The men s game tips at 1 p.m. with the women set for a 4 p.m. start. Four seasons later, the Lady Ospreys enter Saturday s game with a 2-9 overall record, having secured wins against Wofford (71-60) and Lipscomb (52-51). Scoring just 48.5 points per game, the lowest scoring offense in the A-Sun, the Lady Ospreys were led by Jadhken Kerr, who averaged 8.8 points before sitting out the last five games. During the game, she passed Ernetta Dailey ( ), moving into 15th in school history in career points. Now, Hawkins needs to score just eight points to move past Sharon McDowell ( ), who scored 765 career points. Eb and Flow Senior Ebony Johnson earned a spot on the Cozumel Cup All-Tournament Team thanks to an 11-point, eight-rebound effort against Oakland. Both were season-highs for the guard. She hit a 3-pointer and an off-balance jumper in the final minute to help Upstate pull within two points twice in the loss. She scored eight points and had two rebounds and two steals in 19 minutes against defending Summit League champions, Oral Roberts. She also became the 15th player in school history to reach 400 career rebounds with her first board of the night. At 5-7, she is the second shortest in school history to reach the 400-board mark. Tomracida Crawford ( ) is the shortest player, at 5-5, to reach 400 career rebounds, posting 520 in her career. A Look At The Record Book Senior Courtney Bradley added one more mark to an already accomplished career as an Upstate point guard on Dec. 20, as the 5-5 point guard passed Angelina Gordon s mark of 335 career assists from In the process, Bradley, who had three helpers in the game, set the school s NCAA-era record for assists and moved into second in the school s all-time record book with 337 assists. The school s all-time leader, Suzanne Graham, played when the school was a member of the NAIA. Upstate Career Points Leaders Player Years Points 1. Is She The Same Old Hawk? For some watching the Spartans this season, it may be easy to conclude that junior Courtney Hawkins is not the same player that she was in when she led the A-Sun in scoring, averaging 16.4 points per game, and scored more than 19 points per game in A-Sun play. After all, Hawkins entered the week 21st in the conference in scoring, averaging 10.4 points per game. Before throwing out the caution flag, through, consider these couple nuggets about the Preseason All-A-Sun guard: In the last nine games of , Hawkins averaged 37.8 minutes per game to average 21.9 points, firing an average of 17.5 shots per game. Through the first nine games of this season, Hawkins has needed just 26.3 minutes and 9.1 shots per game to average 10.4 points. While her shots and minutes have fallen, Hawkins assists and assist-to-turnover ratio have risen, starting to make her into a fine point guard. Averaging 3.4 assists per game (fourth in the A-Sun), her 2.21 assist-toturnover ratio is 21st in the country and leads the conference. A Rejection A Day Senior guard Ebony Johnson has blocked a shot in each of the last three games, recording a rejection against South Carolina (Dec. 16), Oral Roberts (Dec. 19) and Oakland (Dec. 20). A 5-7 combo guard, Johnson has moved into ninth in the school s career record book with 33 career blocked shots, including her three this season. The shortest player amongst Upstate s career blocked shots leaders, Johnson has only blocked a shot in three consecutive games once before, doing so from Feb , New Kids On The Block One year after finishing next-to-last in the A-Sun in blocked shots, the Spartans enter the new year second in the league in the category, averaging 3.44 rejections per game. With its 31 rejections through the first nine games, the team is already almost past its total of 42 blocked shots during the season. The drastic turnaround can be attributed to the addition of two of the best shot-blockers in the league in sophomores Chelsea McMillan and Sam Frost. Frost, with 11 blocked shots, is third in the league and McMillan, with nine rejections, is fifth. Frost Heats Others Up Sophomore Sam Frost may have gotten a cool reception from the baskets in Cozumel during the Cozumel Cup, but that didn t keep the 6-0 post from contributing to the team. Instead, the Baltimore, Md., native used her passing game to help the Spartans, as she notched back-to-back career-highs in assists, notching three helpers against Oral Roberts before adding four dimes the next night against Oakland. In the process, Frost moved into a tie for fifth on the team, averaging 1.4 assists per game. Four For Efforts Four USC Upstate players finished in double digits against South Carolina on Dec. 16, with sophomore Chelsea McMillan finishing with 16 points, junior Courtney Hawkins posting 13, freshman Kendra Wallace posting 11 and sophomore Sam Frost scoring 10. It was the third time this season the Spartans featured four players with 10 or more points, also doing so against Montreat and at IUPUI. The team has reached the mark five times in the DI era and the South Carolina game was the second time the team did so against a Southeast-

4 USC Upstate Women s Basketball ern Conference team. Against Kentucky on Nov. 10, 2007, the school s first DI game, Courtney Bradley, Oceana Jackson, Tiffany Whiting and Ebony Johnson each finished with at least 10 points. Fresh Buckets Through the first seven games of the season, Upstate s top-scoring offense in the A-Sun has been led by its underclassman, with freshman and sophomore accounting for 65 percent of the team s 70.1 points per game. The freshman trio of Lesley Daniel, Chelsey Peterson and Kendra Wallace are averaging a combined 22.1 points per game, second only to the sophomores, who average 23.2 points per game. Presents From Santa (Fe) Upstate was led by career-highs from its two Santa Fe (Fla.) Community College transfers in their Atlantic Sun Conference debut on Dec. 3 at Mercer. Sophomore Chelsea McMillan posted 23 points and added five rebounds and three steals. McMillan hit 8-of-13 from the field and also went 6-for-10 from the line. Junior Kolesia Richardson, a point guard, finished with 14 points thanks to a perfect 8-for-8 night from the free throw line. She also added five rebounds. The former Lady Saints transferred to Upstate after helping Santa Fe to a 20-8 finish in the Mid-Florida Conference. Record Five Times November Reign USC Upstate completed just its fifth undefeated November in school history when it defeated IUPUI, 73-63, on Nov. 24. The Spartans, who finished 4-0 in the month, were the first squad since to go unbeaten during the season s opening month. The team won the most games in the month to stay undefeated, as both the and squads won three games during the month and and teams won just their season openers in November. Since moving to Division I in , the Spartans are 6-4 (.600) in the eleventh month. Little Bit O Redemption The win over IUPUI on Nov. 24 was a bit of sweet redemption for the Spartans, who fell to the Jaguars on Nov. 21, 2007 after the Spartans took a six-point lead into the half, spoiling Upstate s first Division I Spartan Starters Opponent Guard Guard Guard Forward Forward Presbyterian (11/15) Hawkins Wallace B. Junior Courtney Hawkins scored 19 of her game-high 22 points in the second half, as she canned three of her four 3-pointers in the stanza, to help the Spartans overcome a three-point deficit heading into the locker room. The game, played at the home of the Indiana Pacers, Conseco Fieldhouse, spoiled the first Jags game ever played in the downtown Indianapolis facility. Post Presence What a difference a year makes. After the Spartans accounted on guards for 76 percent of their scoring in , the post players have accounted for 40 percent (251 of 631 points) of the scoring through the first nine games. Sophomore Chelsea McMillan has led the way with 110 points in her first nine Spartan games while other first time Spartans, sophomore Sam Frost and freshman Chelsey Peterson, have combined for 101 points. A Productive Bench Through the first three games, the USC Upstate bench has provided for more than 36 percent (230 of 631) of Upstate s scoring, something made even more impressive considering that the bench provided for only 21 percent of the team s scoring output. In three games off the bench, sophomore Chelsea McMillan is averaging 17.0 points per game while freshman Lesley Daniel is averaging 6.9 points and junior Kolesia Richardson adds 4.6 points in a non-starting role. Block Party Upstate posted its first 10-block game in the DI era on Nov. 20 against Charleston Southern, as the Spartan defense swatted away 10 of the Lady Buccaneers 77 shots (13 percent). The Spartans were led by sophomore posts Sam Frost and Chelsea McMillan, who each had three rejections. Sophomore Brittany Johnson added two blocks and both freshman Chelsey Peterson and sophomore Kim Pitman added one. Highs In The 90s The Spartans 93 points against Montreat on Nov. 17 was the first time since a win over North Georgia on Jan. 17, 2007 that the Spartans scored 90 points in a game, a span of 43 matches. In all, the Spartans have topped the 90-point mark five times in the Tammy George era, falling only once, a loss to West Liberty State, ironically, also on Nov. 17, Money vs. Montreat The Spartans win over Montreat on Nov. 17 set a number of marks for the team at the Division I level. Some of the records include: Most points scored in a game (93) Largest margin of vistory (41) Highest field goal percentage (.574) Most assists (27) Upstate s first missed shot in the game was at the 15:53 mark of the first half, after the team already had a 15-3 lead. Within the first 10 minutes, the Spartans had a 35-8 lead, a lead that never fell below 22 points after that. Pay It Forward The Spartans posted their first 25-assist game at the Division I level on Monday night against Montreat, as eight players contributed to the cause with helpers. Senior Ebony Johnson led the way with six assists and fellow senior Courtney Bradley added five helpers. Junior Courtney Hawkins added four and both point guards freshmen Lesley Daniel and junior Kolesia Richardson each added three assists. Freshman Kendra Wallace added three helpers and freshman Chelsey Peterson had two. Sophomore Chelsea McMillan rounded out the list with one dime Spartan Roster No. Name Pos. Ht. Cl. C.C. transfer posted 16 points and added nine rebounds in her first game in the Hunter Green, Black and White. Oceana Jackson scored 12 points in Upstate s Division I debut against Kentucky on Nov. 10, Double-Double Trouble 5-4 junior guard Courtney Hawkins posted her second career double-double on Nov. 15 at Presbyterian, as the preseason All-A-Sun Team member had 14 points and 10 rebounds. Surprisingly, even as she led the A-Sun in scoring in and averaged more than four rebounds a game, she didn t have a double-double as a sophomore. In fact, it was a span of 632 days since her last double-double, as she notched 20 points and 11 rebounds on Feb. 20, 2007 at Lander. Hawk Earns Spot On Preseason All-A-Sun Team After a season in which she led the Atlantic Sun Conference in scoring, junior Courtney Hawkins landed a spot on the Preseason All-Atlantic Sun Conference team, the conference office announced. Hawkins, who is the first Upstate basketball player to earn Preseason All-A-Sun honors, finished the season with a league-best scoring average of 16.4 points per game. A balanced guard, the 5-4 Greer native was also 14th in assists (2.52), sixth in free throw percentage (.790), second in steals (2.34), fifth in 3-point field goal percentage (.358), eighth in 3-point field goals made (1.48) and fourth in minutes per game (34.55). Hawkins stepped up in A-Sun play, averaging a league-best 19.7 points per game and also finishing second in free throw percentage (.856), third in steals (2.38), 13th in 3-point field goal percentage (.364), eighth in 3-point field goals made (1.50) and second in minutes played (36.81). But what was a surprise to outsiders is who stepped up. Losing the team s top rebounder to an ACL tear, senior guard Ebony Johnson stepped into the role, averaging 7.0 boards per game despite her 5-7 frame. She was the only player in DI that is shorter than 5-8 and averaged at least seven rebounds a game. All-State Sparty Two of USC Upstate s freshmen earned All-State honors as prep seniors, as Chelsey Peterson earned the honors in South Carolina and Kendra Wallace earned the honors in West Virginia. Peterson, a 5-11 forward with explosive athletic ability, averaged 19.4 points, 5.7 rebounds and 2.9 steals per game at Irmo to earn Class AAAA All-State honors. Wallace, a 5-9 guard with a great outside shot, averaged 21.9 points per game as a senior to earn her third First Team Class AAA All-State honors at Hurricane. The West Virginian hit 45 percent of her 3-pointers (85-for-190). Three more Upstate additions also earned all-state honors during their prep careers. Junior Sharniece Wadelington, a transfer from UNC Greensboro, also earned South Carolina All-State honors as a prep senior at J.L. Mann, after averaging 16.7 points and four steals per game. Dutch Fork Duo Senior Courtney Bradley will be joined on the Spartans this season by a former high school teammate in Chelsey Peterson. The Dutch Fork High School graduates played together for one season, a year in which Bradley was named the Class 4A Region Player of the Year and the Silver Foxes advanced to the state title game. A freshman on that team, Peterson went on to earn all-state honors as a senior and helped the Silver Foxes to the second round of the state tournament. Upstate Picked To Finish 11th In Preseason Poll The Spartans were selected to finish 11th in the league in both the Preseason Coaches and Media Polls, the conference office announced. ETSU was selected to repeat as both league and tournament champions in both polls and Kennesaw State s Britteny Henderson was selected to repeat as the conference player of the year. Road Warriors In their first season in Division I, the USC Upstate team took on its most extensive traveling schedule in school history, not only taking a trip to the furthest point north (Kentucky, 341 miles) in school history, but also traveling the furthest south (Florida Gulf Coast, 710 miles). In total, USC Upstate hit the road 18 times, covering more than 7,000 miles. In their second season of DI play, the Spartans will have an even more impressive travel itinery, as they traverse more than 7,500 miles and played the first games in program history outside the United States when they visit Cozumel, Mexico for the Cozumel Cup in December. About USC Upstate USC Upstate was founded in 1967 as the Spartanburg Regional Campus, a junior college and branch of the University of South Carolina. By 1975, the school began to offer baccalureate degrees and became USC Spartanburg. The school, which had competed in men s basketball since the school s founding, moved to the NAIA. They were known as the Rifles, a nod to a local militia unit from the Revolutionary War. The school continued to grow and in 1990, the athletic programs moved from the NAIA with 12 like-minded schools from South Carolina and Georgia, forming the Peach Belt Conference. In 2004, the University of South Carolina Board of Trustees passed a resolution to change the name of the school to the University of South Carolina Upstate. In a better effort to brand the University and its new image, the athletic department changed its nickname to Spartans. In , the athletic department began its five-year transition to Division I and its full membership in the Atlantic Sun Conference, competing at the Division II level for the last time.
