UTEP (7-14, 5-4 C-USA) has won five of its last six games to rise to sixth place in the league standings. Middle Tennessee (20-3, 10-0 C- USA) has been at the top from the very beginning and is riding a 10-game win streak, ninthlongest in the country. The game will be nationally televised on the American Sports Network. UTEP players will be wearing Mineros jerseys for Noche Latina. UTEP is 4-0 in C-USA home games this season, and in C-USA home games under coach Tim Floyd. UTEP is one of three teams still unbeaten at home in league play this season, along with Middle Tennessee (5-0) and UAB (4-0). The Miners are overall in C-USA home games. UTEP has won 20 of its last 21 league home games dating back to the season. ABOUT MIDDLE TENNESSEE The Blue Raiders have parlayed last year s NCAA Tournament bid and stunning upset of no. 2 seed Michigan State into a stellar season. Middle Tennessee is atop the C-USA standings with a perfect 10-0 mark, 20-3 overall and riding a 10-game win streak. The Blue Raiders have two of the league s top returning players in junior guard Giddy Potts (15.6 ppg) and senior forward Reggie Upshaw (14.5 ppg), but their top scorer to date has been transfer JaCorey Williams (17.3 ppg). The Arkansas import is in his lone year of eligibility with Middle Tennessee and is shooting 52.2 percent from the floor while also averaging 7.5 rebounds. Middle Tennessee is tops in C-USA in field goal percentage (.487), steals (7.2 spg), turnover margin (+3.4) and assist/turnover ratio (1.5). SERIES HISTORY UTEP and Middle Tennessee have split four previous meetings. The Miners made 12-of-16 three pointers in topping the Blue Raiders, 83-70, in the only matchup between the teams at the Haskins Center on Jan. 31, THE LAST MEETING Darnell Harris scored 21 points, including a crucial layup with 1:24 remaining, as Middle Tennessee made plays down the stretch and slipped past UTEP, 78-72, on Jan. 7, 2016 in Murfreesboro. Harris bucket put the Blue Raiders up after Earvin Morris missed a three-pointer that could ve given the Miners the lead. UTEP again pulled within two (74-72) on two free throws by Lee Moore with 26 seconds remaining, but Giddy Potts found Reggie Upshaw for a layup to break the Miner press. After Omega Harris missed a three-pointer, the Blue Raiders Perrin Buford closed it out with free throws. Moore scored 20 points, and Terry Winn posted 16 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. The Blue Raiders made their first four threepoint attempts, and six of their first nine, to bolt to a lead midway through the first half. Trailing by 10 (30-20), the Miners closed the half with a 14-7 run to get within three (37-34). Moore connected on a three-pointer with three seconds left to make it a one possession game. UTEP led twice in the second half, at (17:23 mark) and (15:02 mark). Middle Tennessee scored the next six points. The Blue Raiders went ahead by nine points (70-61) with 7:45 remaining after completing an 8-2 run. They were up by eight (72-64) with under five minutes to go before UTEP mounted one last rally. Moore scored the next six points to make it a two-point game before Harris and Upshaw came through in the clutch. The Miners were outrebounded (25-20 in the second half) and yielded 12 secondchance points, six in each half. Middle Tennessee made four more threepointers (nine to five), but UTEP finished 21-for- 26 at the line to the home team s 11-for-19. THE DAVIS/FLOYD CONNECTION UTEP s Tim Floyd and Middle Tennessee s Kermit Davis were on the same coaching staff at Idaho for two seasons ( ). Floyd was the head coach and Davis was an assistant at the time. The Vandals went and were runner-up in the Big Sky Conference in while finishing When Floyd left to take the New Orleans job for the season, Davis took over as head coach and orchestrated back-to-back 25-6 campaigns. Idaho appeared in the NCAA Tournament in both 1989 and 1990 under Davis, losing a first-round game each time. LAST GAME: UTEP 63, UAB 59 Omega Harris scored 19 of his 23 points in the second half as UTEP rallied from an 11-point deficit and beat UAB, 63-59, on Thursday at the Haskins Center. UTEP shot 31.8 percent in the first half but found its offensive groove over the final 20 minutes, shooting 57.7 percent and outscoring UAB After getting dominated on the boards in the first half, the Miners posted a slim rebounding advantage (16-15) after halftime. They also committed just three turnovers in the second half. A 21-6 run in the second half turned a deficit into a lead. Harris scored eight points in the run, and Dominic Artis finished it off with a three-pointer and a layup off his own steal. The Miners scored eight points off eight UAB turnovers in the second half, and Artis registered four of his career-high tying five steals after halftime. The Blazers cut a 10-point UTEP lead (56-46) down to three on three separate occasions over the last two minutes, but the Miners made just enough timely buckets down the stretch to finish them off. Harris was 7-for-10 from the field and 4-for-4 from the line in the second half. Artis collected 11 points, five rebounds and eight assists. Matt Willms had 14 points, eight rebounds and three blocks. The Miners shot 45.8 percent with only 10 turnovers. UAB shot 39.3 percent and outrebounded UTEP Both teams struggled at the line with UTEP finishing 15-for-25 and UAB 9-for-18. The Miners were much better at the stripe in the second half (11-for-15). MINERS IN THE NCAA STATS Dominic Artis was 12th in the nation in assists (6.2 apg) and 14th in minutes (36.5 mpg) through Feb. 2. Omega Harris was 20th in minutes (36.2 mpg). WILLMS IS C-USA POW Matt Willms picked up his first Conference USA Player of the Week honor on Monday. Willms averaged 26.0 points in two games last week and made 24-of-31 shots (77.4 percent). First, he scored a career-high 27 points in the Miners loss at WKU on Jan. 26. Willms made 13-of-16 shots (81.3 percent) in that contest. He established career-highs for field goals made (13), field goals attempted (16) and minutes (35) while adding four rebounds, a block and two steals. The 27 points were the most by a UTEP big man since John Tofi scored 30 at Southern Miss on Feb. 11, It also marked the most points by a UTEP player this season. Willms followed that up with a 25-point, seven-rebound performance at Marshall on Jan. 28. He shot 11-for-15 (.733) from the field and added three assists and a steal over 29 minutes. It marks the second time Willms has been recognized by C-USA. He was named the league s Freshman of the Week on Nov. 11, 2013 after producing 20 points, eight rebounds, four blocks and three steals in his first collegiate game against Loyola (New Orleans).

3 TURNING IT AROUND The Miners have won five of their last six games after starting the C-USA slate 0-3. Here is a comparison of UTEP s stats in the last six league games, compared to the first three. Over the last six games, UTEP has four players averaging at least 10 points per game -- Harris (17.5 ppg), Matt Willms (15.8 ppg), Artis (14.5 ppg) and Paul Thomas (10.2 ppg). Two Miners scored in double figures in each of the first three league games. UTEP has had at least three double figure scorers in every game since, with four players in double figures in three of six contests. Thomas has a team-leading 24 free throw attempts over the last six games. In the first three C-USA games, he went to the line a total of four times. DOMINATING THE PAINT Over the last six games, UTEP has outscored opponents in the paint with at least 40 points on four occasions. UTEP s 60 points in the paint at Marshall matched its most in a game under Tim Floyd. The Miners also scored 60 in the paint in a double-overtime contest against Colorado State on Nov. 28, SHUTTING DOWN THE BREAK UTEP has allowed zero fast break points in three of its last four contests (UTSA, Marshall, UAB). During that span the Miners have outscored opponents 38-3 in fast break points. UTEP scored a season-high 20 fast break points at WKU on Jan. 26. MINERS BRING BACK THE D The Miners have held nine of their last 12 opponents to shooting percentages below 38. During that span their composite defensive field goal percentage is.384 (256-for-666). The Miners lead C-USA in field goal percentage defense (.374) and three-point field goal percentage defense (.258) for league games only, and by a wide margin. Throw out overtimes and the Miners have yieded an average of 61.8 ppg in nine C-USA contests. UTEP had a rebound margin of -2.1 per game in non-conference games. UTEP leads C-USA in defensive rebounds per game (31.0) and defensive rebound percentage (.779) for league games. UTEP is 5-4 this season when outrebounding opponents and 2-10 when tied or outrebounded (includes Thursday s win over UAB where the Blazers won the battle of the boards 39-32). SHOOTING GALLERY The Miners are 7-4 when shooting a higher percentage than their opponent in , and 0-10 when shooting an equal or lesser percentage. UTEP has outshot its opponent in six consecutive games for the first time since the first six games of the season. During that span the Miners field goal percentage is.484 ( ) and opponents is.361 (127-for-352). UTEP is third in C-USA in field goal percentage for league games only (.460) behind Middle Tennessee (.491) and UAB (.477). MINERS COME FROM BEHIND For the second time this season, the Miners won when trailing at the half (2-12) when they beat UAB on Thursday. UTEP was also down at the midway point of an 88-87, double overtime triumph over FIU on Jan. 12. The Miners have won 22 times in seven seasons under Tim Floyd when trailing at the intermission. TALKING TURNOVERS UTEP has compiled 13 turnovers or less in five of its last six games, something it did five times in the first 15 games of the season. Over the last six games, the Miners have outscored opponents in points off turnovers. In the first 15 games they were outscored ARTIS ALL-AROUND SEASON Dominic Artis leads the Miners in rebounding (6.6 rpg), assists (6.2 apg), steals (2.0 spg) and minutes (36.5 mpg), and ranks second in scoring (15.0 ppg). Eight players have led the Miners in assists and steals in a season, most recently Edgar Moreno in No player has led UTEP in assists, steals and rebounds. Artis has led the Miners in scoring five times, rebounds seven times, assists 18 times and steals 16 times in Artis has tied the school record for most games with 12+ assists in a season (three). Filiberto Rivera also compiled three such games during the season. Artis is on pace to become the first Miner to tally 400 points, 150 rebounds, 150 assists and 50 steals in a season. MORE ON D.A Dominic Artis has totals of 1,049 points, 416 rebounds, 446 assists and 146 steals in his college career ( at Oregon, 2015-present at UTEP). Artis is tied for eighth place in school history in assists (311) with Jacques Streeter. Jeep Jackson is in seventh place with 313 assists. Artis has come close to posting only the second triple-double in school history on several occasions, including four times this season. He had eight points/nine rebounds/13 assists in the opener against Louisiana College, 20 points/10 rebounds/nine assists versus Western Michigan, 18 points/nine rebounds/10 assists against FIU and 14 points/nine rebounds/ nine assists at WKU. The only triple-double in Miner history was registered by Jason Williams versus Lipscomb (17 points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists) in the NIT on March 14, OMEGA IS THE ALPHA Omega Harris leads UTEP in scoring (17.5 ppg) and is averaging 18.4 ppg in C-USA play (fourth in the league). He is tied for 10th in school history in threepoint field goals (112) with Christian Polk. Rico Nelson and Julian Washburn are tied for eighth place with 119 three-pointers. He is a career.389 (112-for-288) three-point shooter. Harris has scored 20+ points seven times this season, matching the total of the team leader the last two years (Vince Hunter in , Lee Moore in ). The last UTEP player to compile more than seven 20-point games in a season was Randy Culpepper in (17). Harris has scored in double figures in 16 straight games, the longest streak by a Miner player since Randy Culpepper (20 games) in SECOND COMING 7 1 Matt Willms returned this season after missing most of with a fracture of the nevicular bone in his foot that required a similar surgery as fellow big men Joel Embiid and Greg Oden. It was the second major surgery of Willms career; he had surgery for a torn labrum in his shoulder in Willms is averaging 11.7 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1.1 blocks. Over the last three games Willms has averaged 22 points while shooting 69.8 percent (30-for-43) from the field. He is 10th in school history in blocked shots (81). THOMAS IMPROVES Paul Thomas has been the Miners most improved player from the start of the season to now. Thomas is averaging 9.4 points and 6.4 rebounds in league games, shooting 57.1 percent from the field (tied for sixth in C-USA). Thomas, who had a difficult time staying on the court due to foul trouble early in the season, has averaged 30.0 minutes in conference play. He averaged 19.2 minutes in non-conference action.

5 He has scored in double figures in five of the last eight games, collecting 9.8 ppg during that span with a.589 (33-for-56) field goal percentage. JAKE DOES THE DIRTY WORK Jake Flaggert led Conference USA in charges drawn (18) last season, and is back at it in with a team-leading 17 in 21 games. Flaggert has 41 charges drawn in his Miner career (82 games). Four of Flaggert s five career double-figure scoring games have come early this season, including a personal best 15 points against Northern Arizona (Dec. 17). Flaggert also had a UTEP-high five three-point field goals versus the Lumberjacks. Flaggert is shooting 38.5 percent from threepoint land and 76 percent from the line. JONES STORY UTEP s 6-11 freshman center Kelvin Jones has had an amazing road to El Paso. He grew up in Galeana, Chihuahua, Mexico, where his father was the mayor. He played soccer and volleyball. In 2011, after cartel violence claimed two relatives, the family left in the middle of the night and moved to Bismarck, North Dakota. Jones started playing basketball his freshman year in high school. He was 6-9 and the school didn t have a volleyball program. He finished his prep career at Hobbs [N.M.] High School, where he averaged 14.7 points, 9.9 rebounds and 3.2 blocks for a 30-2, state championship team. Jones put on 20 pounds in-between his junior and senior seasons. He walked on his first year at UTEP and sold pesticides door-to-door in Houston so he could have enough money to pay for his college tuition. THE FLOYD ERA UTEP has posted 129 wins under coach Tim Floyd, who is in his seventh season. The Miners have fashioned a mark of in Conference USA play under Floyd, with topthree finishes on three occasions (tied for second , third , tied for second ). UTEP has registered double-digit C- USA victories in five of the six years, including in each of the last four. MORE ON FLOYD Tim Floyd is in his seventh season on the UTEP bench with a career record of , including with the Miners. He has the most career wins among current C-USA coaches. Floyd ranks second in school history in victories behind the legendary Don Haskins (719) and has also coached the second-most games of any UTEP coach (220). Floyd has enjoyed 20 winning seasons in 22 years as a collegiate head coach. His teams have made eight NCAA Tournament appearances and five trips to the NIT. Floyd previously was the head coach at Idaho ( ), New Orleans ( ), Iowa State ( ) and USC ( ). He was also head coach of the Chicago Bulls ( ) and the New Orleans Hornets ( ) in the NBA. DEFENSE UNDER FLOYD UTEP has allowed less than 70 points 139 times under Tim Floyd (in 220 games), less than 60 points 75 times and less than 50 points on 18 occasions. Gilyard is a 5-9, 160-pound guard from Simeon Career Academy in Chicago, which has produced numerous NBA standouts including Milwaukee Bucks forward Jabari Parker and New York Knicks guard Derrick Rose. Gilyard is regarded as a three-star prospect by ESPN and the no. 13 player in Illinois. He averaged 13.5 points and 3.2 assists last season while shooting 49 percent from three-point range. He was second team All-City, two-time All-Conference and honorable mention All-State. He scored 14 points in the fourth quarter of the city championship game as Simeon beat Kenwood Gilyard, who has led Simeon Career Academy to a 96-7 record, continued to turn heads on the AAU circuit this summer while playing for the Meanstreets 16- and 17-under teams. Magee is a 6-0, 140-pound guard from Brandeis High School in San Antonio. He averaged 17.9 points as a junior with 79 threepointers, helping Brandeis to a 31-2 mark and a top-10 state ranking. He has scored 1,281 points in 89 prep games (14.4 ppg) with 147 three-point field goals and owns a career.421 percentage from beyond the arc. A starter since his freshman year, Magee has garnered All-District honors twice and has been a part of three 20-win teams. He was appointed to the Northside NISD and San Antonio ISD All-Tournament teams on a pair of occasions. Smith is a 6-8, 230-pound forward from Petal (Miss.) High School. Now in his third year as a varsity letterwinner, he was appointed to The Clarion-Ledger s Dandy Dozen as one of the 12 best players in the state of Mississippi for the campaign. He averaged 16 points, 11 rebounds and 2.5 blocks last season. Smith participated in the MAC/Mississippi Sports Medicine All-Star Classic as a member of the South team in March. Smith also played for the Elfrid Payton Elite AAU team. Williams is a 6-7, 210-pound forward from Los Angeles, Calif. who is currently attending East Los Angeles College. He will have three years of eligibility with the Miners. Williams previously played at Price High School in L.A., where he was named the 2015 John R. Wooden High School Player of the Year for the CIF Los Angeles City Section (Division VI). He led Price in scoring in back-to-back years and to the semifinals at the 2015 California state playoffs. Regarded as a three-star recruit by ESPN.com and the no. 19 player in California, Williams averaged 16 points and seven rebounds as a prep senior. He was first team All-CIF. The Miners fall recruiting class also includes guards Isiah Osborne and Trey Wade who are currently with the program and sitting out the campaign. The 6-5, 190-pound Osborne averaged 15.0 points at the University of Windsor last year. He was named the CIS (Canadian Interuniversity Sport) Rookie of the Year as well as the OUA (Ontario University Athletics) Rookie of the Year. The 6-5, 180-pound Wade hails from South Cobb High School in Austell, Ga. He averaged 19.1 points and 7.5 rebounds as a senior in LOOKING AHEAD UTEP will take on LA Tech (Thursday, Feb. 9) and Southern Miss (Saturday, Feb. 11) next week in the Haskins Center. The LA Tech game is Military Appreciation Night and the Southern Miss game will feature a halftime performance by the Air Elite Dunk Team. Tip-off for both games is 7 p.m. The Miners will embark on a four-game road swing from Feb prior to wrapping up the regular season with home games versus Old Dominion (March 2) and Charlotte (March 4).
