He used his size down low, while also showing a jumper in helping the Pirates pick up their second win of last season over the Eagles. DTP: DISCIPLINE, TOUGHNESS, PASSION Head coach Edward Joyner Jr. and assistant coach Akeem Miskdeen have developed a new identity and philosophy for the Pirates this season: DTP trying to instill discipline, toughness, and passion into a young and talented team that showed flashes of promise in He helped develop DTP with head coach Edward Joyner Jr., and going forward, the coaching staff looks to use DTP in order to get the Pirates to play the simple game of a basketball aggressively, while simultaneously reaching their full potential on and off the court and never losing sight of their goals. Miskdeen also hopes DTP will be a good tool for teaching important life lessons. PIRATES IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT Since moving up to NCAA Division I competition in 1995, the Pirates have four trips to the NCAA Tournament most recently last season, when Hampton fell in the second round to topseeded Duke. Prior to last season, the Pirates were last in the NCAA Tournament in 2006, when the Pirates fell to Monmouth in the opening round game in Dayton, Ohio. Hampton s most famous trip to the NCAA Div. I Men s Basketball Tournament is also its first; in 2001, the MEAC champion Pirates, coached by Steve Merfeld, upended No. 2 seed Iowa State in Boise, Idaho on a 4-footer from Tarvis Williams with 6.9 seconds left to play. Williams led the Pirates (25-6) with 16 points and 13 rebounds that afternoon, while Marseilles Brown added 14 points and LaSean Howard poured in 10 points. Williams bucket not only gave Hampton a win for the ages and marked just the fourth time in tournament history a No. 15 seed had defeated a No. 2 seed but it also provided one of the tournament s most vivid images: Merfeld, lifted into the air by David Johnson, fists and feet raised into the air. The Pirates would fall in the second round that year to Georgetown Hampton also made the NCAA Tournament in 2002, falling as a No. 15 seed to No. 2 Connecticut in the first round of the East Regional. PENN STATE HEAD COACH PATRICK CHAMBERS Introduced as just the 12th head coach in Nittany Lion basketball history on June 6, 2011, Patrick Chambers quickly energized the Penn State fan base with his passion and enthusiasm and his team s all-out style of play. Described as passionate, energetic, upbeat and dynamic by media in attendance, Chambers first appearance as the leader of Penn State basketball was described as less an introduction than a passionate call to arms by Blue-White Illustrated s Nate Bauer. Chambers wasted little time in spreading that message to his Nittany Lion team and the Penn State fan base far and wide. He traveled 10,500 miles in his first eight days on the job to personally visit with each returning and incoming player and their families (except Sasa Borovnjak in Serbia). He ordered up a pair of golf carts and began making spur-of-the-moment trips around the Penn State campus distributing t-shirts and his infectious energy. He visited amusement parks, pep rallies, student groups, and classes and threw out first pitches. Chambers even went as far as to go behind the counter to serve free Big Macs to students at State College s downtown McDonald s and donned a Penn State football jersey and helmet to fire up the famed Nittanyville student campout prior to the Lion football team s 2011 clash with Alabama. He was seemingly everywhere in his first year on the job, most importantly the recruiting trail, and showed no signs of slowing down despite reconstructive knee surgery in the spring of 2012 that placed him on crutches for nearly two months. On the court, he seized the attention of his team with fast-paced, high-intensity practices and his positive, relentless and direct in-game coaching. He guided junior Tim Frazier to one of the best

7 seasons in Lion history as the 6-1 guard earned first-team All-Big Ten honors after leading the conference in assists and finishing second in scoring and steals. Frazier developed into the team s unquestioned floor leader and set a Penn State season record in assists (198). The youngest of 12 children (nine boys, three girls) from a Philadelphia Irish Catholic family so large it ate dinner in shifts, Chambers route to Penn State was anything but usual and stands as a testament to the values of family, faith and attitude, which he holds dear. It was a path shaped by 2011 Naismith Hall of Fame inductee Herb Magee, Philadelphia high school coaching legend Dan Dougherty and highly successful Villanova coach Jay Wright. It was also shaped by a life altering attack that nearly claimed his life 10 years prior to his accepting the Nittany Lion post. Chambers rise in coaching has been meteoric. He served as a parttime assistant at Episcopal Academy (HS), Director of Operations at Villanova, assistant coach at Villanova, associate head coach on Jay Wright s 2009 NCAA Final Four team and head coach at Boston University in a short seven years prior to leading a Big Ten program. The dizzying pace is reflective of his no holds barred approach to every day. Chambers came to Penn State from Boston University, where in he led the Terriers to the America East Conference Championship and the program s first NCAA Tournament berth since He posted a record in two years in his first head coaching stint at BU. He was the only BU coach in history to earn 20 wins in each of his first two seasons and the fastest to earn a conference championship in program history. The Terriers earned a mark for the second straight year under Chambers in Led by 2011 America East Player-of-the-Year and two-time scoring champion John Holland, BU fell after challenging No. 1 seed Kansas in the Terriers first NCAA Tournament game since Chambers led BU to the semifinals of the College Basketball Invitational in The Terriers won at Oregon State and beat Morehead State in the CBI, marking BU s first post-season wins since BU also posted its first perfect home conference record since Chambers stocked his Boston University teams with Philadelphia talent, including six players from the Philadelphia area in , relying on long standing relationships and his first hand experience in the basketball community in the City of Brotherly Love. He also energized a stagnant basketball fan base at the hockey-centric school. A native of Newtown Square, Pa., Chambers previously played for and coached with two of the nation s most successful college coaches. From , he was a member of Wright s staff at Villanova University, serving as associate head coach in He helped the Wildcats earn four NCAA Sweet 16 appearances and advance to the 2009 NCAA Final Four during his tenure. Chambers played for Magee at Philadelphia University (formerly Philadelphia Textile), helping Magee become college basketball s all-time victories leader (941) and a 2011 Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame inductee. THE BOOK ON HAMPTON SEASON OUTLOOK When the Pirates finished third in the MEAC in , they did so as one of the youngest teams in the conference six freshmen (including the point guard), one sophomore, and two transfers seeing their first action at Hampton last season. The Pirates will come into a year older eight returners in all but thanks to a shift in coaching philosophy, they ll also return tougher and more together than ever. Over the offseason, head coach Edward Joyner Jr. and assistant coach Akeem Miskdeen instilled a philosophy of discipline, toughness, and passion (DTP) in the Pirates. In discipline getting players to do things the right way every time on and off the court Joyner quotes Aristotle: We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence is not just an act; it s a habit. Nothing great, according to Joyner, is ever accomplished without discipline. By giving the Pirates toughness, Joyner and his staff hope they will be able to withstand great strain without tearing or breaking. The Pirates will have to be tough, fighting through adversity physical, mental, and emotional on and off the court. By instilling passion, Joyner and his staff want the Pirates to embrace being student-athletes, in every sense of the term. If the players truly love what they do, that passion will make being disciplined and tough easier. Through DTP, Joyner, coming into his fifth season at the helm, wants a team that plays hard, unselfishly, with confidence, and with passion tenets to build the foundation for a successful basketball program. The idea is to have the Pirates take the simple game of basketball and play it aggressively, while simultaneously reaching their full potential on and off the court. The new philosophy, combined with the experience the Pirates gained in winning nine of their last 13 games last season, could have Hampton primed to win its first conference title since RETURNERS Reigning MEAC Rookie of the Year Deron Powers (So., 5-11, 165, Williamsburg, Va.) leads a group of eight returners, coming off a freshman campaign in which he not only led Hampton in scoring (11.9 ppg) and assists (4.6 apg), but he was the conference s top freshman in both categories. Powers ranked fourth overall in the MEAC in assists, and he was second in the conference in free throw percentage, hitting over 84 percent of his shots from the charity stripe. The Pirates also return top rebounder Du Vaughn Maxwell (Sr., 6-7, 215, Manhattan, N.Y.), who ranked fifth in the MEAC in rebounding last season with 7.2 boards per contest while also ranking second on the team in scoring with 10.4 points a game. Emmanuel Okoroba (r-jr., 6-8, 245, Garland, Texas) was third on the team in scoring (8.3 ppg) and second in rebounding (5.1 rpg) last season, giving the Pirates size in the paint, while Dwight Meikle (r-so., 6-8, 210, Baltimore, Md.) proved effective both inside and out as he averaged 5.8 points per game fifth-best on the team. Ramon Mercado (Sr., 6-4, 205, Hollywood, Fla.) was fourth on the team in scoring last season, averaging 7.9 points per contest, and he was the Pirates top threat from behind the arc, draining 45 3-pointers on the season and shooting at a 27.1 percent clip from distance. Ke Ron Brown (So., 6-3, 215, Savannah, Ga.) stepped up in the second half of last season for the Pirates, finishing the season with averages of 5.7 points and 4.3 rebounds per game. Perhaps his best contribution, though, came on the defensive side of the ball, as Brown led the Pirates and was sixth in the MEAC in steals with 53 averaging 1.7 per contest. Dionte Adams (So., 6-7, 215, Charlotte, N.C.) and Reggie Price (r-so., 6-3, 195, Charlotte, N.C.) also return to the Pirates this season, looking to expand their roles now that they each have a season of Div. I college ball under their belt. NEWCOMERS Even with all the returners, the Pirates will also have a fair amount of new coming into the season, thanks to a handful of newcomers

8 that includes three transfers from other Division I programs two of whom will be available come the spring semester. One such transfer is local product Brian Darden (So., 6-0, 175, Hampton, Va.), who originally played at Radford. Darden averaged 6.6 points per game in his lone season with the Highlanders in In Lawrence Cooks IV (Fr., 6-0, 185, Charlotte, N.C.), the Pirates are once again making use of the Charlotte area four players on the Pirates roster hail from that city. Also making their Hampton debuts this season will be Charles Wilson-Fisher (Fr., 6-9, 205, Alpharetta, Ga.), Gregory Hayden (Fr., 5-7, 160, Dallas, Texas), and Phillip Reed (Fr., 6-10, 210, Oxnard, Calif.) Sall has already redshirted for the Pirates. Though they won t be available until after the fall semester, transfers Breon Key (So., 6-2, 185, Hampton, Va.) and Jervon Pressley (So. 6-8, 2350, Charlotte, N.C.) will bring with them a wealth of Div. I experience; Key first played at Old Dominion as a reserve, while Pressley was at Towson, where he started as a true freshman. 9 Edward Joyner, Jr. Head Coach Fifth Season Johnson C. Smith 95 Edward Joyner Jr. is entering his fifth year as head coach of the Hampton University men s basketball program, looking to return to the success to which he helped lead the program in In four seasons at the helm, Joyner is With the help of assistant coach Akeem Miskdeen, Joyner has instilled a new philosophy leading into the season. Faced with a young but talented team, Joyner is looking to instill a philosophy of discipline, toughness, and passion (DTP) in the Pirates. In discipline getting players to do things the right way every time on and off the court Joyner quotes Aristotle: We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence is not just an act; it s a habit. Powers, who was named the MEAC Rookie of the Year after leading the Pirates in both scoring and assists last season. Powers was second in the MEAC in free throw percentage and fourth in assists. Powers was also named a Mid-Major Freshman All- American by CollegeInsider.com. The Pirates struggled to a record in , though Hampton did advance to the semifinals of the MEAC Tournament in trying to defend their crown. Along the way, the Pirates upset No. 1 seed Savannah State in the quarterfinal round That win was also the 50th in Joyner s young coaching career. Darrion Pellum, who was a senior in , led the team and the MEAC in scoring, earning First Team All-MEAC honors after averaging 18.3 points per game. Pellum was also named VaSID First Team All-State. Joyner led the Pirates to the 2011 MEAC Tournament championship in his second season, guiding Hampton to a 24-9 record marking the first time the Pirates won 20 games since the season. The Pirates were the No. 2 seed in the MEAC Tournament, defeating Morgan State in the championship game to win the tournament and win the automatic NCAA bid for the first time since Hampton earned a No. 16 seed, facing top-seeded Duke in the first round. Joyner saw two of his athlet es earn All-MEAC honors, as Pellum was named First Team All-MEAC after finishing the season second in the conference in scoring and junior guard Kwame Morgan was named Second Team All-MEAC after a breakout season. Pellum, the MEAC Tournament s Most Outstanding Player, was also named VaSID Second Team All-State, BASN HBCU Second Team All-American and NABC All-District 15, while Morgan was named a Lou Henson All- Through DTP, Joyner wants a team that plays hard, unselfishly, with confidence, and with passion believing that builds the foundation of a successful basketball program. The Pirates, through DTP, should take the simple game of basketball and play it aggressively, while simultaneously reaching their full potential on and off the court and never losing sight of their goals. Joyner also hopes DTP will be a good tool for teaching important life lessons. In Joyner s fourth season with the Pirates, Hampton went overall in However, the Pirates went 11-5 in conference play, finishing third in the MEAC after winning a head-to-head tiebreaker over S avannah State. Hampton closed out the regular season with nine wins in its last 12 games, as a young squad began to mesh and show its potential. Leading that charge was freshman point guard Deron

10 American and NABC All-District 15. Joyner was also named BASN HBCU Coach of the Year for his efforts. The Pirates overcame offseason tragedy and went in , Joyner s first season as head coach, finishing tied for fifth in the MEAC with an 8-8 record. He led the Pirates to the MEAC Tournament semifinals, beating archrival Norfolk State in the quarterfinals Despite struggling to find consistency for much of the season, Hampton won six straight games to close out the regular season and open the MEAC Tournament, before falling to top seed Morgan State in the semifinals. Senior guard Vincent Simpson earned Second Team All- MEAC honors for the second straight year under Joyner, leading the team with 14.1 points per game. Both Simpson and senior forward Michael Freeman eclipsed the 1,000 career point mark in As an assistant coach, he helped develop such players as Simpson, first team all-conference guard Rashad West, the MEAC s leading scorer in 2006, and Michael Freeman, the 2006 MEAC Rookie of the Year. As academic coordinator, Joyner guided the men s basketball program to the highest team GPA in 10 years. Joyner came to Hampton after 11 years as the assistant head coach at Johnson C.
