Sunday is Senior Day and the Wildcats will recognize seniors Dannielle Diamant, Kendall Hackney, Inesha Hale and Kate Popovec for their contributions to the program over the course of the last four seasons. This is the final test for the Wildcats before they head to the 2013 Big Ten Tournament, which runs March 7-10 at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates, Ill. LAST TIME OUT Northwestern once again clawed its way back from a double-digit deficit, but was unable to pick up a win its final road game of the season as Michigan secured the victory at the Crisler Center. NU trailed by 11 late in the second half and a 3-pointer by Maggie Lyon found the Cats down just one with 1:54 left. Lyon extended her double-digit scoring streak to 11 games with a game-high 18 points, including a career-high tying four 3-pointers. She also tied her career-high with seven rebounds. Senior forward Kendall Hackney chipped in 13 points. Michigan s Rachel Sheffer led her squad with 17 points while Nya Jordan had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. In the second half, the Wolverines went on an 11-2 run to take their largest lead of the game at with 9:34 remaining. Northwestern clawed its way back, going on a 15-5 run to trail by just one (48-47) with 1:54 remaining after Lyon nailed her fourth 3-pointer of the game. Michigan missed a shot out of the timeout and NU had the chance to go on top but could not convert. Michigan then took the three-point lead at with 31 seconds remaining as Nicole Elmblad scored with the shot clock winding down. THANK YOU SENIORS Northwestern will recognize its senior class before Sunday s game and this group of seniors has amassed 64 wins over the last four years making them the winningest group of Wildcats since Guard Inesha Hale was a key contributor off the bench for NU, playing 53 games the last four years. Forward Kate Popovec joined the team during the season after starting her collegiate career at Pittsburgh and has been another reliable player off the bench for the Cats the last two years. Forward/center Dannielle Diamant has played more than 100 games for the Wildcats, scoring 900+ points and grabbing 500+ rebounds while receiving All-Big Ten honors in Forward Kendall Hackney will leave the NU program with her name cemented in the record books as the school s leader for games played and she ranks in the top 10 in NU history for points, rebounds, blocks and 3-point field goals. POPOVEC SELECTED FOR WBCA SO YOU WANT TO BE A COACH CLASS Northwestern senior forward Kate Popovec was selected to participate in the 11th annual WBCA So You Want To Be A Coach program. Each member will participate in the three-day workshop held April 5-7 in conjunction with the WBCA National Convention in New Orleans. Popovec is currently enrolled in graduate school at Northwestern and is pursuing her Master s in Sports Administration. The objectives of the So program are to increase the understanding and application of skills necessary to secure coaching positions in women s basketball, increase the understanding and awareness of competencies necessary for success in coaching, introduce female basketball players to coaches and administrators and raise awareness of the existing talent pool of female basketball players who have a passion and interest in coaching the game of women s basketball. KEEPING IT CLOSE IN CONFERENCE Northwestern has been close in a majority of its games against Big Ten foes this season as the Wildcats have seven losses decided by seven points or less during the conference season. On Thursday, NU came back from 11 points down and cut the deficit to one with less than two minutes remaining, but dropped a five-point decision at Michigan. 3 NORTHWESTERN GAME NOTES Thursday s game at Michigan (55-50), vs. Ohio State (59-52), vs. Nebraska (55-50), at No. 9/9 Penn State (73-69), at Indiana (68-64), at No. 15/13 Purdue (77-73) and vs. Michigan State (67-62). The number of close losses jumps to eight when you include NU s game vs. then-no. 9 California in the nonconference season (71-65). DOUBLE-DIGIT STREAK CONTINUES Freshman forward Maggie Lyon had a game-high 18 points at Michigan, marking the 11th straight contest with her scoring in double figures. That ties for the fourth longest active streak in the Big Ten. Lyon is averaging 13.5 points over the last 10 games and has tallied double-digits in 19 of the 23 games she s played this season. IRONWOMEN Four Wildcats have played in every single game this season and three of those players have started every game. Senior forward Kendall Hackney has never missed a game in her Wildcat career, starting all 28 contests this season, while freshman forward Lauren Douglas and sophomore guard Karly Roser have also been in the starting lineup for all 28 games. Roser has started every game since her freshman season, playing in 58 games for the Cats. Sophomore forward Alex Cohen has provided a consistent presence off the bench, playing in all 28 games. As a freshman, Cohen played 27 of 30 games during the season. ROARING LYON Freshman forward Maggie Lyon has upped her game in the last five contests, tallying numbers above her season averages. Her 14.4 ppg in the last five is tops on the team along with her.519 shooting percentage, including an impressive.452 from 3-point range. Lyon has only been to the charity stripe twice since Feb. 3 with her two free throws coming at Michigan on Thursday. This is the fourth Big Ten Freshman of the Week award for Lyon and sixth overall for Northwestern freshmen. Lyon earned this week s award after averaging 12.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.5 steals in NU s two contests last week. She was an impressive 52.6 percent from the field including 44.4 percent from 3-point range. NU freshmen have now captured six of the Big Ten s 16 weekly awards this season. Lyon has won the Big Ten Freshman of the Week award each week since Feb. 12 and this is her fourth accolade of the season after being honored on Dec. 10. Freshman forward Lauren Douglas was also named Big Ten Freshman of the Week twice in the first three weeks of the season. NEARING TRIPLE-DOUBLE TERRITORY Against Wisconsin, sophomore guard Karly Roser came close to recording her first career triple-double. She registered a team-best nine rebounds and nine assists to go along with eight points. It was not the first time this season that the Hamilton, Ontario, native came close to a triple-double. In the first game of the year vs. UT-Martin, Roser had 11 assists, two off her career-high of 13 set during her freshman campaign, to go along with nine points and seven rebounds. She then came close again vs. Loyola (11/25) with 13 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists. Roser has two double-doubles this season and four for her career. RISING ROSER Sophomore guard Karly Roser ranks second in the conference in assists (6.4). She currently has 179 assists, which has already surpassed her entire assist total from of 142. With her four assists at Michigan, Roser moved into ninth in NU single-season history. Six more dimes would put her at 185 to tie her for eighth with Amber DeWall ( ). The Hamilton, Ontario native, has helped the Cats rank highly in the assist category as their 15.5 dimes per game are third in the Big Ten while the 14.8 assists per game in Big Ten contests are second. SWAT CITY Freshman forward Lauren Douglas has emerged as one of the leading shotblockers in the Big Ten. She swatted five vs. Ohio State, which was one off her career-high of six (ties for seventh in NU single-game history), and marked the third time this season she s had five-or-more blocks. Douglas currently has 47 blocks on the year, which ranks ninth in NU single-season history. One more block would tie her for eighth in single-season history. She currently ranks sixth in the Big Ten, averaging 1.7 blocks per game, and is the only freshman to rank among the top-15. The Cincinnatio, Ohio native has never missed a game in her Wildcat career, playing 124 career games. She broke Laura Augustyniak s previous record of 122 games played ( ). Hackney is currently on a stretch of 95-straight appearances in the NU starting lineup and has 112 total starts. Hackney is close to reaching another milestone as she needs four more points to move into a tie for ninth in all-time scoring. She has 1,529 career points to rank 10th and four more would tie her for ninth with Amy Prichard s 1,533 points ( ). Thursday at Michigan, Hackney grabbed six rebounds to move into sixth place in NU history with 690 career rebounds. WILDCATS+20=WIN Northwestern is 6-1 when they have a player finish with 20+ points. Kendall Hackney had the ninth 20+-point outing of the year for NU, scoring 20 at Minnesota. Bold indicates NU opponent 4 MCKEOWN INKS STELLAR RECRUITING CLASS Head Coach Joe McKeown announced on Nov. 15 the signing of four players to National Letters of Intent to enroll at Northwestern University and compete for the women s basketball program beginning in the fall of The Wildcats will welcome forward Nia Coffey (Minneapolis, Minn./Hopkins), guard Ashley Deary (Flower Mound, Tex./Flower Mound), guard Christen Inman (Katy, Tex./Seven Lakes) and center Allie Tuttle (Cary, N.C./ Panther Creek). The four-player class was ranked No. 2 in the Big Ten, and No. 22 in the nation, by a national recruiting publication. Coffey, a 6-foot-1 forward from Minneapolis, was ranked as the No. 24 prospect in the country and No. 8 at her position by ESPN. The same outlet rated Inman, a 5-foot-9 Texan hailing from the Houston suburb of Katy, as the 15th-best guard in the nation. The 6-foot-4 Tuttle averaged 15.1 points per game last year to lead the Panther Creek Catamounts in scoring. Deary, a 5-foot-4 floor general, averaged 18 points, four assists, five steals and four rebounds per game last season at Texas Flower Mound High School.

The two rank No. 1 and No. 2 in scoring amongst freshmen with Lyon s 12.9 points per game leading and Douglas is right behind at 9.6 points per game. These two are also leading the Big Ten freshmen in rebounding, but this time it s Douglas at 4.6 rpg that paves the way and Lyon s 4.0 is No. 2 amongst freshmen. Lyon s 1.52 steals per game are also tops amongst freshmen while Douglas averages 1.21 steals per game to rank fourth. Douglas is the leading shot-blocker amongst freshmen at 1.68 bpg (No. 2 averages 0.61) and Lyon has the most 3-pt FGs at 51. DIAMANT DOMINATES GLASS Senior forward/center Dannielle Diamant grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds vs. Nebraska on Feb. 7. After just three rebounds in the first half, Diamant had 11 in the second to record her team-leading seventh game of the season with 10+ rebounds. Her 14 rebounds were the most by an NU player since Amy Jaeschke had 17 rebounds vs. Central Michigan on Dec. 11, Diamant, who recently surpassed the 550-rebound mark, is averaging a career-high 7.7 rebounds per game, which ranks seventh in the Big Ten. UPCOMING MILESTONES Kendall Hackney reached the 1,500-point milestone on Feb. 20 against Michigan State and needs four more points to tie her for ninth in all-time scoring with Amy Prichard, who had 1,533 points from Dannielle Diamant recently surpassed the 900-point milestone and currently has 944 points. Roser 350 assists LONG-RANGE LYON Freshman forward Maggie Lyon drained a career-high tying four 3-pointers at Michigan, marking the 17th time this season the Wilmette, Ill., native has had at least two 3-pointers in a game. NU tends to find results when Lyon hits from long-range as the Cats are 11-6 when she scores two-or-more 3-pointers in a game, and are 6-3 when she drains at least three 3-pointers. Lyon is averaging point FGs per game, which ranks seventh in the conference. She is the only freshman in the Big Ten to rank in the top 15 in 3-point FG made. TAYLOR TIME It was a long time coming, but junior guard La Terria Taylor finally made her Wildcat debut on Feb. 10 vs. Ohio State. The Chicago, Ill., native has been hampered by injuries during her first three seasons with the Cats and was cleared to play prior to the Nebraska game (2/7). She suited up for the Nebraska contest but did not see her first action on the court until late in the first half on Feb. 10 vs. OSU and again played in the second half. Taylor has played in five games so far this season. Coming out of high school, Taylor was a highly-ranked recruit, earning allstate and all-conference honors at Von Steuben H.S., and she will provide more depth for the Wildcat bench now that she is cleared to play. CLOSE CALLS Northwestern has been competitive against some of the best teams in the NORTHWESTERN HEAD COACH JOE MCKEOWN FIFTH SEASON AT NU In just his first four seasons in Evanston, McKeown has transformed the culture of the women s basketball program. The Wildcats entered the campaign following the best back-to-back seasons in nearly 15 years. Combined, the and campaigns yielded 37 victories, two postseason appearances and milestone wins over nationally-renown Ohio State, LSU and DePaul. On the individual level, marked the first time a Wildcat was selected in the WNBA draft as Amy Jaeschke was selected as the 27th pick overall by the Chicago Sky. Jaeschke turned in not only one of the best seasons in Wildcat annals, but also one of the most storied careers. In the Northwestern record books, she finished her career ranked first in blocks and second in scoring and in rebounding. Jaeschke also was tabbed an Associated Press honorable mention All-American, marking the first time since 1998 that a Wildcat appeared on the prestigious list. Northwestern s improvement from (7-23) to (18-15) was tied for the 10th best turnaround in the nation and ranked fourth among BCS schools. In winning percentage comparison, the Wildcats above-.500 mark (.545) was a 31.2 percent improvement from last season. The success yielded NU s first postseason appearance in 13 years and a ticket to the WNIT, which led to two victories and a trip to the event s round of 16. MCKEOWN RECORDS AT NORTHWESTERN McKeown joined the Wildcats following 19 years as the head coach at George Washington University, where he became one of the most respected names in women s college basketball. During the season, McKeown became the 34th head coach in Division I history to pass the 500-victory mark. NU trailed by as many as 19 points in the second half against No. 13 Purdue and came within two points with less than 30 seconds to play, but couldn t escape West Lafayette with the victory. NU opened its Big Ten schedule on the road against the highest-ranked team in the conference, Penn State, who was ranked No. 9 at the time, and also played then-no. 9 Cal on Dec. 17. The Wildcats played both ranked foes close, losing by just six points (71-65) to the Bears and by four to Penn State (73-69). Cal came into its game vs. NU defeating its opponents by an average of 24.4 points per game. HACKNEY TABBED CAPITAL ONE ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT FOR THIRD YEAR Senior forward Kendall Hackney received Capital One Academic All-District accolades for the third time in her Wildcat career. A communications studies major and two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree, she was selected as one of the District 5 winners by a vote of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Student-athletes with sophomore athletic and academic standing that carry a 3.3 GPA or better are eligible for this distinction. Hackney has received the award every year since her sophomore season. HIGH MARKS FOR HACKNEY As NU s leading scorer, Kendall Hackney has paced the Wildcats in scoring in 11 games this year. Hackney has always scored in bunches for Northwestern, recording double-figures in 81 of the 124 games (or 65.3 percent of her games played). All three rank in the top 15 with Douglas s 1.7 blocks per game ranking sixth to lead the team. Diamant is close behind at 1.4 blocks per game to rank seventh and Cohen s 0.8 per game is 14th. Douglas is the only freshman in the conference to rank in the top 15 in blocks. As a team, Northwestern has recorded three or more blocks in 25 of the 28 games so far this season and five or more in 19 games. SCOUTING IOWA Record: 18-11, 7-8 B1G All-Time Series Record: Iowa leads Of Note: Northwestern looks for its first season sweep of Iowa since the season. The Wildcats edged the Hawkeyes on a buzzerbeater layup by guard Karly Roser Feb. 3 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Iowa s loss to Northwestern was in the midst of a five game losing streak that was snapped at Purdue, 72-52, on Feb. 17. The Hawkeyes have found success recently and head into Sunday s contest as winners of two of their last three, defeating Indiana in their regular-season home finale Thursday. Morgan Johnson paces the Hawkeyes in points (14.9 ppg) and rebounds (7.5 rpg). Sunday s game will feature two of the best point guards in the Big Ten as Iowa s Samantha Logic (6.6 assists per game) and NU s Roser (6.4) rank No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, in the conference for assists. Northwestern posted an interesting stat in its victory over Yale with three Wildcats recording double-doubles. Kendall Hackney and Dannielle Diamant each scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds while freshman forward Lauren Douglas had her second career double-double, finishing with 12 points and 10 rebounds. A fourth player, Karly Roser, was close to a double-double, tallying 11 points and seven assists. In total, NU players have combined for 11 double-doubles so far this season: vs. UT-Martin D. INDIANA Northwestern s defense set a few marks against Indiana on Jan. 28 as IU s 39 points were the lowest point total for a Big Ten opponent since Feb. 12, That game also featured Indiana, as NU defeated the Hoosiers IU was held to just 21.0 percent from the field, which is the lowest field goal percentage for an NU opponent since Nov. 20, 2009, when SIUE shot 19.4 percent on 12-of-62 from the field. NOTABLE VICTORY VS. CHICAGO STATE Northwestern s 44-point victory over Chicago State (82-38) was the largest margin of victory in the Joe McKeown era and ties for the largest since The Wildcats defeated Eastern Illinois by 47 points (104-57) at home on Jan. 4, 1993 and also had a 44-point victory over Morgan State (82-38) at home on Dec. 6, The 38 points scored by Chicago State were just one off the record for an opponent low in the Joe McKeown era. The Wildcats held Dartmouth to just 37 points on Nov. 12, 2010, which is the least amount of points scored by an NU opponent in the McKeown era. NO LOSS NOVEMBER Northwestern went a perfect 6-0 in the month of November and was one of just two Big Ten teams to go undefeated for the month. Michigan State also posted a 6-0 record in the first month of the season. The Wildcats have posted a 24-6 record in the month of November during the Joe McKeown era, including a 22-2 mark in the last four years during the first month of the season. Here s a breakdown of NU s November record under McKeown: : : : : : 2-4 BACK-TO-BACK HONORS FOR LYON For the second consecutive week, and the third time overall this season, Wildcats rookie Maggie Lyon (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) was named the Big Ten Freshman Of The Week, on Feb. 19. In NU s road win over the Minnesota Golden Gophers at Williams Arena, Lyon scored seven of the Wildcats first nine points en route to 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field, to go along with four assists and three rebounds. DYNAMIC DUO Freshmen forwards Maggie Lyon and Lauren Douglas have formed quite the dynamic duo for the Cats this season, especially in NU s victory at Boston College during the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. The two combined for 34 of Northwestern s 67 points at BC. Lyon played a key role in NU s comeback against the Eagles, scoring eight points, including two 3-pointers, in the final six minutes. TRIPLE DOUBLE-DOUBLE 6 MAGGIE LYON TABBED B1G FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK - FEB. 12 Maggie Lyon earned her second Big Ten Freshman of the Week award on Feb. 12 after contributing heavily for the Wildcats vs. Nebraska and Ohio State, averaging 13.0 points and 4.0 rebounds per game. Against Nebraska, Lyon knocked down two key 3-point baskets with under six minutes remaining to spark a Northwestern rally and close the gap to after trailing by as many as 15 points. She scored 12 points in the game,

Against Ohio State, Lyon tied a career-high by making four 3-pointers and led the Wildcats in scoring with 14 points, shooting 50 percent (5-of-10) from the field. Lyon also collected four rebounds, while helping with one assist and one steal. LYON NAMED BIG TEN FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK - DEC. 10 Maggie Lyon filled the stat sheet in NU s two contests against Boston College and DePaul averaging 15.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 1.0 steal per game to earn Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors on Dec. 10. Lyon was a key contributor in Northwestern s comeback victory on the road at Boston College on Nov. 28. She posted 16 points, including two 3-pointers in the final six minutes of the game when NU staged its comeback. Lyon had four of the Wildcats season-high nine 3-pointers and also added six rebounds, four assists and a steal in NU s sixth victory of the season. Coffey, a 6-1 forward from Hopkins High School in Minneapolis, Minn., will play on the East Team. This is the second high school All-America honor for Coffey as she was recently selected to compete in the 2013 WBCA High School All-America Game, which takes place Saturday, April 6, at the New Orleans Arena, the site of the NCAA Women s Final Four. Coffey is the third NU signee under head coach Joe McKeown to receive McDonald s All-America honors. UP NEXT: 2013 BIG TEN TOURNAMENT This year s tournament is close to home for NU, with the games taking place at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates. Competition begins Thursday, March 7 and runs through Sunday, March 10. NU will know its seed and first-round opponent following the conclusion of Sunday s regular-season finale. Lyon once again posted double figures at DePaul, leading the Wildcats with 15 points. She also had a team-high six assists to go along with five rebounds and a steal. DOUGLAS NAMED B1G FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK (AGAIN) Forward Lauren Douglas was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Nov. 26, following her 10.3 points, 5.7 rebounds, 3.0 blocks, 2.3 assists and 2.3 steals per game averages in two NU victories vs. Yale and Loyola. Douglas was named freshman of the week two of the first three weeks of the season, also taking home the award on Nov. 12. MEGHAN MCKEOWN TO MISS REMAINDER OF SEASON Northwestern head women s basketball coach Joe McKeown has announced that junior guard Meghan McKeown (Glencoe, Ill./Loyola Academy) will miss the remainder of the season following hip surgery. Meghan had a season-ending injury and surgery in December. It s been a difficult and a tough loss for our team, but her attitude and determination will help her come back and move forward to next year, Northwestern head coach Joe McKeown said. McKeown played three games this season before being sidelined with the injury. She was one of the key reserves during the campaign, playing all 30 contests and averaging 11.6 minutes per contest. PAIR OF NU SIGNEES RECEIVE WBCA ALL-AMERICA DISTINCTION Two Northwestern incoming freshmen, Nia Coffey (Minneapolis, Minn./ Hopkins) and Christen Inman (Katy, Texas/Seven Lakes) were recognized by the Women s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA). Coffey, a 6-foot-1 forward, will participate in the 2013 WBCA High School All-America Game, Saturday, April 6, at the New Orleans Arena, which is the site of the 2013 NCAA Women s Final Four. Coffey is one of the nation s top 20 high school senior girls basketball players selected for the event and the only Big Ten signee. Inman, a 5-foot-9 guard, was one of 20 players honored with 2013 WBCA High School All-America honorable mention accolades. Tipoff for the 2013 WBCA High School All-America Game is set for 4:30 p.m. CT on April 6. For the fourth consecutive year, the game will be played on the official NCAA Women s Final Four court and the 20 players will be divided into two 10-player teams for the game, which will be played according to NCAA rules. Ashley Deary (5-foot-4 guard, Flower Mound, Texas/Flower Mound) and Allie Tuttle (6-foot-4 forward, Cary, N.C./Panther Creek) round out head coach Joe McKeown s recruiting class. NU SIGNEE NIA COFFEY TABBED MCDONALD S ALL-AMERICAN Northwestern incoming freshman Nia Coffey was one of 24 players selected to compete at the 2013 McDonald s All-American Game.
