5 COACHES Years from now, we ll look at Romar as the man who saved major college basketball in Seattle. Not since Marv Harshman walked the sidelines has the populace been so gaga over the program. John Sleeper, Everett Herald The guy s got such high character and he s got a way of being persistent without coming across as pushy. He s a humble guy who s done a great job. He and his staff have done an excellent job of showing kids that they don t have to go away from home to receive a great college experience. Paul Hewitt, Georgia Tech head coach He has the type of moral character that we need in basketball today. He always puts people at ease. He is an outstanding coach. I see nothing but a bright future for Lorenzo. John Wooden, former UCLA head coach and Hall of Famer He s a natural communicator. In the coaching profession, he is one of the most gifted individuals I know in the way he communicates and connects with people, whether they are fans, alumni, boosters, coaches, recruits, or the custodian at a high school gym. Steve Lavin, ESPN commentator and former UCLA coach Lorenzo Romar s class on the court as a coach is exceeded only by his class off the court as a person. Lorenzo cares foremost about the student-athletes education. He s a man of great passion and is a terrific teacher of the game of basketball. He has an excellent work ethic. Rick Majerus, former University of Utah head coach LORENZO ROMAR cont... what others say about coach romar Lorenzo Romar is more than just an outstanding basketball coach. His is someone who genuinely cares about his players on and off the court. He is a tireless worker. Roy Williams, University of Kansas head coach Lorenzo if the best fit I ve seen at any college for a long, long time. They re getting a great guy, a straight arrow. He knows the recruiting area down south and he has a lot of good UW contacts up here. Marv Harshman, former UW head coach and Hall of Famer The Huskies have themselves a fine young coach, an outstanding recruiter, and a man of character. This could be the start of a beautiful relationship. Larry Henry, Everett Herald Lorenzo is one of the bright young guys in our profession. There s no doubt that he s one of the rising stars in basketball. He s got undying enthusiasm and great passion for the game of basketball. I hire people who can communicate their thoughts and ideas to others, and he is one of the best in the world. Jim Harrick, former UCLA head coach Romar wanted the Huskies job from the moment (Barbara) Hedges announced it was open. He wanted it despite misgivings about departing a fine school located in one of the great sports cities in America. he wanted it more than anything he s ever wanted, which is saying something about a former junior-college role player who scratched and clawed his way through a five-year NBA career on sheer desire. If Coach Romar had told me to run through a brick wall because it would have made me a better player, I would have done it. Jelani McCoy, former UCLA player ( ) Lorenzo played for me in Milwaukee and was one of the most forthright and hard-working players I ever coached. He was totally dedicated to the game. I love to see guys that are dedicated like him go into coaching. Don Nelson, Dallas Mavericks GM and head coach Having a member of the alumni in place is a positive; he learned a lot about the Pac-10 as a UCLA assistant, and now he returns to the conference. 9 ASSISTANT COACH In his sixth year on the W a s h i n g t o n coaching staff is assistant coach Jim Shaw. He re-joined head coach Lorenzo Romar on May 10, 2004, after they worked together for half a season in 1999 at Saint Louis. Shaw helped direct the Huskies to a Pac-10 leading 119 wins since 2004, the second-best five-year span in UW history. He played a major role in the spectacular 2005 and 2006 seasons that were among the finest in UW history. Shaw s contributions come both on the court, where he provides a wealth of coaching knowledge and experience, and on the recruiting trail. He helped sign UW recruiting classes that were ranked among the best in the nation. Shaw has recently been a part of several successful coaching staffs, helping direct teams deep into the NCAA Tournament five times during a recent six-year stretch. In 2007, Shaw helped guide Washington to a 26-7 record. The Huskies made back-to-back Sweet 16 appearances for the first time ever. He was pivotal in the Huskies run to their first Pac-10 Tournament championship in 2005 and first ever No. 1 seed into the NCAA Tournament. UW finished with a 29-6 record, tying the school record for wins in a season. JIM SHAW Shaw served the previous five seasons at Oklahoma on Kelvin Sampson s staff. He helped the Sooners to a record, three Big 12 Tournament titles, a Final Four appearance in 2002 and an Elite Eight berth in We are extremely fortunate to have Jim Shaw join our staff. He is one of the hardest working coaches in America and his track record reflects that, Romar says. He was part of a staff that recruited a Final Four team at Oklahoma. He has been an NCAA participant at most of his jobs. His history in the Northwest, growing up here and having success coaching at Portland and other schools, should help us continue to build our program. Shaw, 44, was an assistant at Saint Louis under head coach Lorenzo Romar for a half year. Prior to that brief stint, he served as assistant coach at Portland for five seasons, from through He helped the Pilots to a pair of 20-win campaigns and a 1996 NCAA Tournament berth, the school s first since Prior to arriving at Portland, Shaw worked two years as an assistant at Montana State under head coach Mick Durham. He helped the Bobcats to a record and fourth-place Big Sky Conference finish, their best in seven years. Three of Shaw s recruits went on to earn All- Big Sky accolades. As an assistant at Southern Utah for a season ( ) under head coach Neil Roberts, Shaw was instrumental in leading the team to a 20-8 record, the school s best mark in its history as a Division I program. Washington is not the first Pacific-10 Conference job for Shaw who coached at Oregon State during the 1990 and 1991 seasons. The nationally-ranked 1990 Beaver team, featuring point guard Gary Payton, won the Pac-10 championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Shaw s first assistant coaching assignment came in at Idaho State. He helped lead the Bengals to an impressive run to the Big Sky Tournament championship and the league s automatic NCAA Tournament berth. That was ISU s first NCAA appearance in 10 years. A 1985 graduate of Western Oregon State College, Shaw was an NAIA honorable mention All-American and district MVP runner-up as a senior. He earned his master s degree in athletic administration from Idaho State in A native of Chimacum, Wash., Shaw attended Chimacum High School where he was an all-state performer in both basketball and football.
