TOUGH STRETCH The Big Ten schedule is always challenging and the Cats face two opponents in the next three games that are atop the conference, beginning with today s game against No. 25 Michigan. The Wolverines are 3-0 in the standings and tie with Purdue and Penn State for the Big Ten lead. Northwestern plays the Boilermakers, who are ranked No. 12 in the AP poll and No. 11 in the USA Today Coaches Poll, next Thursday in West Lafayette, Ind. RECORD-SETTERS With her 14 points last Thursday at Illinois, senior forward Kendall Hackney moved into sole possession of 10th on the NU career scoring list. Hackney has 1,367 career points and is now chasing Amy Prichard ( ), who is in ninth with 1,533 career points. Hackney also played her 112th career game against Illinois, which ties for 10th all-time. Hackney and senior forward/center Dannielle Diamant both rank in the top 10 all-time in blocks. Diamant s 73 swats ties for sixth, while Hackney is close behind with 71 to rank eighth. CATS ON THE BLOCK Northwestern continues to lead the Big Ten in blocks, averaging 6.2 per contest, and much of this is thanks to the NU trio of freshman forward Lauren Douglas, senior forward/center Dannielle Diamant and sophomore forward Alex Cohen. All three rank in the top 15 with Douglas s 1.8 blocks per game ranking sixth to lead the team. Diamant is close behind at 1.5 blocks per game to rank seventh and Cohen s 0.9 per game is 15th. Douglas is the only freshman in the conference to rank in the top 15 in blocks and her six blocks against Hofstra ties for the second-highest single-game total in the conference this year. 3 NORTHWESTERN GAME NOTES OPPONENT PROFILE: MICHIGAN Record: 14-2, 3-0 B1G All-Time Series Record: NU leads Of Note: Michigan is coming off a win at home against Wisconsin last Sunday. Senior guard Jenny Ryan had nine points over the final minute of the game and scored a career-high 19 points. Michigan has won nine games in a row, their longest winning streak since 2002, and is currently ranked No. 25 in the latest AP poll and receiving votes in the USA Today Coaches Poll. This is the first time in program history that Michigan has gone 3-0 in the conference. So far the Wolverines are 9-1 with their starting lineup of Nya Jordan, Rachel Sheffer, Nicole Elmblad, Jenny Ryan and Kate Thompson. This is head coach Kim Barnes Arico s first season with the Wolverines, having previously spent 10 seasons coaching at St. John s. She led her team to four NCAA Tournament appearances. CLOSE CALLS NU opened its Big Ten schedule on the road against the highest-ranked team in the conference, No. 8 Penn State. Penn State, who was ranked No. 9 at the time, was the second top-10 opponent Northwestern has faced this year, also playing then-no. 9 Cal on Dec. 17. The Wildcats played both ranked foes close, losing by just six points (71-65) to the Bears. Cal came into its game vs. NU defeating its opponents by an average of 24.4 points per game. The four-point PSU victory against NU was the slimmest margin of victory all season for the Nittany Lions. VICTORY VS. CHICAGO STATE Northwestern s 44-point victory over Chicago State (82-38) was the largest margin of victory in the Joe McKeown era and ties for the largest since The Wildcats defeated Eastern Illinois by 47 points (104-57) at home on Jan. 4, 1993 and also had a 44-point victory over Morgan State (82-38) at home on Dec. 6, The 38 points scored by Chicago State were just one off the record for an opponent low in the Joe McKeown era. The Wildcats held Dartmouth to just 37 points on Nov. 12, 2010, which is the least amount of points scored by an NU opponent in the McKeown era. BLOCK PARTY Lauren Douglas had a block party against Hofstra, swatting a careerhigh six blocks. Five of her six blocks came in the first half as her six blocks tie for seventh in NU single-game history. Douglas also had a five-block performance against Howard, which was just her third game at Northwestern. TRIPLE DOUBLE-DOUBLE Northwestern posted an interesting stat in its victory over Yale with three Wildcats recording double-doubles. Kendall Hackney and Dannielle Diamant each scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds while freshman forward Lauren Douglas had her second career double-double, finishing with 12 points and 10 rebounds. A fourth player, Karly Roser, was close to a double-double, tallying 11 points and seven assists. In total, NU players have combined for 10 double-doubles so far this season: vs. UT-Martin D. Diamant 16 points 11 rebounds vs. Central Michigan L. Douglas 20 points 10 rebounds vs. Yale L. Douglas 12 points 10 rebounds K. Hackney 20 points 10 rebounds D. Roser 11 points 10 assists at No. 9 Penn State K. Hackney 12 points 11 rebounds NO LOSS NOVEMBER Northwestern went a perfect 6-0 in the month of November and was one of just two Big Ten teams to go undefeated for the month. Michigan State also posted a 6-0 record in the first month of the season. The Wildcats have posted a 24-6 record in the month of November during the Joe McKeown era, including a 22-2 mark in the last four years during the first month of the season. Here s a breakdown of NU s November record under McKeown: NORTHWESTERN HEAD COACH JOE MCKEOWN FIFTH SEASON AT NU In just his first four seasons in Evanston, McKeown has transformed the culture of the women s basketball program. The Wildcats entered the campaign following the best back-to-back seasons in nearly 15 years. Combined, the and campaigns yielded 37 victories, two postseason appearances and milestone wins over nationally-renown Ohio State, LSU and DePaul. On the individual level, marked the first time a Wildcat was selected in the WNBA draft as Amy Jaeschke was selected as the 27th pick overall by the Chicago Sky. Jaeschke turned in not only one of the best seasons in Wildcat annals, but also one of the most storied careers. In the Northwestern record books, she finished her career ranked first in blocks and second in scoring and in rebounding. Jaeschke also was tabbed an Associated Press honorable mention All-American, marking the first time since 1998 that a Wildcat appeared on the prestigious list. Northwestern s improvement from (7-23) to (18-15) was tied for the 10th best turnaround in the nation and ranked fourth among BCS schools. In winning percentage comparison, the Wildcats above-.500 mark (.545) was a 31.2 percent improvement from last season. The success yielded NU s first postseason appearance in 13 years and a ticket to the WNIT, which led to two victories and a trip to the event s round of 16. MCKEOWN RECORDS AT NORTHWESTERN McKeown joined the Wildcats following 19 years as the head coach at George Washington University, where he became one of the most respected names in women s college basketball. During the season, McKeown became the 34th head coach in Division I history to pass the 500-victory mark. He brought 509 career victories, a total which ranked 21st on the active Division I list, to Evanston. **McKeown s complete bio can be found on NUsports.com 3 Season Overall B1G Total
