OPENING TIP UTEP (6-3) matches up with Arizona (11-0) on Friday at 9 p.m. MT in the Don Haskins Center before a national television (FOX Sports 1) audience. The game is sold out. This is the 113th sellout in the history of the Haskins Center (12,000 capacity), and the first sellout since Tim Floyd s initial game as head coach versus Pacific on Nov. 12, The Wildcats are ranked third in this week s Associated Press and USA Today Coaches polls. The Wildcats are the highest-ranked team ever to face UTEP in El Paso. The Miners have taken on the nation s fourth-ranked squad three times in the Sun City Arizona State (Jan. 5, 1963), Iowa (Dec. 30, 1965) and Utah (Jan. 30, 1997). The Miners are all-time versus ranked teams, including at home and in the Haskins Center. UTEP has lost 20 of its last 21 games to ranked teams, including seven in a row, and five in a row at the DHC since upsetting no. 20 Fresno State, 80-61, on Feb. 17, The Miners last victory over a ranked team was a 74-65, double overtime triumph at no. 25 UAB on Jan. 30, UTEP is 21-3 in December home games under Tim Floyd. The Miners are seeking their first 5-0 home start since when they won their first six home games. MINER LEGENDS Friday s Miner Legend who will be honored at halftime is Ralph Davis ( ). Davis was a member of UTEP s NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 team that beat top-seeded Kansas in the second round. A 6-6 forward from Chicago, he played in 122 games for the Miners, averaging 10.8 points, 5.2 rebounds, 1.1 assists, 0.9 blocks and 0.8 steals. He was UTEP s second-leading scorer as a junior in (14.9 ppg) and as a senior in (16.7 ppg). Davis scored 12 points off the bench in the win over the Jayhawks, sinking 5-of-8 shots, with seven rebounds in 21 minutes. Davis was a member of Team USA at the 1992 National Junior Olympics. He played professionally in Europe for several years following his career at UTEP. ABOUT ARIZONA Freshman forward Stanley Johnson scored 18 points to lead five Wildcats in double figures, and Arizona crushed Oakland on the boards (50-22) in a victory on Tuesday in Tucson. Johnson leads the Wildcats in scoring (14.5 ppg), while sophomore forward Rondae Hollis- Jefferson is averaging 12.5 ppg and junior forward Brandon Ashley is averaging 11.7 ppg. Arizona has an experienced floor general in senior T.J. McConnell, who has dished out 67 assists with 20 turnovers. He had 10 assists and no turnovers in 26 minutes versus Oakland on Tuesday. McConnell is 14th in the country in assists (6.1 avg.) and 27th in assist/turnover ratio (3.35). Through the games of Dec. 16, Arizona held national top-25 rankings in field goal percentage (eighth,.511), scoring margin (14th, ppg), rebound margin (18th, +9.1 rpg) and scoring offense (25th, 78.6 ppg). The Wildcats will be playing their first road game of the season against the Miners. Arizona has played three neutral site games, topping Missouri (72-53), Kansas State (72-68) and San Diego State (61-59) to win the Maui Invitational Nov Arizona was 8-3 on the road last season. Arizona has been to the NCAA Tournament 31 times. Arizona has made the Sweet 16 sixteen times (including in each of the last two years), the Elite Eight 10 times, the Final Four on four occasions and won the 1997 national title. SERIES NOTES Arizona leads the series The Wildcats hold a edge in games played in El Paso, including 2-1 at the Haskins Center. The Miners and the Wildcats are meeting in the Sun City for the first time since Dec. 17, The current two-game set started with a Wildcat win on Nov. 15, 2012 in Tucson. UTEP beat Arizona on Dec. 28, 1983, in overtime, to claim the championship of the Sun Carnival Classic Tournament in El Paso. The Miners also knocked off the Wildcats, in overtime, in Tucson to advance to the second round of the 1987 NCAA Tournament. The meetings have been scarce since, with Arizona pulling out victories during the (75-61), (90-70) and seasons. The last time UTEP and Arizona met in El Paso, the Haskins Center was named the Special Events Center, and Joseph Blair & Damon Stoudamire played for the Wildcats. Both are currently on the Arizona staff. UTEP and Arizona were joint members of the Western Athletic Conference from The Miners played the Wildcats at least once annually in 40 of the 43 seasons that they fielded a team from THE LAST MEETING The Miners were outscored 15-2 over the final 8:07 in a defeat at no. 12 Arizona on Nov. 15, UTEP trailed with less than eight minutes remaining, but didn t score again until 1:22 to play when Jacques Streeter hit a jumper, ending a 13-0 run by the Wildcats. Arizona shot 8-for-13 from three-point range in the first half, then beat the Miners inside over the final 20 minutes with 16 points in the paint. Mark Lyons led Arizona with 17 points. UTEP was outrebounded The 15 rebounds were the fewest by a Miner team since Feb. 17, 1979, when they also had 15 in a loss to Wyoming. Chris and Julian Washburn led UTEP with 11 points apiece, and Streeter scored 10. CONNECTIONS UTEP assistant Phil Johnson was on the Arizona bench from In five seasons, Johnson helped the Wildcats to a record, the 1997 national title and five NCAA Tournament berths. He worked specifically with the post players at UA, including NBA picks Joseph Blair (currently a graduate manager with the Wildcats), A.J. Bramlett, Ben Davis, Bennett Davison and Ray Owes. Like Tim Floyd, Arizona assistant Joe Pasternack is the former head coach at New Orleans ( ). Arizona senior forward Matt Korcheck originally signed a national letter of intent to play at UTEP in November of 2009 before going the junior college route and ultimately winding up in Tucson. Arizona junior forward Brandon Ashley was a teammate of UTEP sophomore center Matt Willms at Findlay Prep. COACH TIM FLOYD Tim Floyd is in his 21st season as a collegiate head coach. Floyd has posted a mark during stints at Idaho ( ), New Orleans ( ), Iowa State ( ), USC ( ) and UTEP (2010-present). His UTEP record is in his fifth season. Floyd is second in school history in wins. Hall of Famer and Floyd mentor Don Haskins has 719. Floyd was also head coach of the Chicago Bulls ( ) and the New Orleans Hornets ( ) in the NBA. Floyd has enjoyed 18 winning seasons in 20 years as a collegiate head coach. His teams have made eight NCAA Tournament appearances and four trips to the NIT. Only Haskins (1,073 games) and Marshall Pennington (146) have coached more games at UTEP than Floyd (142). Floyd has three former Division I head coaches on his staff in Phil Johnson (San Jose State), Bob Cantu (USC) and Bobby Braswell (Cal State Northridge).

3 FLOYD VERSUS ARIZONA UTEP s Tim Floyd is 5-7 in his college coaching career against Arizona. He was 0-3 versus UA as the head coach at New Orleans ( ) with losses during the (82-64), (72-69) and (80-62) seasons. Floyd was 5-3 versus Arizona during his four seasons at USC ( ), including back-toback victories on the Wildcats home floor on Feb. 15, 2007 (80-75) and Feb. 28, 2008 (70-58). He is 0-1 against the Wildcats at UTEP with a loss in Tucson on Nov. 15, UTEP 80, SE LOUISIANA 62 [RECAP] Vince Hunter matched his career-high with 26 points on 11-of-13 shooting as UTEP won its second straight game, over Southeastern Louisiana on Tuesday in the Don Haskins Center. The Miners took care of business against the Lions, who were on the road for the eighth time in 10 games. UTEP closed the first half with a 12-4 run to surge ahead 31-20, then shot 67.9 percent in the second half in building leads of as many as 24 points. UTEP made 31-of-54 shots (.574), 6-of-14 three-pointers (.429) and 12-of-16 free throws (.750) and outrebounded the Lions The Miners also shored up their ball control after committing 22 turnovers in the previous game versus Incarnate Word. UTEP had 21 assists and 10 turnovers as big men Cedrick Lang and Matt Willms combined for 10 assists and no giveaways. Earvin Morris scored a career-high 17 points off the bench for UTEP, and Julian Washburn added 15 points. Willms was close to a doubledouble with nine points and nine rebounds. Nine players were on the floor 16 minutes or more for the Miners, and all scored. UTEP IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS Through the games of Dec. 16, Vince Hunter ranked tied for fifth nationally in double-doubles (six), 16th in defensive rebounds per game (7.0) and 18th in rebounds (10.1 rpg). 4 Individually, C.J. Cooper was third in assist/ turnover ratio (2.64), fourth in assists (4.1 apg) and 10th in minutes (31.9 mpg), Vince Hunter was first in rebounding (10.1 rpg), fourth in scoring (16.2 ppg) and eighth in field goal percentage (.554), Cedrick Lang was fifth in field goal percentage (.582), and Matt Willms was seventh in blocks (1.2 bpg). NOTING HUNTER Vince Hunter is UTEP s leader in scoring (16.2 ppg), rebounding (10.1 rpg) and steals (1.0 spg). The last Miner to lead the team in those three categories was Omar Thomas during the season. Hunter has led UTEP in both scoring and rebounding five times in nine games. Hunter became the first Miner to post a double-double in the first five games of a season since All-American Jim Barnes in He has six double-doubles in nine games. The last UTEP player to average a doubledouble for a season was Terry White in (10.1 ppg/10.2 rpg). Hunter could become only the 10th Miner player to average 10+ rebounds in a season, joining Barnes (twice), Charlie Brown, Jim Forbes, Harry Flournoy (twice), Dick Gibbs, Ed Haller (twice), David Lattin, Al Tolen and White. After being held scoreless in back-to-back games versus Colorado State and NM State, Hunter has erupted for 42 points and 19 rebounds in 49 minutes over the last two contests. He is 18-for-22 from the field (.818) during that span. His 11 field goals made against Southeastern Louisiana were the most by a Miner player since Christian Polk versus Memphis (11) in the 2011 C-USA Championship game. NOTING WASHBURN Julian Washburn has scored in double figures in four of the last five games, shooting 51 percent (25-for-49) from the field during that span UTEP BASKETBALL Washburn ranks fourth in school history in minutes (3,613), and 12th in points (1,284) and field goals (502). With 97 steals, Washburn is four away from tying Quintan Gates ( ) and Kevin Henderson ( ) for 14th place on the all-time Miner list. Washburn enters the Arizona game with 400 career rebounds. He leads the team with 70 career double-figure scoring games. He has led the Miners in scoring 23 times, rebounds nine times and assists 19 times during his career. He was named to the Conference USA All- Defensive Team as both a sophomore and junior. NOTING LANG Cedrick Lang is third on the team in scoring (10.7 ppg) and second in rebounding (6.2 rpg). Lang entered his senior year with a 6.2 ppg career scoring average. A.566 free throw shooter entering the season, he is 32-for-44 at the line in (.727), including 8-for-8 over the last three games. Lang scored in double figures in six consecutive games for the first time in his Miner career from Nov Dec. 6. Lang is the only Miner that has gone to the line in every game this season and is second on the team in attempts (44) behind Vince Hunter (51). He has 12 assists and three turnovers in the last five games and has committed one turnover or fewer in seven of nine contests. NOTING COOPER C.J. Cooper is seventh in school history with 121 three-point field goals. UTEP is 22-4 in his career when he scores in double figures. After scoring in double figures three times over the first four games, Cooper has done so once in the last five outings with a.280 (7-for-25) field goal percentage and.154 (2-for-13) three-point field goal percentage. UTEP is 4-1 all-time when Willms scores in double figures. Over the last four games, Willms has averaged 8.3 points and 7.8 rebounds with seven blocked shots. He has led the Miners in rebounding three times in the last four contests. NOTING THE NEWCOMERS Earvin Morris is fourth on the team in scoring (9.3 ppg). He has scored in double figures in three straight games (13.7 ppg) with a.533 field goal percentage and.583 three-point field goal percentage during that stretch. Morris has made 6-of-8 three-point attempts in the last two outings. Morris leads the Miners in bench points (67) and has scored in double figures in a reserve role four times. Omega Harris leads UTEP newcomers with three starts. He is tied for second on the team in steals (eight). He scored in double figures for the first time versus NM State (13 points). Lew Stallworth became the eighth Miner to score in double figures in a game this season when he put 13 points on the board versus Incarnate Word. He was perfect both from the field (4- for-4) and the line (5-for-5) against the Cardinals. Stallworth is 9-for-9 at the charity stripe in the last three games. NOTING THE MINERS Over the last two games the Miners have shot 61 percent (64-for-105) from the field. The.647 percentage versus Incarnate Word was UTEP s best in a game since Jan. 24, 1989 against Colorado State (.660). UTEP s second-half field goal percentage in the last two games is.679 (36-for-53). For the season, the Miners are shooting 43.1 percent in the first half and 51.2 percent in the second half. 5 UTEP has made 38-of-50 free throws (.760) in the last three games to elevate its season percentage from.649 to.677. The Miners have been outrebounded just once this season, by Colorado State (39-26). UTEP is 54-9 under Tim Floyd when outrebounding opponents. UTEP is 3-0 this season and 32-6 under Floyd when four or more players score in double figures. Either Vince Hunter or Matt Willms has led the Miners in rebounds in each of the first nine games. UTEP has had an edge in bench points in four consecutive games. During that span Miner reserves have outscored opponents subs UTEP hasn t had an advantage in bench points in five straight games since the season. The Miners +11 assist/turnover ratio (21-10) the last time out was their best since the season opener versus Loyola [New Orleans] (25-14). The Miners have employed six different starting lineup combinations through nine games. No player has started every game. DEFENSE UNDER FLOYD UTEP has allowed less than 70 points 104 times under Tim Floyd (in 142 games), less than 60 points 61 times and less than 50 points on 13 occasions. The Miners have held 60 teams under 40 percent shooting, posting a 53-7 record. During the Tim Floyd era, opponents have scored 8,954 points (63.1 avg.) while making 3,156-of-7,790 shots (.405) and 828-of-2,603 three pointers (.318). The Miners had a sub-.300 defensive threepoint field goal percentage (.295) last year for the first time in school history. UTEP s defensive field goal percentage last season (.382) was its best since (.381). The Miners closed out the campaign rated sixth nationally in defensive field goal percentage, ninth in three-point field goal percentage defense and 33rd in scoring defense (63.3 ppg). UTEP has allowed less than 64 points per game in four consecutive seasons ( ) for the first time since BEATING THE BEST The Miners have won 10 games versus teams from power conferences under coach Tim Floyd -- two per season -- including Washington State and Xavier this year. UTEP s victims were Michigan (65-56) and Texas Tech (82-71). In , the Miners topped Clemson (61-48) and Auburn (83-76). In , UTEP beat Oregon (91-84 in triple overtime) and Nebraska (68-52). In , the Miners knocked off eventual NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 participant Tennessee (78-70) and Washington State (64-51). PRESEASON PROGNOSTICATIONS The Miners received votes in both top-25 polls to open the season. UTEP was ranked second in the preseason C-USA Coaches Poll, with Vince Hunter and Julian Washburn both earning spots on the league s Preseason All-Conference Team. UTEP is picked first in Conference USA and ranked 25th nationally by Lindy s yearbook. Vince Hunter is rated the no. 12 power forward in the nation by Lindy s, and Julian Washburn the no. 24 small forward. The Sporting News yearbook has UTEP #2 in C-USA and rates the Don Haskins Center the best venue in the league. NOVEMBER SIGNEES The UTEP men s basketball program added three players for the season and beyond in November as guard Lee Moore, forward/center Christian Romine and forward Paul Thomas signed national letters of intent with the Miners. The 6-5, 175-pound Moore will have two years of eligibility with the Miners after transferring from Wallace State Community College in Hanceville, Ala. He is rated the no. 8 junior college recruit in the nation by 247Sports. The 6-9, 215-pound Romine is a senior at Mahomet Seymour High School in Mahomet, Illinois. He is a three-star recruit by Rivals.com and the no. 18 player in Illinois by 247Sports. The 6-8, 190-pound Thomas is regarded as a four-star prospect and the no. 14 player in Texas by ESPN. He plays for Summer Creek High School in Humble, Texas. 20TH YEAR FOR C-USA Conference USA celebrates its 20th season in This is UTEP s 10th year as a member of the league. The Miners have posted a combined mark of (.634) in league games since joining C- USA for the campaign. UTEP has posted double-digit C-USA victories in five of the last six years. The Miners C-USA mark has improved in each of the last three seasons from 7-9 to 10-6 and UTEP finished a game behind cochampions Louisiana Tech, Middle Tennessee, Southern Miss and Tulsa a year ago. UP NEXT UTEP will join Alcorn State, Kent State and North Dakota State in the 53rd edition of the WestStar Bank Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational on Sunday and Monday (Dec ) at the Haskins Center. The Sunday matchups are Kent State versus North Dakota State at 5 p.m., and UTEP versus Alcorn State at 7 p.m. The consolation and championship will be at 5 and 7 p.m. respectively on Monday.
