Floyd spent two seasons as a walk-on at Southern Miss before finishing his collegiate playing career at Louisiana Tech. He will be coaching against Southern Miss in Hattiesburg for the fifth time and is 0-4. On Jan. 23, 1989, Floyd s New Orleans squad dropped a decision to the Golden Eagles. He is 0-3 at UTEP with losses during the (64-51), (45-39) and (77-68) seasons. Last year the Miners were coached by Phil Johnson in a setback at Hattiesburg, although the loss went on Floyd s record. SADLER S UTEP TIES Southern Miss Head Coach Doc Sadler was the head coach at UTEP for two seasons ( ). He directed the Miners to a record with berths in the NCAA Tournament in 2005 and the NIT in Sadler led UTEP to the 2005 Western Athletic Conference tournament title. He was also an assistant at UTEP under coach Billy Gillispie during the season, when the Miners went 24-8 and made the first of back-to-back appearances in the Big Dance. Southern Miss Director of Basketball Operations, Chris Croft, was also on Sadler s UTEP staff. LAST GAME: FIU 79, UTEP 69 Lee Moore scored 12 of his 21 points during a 24-6 second-half run that almost brought UTEP all the way back from a 21-point deficit, but FIU held on for a win over the Miners on Jan. 23 at the Don Haskins Center. UTEP saw its 11-game homecourt winning streak in Conference USA play come to an end as FIU maintained its stranglehold on fourth place in the league standings. After the Miners went up 7-2 early, Adrian Diaz scored six of his 20 points in a 15-2 run that put FIU ahead 17-9 and left UTEP playing catch-up the rest of the night. UTEP trailed at the half and with 10:43 to go but came roaring back. Moore and Earvin Morris combined for 19 points during the 24-6 spurt. Moore s free throws with 2:48 on the clock made it a one-possession game (70-67). FIU s Eric Nottage answered with a three-pointer his only field goal of the night to double the lead. That started a string of six consecutive points by the Panthers that left UTEP down with time running out. FIU outscored UTEP in the paint and in points off turnovers. The game will be nationally televised on FOX Sports 1 with a tip-off time of 3 p.m. Mountain. The significance of Western Kentucky as the opponent for the anniversary game is great, as the Hilltoppers also participated in the 1966 NCAA Tournament and started two African American players, including Clem Haskins who was selected third in the 1967 NBA Draft. Haskins and Dwight Smith became the first African- American players to join the WKU basketball program in the fall of 1963, putting the school at the forefront of integrating college basketball in the South. The UTEP-Western Kentucky game is just one of a series of special events in the works to salute the national champs. CBS Sports is partnering with UTEP to produce an anniversary special at Memorial Gym, and the NCAA will be honoring the squad at the Final Four in Houston this March. For updates on UTEP s plans to honor the Miners, visit gloryroad.utep.edu. COMING UP The Miners will play at LA Tech on Sunday at 2 p.m. MT.
