Breanna Richardson and Victoria Vivians averaged 15.3 points each to lead the squad. Chinwe Okorie topped the team on the boards, averaging 9.3 per contest to go with 9.0 points. MSU PICKED 8TH; ALWAL AN ALL-SEC PICK League coaches and media both predicted Mississippi State to finish 8th in the SEC. The Dawgs were rated just behind LSU and ahead of Florida, Auburn, Missouri, Arkansas, and. The 29-point performance is tied for the 2ndbest by an SEC player this season and the best by a league freshman. It is the fifth-most points by a Bulldog rookie, eclipsing the 28 by Tysheka Grimes against South Carolina in William is 7th in the SEC at the free-throw line, knocking down 34 of 41 for 82.9%. She also dishes to teammates at a 4.8 clip that is 4th in the SEC. Her 3.0 steals average is also 4th. CHAPEL ON THE RISE Sophomore Ketara Chapel joined Vivians on the WNIT All-Tournament Team after averaging 12.5 points in the four games. She matched William with a team-high 17 points in Sunday's championship game after claiming her 1st double-double against No. 16 West Virginia with personal highs of 19 points and 11 boards. That personal best bettered her previous best of 14 points set in the season opener against Mercer. Chapel is shooting 69.4% from the floor this season, 3rd in the SEC and 9th in Division I. She is 10 of 12 (83.3%) at the line this season, making her 26 of her last 30 (86.7%) from the stripe going back to last year. Chapel already has four double-digit scoring games after having just three all last season. A year ago he became the only MSU coach to reach 20 wins and the postseason in year two, and he joined Collins (16-14 in ) as the only coaches to post winning records in the second season. His 2nd MSU squad made a 9-win improvement from year one, which is the 2nd-best improvement among the SEC coaches at their current schools. Andy Landers' second Georgia squad ( ) won 27 games a year after winning 16. Last year's WNIT berth was the 15th time in the last 17 seasons that Schaefer has taken a team to the postseason. Sunday's win was the 2nd time he has won a WNIT title (1999, Arkansas). BLAIR BOMBS AWAY Schaefer's daughter Blair had her best outing of the young season Tuesday, scoring 11 points with 9 coming off the first trio of 3-pointers of her career. She is a perfect 8 for 8 from the free-throw line. W FOR SERRA There was an empty seat on the bench for the Nov. 14 opener in memory of Serra Pearson, who passed away a day earlier at age 16 following a courageous battle with autoimmune autonomic ganglionopathy, a rare blood disorder with only 80 known cases. The Bulldogs visited her in August as part of Make- A-Wish, and during that visit she was invited to be guest coach for the season opener. In her memory, MSU wore special shooting shirts and placed roses on her chair on the bench. PRESEASON WNIT CHAMPIONS Round 1 Nov. 14/15 Round 2 Nov. 16/17 Semifinals Nov. 20 The selection is the highest by the coaches since the squad was picked to finish 3rd. Senior Martha Alwal was tabbed by both as a 1st team preseason All-SEC pick. GRANT A GO! Senior Kendra Grant returned to the court from an injury Tuesday and scored 4 points in 6 minutes. Grant has 987 points for her career, just 13 points from joining MSU's 1,000-point club. Martha Alwal joined the club last season. She has 1,063 points in her MSU career, 18th in program annals. MARTHA MAKES STRIDES Alwal is the SEC's active leader in career blocks (257), rebounds (824) and double-doubles (31). She set the school's career blocks record last season while tying the single-season mark. Alwal is 2nd among active NCAA Division I players in swats.
