The Wildcats rallied to beat No. 17 Purdue, 13-10, on Saturday. Penn State is looking to snap a five-game losing streak. MISCUES HAUNT LIONS IN LOSS AT OHIO STATE The Penn State defense turned in another outstanding performance, but miscues by the offense and special teams allowed host Ohio State to score 14 points en route to a win Saturday. The Buckeyes returned a punt for a touchdown and an interception for a score to grab a 14-0 first quarter lead before gaining a first down. The Penn State defense limited Ohio State to 12 yards and no first downs on its first three possessions as PSU out gained OSU, 97-12, but trailed, T h e Buckeyes earned their initial first down with 8:56 left in the second quarter, a drive which ended when Matt Rice forced a fumble. The Lions took advantage of the turnover, as Tony Hunt scored on a three-yard run to make the score 14-7 with 5:55 left in the second quarter. On the ensuing kickoff, though, OSU returned it to the PSU 35 to set-up the Buckeyes only scoring drive of the game for a 21-7 halftime lead. Penn State limited OSU to 202 yards, the eighth consecutive foe that has failed to gain its total offense average against the Lions. Hunt rushed for 85 yards as PSU gained 177 yards rushing, its best effort since the UCF game. TOTAL DEFENSE BEST SINCE 78 Penn State is allowing just yards per game, its best average since 1978, when the Lions permitted only yards per game en route to an 11-0 regular season. The Lions are tied for seventh nationally in total defense with Virginia Tech. Penn State also joins Auburn, Texas and Wisconsin as the only teams to not allow more than 21 points in a game this season. See page 3 for more details on the defense. LAST MEETING For the first 52 minutes of the game, Penn State out-played host Northwestern, but several missed opportunities left the Lions clinging to a 7-0 lead. But, with eight minutes to play, the fortunes of the Nittany Lions and Wildcats quickly turned and NU went on to post a 17-7 win on Nov. 8, 2003, snapping PSU s fivegame winning streak in the series Penn State easily could have been ahead by 20 or more points at halftime, but two short missed field goals and a dropped pass that would have gone for a touchdown left the Lions up only 7-0 on a Zack Mills one-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. Midway through the fourth quarter, NU successfully faked a field goal and tied the game on a Jason Wright six-yard run with 6:49 to play. The Lions went three-and-out and NU took possession on the PSU 39 after a 28-yard punt return. On third and 12, QB B r e t t Basanez lofted the pigskin downfield and PSU safety Yaacov Yisrael got his hands on the ball for an apparent interception or pass break-up near the goal line. It marked the fifth time this season Penn State has held the opposition more than 120 yards below their total offense average, including each of the last four games. Ohio State became just the second team to score more than its season average, scoring 21, by virtue of its punt and interception returns for scores. The Buckeyes entered the game averaging 19.7 ppg. LIONS ONE OF ONLY FOUR TEAMS TO NOT ALLOW MORE THAN 21 POINTS Penn State is among elite company as one of only four Division I-A teams that has not allowed more than 21 points in a game this season. The others are: Wisconsin (8-0), Auburn (9-0) and Texas (7-1). There are 117 Division I-Ateams this season. DEFENSE SUPERB AFTER TURNOVERS Penn State has turned the ball over 23 times this season, but the Nittany Lion defense has been superb in the quick turnaround situations, allowing only two touchdowns and three field goals for a total of 23 points. The Lions have forced 12 punts after the turnovers, as well forcing one fumble, recording two safeties and blocking a field goal. The game ended after one of the turnovers and Ohio State returned an interception for a touchdown. KAPINOS BOOMS SECOND-LONGEST PUNT IN SCHOOL HISTORY; EARNS BIG TEN PLAYER OF THE WEEK Sophomore Jeremy Kapinos (Springfield, Va.) averaged 50.5 yards on his six punts at Ohio State, the second time this season he has averaged better than 50 yards per punt (52.0 vs. Purdue). Kapinos' effort was fifth-best in school history in a game. He now owns the third and fifth-best punting games in PSU annals. The highlight of his performance was a 78-yard punt that was downed on the OSU one-yard line by a hustling Calvin Lowry. The kick was the secondlongest punt in Penn State history, trailing only the 89-yard effort by Coop French against Iowa in The Penn State defense has played well all season, holding seven of eight opponents to their scoring average or below, and all eight below their total offense averages entering the contest with the Nittany Lions. This despite Penn State giving up over a four minute per game deficit in time of possession (27:50 to 32:10). Boston College, which scored 21 points (two more than its 19.0 average after one game), is the only opponent to have reached or exceeded its scoring average against Penn State. Boston College (-12) and Wisconsin (-32) are the only teams to get within 80 yards of reaching their total offense totals entering the game with the Lions. Penn State had its strongest efforts against the averages in holding Purdue to 20 points (27 below its average) and 348 yards (201 below Kapinos' kick also was the second longest by an opponent in Ohio Stadium history. Following the 78-yard punt, Penn State forced a three-and-out and got the ball back on its own 48, setting up Robbie Gould s fourth quarter field goal. For his efforts, Kapinos was selected the Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week. The conference honor is his first and the first for a Penn State specialist since Robbie Gould against Wisconsin in The only other PSUpunter to be recognized by the Big Ten was Pat Pidgeon vs. Arizona in For the season, Kapinos has punted 44 times for a 42.1 yard average, with 10 punts inside the 20. RARE FIVE-GAME LOSING STREAK Penn State has lost five consecutive games for just the second time in Joe Paterno s 39 seasons and 459 games as head coach. The only other time was last year when the Nittany Lions lost six straight contests. JUST FIFTH LOSING SEASON UNDER JOE PATERNO The Nittany Lions will have a losing record this season for just the fifth time in Joe Paterno s 39 seasons as head coach. The other years were: 1988 (5-6), 2000 (5-7), 2001 (5-6) and 2003 (3-9). LIONS FACE FIVE CONSECUTIVE FOES THAT HAVE BEEN RANKED Penn State is coming off a five-game stetch in which all five opponents had been ranked during the course of the season. The Lions played four consecutive ranked foes in the same season for the first time since starting Big Ten play in Wisconsin (5) and Iowa (20) are ranked this week, Ohio State fell out of the top 25 on Oct. 17 and Purdue and Minnesota fell out this week. Penn State also played Boston College, which is ranked No. 24 in this week s APpoll. DEFENSE HOLDS OHIO STATE TO 202 YARDS & ONE OFFENSIVE SCORE The Penn State defense continued its superlative play at Ohio State, allowing only a short touchdown drive by the Buckeye offense. 5 Penn State Football Weekly Release vs. Northwestern, Nov. 6, pg. 5 limited to 202 by the Lions, 121 below the Buckeyes average. It marked the fifth time this season Penn State has held the opposition more than 120 yards below their total offense average, including each of the last four games. The defense has just two senior starters, free safety Andrew Guman and OLB Derek Wake. The Nittany Lions limited OSU to 13 first downs and 59 yards passing. Eight of the Buckeyes 10 possessions ended in seven plays or less. The defense forced a pair of turnovers, one of which set-up a PSU touchdown drive. Midway through the second quarter, junior DEMatt Rice (Glenarden, Md.) sacked Troy Smith and forced a fumble that was recovered by senior OLB Wake (Beltsville, Md.) at the OSU 41. A 26-yard run by Tony Hunt (Alexandria, Va.) set-up his own threeyard run to cut the lead to The TD marked the first time this season the Lions had converted a turnover into points in Big Ten play. Midway through the third period, Wake forced a fumble that was pounced on by junior safety Calvin Lowry (Fayetteville, N.C.) at the PSU 20. Penn State was forced to punt, but Jeremy Kapinos launched a 78-yard effort, which was downed by Lowry at the OSU1. The Nittany Lions recorded six minus-yardage plays, including three sacks. Wake, sophomore Paul Posluszny (Aliquippa) and junior DE Tamba Hali (Teaneck, N.J.) all tied for the team lead with 10 tackles. Guman had nine stops, including his first career sack, before leaving the game with a chest contusion. Freshman LB Dan Connor (Wallingford) had seven hits. MILLS BECOMES PSU CAREER PASSING YARDAGE LEADER; NAME ON 17 SCHOOL RECORDS Senior quarterback Zack Mills (Ijamsville, Md.) became Penn State s career passing yardage leader in the UCFgame, moving past Tony Sacca ( ). Mills name is on 17 Penn State game, season and career passing and total offense records. Mills was 19 of 29 for 229 yards against the Golden Knights, giving him 6,081 yards by game s end to eclipse Sacca s mark of 5,852. He enters the Northwestern game with 6,755 career passing yards. He did not play against Ohio State after suffering a concussion against Iowa on Oct. 23. Mills had one of his top career performances in the Lions loss to Purdue, setting career highs with 29 completions and 49 attempts, while his 293 yards were second-highest. His previous high for attempts was 46 at Minnesota on Oct. 2 and the 49 pass attempts were the third-highest single-game total by a Penn State quarterback. His 29 completions topped his 27 vs. Ohio State in 2003 and were the second-highest total by a Nittany Lion. Mills' 293 yards passing were the second highest total of his career, trailing only his school record 399 yards passing against Iowa in T h e yardage was tied for the 13th highest single-game total in school history. Mills posted the 16th 200-yard passing game of his career in the Purdue game, tying him for Penn State career high 200-yard passing games with Kerry Collins. Mills' 37-yard TD pass to Terrell Golden against Purdue was the 38th TD pass in his career, moving him into sole possession of fourth place on the PSU career list. Kerry Collins ( ) is third with 39, with Todd Blackledge ( ) and Sacca ( ) tied for first with 41. Against Minnesota, Mills had a strong effort despite an injured right (non-throwing) shoulder. Hunt leads the team in rushing with 562 yards and five touchdows and also leads the team in receptions with 27. His seven catches for 110 yards at Minnesota is Penn State s top receiving game on the season and marked the first time a PSU tailback has posted a 100-yard receiving game since John Williams grabbed eight balls for 119 yards and a touchdown at Miami (Fla.) in Hunt and Williams are the only running backs in PSU history to surpass the 100-yard mark in receiving for a game.
