Despite a 1-0 loss to UC San Diego on Sunday, the Golden Eagles hung on to the top spot in the CCAA South Division standings, just one point ahead of the Tritons. Sunday s loss snapped a season-long four-match win streak. Cal State L.A. has outscored its opponents 2-8, led by the nine scores of Ann Marie Tangorra and eight from the foot of Liz Franco. CSULA spent six of its first eight conference matches on the road and will close out the season with seven home dates in its last eight contests. SSU is all-time against CSULA. The Toros, who lost 1-0 in the national championship match last season against Grand Valley State, went to start the season, but has since lost two of their last three matches. Most recently, though, Cal State Dominguez Hills defeated Cal State East Bay 3-1 on Sunday. Offense Held Scoreless In Last Three Games, Earns Point On #24 Warriors For the third straight match, the Seawolves were held off the scoreboard, but the defense came up big against then-24th-ranked Cal State Stanislaus, forcing the Warriors to a 0-0 tie on Sunday. In a rematch with Chico State on Friday, the Wildcats scored a goal in each half to defeat Sonoma State 2-0. It is the ninth time in 11 matches this season that SSU has been held scoreless, a school record. Despite Scoring Struggles, Seawolves Outshooting Opponents Scoring just five goals in their 11 matches this season, the Seawolves have outshot their opponents , including an advantage in shots on goal, 2-7. However, opponents have scored 14 goals, nine more than SSU. The Seawolves snapped a season-long scoring drought of 87 minutes, 8 seconds with a 3-0 victory over Cal State Monterey Bay on Oct. 1. Ever since, Sonoma State has been held scoreless for 30 minutes, 21 seconds. Seawolves versus Toros LIVE on the Toro Sports Network Sunday Sonoma State soccer fans can follow the Seawolves on Sunday when they visit Cal State Dominguez Hills. Both games of the doubleheader will be nationally televised live via Internet TV on the Toro Sports Network. Fans can watch free of charge and there is no registration required. Coverage will begin at about 11:1 a.m. online at with the opening kickoff of the women s contest at the bottom of the hour. About 1:4 p.m., coverage of the men s match will begin with kickoff at the top of the hour. David Smock will call the play-by-play action from Toro Stadium in Carson. Seawolves Snap Scoreless Streak, Beat Otters On Oct. 1 against Cal State Monterey Bay, Sara Studer scored two goals and Allison Kern put the match out of question with a score late in the game, ending a six-match scoreless streak for Sonoma State en route to a 3-0 victory. Studer put the Seawolves on the board early with a header past the Otter goalkeeper, just seven and a half minutes into the match. The score remained 1-0 until Studer added her second goal of the day in the 72nd minute and just over two minutes later, Kern gave the Seawolves a comfortable 3-0 lead. It ended a streak of 87 minutes and 8 seconds that Sonoma State was held scoreless. The Seawolves remain unbeaten by the Otters, improving to over CSUMB. 2 Head Coach Luke Oberkirch Luke Oberkirch begins his 1th season as head coach of the women s soccer team at Sonoma State University. Since 199, when he took over as head coach, Luke Oberkirch has complied a overall record and a mark in conference play. In his 1 complete seasons, Oberkirch has guided his team to seven first place finishes, including five in the CCAA s North Division and two in the Northern California Athletic Conference. The 2009 season was one of frustration and missed opportunities for a talented Sonoma State squad. Stricken by numerous injuries, especially on the attack, the Seawolves stumbed to an overall record, though they did still finish in a second place tie in the CCAA North. Eight of their nine losses came by a single goal. Despite it all, defender Lindsay Catton was named an All-American for the second straight year, becoming the first SSU player to accomplish the back-to-back feat since Coach Oberkirch joined the Sonoma State staff in 1990, the year the women s soccer team brought home the school s first-ever NCAA National Championship. As SSU s top assistant coach from under Peter Reynaud, Oberkirch was an important part of the team s incredible success. The teams won five consecutive NCAC titles and made the NCAA playoffs five years in a row. In 199, Oberkirch was named the third head coach in the program s history. Prior to coming to Sonoma State, Oberkirch was head coach of the boys soccer team at Montgomery High School in Santa Rosa from In 1988, his team won the North Bay League Championship and in each of his three seasons, his team made the CIF North Coach Section playoffs. A San Diego State graduate, Oberkirch received his B.A. in Physical Education in 1987 and earned his teaching credential from Sonoma State in Luke and his wife Michele reside in Cloverdale with their son Jayk. Battling through a scoreless match that included two overtimes, the Seawolves forced a tie, earning their first point in 1 matches against UCSD. Sonoma State is now against UC San Diego. Be sure to check it out! 2009 Year in Review Coming off a 1-win season in 2008 and a first place finish in the CCAA North Division, the Seawolves got off to a great start in 2009 with two straight convincing wins to start the year two non-conference victories against Hawaii-Hilo and Notre Dame de Namur. Then, a weekend trip to Washington State slowed the Seawolves momentum with two one-goal losses against Saint Martin s and Western Washington before conference play started a week later. Sonoma State would go on to win its first CCAA matches, but then played extra time in four of its next five matches, which could account for the injuries suffered early on. With 10 conference matches to play, the Seawolves found themselves at 2-2-2, including four double overtime nailbiters, causing some physical and emotional fatigue. The rest of the schedule showed some up and down moments, but the Seawolves ended on a high note, winning two of their last three matches. They found themselves in unchartered territory, though, as Sonoma State fell under the.00 mark for the first time since 198 with an record.
