11 POSTSEASON RESULTS NU s run in the 2014 WNIT marked the 13th postseason berth in Northwestern women s basketball history with the Wildcats compiling a mark in postseason tournaments. The Wildcats advanced to the third round of the 2014 WNIT before dropping a heartbreaker to Indiana on the Hoosiers home court on March 27, In the first two rounds, NU defeated Ball State and IUPUI at Welsh-Ryan Arena. The Wildcats advanced to postseason play in back-to-back seasons during the and seasons, something that hasn t been accomplished since In , NU defeated Creighton before falling to Alabama in a heartbreaker, 72-70, at Welsh-Ryan Arena. In Northwestern reached the postseason for the first time in 16 seasons, earning a berth in the WNIT and defeating A-10 opponents Duquesne and St. Bonaventure before falling to Michigan in Ann Arbor in the round of 16. In 1997, NU was the 12th-seed in the NCAA East Region, and led 16thranked George Washington at halftime, before dropping a decision to the Colonials, who at the time were coached by Joe McKeown. NU qualified for the national AIAW tournament three straight seasons ( , and ). NU also played in the inaugural women s NCAA postseason tournament following the season. During the tenure of head coach Don Perrelli, the Wildcats earned six postseason berths, five to the NCAA tournament and one National Women s Invitational Tournament bid. Northwestern s first NCAA appearance under Perrelli came in 1986, when the Cats knocked off Kansas State in overtime, It was the first NCAA victory for Northwestern. NU advanced to the second round, where the Wildcats lost at Louisiana Tech. NU returned to the Big Dance in 1990 and 1991 following backto-back 20-win seasons. The Wildcats lost to South Carolina in 1990 but rebounded the following year to win their first-round matchup against Head coach JOE McKEOWN led the Wildcats to back-to-back postseason appearances in 2010 and 2011 for the Washington State.
