ACC Network Extra the matchup The Tigers hit the road for the first time in the 20 season, traveling just down Interstate 385 to take on long-time rival South Carolina. Tipoff at Colonial Life Arena is set for 6:30 p.m. with Pam Ward and Carolyn Peck on the call for SEC Network. William Qualkinbush and Kelly Gramlich will have the radio call on Clemson Tiers Network. For the 44th consecutive year, Clemson and South Carolina will meet in a regular season contest. Up until the season, the two teams met twice a year for a home-and-home series. Beginning in the season, the schools played one regular season game a year, alternating locations every year. Clemson holds the all-time series edge at but that mark falls to when playing at Colonial Life Arena. In the last meeting between the two programs, the Gamecocks emerged victorious, in Clemson. Three different Tigers, Camreé Clegg, Taylor Hosendove and Chyna Cotton, all set new career-highs in points against Lipscomb. Sophomore Tylar Bennett played a career game against the Bisons, leading the team in rebounds with 11, a new career-high for the Michigan native. Bennett also tallied a career-best four assists and two steals in the contest. tiger leaders scouting the gamecocks South Carolina enters the 20 season ranked 10th in the nation by the Associated Press, after finishing in sixth in the final poll from a season ago. Despite losing senior A Ja Wilson, who posted 22.6 points per game for the Gamecocks last year, South Carolina returns four of five starters for this season. The Gamecocks enter Thursday s contest 1-0 after topping Alabama State on Sunday. Four different South Carolina players posted double-digit outings in the game, led by Te a Cooper who notched 17 points. Duke Virginia L1 bench play In the first two games of the season, the Clemson bench has been a grounding force for the Tigers and has provided Coach Butler with options throughout the contests. All six players on the Clemson bench have tallied baskets this season, led by freshmen Taylor Hosendove and junior Chyna Cotton, each of whom have 12 points. Altogether, the Tigers bench has accounted for almost one-third (53-of-153) of Clemson s total points this season. They are shooting 41 percent from the field (16-of-39) with a 33.3 percent mark from 3-point range. On the defensive side of the ball, the bench has totaled 23 rebounds and notched six steals. Several bench players recorded career outings against Lipscomb including Cotton (eight points) and Clegg (nine points). Additionally, Keniece Purivs dished a career-best three assists. non-conference warriors Clemson posted a 10-3 record in non-conference action a season ago, including a season-long five-game win streak from Nov. 30 to Dec. 17. The Tigers held their non-conference foes to under 60 points in eight of the 13 games, including a season-low 28 points by Kennesaw State. All-time, the Tigers hold a record in regular season non-conference action. Clemson is particularly strong in non-conference games at home, posting a record when playing in front of the home crowd. The Tigers have squared of with opponents from the Southeastern Conference since their first year in action, posting a mark over the past 43 seasons. Besides South Carolina, Clemson has not faced an SEC opponent since Dec. 28, 2009 when it was edged by Georgia. returning stars The Tigers return two of their five starters from a season ago, including leading point scorer Kobi Thornton and veteran senior Danielle Edwards. Thornton also led the team in rebounds (209) and blocks (51). Edwards created opportunities for the Tigers on the defensive end, averaging 2.6 steals per game. Upperclassmen Aliyah Collier, Keniece Purvis and Chyna Cotton provide depth at the guard position. Collier, who battled an injury last season, has shown an ability to get to basket and make plays. Purvis is an alternative at the point, while Cotton primarily plays at the wings. One of the most improved players from a season ago is Tylar Bennett, who showed vast growth during the summer months. The sophomore totaled 85 rebounds in 29 games a season ago. Along with shooting guard Destiny Thomas, Clemson returns much of its attack from new blood The new faces for the Tigers comes in the form of three freshmen and three transfers. Clemson adds a much-needed 3-point shooter in UT-Martin transfer Kendall Spray, although the guard will have to sit out the 20 season due to transfer rules. From Florida, Clemson acquired post play Mikayla Hayes and graduate transfer Simone Westbrook. Hayes, who was originally recruited by Coach Butler, played one season at Florida before coming to Clemson to learn under Butler. Westbrook is the only current Tiger to have ever played for Coach Butler, suiting up at Florida from Three freshmen join the Clemson squad, two forwards in Taylor Hosendove and Skylar Blackstock, and a guard in Camreé Clegg. Butler emphasizes an aggressive style of play on both offense and defense. The up-tempo offense the Tigers will run the season utilizes the entire length of the court and allows the team to capitalize on fast break opportunities. Making plays in transition will be vital to a Clemson offense that would like to set an early tone of quick play. On the defensive side of the ball, the aggressive mindset results in many tips and forced turnovers, creating more opportunities on offense for the Tigers. tough slate Clemson is in for a grueling schedule this season as the Tigers faceoff with eight top 25 teams (preseason AP) in 20. The highlights of the slate includes reigning National Champion, Notre Dame, along with five other top-25 ACC teams. The Tigers square-off with 11 tournament teams from a season ago, three in non-conference action and eight following the new year when the team picks up ACC play. Over Thanksgiving, Clemson is headed to Bimini, Bahamas to participate in the Junkanoo Jam. The field is stacked as the Tigers go up against perennial favorite Tennessee in the first round, before facing either Oklahoma or UAB, both of whom made postseason appearances. Despite the tough schedule ahead, Clemson is fortunate to have a slate that favors the home team, as 17 of the Tigers 29 games take place at Littlejohn Coliseum, including a seven-game home stand in December review The Tigers finished the season with an record (1-15 ACC). Last season was a team effort as nine different players averaged at least 18.0 minutes per game throughout the season. Eight of those nine players tallied a start during the campaign, led by junior Danielle Edwards who started all 30 games for the Tigers. Additionally, every single Clemson player (14 total) recorded a point, an assist and a rebound in Seven players notched double-digit steals throughout the season, as well. For her defensive performance throughout the season, Dani Edwards earned All-ACC Defensive Team honors at the end of the year. The junior recorded 78 steals on the season, marking her third consecutive season with at least 50 steals. Clemson had some rocks at the free throw line this season as five Tigers posted free throw percentages that exceeded 70 percent. Alexis Carter and Danielle Edwards each recorded perfect free throw games knocking down 2-of-12 and 10-of-10, respectively. 6 head coach amanda butler With 20-plus years of coaching experience under her belt, including 12 seasons as a Division I head coach, Amanda Butler has all the tools and experience to take over the helm of the Clemson women s basketball program. Butler stepped into her role as head coach on April 12, 2018, ready to make her mark on Clemson. A Successful With an overall head coaching record of , Butler is no stranger to success, having led her team to 10 postseason berths in 12 years. Four of those 10 postseason appearances came in the NCAA Tournament, advancing to the Second Round three times and the First Round once. In 12 years at the Division I level, Butler has coached her teams to seven 20-win seasons, including a 24-8 season while with the Gators, tying a program record for wins in a season. 365 Days and 23,273 Miles Later Following her time at Florida, Butler spent the season seeing basketball through a different lens by putting herself in a learning environment every single day. Butler spent time with the Orland Magic s Summer League team, observed the values instilled by Thunder coaches and absorbed information at the Celtics annual clinics. As an analyst, she was afforded the chance to view basketball from yet another angle and provide a voice for the women s basketball community. Time with the Gators Most recently, Butler spent 10 seasons at the head of the Florida Gators women s basketball program, posting a record in that span with eight postseason berths. She averaged 19.0 wins per season in her 10 years at Florida and was responsible for six of the program s 15 total 20-win seasons. Under her direction, the squad (24-8) cracked the top-25 in the national polls for the first time since the season. Butler coached the team to a program-best 15-game winning streak and won a program-record seven consecutive games against SEC teams. Butler s mentorship led to 10 All-SEC selections and eight All-SEC Freshman Team honorees during her 10 years at Florida. Following the spectacular season, Sha Brooks received WBCA and AP All-America Honorable Mention status. As a coach, Butler was a United States Marine Corps/WBCA NCAA Division I National Coach of the Year finalist in Head Coach Debut Butler began her head coaching career at Charlotte, where the 49ers posted a record in two seasons. She led the 49ers to two WNIT berths and the team s first-ever share of the Atlantic 10 Conference regular-season championship. In her debut season, Butler s team posted a 21-9 mark and a WNIT appearance, earning her Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year honors. Stops Along the Way After graduating from Florida in 1994, Butler transitioned into an assistant coach role with the team under then-florida coach Carol Ross. In two seasons as an assistant coach, Butler mentored the team to two NCAA Tournament berths, including an Elite Eight appearance. She spent the next four seasons a little closer to home, serving as an assistant coach for Austin Peay State University in Tennessee. While there, Butler took over the recruiting efforts for the Lady Govs, an effort that translated into immense success as one of her recruits, Brooke Armistead, went on to earn OVC Freshman of the Year (2000) and OVC Player of the Year (2003). In May of 2001, Butler took her talents to the state of North Carolina, joining the Charlotte women s basketball staff as an assistant coach. In her second year with the program, the 49ers captured the 2003 Conference-USA regular-season title and earned their first-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament. Butler earned a promotion to associate head coach following the season and continued her success in recruiting, bringing to Charlotte four All-Atlantic 10 selections, four Conference USA All-Freshman team members and one All-Conference USA honoree. The following season, Butler received the nod as head coach of the 49ers. The Early Days A native of Mt. Juliet, Tenn., Butler enjoyed a stellar prep career at Mt. Juliet High School, where she tallied over 1,400 points. Butler went on to a standout playing career at the University of Florida. During her junior and senior seasons, she led the Gators to the first two NCAA Tournament appearances in program history. A three-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll, she was voted a finalist on the CoSIDA Academic All-America District Team. Butler completed her Gator career ranked second on the program s all-time assists list with 401. During her tenure with the Gators, Butler helped the team to 73 victories and 21 SEC wins, in addition to serving as captain during her senior season.
