The Miners (14-16) will face either fifth seed Rice or 12th seed Southern Miss in the tournament quarterfinals on Thursday (March 9) at 1 p.m. Mountain time/2 p.m. Central. The game will be televised on the American Sports Network. In El Paso, it can be seen on KFOX Channel 14 or over the air CBS 4.2. Please check local listings for availability on satellite packages. Rice (21-10) and Southern Miss (9-21) will square off in the first round of the tournament on Wednesday at 1 p.m. Mountain time/2 p.m. Central. Rice beat Southern Miss twice this season, on Jan. 21 in Hattiesburg (61-58) and on Feb. 23 in Houston (72-71 in overtime). The winner of Thursday s game will advance to Friday s semifinals at 10:30 a.m. Mountain time/11:30 a.m. Central. That game will be shown on CBS Sports Network. The championship game is on Saturday, March 11 at 6:30 p.m. Mountain time/7:30 p.m. Central (CBS Sports Network). UTEP is 1-1 versus Rice and 1-2 versus Southern Miss in conference tournaments. The Miners beat the Owls in the 2005 WAC semis (85-77) in Reno, and lost to the Owls in the 2007 C-USA first round (77-74) in Memphis. UTEP beat the Golden Eagles in the 2006 C-USA quarterfinals in Memphis (66-47), lost to the Golden Eagles in the 2013 C-USA semifinals in Tulsa (85-67), and lost to the Golden Eagles in the 2014 quarterfinals in El Paso (64-56). "D.a."'s LAST STAND UTEP s lone senior, Dominic Artis, will be playing in his fourth and final conference tournament this week. He participated in five Pac- 12 Tournament games while playing at Oregon for two years ( ), and started all three contests in 2013 when the Ducks made a march to the title in Las Vegas. His career conference tournament numbers, over seven games, are 49 points (7.0 ppg), 23 rebounds (3.3 rpg) and 27 assists (3.9 apg) with a.390 (16-for-41) field goal percentage,.333 (5-for-15) three-point field goal percentage and.706 (12-for-17) free throw percentage. COACH FLOYD IN CONFERENCE TOURNAMENTS UTEP s Tim Floyd is in 21 conference tournaments with three titles and nine berths in the title game. The titles came in 1990 at New Orleans, 1996 at Iowa State and 2009 at USC. His teams were conference tournament runner-up in 1989, 1991 and 1993 (New Orleans), 1995 (Iowa State), 2007 (USC) and 2011 (UTEP). UTEP has won its first game in the C-USA Tournament every year under Floyd, who is in his seventh season. Floyd s teams (including USC from ) have advanced in the conference tournament in nine consecutive seasons. The Miners, meanwhile, have advanced in their last seven C-USA Tournament appearances dating back to 2010, and in eight of the last nine years. SERIES NOTES UTEP leads the Rice series and has won 17 of the last 21 meetings between the schools, including seven in a row. UTEP owns a advantage in the Southern Miss series, but the Golden Eagles have won eight of the last 12 matchups and seven of the last 10. UTEP 79, RICE 71 (FEB. 18) Paul Thomas scored 15 of his 17 points in the second half, and UTEP led from start to finish in a victory in Houston. UTEP jumped out to a 16-6 lead, led by as many as 14 in the second half and met every charge by the Owls, who had their five-game win streak snapped. The Miners crushed Rice in the paint, 24-10, and made 9-of-14 three pointers (64.3 percent). Dominic Artis scored 16 points with six rebounds, seven assists and three steals. Omega Harris scored 15 points with an efficient shooting night (6-for-10 FGs, 3-for-4 3FGs). Jake Flaggert was 3-for-3 from long range, all in the second half. Thomas made 7-of-9 shots and added 11 rebounds. Rice s three big guns -- Marcus Evans, Egor Koulechov and Marcus Jackson -- combined to score 31 points on 7-for-26 shooting from the field, 4-for-18 from three. SOUTHERN MISS 73, UTEP 65 (JAN. 7) Omega Harris and Dominic Artis combined for 49 points, but Southern Miss converted 16 Miner turnovers into 24 points and raced to a victory in Hattiesburg. UTEP trailed at halftime and got down by 11 early in the second half. The Miners scored the next seven points to make it 48-44, but couldn t get closer. Another key stretch came midway through the second half when, after Harris free throw made it a six-point game (54-48), Southern Miss Robert Thomas nailed a three pointer. Finally, with UTEP trailing by six (69-63) and under two minutes left, Artis and Harris missed a series of shots that could ve made things interesting had they gone down. Harris scored 26 points, and Artis added 23 points, 13 rebounds and four steals. Quinton Campbell scored 24 points with 10 rebounds for Southern Miss, and Cortez Edwards added 17 points. UTEP 80, SOUTHERN MISS 50 (FEB. 11) Dominic Artis scored six of his 20 points during a 16-0 run early in the second half as UTEP thumped Southern Miss in the Don Haskins Center. The Miners made 12 three pointers led by Artis, who was 6-for-9 from long range. UTEP finished 12-for-23 from beyond the arc and shot 52.9 percent from the field on a night where Southern Miss game plan was to take the Miners inside game away. The Miners led at the half. Southern Miss cut it to nine (45-36) with 16:48 to play before UTEP went on the 16-0 run to take command. Artis had 10 assists and six rebounds. Omega Harris scored 17 points and Jake Flaggert hit three threes, the equalizer with Matt Willms and Paul Thomas combining for 13 points (four in the first half). MINERS IN THE NCAA STATS Dominic Artis was 17th in the nation in assists (5.9 apg), 19th in minutes (36.5 mpg) and 50th in steals (1.9 spg) through March 4. Omega Harris was 21st in minutes (36.3 mpg). THE TURNAROUND The Miners have won 12 of their last 15 games after starting the C-USA slate 0-3. Over the last 15 games, UTEP has allowed 63.4 ppg (951 points) with a defensive field goal percentage of.395 (332-for-840) and a defensive three-point field goal percentage of.293 (101-for-345). 3 ARTIS, HARRIS NAMED To All-CONFERENCE TEAM Dominic Artis was named second team All- Conference USA on Monday and junior guard Omega Harris was appointed third team All- League, based on a vote by head coaches and media. It marks the first time since 2014 that UTEP has had multiple All-Conference honorees. Vince Hunter and Julian Washburn were second team selections that year, and John Bohannon was third team. CLOSE CALLS UTEP is 5-7 in games decided by five points or less this season. The 12 games are the second-most under head coach Tim Floyd. In , the Miners played 13 games decided by five points or fewer. The seven losses by five points or less are the most for UTEP since (seven). In the Miners lost eight games by five points or less, a school-record total. C-USA NAILBITERS UTEP played eight C-USA games decided by five points or less this season, breaking the school record of six originally set by the team. The Miners had five C-USA wins by five points or less to tie the school standard. UTEP was 5-0 in C-USA games decided by five points or fewer during its league championship season. The Miners have faced double-digit second half deficits and won three times -- versus UAB (down 11), Middle Tennessee (down 17) and North Texas (down 10). The 17-point secondhalf comeback versus Middle Tennessee tied for UTEP s second-largest under Tim Floyd. DYNAMITE D The Miners have held 12 of their last 21 opponents to shooting percentages below 40. During that span their composite defensive field goal percentage is.399 (461-for-1,154). The Miners led C-USA in field goal percentage defense (.396) and three-point field goal percentage defense (.299) for league games only. UTEP was third in C-USA in scoring defense for league games only (64.2 ppg) behind Middle Tennessee (61.3 ppg) and Old Dominion (63.7 ppg). Throw out overtimes and the Miners yieded an average of 62.1 ppg in 18 C-USA contests. SHUTTING DOWN THE BREAK UTEP has allowed zero fast break points in eight of its last 13 contests (UTSA, Marshall, UAB, Middle Tennessee, LA Tech, Southern Miss, Rice, Charlotte). During that span the Miners have outscored opponents in fast break points. OFFENSE COMES ALIVE UTEP put 90 points on the board for the second time this season at FIU on Feb. 25. Both of the Miners 90-point games have come on the road; they scored 91 at Marshall on Jan. 28. This is the first UTEP team to score 90 points in two conference road games since the squad. That team scored 97 at Arizona State (2/11/56) and 90 at Texas Tech (2/27/56). Over the last seven games, the Miners have averaged 74.4 ppg with a collective.508 (187- for-368) field goal percentage and.436 (51-for- 117) three-point field goal percentage. ARTIS ALL-AROUND SEASON Dominic Artis leads the Miners in rebounding (6.3 rpg), assists (5.9 apg), steals (1.9 spg) and minutes (36.5 mpg), and ranks second in scoring (14.9 ppg). Eight players have led the Miners in assists and steals in a season, most recently Edgar Moreno in No player has led UTEP in assists, steals and rebounds. Artis has led the Miners in scoring seven times, rebounds 10 times, assists 24 times and steals 20 times in Artis has tied the school record for most games with 12+ assists in a season (three). Filiberto Rivera also compiled three such games during the season. With 178 assists, he has tied the eight-most in a season in school history. With 57 steals, he is tied for the eighth-most in a season. MORE ON D.A Dominic Artis has totals of 1,183 points, 467 rebounds, 493 assists and 160 steals in his college career ( at Oregon, 2015-present at UTEP). Artis is fifth in school history in assists (348). Artis has scored in double figures a teamleading 12 straight games; it ties his career long established earlier this season. Artis has come close to posting only the second triple-double in school history on several occasions, including four times this season. He had eight points/nine rebounds/13 assists in the opener against Louisiana College, 20 points/10 rebounds/nine assists versus Western Michigan, 18 points/nine rebounds/10 assists against FIU and 14 points/nine rebounds/ nine assists at WKU. The only triple-double in Miner history was registered by Jason Williams versus Lipscomb (17 points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists) in the NIT on March 14, DOMINIC S EXCLUSIVE CLUB Dominic Artis is the first player in school history to tally 400 points, 150 rebounds, 150 assists and 50 steals in a season. He is one of only four Conference USA players to achieve the feat. The others are Cincinnati s Kenny Satterfield ( ), UAB s Paul Delaney III ( ) and LA Tech s Alex Hamilton ( ). Artis became the second player in the country to reach those milestones in , after UCLA star Lonzo Ball. OMEGA IS THE ALPHA Omega Harris leads UTEP in scoring (16.8 ppg) and is tied with Dominic Artis for the team lead in double-figure scoring games (27). He had his 16-game double figure scoring streak, longest by a UTEP player in six years, snapped against Middle Tennessee on Feb. 4. He is tied for seventh in school history in three-point field goals (125) with Miguel Ayala. Chis Craig is in sixth place with 130 three-pointers. In the last five games, he is 10-for-17 from three-point range (.588). Harris became the 34th member of UTEP s 1,000-point club against Charlotte on Saturday. He has scored 1,003 points. Harris has scored 20+ points eight times this season, the highest total by a UTEP player since Randy Culpepper had 17 such performances in SECOND COMING 7 1 Matt Willms returned this season after missing most of with a fracture of the nevicular bone in his foot that required a similar surgery as fellow big men Joel Embiid and Greg Oden. It was the second major surgery of Willms career; he had surgery for a torn labrum in his shoulder in Willms is averaging 11.7 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1.1 blocks. He is ninth in school history in blocked shots (92).

5 Willms is trying to become the second UTEP player to lead Conference USA in field goal percentage (.601). The first was Cedrick Lang during the season (.620). THOMAS IMPROVEMENT Paul Thomas has been the Miners most improved player from the start of the season. Thomas is averaging 10.7 points and 7.1 rebounds in league games, shooting 57.7 percent from the field. Thomas has led UTEP in rebounding a teamleading 13 times this season. He has scored in double figures in 12 of the last 17 games. Thomas has six double-doubles in , second-most on the squad behind Dominic Artis eight. He has had 10+ rebounds on eight occasions to lead the team. JAKE DOES THE DIRTY WORK Jake Flaggert led Conference USA in charges drawn (18) last season, and is back at it in with a team-leading 31 in 30 games. Flaggert has 55 charges drawn in his Miner career (91 games). Four of Flaggert s five career double-figure scoring games have come this season, including a personal best 15 points against Northern Arizona (Dec. 17). Flaggert also had a UTEPhigh five three-point field goals versus the Lumberjacks. Flaggert is shooting 38.9 percent from threepoint land and 77.8 percent from the line. TREY S TIME Trey Touchet is playing the best basketball of his UTEP career and has scored in double figures in two of the last three games. He put 12 points on the board against FIU and Old Dominion, scoring in double figures in consecutive outings for the first time in his college career. In the last four games he has made 9-of-15 field goals (.600), 6-of-10 three pointers (.600 and 8-of-8 free throws. He is shooting 54.8 percent (17-for-31) from the field and 50 percent (11-for-22) from outside over the last nine games. JONES STORY UTEP s 6-11 freshman center Kelvin Jones has had an amazing road to El Paso. He grew up in Galeana, Chihuahua, Mexico, where his father was the mayor. He played soccer and volleyball. In 2011, after cartel violence claimed two relatives, the family left in the middle of the night and moved to Bismarck, North Dakota. Jones started playing basketball his freshman year in high school. He was 6-9 and the school didn t have a volleyball program. He finished his prep career at Hobbs [N.M.] High School, where he averaged 14.7 points, 9.9 rebounds and 3.2 blocks for a 30-2, state championship team. Jones put on 20 pounds in-between his junior and senior seasons. He walked on his first year at UTEP and sold pesticides door-to-door in Houston so he could have enough money to pay for his college tuition. THE FLOYD ERA UTEP has posted 136 wins under coach Tim Floyd, who is in his seventh season. The Miners have fashioned a mark of in Conference USA play under Floyd, with topthree finishes on four occasions (tied for second , third , tied for second , tied for third ). UTEP has registered double-digit C-USA victories in six of the seven years, including in each of the last five. MORE ON FLOYD Tim Floyd is in his seventh season on the UTEP bench with a career record of , including with the Miners. He has the most career wins among current C-USA coaches. Floyd ranks second in school history in victories behind the legendary Don Haskins (719) and has also coached the second-most games of any UTEP coach (229). Floyd has enjoyed 20 winning seasons in 22 years as a collegiate head coach. His teams have made eight NCAA Tournament appearances and five trips to the NIT. Floyd previously was the head coach at Idaho ( ), New Orleans ( ), Iowa State ( ) and USC ( ). He was also head coach of the Chicago Bulls ( ) and the New Orleans Hornets ( ) in the NBA. DEFENSE UNDER FLOYD UTEP has allowed less than 70 points 145 times under Tim Floyd (in 229 games), less than 60 points 78 times and less than 50 points on 18 occasions. Gilyard is a 5-9, 160-pound guard from Simeon Career Academy in Chicago, which has produced numerous NBA standouts including Milwaukee Bucks forward Jabari Parker and New York Knicks guard Derrick Rose. Gilyard is regarded as a three-star prospect by ESPN and the no. 13 player in Illinois. Magee is a 6-0, 140-pound guard from Brandeis High School in San Antonio. A starter since his freshman year, Magee has garnered All-District honors twice and has been a part of three 20-win teams. He was appointed to the Northside NISD and San Antonio ISD All-Tournament teams on a pair of occasions. Smith is a 6-8, 230-pound forward from Petal (Miss.) High School. Now in his third year as a varsity letterwinner, he was appointed to The Clarion-Ledger s Dandy Dozen as one of the 12 best players in the state of Mississippi for the campaign. Williams is a 6-7, 210-pound forward from Los Angeles, Calif. who is currently attending East Los Angeles College. He will have three years of eligibility with the Miners. Williams previously played at Price High School in L.A., where he was named the 2015 John R. Wooden High School Player of the Year for the CIF Los Angeles City Section (Division VI). The Miners fall recruiting class also includes guards Isiah Osborne and Trey Wade who are currently with the program and sitting out the campaign. The 6-5, 190-pound Osborne averaged 15.0 points at the University of Windsor last year. He was named the CIS (Canadian Interuniversity Sport) Rookie of the Year as well as the OUA (Ontario University Athletics) Rookie of the Year. The 6-5, 180-pound Wade hails from South Cobb High School in Austell, Ga.
