The Miners tipped the Sooners, 89-74, in the All College Classic on Dec. 21, 2009 in Oklahoma City. UTEP and Oklahoma also met twice during the 1960 s in Norman. The Sooners beat the Miners on Dec. 2, 1959, and on Dec. 1, Harold Davis was coach of the Miners at the time - a year before the legendary Don Haskins arrival in El Paso for the season. THE LAST MEETING Randy Culpepper scored 17 of his 27 points in the second half as UTEP built a big lead before holding off Oklahoma, 89-74, at the All-College Classic on Dec. 21, 2009 in Oklahoma City. The Miners tied their largest lead of the night of 19 points, 60-41, on a three-pointer by Culpepper with 13:51 to play. The Sooners, who had their six-game winning streak snapped, pulled within 10 points twice at and 79-69, but could get no closer. All five starters scored in double figures for UTEP - Culpepper, Christian Polk (17 points), Julyan Stone (15), Derrick Caracter (11) and Arnett Moultrie (10). Caracter added 10 boards as the Miners outrebounded the Sooners UTEP shot 57.9 percent from the field and made 10-of-16 three-point shots. Oklahoma was led by Willie Warren, who poured in 26 points. Tommy Mason-Griffin scored all 20 of his points in the second half, when he was 7-for-11 from the field. FLOYD VS. OKLAHOMA UTEP Coach Tim Floyd and Oklahoma coach Lon Kruger will match wits for the second time on Thursday. On March 17, 1995, Floyd s Iowa State Cyclones topped Kruger s Florida Gators, 64-61, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Floyd is 4-5 in his college coaching career against Oklahoma. On Nov. 14, 1990, Floyd s New Orleans Privateers dropped a decision at Oklahoma in the preseason NIT. He was 3-3 versus the Sooners in four seasons ( ) as the head coach at Iowa State. Floyd was 1-1 against OU at USC ( ). The Trojans won the first game of the home-andhome series in Los Angeles, 66-55, on Nov. 29, The Sooners avenged the defeat with a victory in Norman on Dec. 4, UTEP FALLS TO 1-1 WITH LOSS AT NO. 12 ARIZONA The Miners were outscored 15-2 over the final 8:07 in a defeat at no. 12 Arizona last Thursday (Nov. 15). UTEP trailed with under eight minutes remaining, but didn t score again until 1:22 to play when Jacques Streeter hit a jumper, ending a 13-0 run by the Wildcats. Arizona shot 8-for-13 from three-point range in the first half, then beat the Miners inside over the final 20 minutes with 16 points in the paint. Mark Lyons led Arizona with 17 points. Solomon Hill added 10 points and six Wildcats scored between six and nine points. UTEP was outrebounded The 15 rebounds were the fewest by a Miner team since Feb. 17, 1979, when they also had 15 in a loss to Wyoming. Chris and Julian Washburn led UTEP with 11 points apiece, and Streeter scored 10. John Bohannon totaled zero points and a rebound in 21 minutes. It ended a string of 26 straight games that he scored. OBSERVATIONS FROM THE FIRST TWO GAMES The Miners have alternated 20-point wins and losses to start a season for the first time ever. The last time UTEP followed a 20-point win with a 20-point loss (or vice versa) was during the season (89-68 loss at no. 23 BYU, victory over Western New Mexico). UTEP did not lead against Arizona for just the third time in 69 games since Tim Floyd took the helm of the program for the season. The other such occurrences came at UCF and SMU late last season. Chris Washburn is the first UTEP player to score in double figures off the bench in consecutive games to open a season since Jeremy Williams did so versus Texas Southern (18 points) and Arkansas-Pine Bluff (12 points) in The last UTEP reserve to tip-off a season with three double-figure scoring games was Brian Stewart in (12 versus Arkansas-Monticello, 10 against Northwestern State, 16 versus TCU). Stewart was inserted into the starting lineup for the fourth game. While admittedly it s very early, Chris Washburn leads the Miners in scoring (12.5 ppg). Only two freshmen have led UTEP in scoring in a season, Earl Fuller in (10.5 ppg) and Giovanni St. Amant in (13.6 ppg). UTEP has gotten at least 20 points from its bench in each of the first two contests. This only happened 10 times all of last season and only three times consecutively. For the second straight year, the Miners were held under 70 points in each of their first two games. They haven t opened a season with three sub-70 point contests since

3 UTEP has scored 20+ points off turnovers in two straight games for the first time since December of 2010 (25 at BYU, 25 versus Western New Mexico), and for the third time under coach Tim Floyd. The last time the Miners did it in three consecutive contests was a six-game streak to open the season. TOP-25 PROSPECT HEADLINES 2013 RECRUITING CLASS UTEP has announced three signees for 2013, with more expected in the coming days. Josh Flaggert (6-6 forward/guard, Lovejoy, Texas), Isaac Hamilton (6-5 guard, Los Angeles, Calif.) and Andre Spight (6-3 guard, Pasadena, Calif.) have all signed national letters of intent to play for the Miners next season. Flaggert possesses a 35-inch vertical and averaged 10 points last season at Lovejoy High School. Hamilton is unanimously regarded as one of the nation s top-25 prep prospects. He is rated a five-star recruit and the no. 16 player in the country by Rivals, a five-star recruit by Scout.com and the no. 25 player in the ESPNU Top-100. Hamilton averaged 24.3 ppg, 9.6 rpg, 5.4 apg and 2.2 spg last season at St. John Bosco High School in Bellflower, Calif. He is the younger brother of the Denver Nuggets Jordan Hamilton and the nephew of former Miner Kevin Hamilton ( ). Spight averaged 22 points last season at Burbank High School and was rated the top threepoint shooter in Southern California by numerous media outlets. MINERS OPEN SEASON WITH 20-POINT WIN UTEP improved to 47-5 in its last 52 season openers with a rout of Oral Roberts on Nov. 9 at the Don Haskins Center. The Miners turned a deficit into a lead with a 26-5 run in the second half. Freshman forward Chris Washburn scored 11 of his 14 points during the spurt. He had four dunks in the second half. The Miners shot 51.4 percent from the field over the final 20 minutes while limiting ORU to 26.9 percent shooting. UTEP turned the ball over just seven times while forcing 20 Golden Eagle turnovers in each half. Joining Washburn in double-figure scoring were John Bohannon (17 points), Julian Washburn (11) and Jalen Ragland (10). Ragland s point total was a career-high. Oral Roberts was 27-7 last season and is the preseason favorite in the Southland Conference. OBSERVATIONS FROM THE ORU VICTORY Chris Washburn became the first UTEP freshman to score in double figures in an opener since Stefon Jackson versus Western New Mexico on Nov. 18, 2005 (12 points). The last time UTEP opened a season with four double-figure scorers was on Nov. 13, 2009 against Texas Southern. The Miners had decisive advantages in points off turnovers (22-6), points in the paint (40-16), fast break points (18-8) and bench scoring (22-0). UTEP S RECORD WHEN Season...
