THE SERIES UTEP leads the series 4-1, including 3-1 in games played in El Paso. The Miners hosted the Roadrunners during the (won 65-37), (won 71-62), (won 78-61) and (lost 73-64) seasons. The game was the Miners season opener. Current players who appeared in the game are UTSA s Jordan Sims & Tyler Wood, and UTEP s John Bohannon, C.J. Cooper, Cedrick Lang, Hooper Vint and Julian Washburn. Bohannon scored 12 points in the matchup, while Washburn added eight points, Lang seven, Cooper six and Vint four. It marked the UTEP debuts for Cooper, Lang, Vint and Washburn. UTEP played at UTSA during the campaign and prevailed THE LAST MEETING Melvin Johnson III scored five of his nine points during a crucial 10-2 second half run, and UTSA held off a late rally by UTEP to win the season opener between the two teams, on Nov. 11, 2011 at the Don Haskins Center. The spurt gave the Roadrunners a lead after UTEP had pulled to within six points (43-37) on a three pointer by C.J. Cooper with 14:43 remaining. Afterwards, the Miners fell behind by as many as 18 points before closing the gap to single digits in the final minute. The Miners trailed at the half. UTEP, however, couldn t match its defensive intensity in the second half, as UTSA hit 60 percent of its shots in pulling away. The Miners were also outrebounded 15-9 in the second half after dominating the glass (27-11) in the first 20 minutes. The Roadrunners scored 12 second chance points, all after halftime. UTEP led just once, at 1-0 on a John Bohannon free throw three minutes in. Bohannon, making his season debut after sitting out both exhibitions for disciplinary reasons, led the Miners with 12 points, and Jacques Streeter added 11 points. Alex Vouyoukas and Michael Hale III paced the Roadrunners, a 2011 NCAA Tournament team, with 12 points apiece. The Miners finished with 21 turnovers, leading to 23 points for UTSA. UTEP shot 45.1 percent on the night, including 57.7 percent in the second half, but continued to struggle from the charity stripe, making 11-of-21 foul shots. UTEP 63, UAB 61 (RECAP) John Bohannon hit the go-ahead basket with 1:58 remaining, and C.J. Cooper added a three pointer with 55 seconds left as UTEP held on for a win at UAB on Jan. 18. The Miners dealt the Blazers their first home loss of the season. UAB had been 10-0 at Bartow Arena. UTEP was in control for most of the night and led throughout the second half until Rod Rucker s layup with 3:40 left put the Blazers ahead It was UAB s first lead since midway through the first period. Bohannon made two free throws at the 3:23 mark and the Miners regained the lead, Rucker s foul shots with 2:19 to go put UAB ahead before Bohannon took over once again. Cooper s triple made the score The Blazers Robert Williams was fouled on the other end and made both free throws to cut it to with 49 seconds to play. With the shot clock winding down, Cooper airballed a jumper. Vince Hunter grabbed the offensive rebound and banked in a wild shot from near the three-point line. The officials took several minutes to review before determining the basket came after the shot clock ran out. UAB had the ball down two with 15 seconds left. Williams missed a three pointer, Cooper snared the defensive rebound and kicked it to Bohannon, who threw it to the other end of the floor hoping the clock would run out. Hunter had 18 points and nine rebounds. Cooper scored 17. Bohannon added 11 points and eight boards. The Miners outshot UAB slightly, 44.4 percent to 42.3 percent. They made 9-of-11 free throws. But perhaps most significant, they were outrebounded by only one (33-32). The Blazers entered the game ranked fourth nationally in rebound margin. UAB s two big guns - Chad Frazier and C.J. Washington - scored 13 and 11 points respectively. Frazier shot 3-for-9 from the field. Rebounding and defense have keyed the hot streak. UTEP s rebound margin in the six games is +2.8 per contest. Bohannon now has 1,023 career points. He is seven points shy of tying Jim Babers ( ) for 31st place. He is 22 points away from tying Nolan Richardson ( ) for 30th place. BOHANNON S PLACE IN UTEP HISTORY Not only has John Bohannon etched his name in the UTEP record book as a 1,000-point scorer, he is also second in blocked shots (145) and 11th with 715 rebounds. UTEP s all-time blocked shots leader is David Van Dyke with 336 from Bohannon is chasing Dave Feitl, who is 10th in school annals with 726 rebounds.
