3 THE OPENING TIP The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team, sitting atop the Mid- American Conference standings early in the second half of the league schedule, concludes a brief, two-game homestand with a Saturday (Feb. 4) contest... the Falcons of head coach Curt Miller, looking to extend several winning streaks and reverse a losing streak (if one game can be considered a 'streak'), face Western Michigan University, with tipoff scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at the brand-new Stroh Center. STATEMENT RE: BGSU HEAD COACH CURT MILLER BGSU women's basketball coach Curt Miller did not travel with the team to Central Michigan after it was determined by doctors Thursday afternoon, Jan. 26, that he suffered a mild stroke late in his team's win over Eastern Michigan on Sunday, Jan. 22. This has been a wake-up call for me and I have already begun the process of finding a healthier balance, Miller said. I am passionate about coaching and I look forward to my return soon. I, along with the rest of our coaches and players, would like to thank the community for its ongoing support of our program. It has not been determined when Miller will return to the sidelines. The BGSU Department of Athletics asks all members of the media to please respect Miller's privacy as he recuperates. Our first priority is Curt s health, Director of Athletics Greg Christopher said. Although he has been cleared to continue coaching, we all felt it was best to take a step back right now. We fully expect Curt to return to the bench soon. Until then, everyone involved with our department and the women s basketball program will support Curt and our student-athletes. Associate Head Coach Jennifer Roos is leading the program in his absence, and served as acting head coach in the Central Michigan (Jan. 28) and Northern Illinois (Feb. 1) games. QUICK HITS The Falcons are coming off a win over Northern Illinois on Wednesday night (Feb. 1) at the Stroh Center... senior Jessica Slagle led the Falcons in scoring for the third consecutive game, with 14 points, while freshman Logan Pastor had 12 points, the highest total of her young career. BGSU is looking to extend a number of impressive winning streaks... the Falcons have won 12 consecutive games, including all nine MAC games this season to date... additionally, BG has won 11 games in a row at the Stroh Center... but, the Brown and Orange lost the last time the team faced Western Michigan. BGSU has won 17 consecutive MAC regular-season games, and the Falcons have captured 20-straight games against conference foes, including regular-season and tournament contests... BG won the first three MAC games last season, lost three of the next five matches, then won eight-straight games to end the regular season, following that up with three more victories in downtown Cleveland en route to the MAC Tournament title. Slagle is the reigning MAC Player of the Week, having earned the honor on Monday afternoon (Jan. 30)... it marks the third consecutive week, the fourth time in the last five weeks and the fifth time this season that a BGSU player has garnered MAC P-O-W honors. BG, after beginning the season with a pair of losses, has won 19 of the last 20 games... the Falcons reeled off a seven-game win streak, suffered a two-point loss at Creighton (Dec. 18), and have won 12 consecutive contests since that setback. The Falcons' current win streak is BGSU's seventh of 10 games or more since the beginning of the season... the other MAC teams have combined for three such streaks in during that time... Ball State had two of those double-digit win streaks... Miami had the third, with a 10-game streak that was snapped by the Falcons on Jan. 19. Overall, the current streak is the Falcons' 11th double-digit win streak in school history... the complete list can be found later in these notes. The Falcons need one more win to reach 20 for the season... BGSU has won 20 games 16 times in program history, the most of any MAC program... and, the season was the eighth consecutive year that BG posted 20 or more wins, also a MAC record for consecutive seasons of such sustained success. BGSU finished the month of January with a perfect 8-0 record... it is the third time in the last two years, and the eighth time since the beginning of the season, that the Falcons have gone undefeated over an entire month. Under the new MAC Tournament format, the top-four seeds will receive multiple byes in the third and fourth seeds will earn berths in the quarterfinals, with seeds one and two being placed directly into the semifinal round... currently, BGSU sits atop the MAC... three teams Eastern Michigan, Miami and Toledo are two games back with 7-2 records... Kent State and Central Michigan, currently sitting in the fifth and sixth spots, respectively, are five games back... both the Golden Flashes and the Chippewas are 4-5 in league action heading into Saturday's games. The campaign marks the third season in a row that the Falcons have had two win streaks of at least seven games... last season, BG had a 15-game win streak as well as an 11-game streak... two years ago, the Falcons had a pair of eight-game streaks... BGSU had only one such streak in but, that streak lasted a school-record 25 games from late November into early March. The Stroh Center will host the first and second rounds of the 2012 NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship... the first-round games are set for Sunday, March 18, with the second-round contest scheduled for Tuesday, March for much more information, or to order tickets, log on to the web at BGSUFalcons.com. BGSU has an all-time record of (.711) in MAC regular-season contests, for the most wins and highest winning pct. of all league institutions... and, BGSU leads the series with all 11 MAC foes, making the Falcons the only team in the league, obviously, with a winning series record against every other school. BGSU AT THE STROH The Falcons have a record of 11-1 in games played at the Stroh Center... the firstever regular-season game in the state-of-the-art facility was a narrow, loss to nationally-ranked Purdue on Nov the Boilermakers scored with 13.5 seconds left, and a last-second three-point try by BG bounced off the iron... since then, however, the Falcons have posted 11-straight home victories, by an average of 22.6 points per game... currently, BGSU is averaging 71.1 points per game at home, and the Falcons have forced no fewer than 246 opponent turnovers (20.5 per game)... BG has a turnover margin of +5.8 at home... more information about the Falcons' games in the Stroh Center can be found on page 32 of these notes. HOME IS (USUALLY) WHERE THE WINS ARE The Falcons enjoyed an incredible home-court advantage at venerable Anderson Arena, but Curt Miller's club appears to be beginning a new tradition of success at the Stroh Center... the win over Northern Illinois (Feb. 1) gives BG an 11-1 home record this year... after losing by just one point to nationally-ranked Purdue in the home opener, BGSU has reeled off 11-straight wins at the Stroh. The 11-1 mark at the new building comes after the Falcons went (74.2%) in Anderson Arena during the team's tenure there... the record was even better during MAC play, as the Falcons had a league mark of (78.0%) at "The House That Roars" through the years. WE MUST PROTECT THIS HOUSE (LIKE WE PROTECTED THE OLD ONE) BGSU ended the Anderson Arena Era on a pretty good run... the Falcons won 46 of the final 48 games played in "The House That Roars"... BGSU saw a 23-game home winning streak snapped with a one-point loss to Toledo last January 26, then won the final four games in the building by an average of 18.5 points per game... the Falcons' only other loss in the final 48 contests in the old barn came to Indiana in the third round of the 2009 WNIT... BG had won 19-straight home games before Page 10 Game 23 Falcons vs. Western Michigan February 4, 2012

11 losing to IU, then starting the 23-game home streak of the Falcons' 46 wins in that overall span came by double digits. ANDERSON + STROH = SUCCESS BG has enjoyed a great deal of success in home games over the last few years, as evidenced by the three previous notes... when combining the Anderson Arena Era with the inaugural year of the Stroh Center, the Falcons have won 57 of the last 60 home games of those 57 victories, including 10 of this year's 11 home wins, have come by double-digit margins. THE MAC SCHEDULE The season is the seventh utilizing the current MAC scheduling format for women's basketball... each of the 12 schools opens conference action with five intra-divisional games, followed by six cross-divisional games and five more intra-divisional contests to close the regular season... so, BGSU plays five games vs. East Division schools to begin and end the MAC season, with six games vs. the West Division teams in the middle of the league schedule. That group won the regular-season and tourney titles and became BG's first NCAA-bound team in 11 years. That came on the heels of the team's success. Picked to finish sixth (i.e., last) in the West Division, the Falcons finished just a game out of first, and advanced all the way to the championship game of the league tourney. A native of Girard, Pa., Miller began his collegiate coaching career as a volunteer assistant at Kent State, and was an assistant at Cleveland State and Syracuse. He was the associate head coach at Colorado State under Tom Collen (a BGSU graduate and currently the head coach at Arkansas), helping the Rams to a combined mark in his three years there. The CSU team went 33-3 and advanced to the "Sweet Sixteen." Miller received his Bachelor of Arts degree in physical education and business administration from Baldwin-Wallace in He has taken courses toward a Master of Arts degree in sports administration at Kent State.
