3 JOHNNY JONES Head Coach 5th Year at LSU (17th Year as Head Coach) The burning desire and passion, combined with the love of his alma mater, has made Johnny Jones and LSU a strong fit together as he enters his fifth year as head coach. Jones has proven his recruiting ability with multiple top five ranked classes and 80 wins in four years at LSU, the most four-year win total by any head coach in school history. In fact, his first three wins in the season will push him past both C. C. Stroud and Press Maravich into fourth on the LSU Coaches win list behind only the three longest tenured coaches in school history who combined to handle the head coaching position for a period of 65 years. More notably, all four years he has posted non-losing seasons in the difficult Southeastern Conference and his 40 league wins is the second best start among present league coaches who have been on the job at least four years. But there are numbers that have to be taken into account when it comes to Jones first-four years at LSU: 13 Number of graduates in four years Every basketball player that has reached their senior season with the program under Jones has graduated from LSU, including three who returned to school during his tenure. 1 No. 1 NBA Draft selection (Ben Simmons, 2016) Simmons became just the second LSU player to be picked No. 1 in the draft, joining Shaquille O Neal (who Coach Jones was on the bench for as an assistant at LSU). 4 NBA Draft selections last three years. -- Johnny O Bryant III (2014, Milwaukee); Jarell Martin (1st rd, Memphis, 2015)) and Jordan Mickey (Boston, 2015); and, Ben Simmons (No. 1, Philadelphia) in Wins (three shy of moving into fourth all-time at LSU) 2 Post-season appearances 9 All-SEC selections 3 -- Ranking in college basketball in 2016 in increase in average attendance from 8,897 in 2015 to 11,383 this past season. $200,000 Money raised for Baton Rouge area flood relief by the Shaquille O Neal-Coach Johnny Jones Golf Tournament. For Jones, just the fifth LSU alum to hold the top position in the men s basketball program and the third to have played and serve as head coach, his beliefs about reaching out to fans and giving them an exciting style of basketball to watch in the Maravich Center has been a strong selling point to fans and recruits alike. Jones, in his coaching career, has aimed to put teams on the floor that will play hard from start to finish and play a style of basketball that makes players want to come to LSU to showcase their talent in a team concept. His teams have averaged well over 70 points a game the last four years and has shown the ability to rally when necessary, including 10 times when down by five or more at the half. Jones has a job that he has been preparing for years to accept and that call to be the head coach at LSU came on April 13, He returned to a place he had spent many years playing and coaching. It was the dream job scenario and what he did after leaving LSU the first time prepared him to make this return successful. Jones believes in one of the long-time philosophies of LSU basketball HIT Hard. Intelligent. Together. It s a philosophy that LSU players learn very quickly that if they play hard, play with intelligence and play together, a lot of good things can happen. Throw in Family and you have the mantra of LSU Basketball under Johnny Jones. It s a family that has worked together at such times as flood relief, unloading a giant 18-wheeler of supplies from Shaq for a local area, or making an annual visit to the local hospital children s wing to sing Christmas carols to patients. It s reading in school to kids or visiting and learning from children at the Louisiana School for the Visually Impaired. It has been that way since day one for Coach Jones as he has gone out of its way to embrace all aspects of this community. This is Jones third career head coaching position as he served as the interim head coach at the University of Memphis during the season and began his run as the head coach at the University of North Texas prior to the season. The Mean Green advanced to four of the last six Sun Belt Conference Tournament championship games, which included each of the final three seasons Jones was the head coach there (2010, 2011, 2012). Under Jones, the Mean Green averaged 21 wins per year over his last six seasons which included a school record 24 wins in 2010 and a pair of SBC titles and NCAA Tournament trips. When Johnny Jones suited up for his first game as an LSU Tiger against Colgate in the Great Alaskan Shootout on Nov. 28, 1980, it would mark the first of 121 games that he would play for LSU. Then the player would turn assistant coach and be on the bench with Coach Brown for another 407 contests. Jones is the only person in LSU history to both play (1981) and coach (1986, assistant) in an NCAA Final Four. After his Tigers went to the 2015 NCAA Tournament, he became the first person to play for the Tigers in an NCAA Tournament, serve as an assistant coach for LSU in the NCAA Tournament and to be LSU head coach in an NCAA Tournament game. After Coach Brown s retirement following the season, Jones moved to Memphis to serve as Associated Head Coach in 1998 and Jones was named the interim head coach at Memphis just prior to the season and then spent a year as an assistant coach in the SEC with Alabama (2001). He was named the head coach at North Texas on April 16, 2001, where he stayed until the LSU job became his in April THE JOHNNY JONES RECORD /----OVERALL---/ THE JONES FILE Birth Date: March 30, 1961 Age: 55 BiRTHPLACE: DeRidder, La. LAST TIME OUT -- KENTUCKY 92, LSU 85 (FEB. 7, LEXINGTON, KENTUCKY) LSU was able to put together one of its best overall efforts Tuesday night at Kentucky, playing hard from start to finish and in the end took a 25-point Kentucky lead down to just six in the final minute of the contest. After falling behind, at the intermission, LSU was able to get the margin to 10, 53-43, with 13:58 to play. The Wildcats would advance the lead back to 25 points twice at 8:47 and 8:08 before LSU finished the game 34-16, eventually cutting the game to six with 14 seconds to play. Antonio Blakeney led LSU with his third career 30-plus point game of 31 points on 12-of-19 shooting with four treys and a team high 5 assists. Brandon Sampson added 17 points on 6-of-12 shooting with one trey. The Tigers would shoot 62.5 percent in the second half (20-of-32) and 8-of-11 from the arc in outscoring Kentucky in the final 20 minutes. For the game, LSU shot 32-of-64 with 10 three-point field goals. Kentucky shot 49.2 percent overall (31-of-63). Kentucky would out rebound LSU, 40-26, but points in the paint were even at 38. However, LSU had a advantage in points off turnovers as both teams had 14 turnovers. FREE THROWS THAT WERE ACTUALLY FREE It started last Saturday for a team that was struggling at the line Only two players went to the line that day against A&M, but both Brandon Sampson and Skylar Mays were perfect at the stripe to the tune of 13-of-13, the second recorded perfect night at the line according to the SEC statistics team high pages. Vanderbilt was 3-of-3 at Texas A&M on Jan. 31, Sampson was 9-of-9 at the line, while Mays was 4-of-4... The last time LSU shot 100 percent from the line was almost five years LSU MEN S BASKETBALL

5 to the day, Feb. 8, 2012 when LSU was 10-of-10 at the stripe versus Vanderbilt. Sampson s 9-of-9 was his second of the year with the other coming against ODU in the Bahamas in November. Sampson is one of eight players this year in league play to have a perfect night with at least eight attempts. LSU against Kentucky had another good evening Tuesday night of 11-of-15 or 73.3%. Sampson was 4-4 at the line. LSU s somewhat anemic free throw percentage is now at 272-of-416 or 65.4% (12th in the league) Opponents have made 94 free throws on 112 more attempts (366-of-528, 69.3%) In league play, opponents have made more free throws (211) than LSU has attempted (192) LSU is 127-of-192 or 66.1 percent in the 11 league games, while opponents are 211-of-294 (71.8%). The Tigers have been able to cash in on free throws in the last five games, shooting 71.4 percent (55-of-77) Opponents though are 91-of-127 or 71.7%. BLAKENEY WITH A ROAD GEM AND FIRST 30 GAME ON THE ROAD For the second straight road game, sophomore Antonio Blakeney was near the top of his game at Kentucky (2/7) as he posted the third 30-point game of his career, equaling the second highest game of his LSU career. Against the Wildcats, Blakeney made 12-of-19 field goals, including 4-of-7 three-point field goals and 3-of-4 free throws to finish with 31 points. For Blakeney it was his first 30 points game of the year, but the third of his LSU career and the first to occur on the road: 32 vs. Florida, Feb at Kentucky, Feb vs. Miss. State, Feb In the previous road game on Jan. 28 at Texas Tech, Blakeney posted 23 points on 8-of-16 shooting with 3-of-7 from the arc and 4-of-7 from the free throw line. Blakeney, who averages 16.3 points per game, is an obvious focus when teams set their scouting reports and the defense has had the upper hand in Blakeney s last three appearances at the Maravich Center. In games against Florida, South Carolina and Texas A&M, the Florida native has a combined 20 points in the three games on 8-of-33 shooting with two treys. Blakeney now has seven games of 24 points or more for LSU and since the start of the season, according to College Basketball at Sports-Reference.com, Blakeney is tied with Jarell Martin for the most games by a Tiger in that category from the start of the season to present: Jarell Martin ( ) 7; Antonio Blakeney ( ) 7; Jordan Mickey ( ) 6; Keith Hornsby ( ) 5; Johnny O Bryant ( ) 5 He is the only player in that same period to have three 30-point games in their career. Blakeney is averaging 32.9 minutes per game, 5th in the league. He is now averaging 16.3 points per game (6th in the league). DUOP REATH LSU s first-year junior-college transfer forward Duop Reath had a season high of rebounds on Feb. 4 against A&M when he pulled down 16 rebounds to go with 16 points and two blocks. It was the most rebounds since he debuted on Nov. 12 as he became the sixth LSU player in the Johnny Jones era to post a game of 20 points and 10 rebounds in a win over Wofford Reath posted 23 points and 14 rebounds. He joined Ben Simmons (3 times), Jordan Mickey (8), Jarell Martin (5), Johnny O Bryant III (5) and Shavon Coleman (1). The was his fifth double of the season and the third in SEC play. He has had 17 double figure scoring games. He is averaging 13.2 points per game and 6.2 rebounds along with 1.7 blocks a game. He is 20th in the SEC in scoring, 13th in rebounds, 2nd in FG percentage (127-of-237, 53.6%) and 6th in blocks. TWO-POINTERS AN LSU OFFENSIVE STAPLE Throughout the season, the two-point field goal has been one of the staples of the LSU offense with LSU shooting 50.7 percent inside the arc The Tigers average scoring 43.4 points inside the arc and that is 13th in the nation according to TEAMRANKINGS.com LSU is getting 57.8 percent of its points from inside the arc and that ranks 14th highest percentage in Division I. After averaging just 4.0 points a year ago, Sampson has started 18 games, including the last three, and is averaging 26.1 minutes per game, 11.3 points and 2.8 rebounds. He is for the season 91-of-186 (48.9%) with 29 treys. His most impressive game until his play this past week was the 30 minutes in the Old Dominion (11/24) win when he hit 7-of- 10 FGs with a trey and helped seal the game as part of his 9-of-9 FTs. It all added up to a career high of 24 points. He has made 16 consecutive free throws entering the Arkansas game. SKYLAR MAYS Skylar Mays of Baton Rouge came off the bench against South Carolina (2/1) and had his eighth double figure game of the season with 11 points on 4-of-9 shooting that including two treys He returned to the starting lineup against A&M (2/4) and made 3-of-6 field goals including two treys and 4-of-4 free throws for 12 points. For the week, Mays played 59 minutes, made 7-of-15 FGs, 4-of-6 3FG and 5-of-7 FTs to end up with 23 points and 6 assists. Mays high game was 22 points at Arkansas (1/21) He has had seven-of-his-nine double figure scoring games in SEC play. He has started 17 games and is averaging 22.2 minutes per game. Mays is averaging 77.6 percent from the line this season (45-of-58) He is averaging 7.5 points, 2.3 rebounds and 3.7 assists. Since the start of SEC play (Dec. 29) and including the Texas Tech game, he has raised his average from 4.9 to 7.6 points. Mays has 11 games of four assists or more highlighted by 11 assists and just one turnover in 23 minutes against Houston (11/29). Mays 11 assists in the win over Houston was the most by an LSU player in the Johnny Jones era as head coach and he became the fifth player in that time span to record 10 or more assists joining Ben Simmons, Tim Quarterman, Josh Grady and Charles Carmouche. Mays is 10th in overall assist average in the SEC at 3.7. Mays has 86 assists and 47 turnovers, a 1.8 assist-to-turnover ratio which is sixth in the league Entering the week, among league freshman, only De Aaron Fox of Kentucky, has a higher assist average in the SEC (5.4). TIGERS HAVE LOCAL CONNECTION STRONG AGAIN The Tigers have a Baton Rouge connection working again this season with scholarship players sophomore Brandon Sampson and freshmen Skylar Mays and Wayde Sims joined by senior Brandon Bridgewater and walk-on Reed Vial hailing from Baton Rouge. Another walk-on, Marshall Graves, prepped in Baton Rouge (at U-High) but is from Ponchatoula, Louisiana... In all, the 14-player LSU roster has eight players from the state of Louisiana. JALYN PATTERSON Junior Jalyn Patterson, who has been featured primarily at the off-guard position during his first two years and who is still in that role at times this season, has started 10 games for LSU. Patterson has had 11 games of five assists or more during the season, topped by the eight against North Florida (11/18) and 7 in the Bahamas against VCU (11/25). Patterson had seven assists in the VCU game, but has also shown a guard s rebounding mentality with nine boards against Wichita State (11/23) and seven in the ODU win (11/24). He has posted six assists twice in the league against Vanderbilt (12/29) and Mississippi State (1/7). He is now averaging 6.0 points per game to go with 3.4 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game... Patterson needs seven assists to become the 32nd LSU player to have 200 career assists and in the UK (2/7) game became the 26th player at LSU to grab 100 steals. In SEC games, Patterson has 41 assists and 15 turnovers and a 2.7 assist-to-turnover ratio which is second in the league. WAYDE SIMS Sims, the freshman from Baton Rouge, showed his ability on the boards against South Carolina (2/1) as he grabbed a season high 11 rebounds as part of an 8-point, 11-board evening. He followed that with a season-best 15-point effort against Texas A&M (2/4) that again showed his ability to shoot from the field. The son of a former LSU player has proven in the last seven games to be pretty good from the field: At Auburn 2-of-2 At Arkansas 4-of-4 Florida 5-of-5 At Texas Tech 4-of-8 S. Carolina 4-of-8 Texas A&M 7-of-11 At UK 2-of-5 7-game totals: 28-of-43 Sims has had seven double figure games averaging 6.7 points per game, raising his average one full point in the last five games. LSU was down 20 in the final 10 minutes to Vandy (12/29) when Sims came off the bench and he proceeded to hit four treys between the 8:15 and 6:53 mark to help trim the Commodore lead to nine. For Sims it was his then-season high of 14 points. Dad and former LSU player Wayne Sims has to be happy with how his son has played, as he is averaging 19.3 minutes a game with one start (at Texas A&M, 1/11). Wayde Sims also was a multi-time state title holder at University High in Baton Rouge. Dad Wayne played for LSU from under Coach Dale Brown and an assistant coach named Johnny Jones. Wayne Sims is LSU MEN S BASKETBALL

7 No. 33 on the school scoring list with 1,107 points, topped by a 13.3 scoring average his sophomore year ( ). He is also 26th on the school rebound list with 603 boards. The elder Sims is one of 22 players to have 1,000 career points and 500 career rebounds. The Sims join such family combos as Geert and Shane Hammink, Pete and Josh Maravich, Collis Jr. and Collis III and Garrett Temple, and, Rick and Paul Wolfert to name some. AARON EPPS After a couple of non-scoring games, Epps came off the bench at Kentucky (2/4) to play 17 minutes, hitting 4-of-6 field goals, including a trey, to score nine points with three rebounds. Aaron Epps didn t have his best game of the year scoring wise, but it would have to be considered one of the best overall games of his LSU career as he had 15 points and 13 rebounds in a career high 34 minutes at Auburn (1/18). Epps started the first five games of the season, scoring 17 against Wofford and had 14 versus North Florida. He has started 15 games in all, primarily taking the spot that Craig Victor II. Epps has had six double figure scoring games and that was his second double double of his career. He is averaging 5.9 points, 4.4 rebounds a game and 16.5 minutes a contest. SENIOR BRIAN BRIDGEWATER GETTING MINUTES LAST FOUR GAMES The senior, who has gotten minutes here and there this season, has been on the court more in the four three games than in his 12 previous games. Against Texas Tech (1/28), Bridgewater was on the court for seven minutes before versus South Carolina (2/1), the Baton Rouge product played 12 minutes, making one field goal with four rebounds. He also scored two points against A&M (2/4) in six minutes of play. He played seven minutes at Kentucky (1/4) In the last four games, he has posted 32 minutes. He has a season high of four points against Vandy (12/29) He missed five total games with minor injuries. He has appeared in 16 total games. KIERAN HAYWARD Freshman Kieran Hayward has been able in some games to find his mark He played a season tying high of 17 minutes against Texas Southern (12/17), scoring 8 points on 3-of-4 shooting that included two treys with three rebounds. He poured in a trey to close out a long scoring run for LSU in the Mizzou win. He again had 8 points with two treys and two free throws in 14 minutes against Mississippi State (1/7). Hayward was back in double figure minutes, playing 13 at Auburn (1/14). He had a season high of five rebounds in that game. Hayward is now averaging 1.5 points, 1.3 rebounds and 9.3 minutes per game for the 18 games he has entered. BRANDEN JENKINS Junior college transfer Branden Jenkins was finally able to get on the floor in the Vandy game (12/29). He played 19 minutes and hit 2-of-6 field goals including a trey in scoring five points. He next saw good minutes in the Mississippi State game (1/7), playing 13 and against scoring five points. He started the games versus A&M (1/11) and Alabama (1/14) and had four assists in the Alabama game (1/14). Jenkins was discovered to have an issue in his leg during his preseason physical that needed surgery and so he was unable to play in the first 11 games. Jenkins, who hails from the Chicago suburb of Maywood, Illinois, averaged 15.6 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists at Lee College in BRANDON EDDLESTONE For three years, he was a walk-on who got to see occasional action late in games, but this season prior to the start of the year, Brandon Eddlestone was given a scholarship by the LSU coaching staff. Eddlestone only saw one minute of action in three games this season, but things took a turn against South Carolina (2/1) as Johnny Jones, not getting the play from his forwards that he was hoping for, put Eddlestone in the game during the final four minutes of the first half. Eddlestone was diving on the floor, keeping balls alive by tapping them around and then got an offensive rebound for a bucket. In the second half, he would play seven more minutes and got the ball on the right wing and buried a three-pointer much to the delight of the crowd at the Maravich Center. He finished with six points and four rebounds in 11 minutes, all career highs He was back in for seven minutes in the Kentucky game (2/7). Eddlestone hails from Slidell, Louisiana and Northshore High School and is a two-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll. BUT AGAINST A&M It was another walk-on who got plenty of minutes against Texas A&M (2/4), as Marshall Graves came in to play guard for 14 minutes and dished out his first three assists of the year. Graves wasn t quite as lucky as Eddlestone as his three-point attempt missed, but he did score two points earlier in the year against VCU (11/25). JUNIOR ELBERT ROBINSON III Elbert Robinson had one of best efforts of the season at Auburn (1/18) scoring eight points on 4-of-5 field goal attempts while playing eight minutes. He started for the first time this season against Florida (1/25) and in nine minutes made 3-of-4 field goal attempts to finish with six points. In his last six appearances, he is a combined 8-of-10 from the field, scoring 18 points. Robinson is 17-of-27 (63.0%) from the field for the year and is averaging 2.2 points and 1.5 rebounds. SO HOW YOUTHFUL IS THIS ROSTER? Youth has been mentioned a lot about this roster and some of that youth and inexperience has shown up in showing consistent defensive ability play-after-play. Last year, Kenpom.com had LSU s level experience as the 320th of the 351 Division I teams. Now LSU s experience is down 338th of the 351 teams Only Kentucky and Mississippi State are the SEC teams with younger experience rosters. SCORING BREAKDOWN CLASS PTS PCT. LSU also has a couple of players: Josh Gray (Northern Arizona) and Keith Hornsby (Texas) on NBA D-League rosters SEC CHAMPS HONORED THIS WEEKEND The 1991 Southeastern Conference Champions of Coach Dale Brown (and assistant Johnny Jones) will be honored this weekend and introduced at the game on Saturday. The team went and 13-5 to win at that time the school s seventh title, the fourth under Dale Brown LSU was 15-1 in the Maravich Center that year Some of the players: SHAQUILLE O NEAL The SEC Player of the Year, Worldwide Amateur Athlete of the Year, College Basketball National Player of the Year Nation s leading rebounder in 1991 at 14.7 a game, third in blocked shots, seventh in scoring (27.6). He was the first SEC player to lead the league in scoring, rebounding, field goal percentage and blocks in the same season. He scored a building record of 53 points against Arkansas State (Dec. 20, 1990) one game after helping the Tigers upset Arizona on national TV, T.J. PUGH -- Pugh s job was most important and that was to get the ball to O Neal as many times as possible. That s how Pugh had 196 assists, the second most in a single season at LSU. He shot over 50 percent in SEC games and had 113 assists and just 48 turnovers in 18 league games. VERNEL SINGLETON -- Started all 30 games in his junior season, earning All-SEC honors for the second time in his career. He averaged 15 points a game and was a solid player who was there for whatever role the Tigers needed him to play. MIKE HANSEN -- He would be the third player on the 1991 team to average in double figures, but it was the road to averaging double figures for LSU that was interesting. Hansen played for Tennessee Martin in December 1988 and scored 40 points against the Tigers at the Maravich Center. He the next year would transfer to LSU. In 1991, he would hit a team-high 58 three pointers. SHAWN GRIGGS Griggs would lead the league in steals with an average of 2.8 per game He had eight steals against Arizona and a record 10 against Tennessee. WAYNE SIMS The son of current Tiger player Wayde Sims, he finished his career at that time No. 19 in both scoring (1,107 points) and rebounds (603), playing over 3,000 minutes for the Tigers. There were so many more contributing to the Tigers success that year and the complete roster is listed in the box on the final page of today s notes. IT S A WEEK ON THE ROAD COMING UP The Tigers have another Tuesday-Saturday week coming up but both games will be on the road. The Tigers will make their first ever visit to the Pavilion at Ole Miss on Feb. 14 (Tuesday) at 8 p.m. and then go to Tuscaloosa next Saturday for a 2:30 p.m. contest at Coleman Coliseum. Both games are on the SEC Network and broadcast on the LSU Sports Radio Network. LSU s next home game is a week from Tuesday, Feb. 21, against Auburn (6 p.m.).
