1 GAME NOTES MINERS vs. COLORADO STATE / NOV. 28, 2015 / 3 PM / AMERICAN BANK CENTER OPENING TIP (5-0) meets Colorado State (5-0) in the championship game of the Corpus Christi Coastal Classic on Saturday afternoon at the American Bank Center. The game will be televised on the American Sports Network and can be seen on KFOX-TV in El Paso. is seeking its first championship of an in-season tournament outside of its own Sun Bowl Invitational since December of 1984, when it won the Saluki Shootout in Carbondale, Ill. with victories over Western Illinois and Southern Illinois. The tournament is in its third year. Past champions include Virginia in 2013 and TCU in is 5-0 for the first time since the season and only the fourth time since The last time the Miners were 6-0 was in This is coach Tim Floyd s first 5-0 squad since the Iowa State Cyclones that won their first 10 games. ABOUT COLORADO STATE The Rams advanced to the championship game by topping Portland, 90-74, on Friday night. Senior guard Gian Clavell matched his career-high with 21 points for CSU, which led by as many as 28 points. Colorado State is averaging 92 points per game while shooting 48.5 percent from the field, 40.5 percent from downtown and 79.3 percent from the line. CSU has scored 80+ points in every game and 90 or more in the last three contests. The Rams have six players with double figure scoring averages -- Clavell (18.8 ppg), senior guard Antwan Scott (16.0 ppg), junior guard John Gillon (14.4 ppg), senior guard Joe De Ciman (12.8 ppg), junior forward Emmanuel Omogbo (12.0 ppg) and senior forward Tiel Daniels (10.2 ppg). Four Rams are averaging at least six rebounds per outing -- Clavell (7.0 rpg), sophomore forward Kimani Jackson (7.0 rpg in one game), Omogbo (6.2 rpg) and Daniels (6.0 rpg). Colorado State has made more free throws (115) than its opponents have attempted (87). The Rams average 29.0 free throw attempts per contest. SERIES NOTES This is the 73rd meeting between the schools with leading the series Colorado State has won eight of the last nine matchups between the long-time rivals. This is the first meeting on a neutral floor since March 11, 1993 in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament at Salt Lake City. The Miners won that game is 4-0 all-time versus Colorado State on neutral courts. LAST GAME 71, SIU 66 Hooper Vint and Terry Winn established career-highs with 18 and 15 points respectively, leading to a victory over Southern Illinois Friday. The Miners survived on a day when Dominic Artis was in foul trouble, played only 20 minutes and had no assists. They held Saluki star Anthony Beane to nine points, 14 below his season average, on 4-for-12 shooting. The first half featured five ties and eight lead changes. Jake Flaggert gave the Miners a bit of breathing room when he nailed a three-pointer right before the buzzer sounded. That sent to the locker room leading The Miners built a nine-point lead (56-47), their largest of the game, with under 10 minutes remaining but couldn t shake the Salukis. Southern Illinois went on a 12-2 run and regained the lead, 64-62, on a layup by Sean O Brien with 3:02 to play. O Brien had game-highs with 25 points and 11 rebounds. After Lee Moore split two free throws, O Brien scored again at the 2:23 mark to increase the Salukis advantage to three (66-63). That turned out to be Southern Illinois final points of the game as the Miners pitched a shutout the rest of the way. Winn scored the next four points off a layup and two free throws to push back ahead The Salukis scored on the other end to apparently go up 68-67, but following an official review it was determined that the basket came after the shot clock ran out. Earvin Morris scored with 42 seconds left for a lead and, after SIU s Austin Weiher missed a three, Vint closed it out on two free throws with 18 seconds remaining. Jake Flaggert has seven charges drawn in five games. Flaggert has made 8-of-13 three pointers to top the team in percentage (.615). Thirteen of his 14 shot attempts have come from long range. In the last four games, Flaggert is 7-for-10 from beyond the arc (70 percent). Terry Winn has scored in double figures in back-to-back games for the first time in his college career. He has gone to the line 10 times in each of the last two contests, and averages 7.0 attempts per game for the season. Winn registered his first career double-double -- and the first by a player this season -- with 10 rebounds against Southern Illinois. Trey Touchet has committed one turnover in 62 minutes of playing time this season, with eight assists. With a victory over Colorado State, the Miners would complete their first unbeaten November since 2009 (4-0), and they would post six victories in the month for the first time ever.
