No. 20/17 DePaul vs. Oklahoma has become the very definition of a basketball shootout. The four times these high-scoring women s basketball programs have met, they combined for 768 points. Who knows what could be on tap when they light up the Lloyd Noble Center scoreboard at 2 p.m. on Sunday. This origin of this crowd-pleasing rivalry was in November of 2006 when coach Doug Bruno s program fell in Normal. The sequel was even better than the original. That was at the outset of March Madness in 2014 when the Blue Demons topped Oklahoma at Durham, N.C. in the highest-scoring game in NCAA women s basketball tournament history. Shootout No. 3 was the most explosive of the series as Amarah Coleman hit a buzzer-beating, three-pointer in overtime for a triumph in November of 2017 at McGrath-Phillips Arena. The home team tied an all-time program record with 19 three-pointers. The most recent matchup was last March at the NCAA First Round in College Station, Texas when the Blue Demons prevailed DePaul (6-3) leads the nation in three-pointers, three-pointers per game and three-point attempts. The Blue Demons are No. 2 in the country in free throw percentage, No. 6 in assists, No. 11 in assists per game, No. 14 in assist-turnover ratio, No. 17 in scoring offense and No. 19 in steals. Ashton Millender is No. 6 in the nation in three-pointers, No. 10 in attempts and No. 13 in three-pointers per game. Kelly Campbell and Chante Stonewall are No. 26 in steals. Millender also leads her team in scoring at 14.2 points a game and is knocking down nearly 40 percent of her three-pointers. Mart'e Grays and Ashton Millender had big comeback seasons after missing significant time in because of injuries. Grays sat out the entire season with a torn Achilles tendon while Millender missed 25 games with a stress reaction. Under coach Doug Bruno, the Blue Demons have won 20 or more in 22 seasons including the last 11 in a row and 15 of 16. Bruno's team plays three regular-season games at Wintrust Arena that began with the marquee showdown on Nov. 17 against defending NCAA champion Notre Dame. Scouting Report: Oklahoma (3-5) opened the season topping Western Kentucky and Northwestern State before losing to USF, UAB, Clemson, New Mexico and Auburn... the Sooners snapped the five-game skid beating Central Arkansas last Wednesday... Taylor Robertson averages 18.4 points a game, Shaina Pellington 16.3, Madi Williams 13.4 with 10.4 rebounds and Jessi Murcer is at 13 points a game... they are averaging 23 turnovers per game. Wintrust Arena to Host BIG EAST, NCAA Tournaments Wintrust Arena in the South Loop will be the home of the BIG EAST Women s Basketball Tournament presented by Jeep for 2019 and 2020 while also hosting the 2019 NCAA Chicago Regional. We are very excited to bring the 2019 BIG EAST Tournament to Wintrust Arena, a spectacular addition to the Chicago sports and entertainment landscape, said BIG EAST Commissioner Val Ackerman. In five years since conference realignment, DePaul has won three tournament titles and five consecutive BIG EAST regular-season titles. For the sixth consecutive year, FS1 and FS2 will provide coverage of the BIG EAST Women s Basketball Tournament. FS2 will air the quarterfinal round on March 10, with games set for noon, 2:30, 6 and 8:30 p.m. (CT). FS1 picks up the remainder of the tournament, with the semifinals on March 11 slated for 3 and 5:30 p.m., and the championship game set to tip off at 7 p.m. on March 12. The BIG EAST Digital Network will air both first-round games on March 9. 6 Doug Bruno s powerful impact on the game he loves resonates across the entire spectrum of women s basketball as not only a highly successful college coach and staunch advocate of academics, but a passionate and undaunted promoter of the sport itself. The former DePaul basketball player is heading into his 33rd season as the head coach at his alma mater. Born and raised in Chicago and a product of Quigley South High School, Bruno has transformed De- Paul women s basketball into a perennial national power. He has guided the Blue Demons to 16 consec utive NCAA Tournament appearances after making the postseason in a feat only the NCAA elite of Connecticut, Notre Dame, Stanford, Tennessee and Oklahoma can also claim. Since his return in 1988, DePaul has won 641 games entering the season, competed in 23 NCAA Tournaments and four Sweet 16s (2006, 2011, 2014, 2016). Win No. 600 made Bruno the fourth active Division I coach to do so at the same school. Bruno has won 708 games as a head coach going into the season, 668 as DePaul s leader. Bruno has worked with athletes at the highest level through his involvement with USA Basket ball. Since 2009, Bruno has been an assistant coach for the USA Women s Basketball Nation al Team. He has helped lead the USA to FIBA World Championships in 2010 and 2014, and to its fifth and sixth straight Olympic gold medals in London in 2012 and again in Rio in Bruno is the only coach to be recognized twice as USA Basketball s Developmental Coach of the Year after leading the U18 team in 2006 and the U19 team in 2007 to gold medals at the FIBA Americas and World Championships. Bruno s influence on the game extends to the WNBA as a consultant to the Chicago Sky pro franchise. The WNBA has drafted 14 DePaul players including Allie Quigley (Chicago Sky). WBCA Academic Top 25 since No. 2 in DePaul won the BIG EAST Team Academic Award nine of the last 10 seasons. Bruno has been conference Coach of the Year numerous times. In 2005, Bruno was selected as Conference USA s Coach of the Decade. The IBCA has named him coach of the Year 22 times. He has been inducted into the DePaul Athletics Hall of Fame, Chicagoland Sports Hall of Fame, IBCA Hall of Fame Italian-American Sports Hall of Fame. Bruno was also awarded the Leonardo Da Vinci Outstanding Achievement in Education Award by the Sons of Italy. He complet ed a two-year term as president of the WBCA beginning in the summer of He was chairman of the WBCA/ State Farm All-Ameri can Committee and is the East Regional repre sentative for the NCAA Division I Tournament selection. He serves on the Women s Basket ball Hall of Fame Committee. He has grown the women s game through his Doug Bruno Girls Basketball Camps and mentored over young athletes. HEAD COACH DOUG BRUNO 33RD YEAR AT DEPAUL He was associate head coach under Gene Sullivan at Loyola and won three conference titles, reaching the NCAA Sweet 16 in Bruno also spent two seasons as coach and player personnel director of the WBL s Chica go Hustle and won a division title in He began his coaching career as an assistant coach in 1973 with Francis Parker boys team and coached St. Vincent de Paul s boys team in He was a three-year letter winner for DePaul and Hall of Fame coach Ray Meyer after playing high school basketball at Quigley South for the legendary Dick Flaiz. Bruno was a two-year starter at DePaul and led the squad in assists. He received his B.A. in English in 1973, and later returned to earn his M.A. in English in Doug and his wife Patty have six sons--- Bryan, Kevin, David, Brendan, Patrick and Bradley and are proud grandparents of 10.
