UTEP was overall and 10-8 in Conference USA in Louisiana College, a Division III program, was 14-13, 8-7 in the American Southwest Conference. The Miners are in season openers and 50-5 in their last 55. UTEP has won its last four season openers. UTEP is 34-4 in home openers in the Haskins Center. The Miners are opening a season in El Paso for the ninth straight year and for the 15th time in 16 years. UTEP is 4-2 in both season openers and home openers under coach Tim Floyd. 200TH GAME FOR FLOYD The Louisiana College game marks Tim Floyd s 200th as head coach of the Miners. Floyd is on the UTEP bench, a.613 winning percentage that ranks third in school history. UTEP IN THE DHC The Miners are all-time in the Don Haskins Center, a.773 winning percentage. UTEP is (.780) in the Haskins Center under coach Tim Floyd. The Miners are (.778) in non-conference home games during the Floyd era. ABOUT LOUISIANA COLLEGE While this is UTEP's regular season opener, it is the second of three exhibition games to open the campaign for Louisiana College. The Wildcats dropped a decision at Louisiana Monroe on Monday and will play at McNeese State on Nov. 15 prior to their first regular season game against Millsaps College on Nov. 26. The Wildcats return three of their top five scorers from last year s squad. The top returnees are senior forward Raheem Regis (13.5 ppg in ), senior guard Kevin Cottonham (11.5 ppg) and senior forward Steve Evans (8.9 ppg). Cottonham played in just six games last season, compiling 22 assists and 10 turnovers, before receiving a medical redshirt. The Wildcats comitted 23 turnovers that ULM exploited into 27 points. Louisiana College Head Coach Reni Mason played for Tim Floyd at New Orleans from Louisiana College Assistant Coach Jonathan Brooks was on Tim Floyd s UTEP staff from as a manager. He doubles as the school s men s and women s cross country coach. SERIES HISTORY The series is tied 1-1. The teams first met on Jan. 7, 1978 at the Don Haskins Center with the Wildcats erasing a halftime deficit and scoring a upset. UTEP exacted some revenge on Dec. 23, 1980 by routing Louisiana College in El Paso. In the last matchup between the schools the Miners registered 18 steals, the third-top total in school history. Anthony Burns added 13 points. Eric Alexander was credited with five of UTEP s 18 steals. Louisiana College committed 29 turnovers, including nine by David Dutt and eight by Robert Myer, who also scored 22 points. RETURNING PERCENTAGES The Miners return three starters and seven letterwinners from last year s 19-win squad. UTEP welcomes back players who accounted for 47 percent (1,209-of-2,554) of the team s points, 51 percent (563-of-1,101) of the rebounds and 58 percent (297-of-512) of the assists in YOUTHFUL MINERS A year ago the Miners returned 35.5 percent of their scoring, 30.6 percent of their rebounds and 30.1 percent of their assists from the squad. While those numbers are all up substantially, this is still a young UTEP team. Of the 16 players on the roster, 12 are freshmen or sophomores. The composition by class: seniors (one), juniors (three), sophomores (five) and freshmen (seven). One of the sophomores, Isiah Osborne, is sitting out the season per NCAA rules after transferring from the University of Windsor. UTEP has the second-most freshmen in Conference USA (seven) behind Rice (eight). The Miners are tied with Rice for the most underclassmen in the league (12). The Miners are also tied with Rice for the fewest seniors in Conference USA (one). UTEP s four upperclassmen are tied for the fewest in the league with the Owls. THREE RETURNING DOUBLE-FIGURE SCORERS The season marks the first time in 12 years that UTEP returns three players who posted double-figure scoring averages the season before, and only the ninth time since Omega Harris averaged 12.3 ppg, Dominic Artis 11.9 ppg and Terry Winn 10.0 ppg a year ago. In the Miners returned Omar Thomas (15.5 ppg in ), Jason Williams (11.6 ppg), Filiberto Rivera (11.2 ppg) and John Tofi (10.8 ppg). That team finished 27-8, 14-4 in the WAC, won the WAC Tournament title and played in the NCAA Tournament. Other UTEP squads since 1950 that have returned three or more double-figure scorers, and their records: (19-7), (22-6), (20-8), (23-10), (21-11), (10-22) and (24-8). EXHIBITION BITS The Miners hosted two Division II teams, beating Southeastern Oklahoma (Oct. 30) and Alaska in overtime (Nov. 5). The Miners averaged 83.5 points in the two games, shooting 48.7 percent (57-for-117) from the field, 45 percent (9-for-20) from three-point range and 69.8 percent (44-for-63) from the line. UTEP s opponents averaged 79.0 ppg with a.414 field goal percentage (55-for-133),.367 three-point percentage (22-for-60) and.703 free throw percentage (26-for-37). The Miners made more free throws (44) than their opponents attempted (37). UTEP allowed 83 points in the first halves of the two games, but only 64 in the second halves. UTEP's rebound margin was per game. The Miners had a edge on the defensive board. The Miners scored 78 points off turnovers (39.0 per game), and opponents scored 40 (20.0 per game). Dominic Artis averaged 21.0 points in the two games, shooting 46.9 percent (15-for-32) from the field, 66.7 percent (2-for-3) from outside and 76.9 percent (10-for-13) from the charity stripe. He also averaged 2.0 steals. Terry Winn averaged 16.5 ppg and 9.5 boards, making 13-of-28 shots (.464) and 7-of-9 free throws (.778). Omega Harris averaged 10.5 ppg while only appearing in three of four halves. He made 7-of-12 shots (.583), 2-of-4 three-pointers (.500) and 5-of-6 free throws (.833), and dished out six assists with only one turnover. Matt Willms scored 10 points in 14 minutes versus Alaska, and fellow big man Kelvin Jones averaged 5.5 ppg and 7.0 rpg in a reserve role. A total of 14 players saw action in the two games. Minutes leaders were Artis (67), Winn (63), Harris (54), Jake Flaggert (47) and Trey Touchet (40). SENIOR CLASS UTEP has one senior on the roster, guard Dominic Artis. He has career totals of 735 points, 277 rebounds, 315 assists and 103 steals in three collegiate seasons ( at Oregon, 2015-present at UTEP). He has appeared in 86 games.

3 Artis averaged 11.9 points, 5.1 rebounds, 5.2 assists and 1.3 steals in his first year with the Miners. He dished out 170 assists last season, most among returning C-USA players and 10th-most in a season in UTEP history. Artis came very close to recording only the second triple-double in school history last season. The first was registered by Jason Williams versus Lipscomb in the NIT (17 points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists) on March 14, Artis flirted with a triple-double versus Loyola (16 points, nine rebounds, eight assists), UTRGV (21 points, eight rebounds, eight assists), LA Tech (23 points, 10 rebounds, nine assists) and Florida Atlantic (13 points, nine rebounds, nine assists) in Artis registered eight games with eight or more rebounds and led the team in rebounding nine times last season. ON GUARD Despite losing its top two scorers off of last year s squad -- Lee Moore (15.4 ppg) and Earvin Morris (13.4 ppg) -- UTEP has good returning depth in the backcourt. Senior Dominic Artis (30) and junior Omega Harris (19) combined to make 49 starts last season. Harris averaged 12.3 points with solid shooting percentages across the board percent from the field, 44 from three-point range and 74.1 from the line. His three-point percentage ranked fourth in school history and first among sophomores. Harris has scored in double figures in eight of his last nine games. Junior Jake Flaggert has made 61 appearances for the Miners and shot 37.1 percent from three-point range. He topped C-USA in charges drawn (18) in Flaggert has taken 24 charges in his career. Sophomore Trey Touchet played in 30 games in his initial season with the Miners, serving as Artis backup at point guard. UP FRONT The Miners didn t have much of a post presence in but that is expected to change this year with the return of 7-1 Matt Willms and the addition of 6-11 freshman Kelvin Jones. UTEP is also counting on an improved campaign from 6-8 sophomore Paul Thomas, who played in 22 games as a rookie and collected 46 points and 40 rebounds. The top returnee in the frontcourt is sophomore Terry Winn, who earned a spot on the 2016 C-USA All-Freshman Team after averaging 10.0 points and 6.4 rebounds. Winn s 204 rebounds were the fourth-most in a season by a Miner freshman. Winn ranked second on the team in free throw attempts last season (149) despite averaging just 23.2 minutes per game. Willms was eighth in Conference USA in blocked shots (1.1 avg.) in JONES STORY One of the freshmen UTEP is counting on this season Kelvin Jones -- has had an amazing road to El Paso. He grew up in Galeana, Chihuahua, Mexico, where his father was the mayor. He played soccer and volleyball. In 2011, after cartel violence claimed two relatives, the family left in the middle of the night and moved to Bismarck, North Dakota. Jones started playing basketball his freshman year in high school. He was 6-9 and the school didn t have a volleyball program. He finished his prep career at Hobbs [N.M.] High School, where he averaged 14.7 points, 9.9 rebounds and 3.2 blocks for a 30-2, state championship team. Jones put on 20 pounds in-between his junior and senior seasons. He walked on his first year at UTEP and sold pesticides door-to-door in Houston so he could have enough money to pay for his college tuition. FRESHMAN CLASS UTEP has a total of seven freshmen on its roster, including walk-ons Jose Martinez and Hudson Urbanus. Guard Chris Barnes averaged 12 points at Compton High School last season and was a member of a state championship team at Bishop Montgomery High School (Torrance, Calif.) in Guard Deon Barrett led Lancaster HS (Dallas area) to back-to-back 5A state titles and a 69-6 record over the last two years. Guard Tim Cameron was a member of a 47-1, national prep championship squad at Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Va. in Center Kelvin Jones led Hobbs (N.M.) High School to a 6A state title as a senior. Guard Adrian Moore was rated a four-star recruit and a top-50 player in the country by Future150.com while at North Little Rock (Ark.) High School. THE SCHEDULE For the fifth time in six years, UTEP will be participating in an ESPN in-season tournament as it takes part in the Gildan Charleston Classic Nov at TD Arena in Charleston, S.C. The Miners will play three games in an event that also features defending national champion Villanova, Boise State, College of Charleston, Mississippi State, UCF, Wake Forest and Western Michigan. UTEP will take on Wake Forest on Nov. 17, and either Villanova or Western Michigan on Nov. 18. UTEP and Wake Forest have met twice previously with the series tied 1-1. The Miners beat the Demon Deacons, 90-75, in the Sun Carnival Classic Tournament on Dec. 28, 1984 in El Paso. Wake Forest topped UTEP, 82-79, in the 76 Classic at Anaheim on Nov. 28, The 19th-ranked Demon Deacons were led by current Indiana Pacer Jeff Teague, who scored 29 points, while Stefon Jackson tallied 31 points for the Miners. Also highlighting the non-conference slate is the return of a home-and-home series with arch-rival New Mexico. The Miners will play at The Pit in Albuquerque on Dec. 7. Joining UTEP in the Bank of the West Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational (Dec ) in El Paso will be defending champ UC-Irvine, Akron and Maryland Eastern Shore. STAFF ADDITIONS UTEP has two new staff members for the season, including one who has spent time in El Paso previously. Kris Baumann will serve as an assistant coach and J.A. Anglin takes over as Director of Scouting and Player Personnel. Baumann comes to El Paso following four years as the head coach at Trinity Valley Community College, where he forged a record. Baumann has been a head coach at the junior college level for the last 13 years, including three seasons at Lamar Community College ( ) and six at Garden City Community College ( ). His career head coaching record is with eight 20-win seasons. Anglin spent the previous three years as an assistant coach at the University of Louisiana Monroe. He helped the Warhawks to 44 victories over the last two seasons. Earlier this year, Anglin was one of 30 assistant coaches across the country named to the Under Armour 30-under-30 Team. The team is composed of the nation s brightest assistant coaches under the age of 30. Anglin was Assistant Director of Basketball Operations at UTEP from In addition, Bobby Braswell has been promoted to assistant coach and Evan Eustachy has been elevated to Director of Basketball Operations. TIDBITS FROM The Miners were an offensive juggernaut a year ago, scoring 80+ points 15 times (one shy of the school record). UTEP s 223 three-point field goals were a school standard, while the Miners also registered the fourth-most field goals in a season (896), the fifth-most assists (512) and the fifthmost points (2,554). It was Tim Floyd s highest-scoring team (77.4 ppg). The Miners shot 50 percent or better in 13 games, including nine of the last 12. The club started fast (6-0) and finished strong (8-3). THE FLOYD ERA UTEP has posted 122 wins, an average of 20.3 per season, in six years under coach Tim Floyd. The Miners have fashioned a mark of in Conference USA play during that span, with top-three finishes on three occasions (tied for

5 second , third , tied for second ). UTEP has registered double-digit C-USA victories in five of the six years, including in each of the last four. MORE ON FLOYD Tim Floyd is in his seventh season on the UTEP bench with a career record of , including with the Miners. Floyd ranks second in school history in victories behind the legendary Don Haskins (719) and has also coached the second-most games of any UTEP coach (199). Floyd has enjoyed 20 winning seasons in 22 years as a collegiate head coach. His teams have made eight NCAA Tournament appearances and five trips to the NIT. Floyd previously was the head coach at Idaho ( ), New Orleans ( ), Iowa State ( ) and USC ( ). He was also head coach of the Chicago Bulls ( ) and the New Orleans Hornets ( ) in the NBA. DEFENSE UNDER FLOYD UTEP has allowed less than 70 points 129 times under Tim Floyd (in 199 games), less than 60 points 72 times and less than 50 points on 17 occasions. Gilyard is a 5-9, 160-pound guard from Simeon Career Academy in Chicago, which has produced numerous NBA standouts including Milwaukee Bucks forward Jabari Parker and New York Knicks guard Derrick Rose. Gilyard is regarded as a three-star prospect by ESPN and the no. 13 player in Illinois. He averaged 13.5 points and 3.2 assists last season while shooting 49 percent from three-point range. He was second team All-City, two-time All-Conference and honorable mention All-State. He scored 14 points in the fourth quarter of the city championship game as Simeon beat Kenwood Gilyard, who has led Simeon Career Academy to a 96-7 record, continued to turn heads on the AAU circuit this summer while playing for the Meanstreets 16- and 17-under teams. Magee is a 6-0, 140-pound guard from Brandeis High School in San Antonio. He averaged 17.9 points as a junior with 79 threepointers, helping Brandeis to a 31-2 mark and a top-10 state ranking. A starter since his freshman year, Magee has garnered All-District honors twice and has been a part of three 20-win teams. He was appointed to the Northside NISD and San Antonio ISD All-Tournament teams on a pair of occasions. Smith is a 6-8, 230-pound forward from Petal (Miss.) High School. Now in his third year as a varsity letterwinner, he was appointed to The Clarion-Ledger s Dandy Dozen as one of the 12 best players in the state of Mississippi for the campaign. He averaged 16 points, 11 rebounds and 2.5 blocks last season. Smith participated in the MAC/Mississippi Sports Medicine All-Star Classic as a member of the South team in March. Smith also played for the Elfrid Payton Elite AAU team. The Miners fall recruiting class also includes guards Isiah Osborne and Trey Wade who are currently with the program and sitting out the campaign. The 6-5, 190-pound Osborne averaged 15.0 points at the University of Windsor last year. He was named the CIS (Canadian Interuniversity Sport) Rookie of the Year as well as the OUA (Ontario University Athletics) Rookie of the Year. The 6-5, 180-pound Wade hails from South Cobb High School in Austell, Ga. He averaged 19.1 points and 7.5 rebounds as a senior in , shooting 48 percent from the field.
