scored 24 points and pulled down 18 rebounds in 9.7 minutes per game. Hughes has nine blocked shots and four steals. Olojakpoke is a rim protector who managed to block four shots against Coppin State. In 47 minutes played, he is shooting 60 percent on 9-of-15 shots from the field and has pulled down 16 rebounds with five blocks. Meanwhile, Utomi has a knack for scoring the ball. He is 9-of-17 from the floor for a 52.9 shooting percentage, including a 40 percent effort from downtown. 6 The Dambrot Coaching Tree A key part to Keith Dambrot s success has come from the knowledge and expertise of his coaching staff. Comprised completely of individuals that have played for him, both at Akron and previous coaching stops, the current staff includes Zips assistant coaches Terry Weigand (Tiffin, ), Rick McFadden (Akron, ) and Charles Thomas (Eastern Michigan, ), as well as director of basketball operations Steve McNees (Akron, ). Shaka Smart, a Dambrot assistant from , was at VCU for six seasons and led the Rams to the 2011 Final Four. Now, Smart is in his second year as head coach for Texas. Lamont Paris ( ) enters his seventh season with the Big 10 Wisconsin Badgers, while Jeff Boals ( ) left Ohio State to pursue a head coaching position at Stony Brook. Dambrot s Basketball Tradition Dambrot s blood is rich with basketball tradition. Irwin was the MVP of the NCAA Tournament that season and the No. 1 draft pick (selected seventh overall) by the New York Knicks that same year. Dambrot s father, Sid, starred at Duquesne during the 1952, 53 and 54 seasons. The Dukes competed in the NCAA Tournament and the NIT in 52, as well as, the NIT in the 53 and 54 campaigns.
