Liberty holds a record at the on-campus facility (69.1 winning percentage), and started competition in the venue with a victory over Towson on October 21, The Flames have posted 13 winning seasons at home over the last 16 years, including a perfect 5-0 record during the 1992 campaign. Stateof-the-art FieldTurf was installed at Williams Stadium, replacing the old AstroTurf that had been used since the opening of the facility in FieldTurf is the latest innovation in artificial playing surfaces and is the surface of choice for 24 NFL stadiums, including Ford Field where Super Bowl XL was played last February, and at over 40 NCAA stadiums across the country. Rojas Enters Season As Lone Member Of 100 Career Tackle Club The Flames graduated three defenders last year that were members of the Flames' 100 career tackle club with C.J. Moore leading the way as he finished his career with 282 career stops. Following the defensive back in the 100 career tackle club were linebacker Kenneth Kemp (163 career tackles) and fellow defensive back Shane Lancaster (162 career stops). Entering the 2006 season, Liberty has just one player on its active roster with more than 100 career tackles as senior linebacker Manny Rojas leads the squad with 272 career stops. Rojas finished 2005 with a career-high 102 tackles. The only two coaches to post victories in their first game as Liberty's head coach were John Cartwright (1974) and Sam Rutigliano (1989) Coach Results Opponent Date Lee "Rock" Royer L/ Massanutten Military (Lynchburg, Va.) 9/27/73 John Cartwright W/ Washington & Lee (Lexington, Va.) 9/23/74 Tom Dowling L/ Chowan (Murfreesboro, N.C.) 9/10/77 Morgan Hout L/ Towson State (Lynchburg, Va.) 9/8/84 Sam Rutigliano W/ Edinboro (Lynchburg, Va.) 9/9/89 Ken Karcher L/ East Tennessee State (Lynchburg, Va.) 9/2/00 Getting Off To A Great Start At Home The Flames enter today's game with a 17-3 mark in home openers over the last 20 seasons, which includes three-straight victories in home openers while the Flames have won four out of their last five home openers. Overall in the 33-year history of the Flames' football program, Liberty has posted a record in its first home contest of the season, including a 12-4 mark since moving to Williams Stadium. The last time that Liberty and St. Paul's squared off in a Flames' home opener was on September 13, 1975 (the first meeting in the series) and Liberty walked away with a victory. New Faces On The Sidelines First-year head coach Danny Rocco has added four new faces to the Flames' coaching staff since taking over the program last December. Rocco has brought in a new offensive coordinator in Scott Wachenheim and a new defensive coordinator in Tom Clark. Rocco also added a new quarterbacks coach in Brandon Streeter and a new defensive line/special teams coach in Chad Wilt. Remaining from last year's staff are Pete Sundheim (assistant head coach/tight ends), Frank Hickson (running backs), Marshall Roberts (defensive backs), Charlie Skalaski (wide receivers/recruiting coordinator) and Robert Wimberly (linebackers). Wachenheim Brings New Ways To Flames' Offense For the first time in over a decade, the Flames will be running a two-back offense as new offensive coordinator Scott Wachenheim has brought the offensive scheme back to Liberty. The last time that Liberty ran a two-back set was during the 1994 and 1995 seasons with Lawrence Worthington and J.T. Morris, and the tandem proved to be successful as Worthington finished his career with 2,723 yards rushing which ranks third in school history. Wachenheim comes to Liberty after spending the previous 12 seasons at Rice, including his last five years as offensive coordinator. Wachenheim helped Rice build a dominant ball-control offense that ranked among the nation's best during his tenure. During the 2004 season, Rice led the nation in rushing offense (306.5 yards per game), while the Owls' 2003 squad ranked second in the country, racking up a school record of 3,800 rushing yards. In 2001, Wachenheim's direction enabled Rice to break the school record for points scored (333) and total offense (4,846 yards). Bold Indicates 2006 opponent

As part of the yearly ceremony, the conference announced its preseason all-conference teams and the preseason players of the year. Five members of the Flames football program were named to the preseason allconference squad. Offensively, sophomore running back/quarterback Zach Terrell, last year's Big South Rookie of the Year, was joined by junior tight end Chris Luck on the preseason all-conference team, which is voted on by the league's head coaches, sports information directors and media panel. Liberty's defensive selections were led by a pair of senior team captains as defensive lineman Jason Horn and linebacker Manny Rojas were named to the squad. The two elder defensive players were joined by sophomore defensive back Patrick Calvary, who had a breakout freshman season for the Flames last year. Red Zone Report Last year, the Flames converted on 17-of-29 Red Zone scoring opportunities (58.6 percent) on the season as Liberty scored 10 rushing touchdowns, three passing touchdowns and converted on four field goal attempts inside their opponent's 20-yard line. The Flames have only played one overtime game away from Williams Stadium, which was the team's first extra period game, a loss at Morgan State on September 21, Liberty's last victory in an overtime contest came on November 22, 2003, when it closed out the 2003 campaign with a win over Hofstra. Looking To Halt A Streak Liberty enters Thursday evening's game riding a 10-game losing streak, the longest losing streak in school history. Prior to the current streak, Liberty's longest losing streak was nine games as the Flames dropped the first nine contests to open the 1981 season. Liberty's 10-game slide to close out the 2005 campaign marked the fourth-longest active losing streak among NCAA I-AA programs. Butler and Indiana State lead the nation as both programs have dropped their last 17 games, while Savannah State ranks third as the Tigers enter 2006 riding a 14-game losing streak. Long Snapper Matt Skeen, Sr., Gardner-Webb What's Cooking In The Press Box The media meal served prior to the start of the Flames' season opener against St. Paul's on Thursday evening will be served by Sundae Grill, who will be cooking fresh hamburgers on site as they cater to several different groups during the game. A trio of I-A players joined the program last January as running back Rashad Jennings transferred from Pittsburgh, linebacker Stevie Ray Lloyd transferred from Virginia Tech and offensive lineman Zach Davis transferred from East Carolina. More recently, Rocco has added a pair of players he recruited as high school stars as offensive lineman Eddie Pinigis and defensive lineman/linebacker Vince Redd have both transferred from Virginia. Jennings, Lloyd and Pinigis are slated to start for the Flames' in the opener against St. Paul's, while Davis will serve in a back-up role. Redd will most likely sit out this year to clear up some eligibility issues. A Rookie Year Worth Remembering Zach Terrell became the first player in school history to be named Big South Rookie of the Year last year, while garnering the same award from VaSID (Virginia Sports Information Directors Association) as he was named the top freshman in the Commonwealth last year. Terrell, who was named to this year's Big South preseason all-conference team, finished his first year with the Flames by rushing for 668 yards. The total broke the school record for rushing yards by a freshman in a season as he surpassed Dre Barnes' mark of 654 yards in The running back became the 22nd player in school history to record multiple career 100-yard games as he finished the season with a pair of 100-yard games. Most notable was his 241 yards against Chattanooga, which ranks fifth best in school history and garnered him national Offensive Player of the Week honors from Don Hansen's Football Gazette. No Sophomore Slump For These Two Brandon Turner and Wynton Jackson posted a pair of the best sophomore seasons in school history last year as the duo of wideouts finished with a combined 1,109 receiving yards, which was just over 50 percent of Liberty's total receiving yards on the season (2,190 yards). Turner led the squad with 594 yards receiving to garner a spot on the Big South second-team all-conference squad. His 594 yards ranked as the second-most receiving yards in a year by a sophomore, while ranking third in the league and 89th in the nation by averaging 54.0 yards receiving per game. Jackson followed suit behind his fellow wideout as he finished the year with 511 yards receiving on 37 catches. His total yardage ranked as the fifth-most receiving yards in a season by a sophomore, while ranking sixth in the league in receiving yards per game (46.5) and seventh in receptions (3.36). Award Winning Spring For Journeyman Lands Him A Home Chris Stokes looks like he has finally found a home on the Flames' roster as he is slated to start at fullback for the Flames this year. The redshirt junior has played several different positions during his career at Liberty, but he impressed the coaching staff during spring practice so much with his blocking ability that he garnered the team's Samkon Gado award for Most Improved Player of the Year. Stokes becomes the first fullback in recent history for the Flames as Liberty's last fullback J.T. Morris was a member of the squad during the 1994 and 1995 seasons. Morris helped paved the way for running back Lawrence Worthington who finished his career with 2,723 yards to rank third on the Flames' all-time rushing list. In 1994, Worthington rushed for 1,224 yards, the third-best single-season mark in school history, while he ran for 974 yards in 1995.

Smith completed 48-of-97 pass attempts for 814 yards, ranking as the thirdmost passing yards in school history by a freshman hurler. Smith became just the sixth player in school history to post back-to-back games with 250 yards of total offense, doing so against Gardner-Webb (252 yards) and Charleston So. (315 yards). He also became the eighth player in school history to record a 300-yard passing game when he threw for 315 yards against the Buccaneers by completing 20-of-31 pass attempts. Flames "Luck"y To Have Chris Back Again Chris Luck posted one of the best tight end seasons in school history last year as he finished third on the team with 239 yards receiving on 24 receptions. The sensational season didn't go unnoticed either as he was named to the Big South second-team allconference squad. Luck's 239 yards ranks as the most yards recorded by a tight end since Peter Foy finished the 1998 season with 265 yards on 19 catches. Luck did a lot of his damage against conference foes as he averaged 40.3 yards per game against Big South opponents, including eight catches for 66 yards against Gardner-Webb and five receptions for a career-best 71 yards against Charleston Southern. Horn Has His Way In First Year With Flames Jason Horn made an immediate impact on the Flames' roster last year after transferring to Liberty from Glendale Community College in Glendale, Ariz., as he finished his inaugural season with Liberty with 61 tackles to lead all defensive linemen on the year. The 61 total tackles grabbed the attention of several different groups as Horn was named to the Big South first-team all-conference squad and the VaSID second-team allstate team. He led the Big South in tackles by a defensive lineman, averaging 5.5 tackles per game, finishing the season ranked tied for 54th in the nation in tackles for a loss (1.18 per game). Manny Carries On Linebacker Tradition For the fifth year in a row, a linebacker finished as the team's leading tackler as Manny Rojas led the squad last year with a career-high 102 tackles. And the team captain enters the season looking to keep another trend alive as the previous four seasons were led by two players in successive years. Kendrick Howard led Liberty in tackles in 2001 (91 tackles) and 2002 (113 tackles) and Nick Vaughn led the team in tackles in 2003 (87 tackles) and 2004 (105 tackles). Rojas' 102 tackles last year garnered him a spot on the Big South second-team allconference squad, while ranking fifth in the conference in tackles in conference games (9.3 per game) and 53rd overall in tackles per game. The linebacker finished with seven or more tackles in all but one game, including a four-game stretch in which he recorded double-figure tackles. Rojas enters the season ranked tied for sixth in Big South Conference history along with Coastal Carolina s Maurice Simpkins with 272 career tackles, while he needs 37 more tackles to surpass VMI's Justin Huggard who finished his career with a leaguebest 308 stops in Patrick Puts His Mark On Liberty In Just One Season Patrick Calvary put together a stellar freshman season for the Flames last year as he saw playing time in all 11 games as a true freshman, starting the last nine games of the year. The rookie finished the season with 45 tackles, which helped him earn Big South second-team all-conference honors. Calvary ranked ninth in the Big South in tackles by a defensive back and second among freshman defensive backs. Calvary led the team with 10 pass breakups, including one in five-straight games, while ranking second in the league with 11 passes defended (10 pass breakups and an interception). He also led the squad and ranked fourth in the Big South in fumble recoveries (2).

8 Interview Policies Liberty University head football coach Danny Rocco has requested a 24-hour notice on all interviews, including interviews for himself, members of the coaching staff and the players. Please plan ahead and call the Office of Athletic Media Relations when requesting interviews. All efforts will be made to make sure that the requested individual(s) are available with prior notice. Preseason camp interview schedule: Players and coaches are available after each practice session for post-practice interviews for a designated amount of time. If you need to conduct an interview during a different time, please contact the Office of Athletic Media Relations for alternate plans. However, due to the rigorous time schedule of preseason camp, it is requested that every effort be made to conduct following practice sessions. Regular season interview schedule during game week: Head coach Danny Rocco, members of football coaching staff and players are available for interviews Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of game weeks. Tuesday interviews: Head coach Danny Rocco will host a weekly media press conference each Tuesday during the season to address the media. The press conference will be held in a designated area in the Williams Football Operations Center. The press conference will start at 1 p.m. and run for 30 minutes. LIBERTY UNIVERSITY Big Shoes To Fill Kickers Ben Beasley and Zac Kolegue have their work cut out for them this year as the duo will be tasked with filling a large vacancy left open by the graduation of Noah Crouch. The Big South first-team all-conference selection led the conference and ranked 30th in the country by averaging 39.6 yards per punt, while the Flames finished the season ranked seventh in the country in net punting (36.60 yards). Crouch finished his four-year career with Liberty ranked fifth all-time in Liberty's punting statistics with 191 punts for 7,299 yards, while his 38.2 yards per punt average ranks third best in school history. Last year, Beasley recorded one of the team's 51 total punts as he booted a 50 yarder against Concord in the Flames' season opener. A Picture Perfect Season Zac Kolegue finished the 2005 season a perfect 17-of-17 on point after attempts, helping the kicker finish second on the team last year in scoring with 20 points (also had one field goal on the year). The junior has connected on 98.0 percent of his PAT during his career (48-of-49) as the lone miss during his career came against Charleston Southern on October 30, Kolegue enters the game having connected on 33-straight point after attempts, which ranks tied for third in school history as Jay Kelley also connected on 33-consecutive PAT during the seasons. Rod Gladfelter ( ) ranks second in school history with 38-straight PAT, while Mark DeMoss ( ) connected on an impressive 92-consecutive PAT during his four-year career with Liberty. Requested players and members of the coaching staff can be available for one-on-one interviews following Coach Rocco's weekly press conference. Player/coaching staff interviews will start at 1:30 p.m. and will run for 30 minutes. However, players will not be asked to miss class time or any other academic/team requirements for these interviews. Wednesday and Thursday interviews: Head coach Danny Rocco, members of the coaching staff and players will be available after practices on Wednesday and Thursday. If you request an interview, you are advised to arrive at least 15 minutes before the scheduled finish time of practice just in case practice finishes early. Coach Rocco, members of the coaching staff and players will not be held if you are not present at the conclusion of practice. Postgame interviews: The Liberty University football locker room is closed to members of the media at all times, both at home and on the road. Home postgame interviews: Head coach Danny Rocco and requested players/members of the coaching staff will be available after a brief 10-minute cooling off period after each home game. Interviews will be conducted in a designed area inside of the Williams Football Operation Center, beginning with Coach Rocco followed by requested players/members of the coaching staff. Media members will be escorted down on the field by a member of the Athletic Media Relations staff with approximately five minutes left in the fourth quarter. After the team leaves the playing field and enters the locker room, a member of the Athletic Media Relations staff will escort the media to the designated interview area. Road postgame interviews: Head coach Danny Rocco and requested players/members of the coaching staff will be available after a brief 10-minute cooling off period after each road game. Coach Rocco and requested players/member of the coaching staff will be available for interviews outside of the locker room or in a designated interview area (if one is available). A member of the Athletic Media Relations staff will escort the members of the media to the designated interview area. Liberty-St. Paul's Game Sponsored By TAP As The Western Virginia Educational Classic During the summer, the Liberty University Athletics Department entered into a partnership with Total Action Against Poverty (TAP), a Roanoke-based non-profit organization that will be sponsoring the Flames' season opener against St. Paul's. The contest will serve as the organization's annual Western Virginia Educational Classic. The WVEC was founded in September 2000 to raise funds to address dropout problems in the Roanoke Valley. With more than 500 students dropping out of schools each year, TAP established a dropout retrieval program, Project Recovery, to locate area dropouts and convince them to return to their educational pursuits or an alternative educational setting. TAP formed a partnership with Radford University and Roanoke City Schools. Radford provided interns through its School of Social Work, while Roanoke City Schools provided Project Recovery with a dropout list. However, the missing link was still funding for the project. City of Roanoke Councilman Sherman Lea, a Regional Director of Community Corrections, served as co-chairman of the Roanoke City School Board and TAP Board of Directors at the time Project Recovery was started. Councilman Lea's professional and community involvement led him to work with Annette Lewis, VP of Programs at TAP and Director of Project Recovery, her staff and a steering committee to establish the first WVEC which was held September 2000 in Roanoke, Va. As a result of the funds raised by the WVEC, Project Recovery has helped 518 students return to their educational pursuits. Six NCAA Division II football games later, the WVEC Steering Committee is thankful to have the first Division 1-AA WVEC game at Liberty University today. The Commonwealth of Virginia is fortunate to have an institution like Liberty because of its well-rounded academic and athletic opportunities; and TAP is fortunate to have Liberty as a dropout retrieval partner. In addition to helping retrieve high school dropouts, TAP operates one of 19 statewide dropout prevention college access programs called Project Discovery. Through Project Discovery, over 7,000 first-generation high school students have enrolled in post-secondary education. TAP looks forward to bringing Project Discovery students to Liberty for campus tours to share the wide range of opportunities available.
