LSU MEN S BASKETBALL

3 Trent Johnson Head Coach 2nd year at LSU Trent Johnson, the 20th head men s basketball coach at LSU, continues to earn the respect of the college basketball world nationally. Tagged as one of the Five Best First-Year Coaches by Athlon Sports, Johnson and his staff look forward to the season as one of opportunity as he seeks to build on a decade of excellence at LSU, Stanford and Nevada. The basketball junkie who eats, sleeps (occasionally) and drinks college basketball during the months of July to April, took an LSU squad and molded and shaped them into one of the better teams in the history of the LSU program. The Tigers finished wtih 27 wins, tied for the third most wins in a season, and won the Southeastern Conference regular season championship with a week to go and a record of LSU returned to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2006, advancing to the second round before falling to North Carolina in the closest game the eventual national champions would have to play. In fact, LSU had a second half lead on the Tar Heels and the game was still in the balance entering the final eight minutes. For their work this past season, the Tigers obviously recognized nationally and justly rewarded, and so was their coach. Johnson was named the consensus 2009 SEC Coach of the Year and a finalist for four national coach of the year honors. Johnson completed a rare double in college basketball in being national Coach of the Year in two different leagues in consecutive seasons having been named the Pac-10 Coach of the Year in 2008 when his Stanford Cardinal advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16. He also became the first LSU men s basketball coach to win the league title and take the team to post-season play in his first year at the school. What was the reason for LSU s success? First, a veteran group of players made a commitment and understand what Coach Johnson s plan was to continue their development on and off the floor. They learned he was tough and demanding. They accepted new rules in some cases and quickly grasped both the on the court vision offensively and defensively and the off the court vision for an The Trent Johnson Record LSU player. Trent Johnson s record of success continues here at LSU and this year a much younger squad will have to blend with a couple of veterans from last year s championship team. The coach will still be the fierce competitor who exudes and demands toughness from his team. His devotion to the team, his protective beliefs toward his players and his loyalty to his former players is evident by the fact that four of his former players are now members of the LSU basketball staff. Johnson is a program builder and he has restablished the base of the LSU program by spending much of the th anniversary season visting with former players and coaches to bring together the past, the present and the future of the program. Johnson is charged also with the development of athletes both on and off the court. Off the court he is working hard to make sure student-athletes understand the student part of their days at LSU. At all three spots in his head coaching career, he has developed not just successful athletes and winning basketball teams, but young men who are having success in life. In his 10 years combined as a Division I head coach, he has won 186 games and taken teams the last seven years to post-season play, incluidng five NCAA appearances. He was recently appointed to the Board of Directors of the National Association of Basketball Coaches and has served on the NABC Special Committee on Recruiting and Access. Johnson, who was born in Berkeley, Calif., and calls Seattle, Wash., his home, is married to Jackie and they have two children: a daughter, Tinishia (26) and a son, Terry (23). Trent Johnson brought a wealth of experience to LSU and it showed in the way the team played and the way it was coached. His knowledge of the game excited LSU fans and former players. He has seen the potential of the program and is busy putting his mark on it. But most importantly, he can t wait to be on the floor coaching players in the game of basketball and the game of life -- at LSU. 3 League Coach of the Year titles (2003-WAC; 2008-Pac 10; 2009-SEC) 2 NCAA Sweet 16 appearances (Nevada, 2004; Stanford, 2008) 4 Finalist for four College Coach of the Year honors, Number of consecutive years Trent Johnson has taken a team to post-season play. 9 Number of wins over top 25 teams in last three years. 11 Seasons as a Division I Head Coach (5 Nevada, 4 Stanford, 2 LSU) 20 20th head men s basketball coach at LSU. /----OVERALL---/ /---CONF.---/ YEAR SCHOOL W-L PCT. 5 About Tasmin s Big Night Tasmin s big night of 38 points, wasn t even his career high; that came last year in double overtime at Starkville when he scored 41 points (Feb. 11, 2009) Tasmin hit 15-of-22 field goals, 4-of-7 three-pointers and 4-of-5 at the line with one assist in 40 minutes. Some of the milestones of the night: Last time someone scored more points in the PMAC Shaquille O Neal (43) vs. Arizona State, Dec. 28, 1991 First Player To Have 15 Field Goals in a Game since O Neal had 18 in the game listed above. There Are 10 LSU Players who have scored at least 38 points in a game Pete Maravich, Bob Pettit, Chris Jackson, Shaquille O Neal, Kenny Higgs, Al Apple Sanders, Ronnie Henderson, Durand Rudy Macklin and Tasmin Mitchell. Last time someone scored more points in an SEC game in the PMAC Chris Jackson (50) vs. Tennessee, Feb. 11, 1989 It is the most points scored by an SEC player this year in an SEC game second most by a league player this year (Rotnei Clark of Arkansas had 51 against Alcorn State, 11/13/09) and it is the third game over 30 points in a league game this season. Big Game Puts 2,000 Back In Play A 38-point game that upped his scoring average by over one full point brought the 2,000 career point plateau firmly back into play with a minimum of 13 games left to play in the career of Tasmin Mitchell. Only 23 players in SEC history have hit that mark proving to be as difficult as the record shows Mitchell is now 207 points away from a mark that only Pistol Pete Maravich and Durand Rudy Macklin have accomplished at LSU More easily attainable will be a top five spot in the school scoring list which would come at the 1,917 point mark, just 124 points away. Mitchell at 1,793 points and eighth all-time in scoring presently at LSU, is just 61 points away from the seventh spot held by the two-year career of Chris Jackson ( ) with 1,854 points. A Magical Night At the Cow Palace -- A year ago, Jan. 31, marked the 100th anniversary celebration of the first intercollegiate basketball game at LSU Coming up on Jan. 31, 2010, will be the 40th anniversary of a national milestone in college basketball that took place in Baton Rouge. On Jan. 31, 1970 before a sold-out crowd at the John M. Parker Ag Center (or the Cow Palace as it was called), Maravich needed 40 points to pass Oscar Robertson and become Division I s all-time leading scorer. Here are a few excerpts from a piece PA announcer Dan Borne has written to commemorate the date as he remembered as he covered the game for WAFB-TV and CBS Sports: With the promise of a new record, media from around the country rimmed the court that was laid on the smelly dirt floor of the arena. The place went wild when Pete tallied his 39th point. Then it took six trips down the court for the Pistol to shoot the ultimate bull s eye. Why six trips? Had anyone ever seen Pete come up empty on six straight possessions? But with 4:41 left in the game he nailed it. His favorite shot, a rimless jumper from some 18 feet out, swished through and put Pete in the record books forever. He was raised high by his teammates. Eleven thousand fans roared. Media surged onto the floor for interviews and Pete, through it all, looked a little blasé about what had just happened. How does it feel? asked Bob Scearce of WAFB. Well, we re in a game right now, Pete said, pointing to the scoreboard. After the furor ended the game resumed. Pete finished with 53 (and 12 assists) in a Tiger victory. Maravich later called that shot his greatest honor ever. A Jersey Retirement in LSU s Future The LSU Athletics Department will return its fourth men s basketball jersey on Saturday, Feb. 6, at halftime of the Kentucky game when Durand Rudy Macklin joins the legendary Pistol Pete Maravich, Bob Pettit and Shaquille O Neal with his men s basketball jersey hung from the rafters of the Maravich Center. There will be events during the week that Macklin will attend for media interviews and to sign autographs with fans prior to the event. Macklin played at LSU starting in the season through the NCAA Final Four year of Macklin, who played in 123 games totaled 2,080 points, a 16.9 points per game average, to finished second behind only Maravich on the school s all-time scoring list. Macklin is also the school s leading all-time rebounder with 1,276 boards, a 10.4 average. He was a member of the school s All-Century team announced a year ago and in 1980 and 1981 was named a firstteam All-American and the 1981 SEC Player of the Year as chosen by Sporting News. The League s New TV Package With the start of league play is where fans will really see the new contracts with ESPN and CBS take shape for basketball. For the first time in league history, each of the 96 conference games will be televised live as part of the historic 15-year agreements with the two networks. Almost half of the SEC s league games will be distributed nationally with ESPN or ESPN2 televising 27 contests, ESPNU showing eight and CBS Sports five. The SEC s games on the ESPN family of networks will be exclusively branded as the SEC on ESPN. As part of the package, Fox Sports Network was able to keep their exciting Saturday night hoops set of games from ESPN. Comcast Sports also has obtained a package of games that will air in most of Louisiana on Cox Sports TV. The SEC Network will be the over-the-air syndicator of Wednesday night and Saturday afternoon games through ESPN Regional Television. National coverage of the SEC Basketball Tournament has been expanded with the semis and championship game broadcast on ESPN on ABC. The SEC Network will show the first two rounds of the tournament which this year is in Nashville. This is second of four straight SEC Network appearances for the Tigers. The 2000s Very Good To LSU The Tigers closed the decade with a loss but there were lots of highs and lows in a decade that saw LSU win four SEC Western Division titles, two SEC Championships, make seven post-season tournaments including the 2006 NCAA Final Four and win 199 games from Jan. 1, 2000 to Dec. 31, The only other decade when LSU won more games was in the 1980s when the Tigers won 209 games, went to two NCAA Final Fours (1981 and 1986), won two SEC Championships and made 10 post-season appearances. Last Year s SEC Title Gave LSU A Unique Triple Double LSU s conference title last year in men s basketball was its 10th Southeastern Conference title the Tigers won and it gave LSU a unique triple-double in the league s three major men s sports LSU has not won the most titles in the three sports, but they were the first school in league history to win at least 10 titles in each of the three. Alabama is the only other school in the league to have won double figure titles in two of the three (football, baseball). LSU has won 10 titles in basketball and football and 13 in baseball LSU s basketball title years were: 1935, 1953, 1954, 1979, 1981, 1985, 1991, 2000, 2006, Mitchell Part Of Unique Group For senior Tasmin Mitchell he already is part of a unique group of LSU who played on two SEC Championship teams. Mitchell started on both the 2006 and 2008 teams. He joins a select group of players that total nine players in the history of LSU basketball to start on two conference championship teams: 1953, Bob Pettit, Benny McArdle, Norman Magee, Don Belcher, Ned Clark 1979, Greg Cook, Ethan Martin 2006, Tasmin Mitchell, Garrett Temple About Ole Miss The Rebels are ranked at 22 in the AB poll and No. 24 in the coaches poll as they come into the game with a 14-4 record and a 2-2 mark in the Southeastern Conference. Ole Miss is coming in off a home win over South Carolina on Wednesday Chris Warren led the way with 17 points and Murphy Holloway had 14 points and 12 rebounds for his 12th double-double of the season Ole Miss will be looking for its first win in Baton Rouge since 2003 Andy Kennedy is the head coach of the Rebels, in his fourth season in Oxford Here are the probable starters: G 12 Chris Warren (Jr., 5-10, 168, Orlando, Fla.) 16.6 ppg, 3.5 apg G 14 Eniel Polynice (Jr., 6-5, 222, Sarasota, Fla.) 9.9 ppg, 2.4 rpg, 4.3 apg G 24 Terrico White (So., 6-5, 213, Memphis, Tenn.) 15.9 ppg, 4.3 rpg G 32 Zach Graham (Jr., 6-6, 218, Suwanee, Ga.) 10.7 ppg, 3.7 rpg F 31 Murphy Holloway (So., 6-7, 230, Irmo, S.C.) 10.3 ppg, 7.1 rpg Home Games The loss to Utah on Jan. 2 snapped LSU s eight-game win streak in the building since the start of the season LSU is 9-3 this season Last year, LSU was 19-2 in the PMAC, losing only to Xavier and the home finale against Vanderbilt The 19 wins marked the all-time single season for wins in a season at the Maravich Assembly Center The previous mark was LSU MEN S BASKETBALL

7 16 on two occasions In its 39th season as the home of the Tigers, the Alabama game marked the 600th game in the Maravich Center since it opened on Jan. 2, 1973 The building was originally built by the University and was known as the LSU Assembly Center and was renamed the Pete Maravich Assembly Center in the summer of 1988 after the untimely death of college basketball s all-time Division I scorer The building was acquired by the LSU Athletics Department in 2004 LSU is looking to break a four-game SEC losing streak in the building that dates back to last year s SEC finale against Vandy. Road Games LSU was 6-3 on the road a year ago, its first winning road record since the 2006 season when LSU was 7-4 LSU is 0-6 this year away from the PMAC, those came on the neutral court of Madison Square Garden against UConn and Arizona State in November and Washington State s home-away-from-home for a game each year in Seattle. LSU is 0-3 on opponents home courts at Xavier, South Carolina and Florida. Against Nationally Ranked Teams LSU has a record of against teams ranked in the Associated Press Top 25, 0-1 this year after the loss in Madison Square Garden in November to Connecticut LSU is 3-3 against teams ranked 22nd in the AP poll LSU is 1-3 against ranked teams in the Trent Johnson era, 0-1 at home. Efficiency Quota Like quarterback ratings in the NFL, the NBA uses an efficiency scale to determine its top players (as if you couldn t figure them out anyway) The quotient is based on a plus minus = total of: (Points + Rebounds + Assists + Steals + Blocks) minus ((Field Goal Atts -Field Goals Made) + (Free Throw Atts. - Free Throws Made) + Turnovers) The leader in the NBA is LeBron James of Cleveland with a season total average a little over Here is what the crack research staff at LSU came up with when applying that formula to some of the LSU players prior to the Ole MIss game: Tasmin Mitchell Storm Warren Bo Spencer 7.50 Chris Bass 6.30 Dennis Harris 5.44 The NBA also does that on a per-game basis as well, determining who the most efficient player was in a particular game... For example, Tasmin Mitchell had obviously the best singlegame total of the season with a plus-39 against Auburn on Wednesday night Last week, Storm Warren was a +26 in the South Carolina game and Mitchell was +23 in the Florida game The best previous game of the year had been a plus-36 by Warren in the Northwestern State game. Tasmin Mitchell One constant, whether the game is good or bad, is the effort of fifth-year senior Tasmin Mitchell Mitchell is playing at a level that will leave his name all over the career records list when his career ends at the end of this season. He was part of his second SEC Championship team in 2009 after severe disappointment in when his season was shut down after just three games with a stress fracture that would require surgery in his left shin. Highlighting his season were the winning three-pointer at Kentucky on Feb. 28, 2009 that would secure for LSU the conference title and a Feb. 11, 2009 night when he pumped in 41 points in a double overtime win at Mississippi State. This year has its own highlight already with the winning shot against Nicholls (12/17), as part of a four-game stretch of games from Dec. 1 to Dec. 17: UL-Laf. Garrett Temple set some school marks for longevity in his career that ended last year and most will be gone when the season is over. Temple played in 134 games and started 131, and Mitchell is at 124 games and 123 starts. The only game Mitchell didn t start was last year s senior night game when he deferred his starting spot for the only time in his career to allow the five seniors to start. Temple is the all-time minutes played leader at LSU with 4,432 and Mitchell is well on pace, averaging 38 minutes a game (tops in the league) to go past Temple. He enters the game at 4,221, presently fourth best at LSU With his 29th minute in today s game, he will move past Torris Bright ( ) into third place at the school. Mitchell is averaging a team best 18.1 points and 9.4 rebounds In the last 10 games, his scoring average is up 1.2 points and in the last 11 games, his rebound average is up 2.0 His scoring average is third in the league and his rebounding mark is second best in the league He has played 686 of a possible 725 minutes. In the 2009 championship season, Mitchell averaged 16.3 points per game (second on the team, eighth in the SEC) a year ago and 7.2 rebounds (11th in the SEC). Last season, he shot 52.2 percent from the field ( , 7th in the league) and 72.5 percent from the line. Mitchell was 10-of-19 from the arc last year as he played primarily inside. Now with him roaming the court more, he is 18-of-49 from the arc (36.7 percent), after hitting four treys on Wednesday. The preseason Wooden and Naismith candidate was a unanimous preseason first-team All-SEC selection by the coaches. Bo Spencer Spencer took charge of the point last season under Coach Johnson and responded by averaging 11.4 points, 2.1 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game. A sprained left ankle kept him out of a couple of mid-february games and a question this year early was how he would respond to off-season wrist surgery. The wrist appears to be fine, but it was a sprained ankle against UConn (11/25) that kept him out of the Arizona State game (11/27). But Spencer showed renewed enthusiasm in the Southeastern win (12/14) as he returned to the starting lineup and had 21 points, hit three treys and had five assists in 39 minutes He then put three straight 20-plus totals on the board against Rice (12/19) getting 22 points on 8-of-16 field goal shooting that included four treys; Washington State, scoring 23 points in 44 minutes (12/22); and, although only his free throw shooting was most accurate (7-7), he still had 20 points in the Xavier loss (12/29). But the 20-point run came to a halt as he took only six shots and scored four points in the Utah game (1/2), knocking his scoring average down by over a point to 15.8 a game... The junior is resilient if nothing else, bouncing back to score 18 points, hitting four treys and leading the attack as LSU sprinted away in the second half of the McNeese game (1/4). Spencer had 21 points in last year s season opener against Jackson State and did even better in the opener (11/13), scoring 23 points Spencer did not have a great shooting night, hitting just 8-of-19 field goals and 3-of-12 treys, but he did have five assists and one steal in 38 minutes. In the NIT second-round game against Western Kentucky, Spencer had 28 points and seven boards to go with four assists and just one turnover in 40 minutes. In fact, he played all 40 minutes in both LSU-hosted NIT games and all but two minutes in the first three contests. Spencer is now averaging 14.9 points, 2.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game. His scoring average is ranked 14th in the league. Storm Warren The Monroe, La., sophomore has had some good numbers on the court of the Maravich Center as he tied his career scoring high with 21 and had nine boards in the Utah game (1/2) LSU MEN S BASKETBALL

9 All eight of his double doubles have been at the Maravich Center this season, including the latest Wednesday against Auburn when he had 17 points and 11 boards He also had 21 in the Northwestern State game (12/12) and had his best of 16 rebounds in each of the games against Louisiana-Lafayette (12/1) and Northwestern State (12/12) Against South Carolina (1/13), Warren was on his game hitting 7-of-8 field goal attempts and 5-of-6 free throws to score 19 points Wednesday. Warren is third on the team in scoring average at 13.7 points per game (t21st in the SEC). He fell out of the league lead for rebounds for the first time at the start of league play and is now fourth in the league at 8.7 a game. Last year in 30 games, he averaged 2.0 points per game, 7.5 minutes and a free throw percentage of 48.7 percent (19-of-39). When Warren had his first set of three double doubles he became the first LSU player to have double doubles in three consecutive games since Glen Big Baby Davis had three straight in December He became the first LSU player to have nine offensive rebounds in a game since Glen Davis did it against Tennessee in the 2007 SEC Tournament His four straight games of 10 plus rebounds earlier this year was the first time an LSU player has done that since Chris Johnson did it in February and March He is eighth in the league in blocked shot average at 1.7 a game. Great Improvement For Warren Going into the start of league play, Storm Warren had one of the best scoring average improvements in the country according to STATS-Chicago (based on minimum 18 games played last season and nine games played this season, through Jan. 13): Last Year This Year Improve 1 Elliot Williams, Memphis Ashton Gibbs, Pittsburgh Eric Carlson, North Dakota St Josh Vaughan, North Dakota St Storm Warren, LSU Benzor Simmons, Tenn-Martin Jordan Sugars, Navy Justin Greene, Kent State Taylor Brown, Bradley David Perez, Centenary Malcolm Lee, UCLA Klay Thompson, Washington St Zach Kinsley The walk-on from Baton Rouge continues to get more and more playing time from Coach Johnson and he has certainly earned it with his ability on the floor this season He earned a spot on the team when Coach Johnson held his first ever LSU walk-on tryouts in September 2008, something that Coach Johnson has done at his other coaching spots at Nevada and Stanford He has hit upon some good players in the past such as Stanford walk-on Chris Bobel, who is now the LSU Director of Basketball Operations Kinsley played in nine games a year ago, averaging 2.6 minutes and scoring a total of six points. Kinsley had to go through the walk-on tryout again this year, but it was obvious he was so much ahead of the rest of the players, Johnson sent Kinsley to the showers early having seen enough. With LSU s present injury and roster situation, Kinsley has been needed in all 16 games and against Arizona State in the Garden, the Baton Rouge walk-on was given a starting spot as LSU went with a three-guard lineup Kinsley responded hitting three treys in 39 minutes making 5-of-6 free throws to finish with a career high 14 points He has started four total games, averaging 4.1 points per game and 16.6 minutes a contest He is 12-of-27 from the arc and the fifth leading scorer on the team. Chris Bass Bass, who has started 10 games this season, was back in the starting lineup for the conference opener against Alabama and he had four assists and no turnovers in 35 minutes to go with three points Against South Carolina, he had more turnovers than assists for only the second time this season Against Florida, he did come back with a positive number of three assists and one turnover, while also scoring six points He has a team high 62 assists (3.4 average) and 25 turnovers, a ratio of 2.5, third in the league He is averaging 27.0 minutes a game and 2.9 points.
