2 Quoting Lute Olson... On the makeup of the roster: There is no question that it will be a young team with a lot of inexperience. Our young guys will play very important parts. The incoming freshmen are very talented and each had a great senior season. I am comfortable that they are all very good players." Where will the leadership come from: "This season ( ) is going to be one where we get all of our leadership from our juniors, Luke Walton, Rick Anderson, and Jason Gardner. We don't have a senior on the roster. I think Travis Hanour will step up big for us this year. He really showed signs of breaking out. Being behind Gilbert (Arenas), he didn't get a lot of court time, but he got valuable work in practice." "The biggest thing to realize in is that there will be a lot of ups and downs. Our coaching staff and our fans need to be patient as this team develops." Does this year s youthful makeup remind you of any other UA teams: The 1997 team is reminiscent of that inexperience factor. We had a freshman point guard (Mike Bibby), a sophomore center that played an average of nine minutes the year before (A.J. Bramlett), two new guys in Eugene Edgerson and Bennett Davison, and Jason Terry was a sophomore with limited experience. We had two wing players in (Michael) Dickerson and (Miles) Simon that had been key guys for us." On Jason Gardner s effect on the squad: Jason s return puts a veteran guard on the court. I think we have excellent talent in the guard spots. If there isn t someone out there that has been through things before, that can be a problem. If you look back to 1997, Mike Bibby was an outstanding freshman point guard and he really benefited from having a veteran in Miles at the two-guard. In Jason s situation, we ve got a guard on the court that gives us a real presence. More so than with Miles because Jason will have the ball Tentative Schedule (as of May 9, 2001) in his hands." On the schedule: The schedule is very difficult. We originally set it up with thought of having a lot of experience back (for the 2002 season). It will definitely be real challenge with the Coaches vs. Cancer tournament in New York and early games at Michigan State and Texas. We have some big, big hurdles to clear." Will this season present a greater challenge due to the youth: "From a coaching standpoint, every year is a challenge. But this year will be an even greater one with so much youth.
