The teams met Jan. 6 in Starkville, with the Gamecocks escaping with a win in the MSU s home SEC opener. That earlier win by South Carolina was its third-straight in the series, but MSU leads the overall tally Prior to USC s win streak, MSU had won four-consecutive meetings from The Bulldogs head to Columbia following a win against Alabama at home on Thursday. South Carolina had an open date following last Sunday s win at Ole Miss. Thursday s 24-point win is the largest margin of victory for State this season. That is something Schaefer has done at every stop in his coaching career, including his most recent stops at Arkansas and Texas A&M. He has helped construct winners by teaching intense, high-pressure defense, and compiling some of the nation s top-ranked recruiting classes. In those 15 seasons in Fayetteville and College Station, Schaefer s defenses helped his squads to the postseason all but once (his first season at Texas A&M) while averaging 22 wins a year. Schaefer, who has been part of 413 wins in his 25-year collegiate coaching career, has become one of the nation s premier teachers of defense, earning the moniker the Secretary of Defense. His defenses helped Arkansas and Texas A&M to 11 NCAA Tournament appearances. In his first season in Fayetteville, the Razorbacks advanced to the Final Four before making three more trips to the second round. With his alma mater, he won a national championship while helping the program to a pair of Sweet 16 appearances, an Elite Eight showing, two trips to the second round and a first-round berth. In his nine years as associate head coach to friend and mentor Gary Blair at Texas A&M, his teams consistently were atop the Big 12 in turnovers caused, steals, turnover margin and assist-to-turnover ratio. In 2011, his smothering defense topped the nation in turnover margin en route to guiding the Aggies to the NCAA national championship in the program s first trip to the Women s Final Four. That squad also earned Texas A&M s first No. 1 national ranking while finishing the season with a 33-5 record, the most wins in school history. The following season, his final Texas A&M squad finished first in the Big 12 in turnover margin en route to advancing to a fifth-straight conference tournament title game and the Sweet 16 in the team s seventh-consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. Schaefer was also part of Texas A&M squads that won two Big 12 Tournament titles (2010 & 2008) and the conference regular season title in In addition to the 2011 national championship, Schaefer helped coach the Aggies to the 2009 Sweet 16 and the 2008 Elite Eight. Not only has Schaefer proven himself as one of the nation s premier defensive coaches, but he has also been one of the top recruiters in women s basketball, helping ink nine Top 20 recruiting classes during his tenures at Texas A&M and Arkansas. His strong reputation as a coach and recruiter earned him BasketballScoop.com s 2009 Assistant Coach of the Year. While at Texas A&M, he played an integral role in the Aggies finishing among the country s Top 10 signing classes four-straight years. His final class with the Aggies rated as the nation s No. 2 signing class, and he helped land the nation s top class during the 2011 national championship run. In addition to 2012 s No. 2 class and 2011 s top-rated class, the Aggies 2010 signing class ranked No. 5 nationally and tops in the Big 12. A year earlier, he helped ink the Big 12 s No. 2 class and the sixth-best in the country. In 2007, Schaefer earned the opportunity to coach the United States William Jones Cup Team, leading that squad to a bronze medal in Taipei, Taiwan. He also joined with Athletes in Action to coach some of the top women s college players in the nation. The only associate head coach to be named head coach of the USA Jones Cup Team, Schaefer guided Team USA to a 4-2 record in pool play with wins against Japan, New Zealand, Korea and Chinese Taipei. The opportunity to earn international coaching experience came a year after Schaefer helped lead the Aggies to the first round of the NCAA Tournament. That season saw the program finish third in the Big 12, its highest finish at the time, and sign the Aggies first McDonald s All-American. The season saw Texas A&M advance to the WNIT Elite Eight, the first postseason appearance under Blair and Schaefer. That season, Schaefer helped ink the nation s 20th-best signing class, a year after their initial class rated No. 27 in the country. Schaefer had the opportunity to accompany Blair to his alma mater following a six-year stint as associate head coach at Arkansas from During that run, he helped the Razorbacks to four NCAA Tournament appearances, including a Final Four berth in his inaugural season. The following year, Arkansas went on to claim the WNIT national championship. While in Fayetteville, he helped tutor Shameka Christon, who would go on to earn SEC Player of the Year and First Team All-SEC honors. Schaefer went to Arkansas after serving as head women s coach at Sam Houston State from In his nextto-last season there, he was tabbed the Southland Conference Coach of the Year after leading the Bearkats to their most wins in a decade (18). During his tenure at SHS, he tutored either the SLC s Freshman or Newcomer of the Year in three of his final four seasons. In his first year at the school ( ), he coached Sierena Autman to Southland Conference Player of the Year accolades. A native of Austin, Texas, Schaefer served as a men s assistant coach at Sam Houston State ( ) between stints as the assistant boys basketball coach and head tennis coach at Houston s Milby High School. As a player, Schaefer was an all-state performer at Houston Lutheran High School before going on to play two seasons at Alvin Community College. Schaefer is a dedicated family man. He is married to the former Holly Davis, who played basketball at Arkansas State and later served as an assistant coach at UT Arlington. The couple has 17-year-old twins, Blair Nicole and Charles Logan. MISSISSIPPI STATE NUMERICAL ROSTER No. Name Pos. Ht. Cl. Exp. 4 LAST TIME OUT BULLDOGS DOMINATE THE GLASS Mississippi State never trailed Thursday night as it posted its largest margin of victory with a win against Alabama at Humphrey Coliseum. The Bulldogs were dominant inside, out-scoring the Tide in the paint and in second-chance opportunities. State used an early 8-0 run to take a 10-point lead. The Dawgs pushed it to 12 before Alabama answered and cut the deficit to five, 25-20, but would get no closer as the Bulldogs took a 10-point lead to halftime. The Bulldogs went up in the second half before putting the game out of reach with a 13-0 run. During that stretch, State kept Alabama without a field goal for more than six minutes. Redshirt sophomore Carnecia Williams paced Mississippi State with 25 points, one away from matching her career high. Sophomore Martha Alwal added her 14th double-double of the year as she scored 18 points and pulled down 15 rebounds. She also blocked a season-high eight shots. Fellow sophomore Kendra Grant added 11 points for MSU. The Bulldogs dominated Alabama on the glass Thursday night, claiming a advantage. The +15 margin is State s largest since notching a +17 advantage against Florida Atlantic on Dec. 7. State s 55 boards are the most since it hauled in 65 in the season-opening win against Houston. Mississippi State claimed 20 of its 55 rebounds on the offensive glass. That is also the most since the team recorded 30 against Houston. It s the most offensive rebounds in SEC play since the team hauled in 22 against Vanderbilt in the opening round of the SEC Tournament. The Dawgs made the offensive boards count, putting in a season-best 28 second-chance points. State claimed the rebounding advantage for the first time since the Troy game (Dec. 29). MSU is 6-0 this season when out-rebounding its opponent. BULLDOG GAME-BY-GAME STARTERS Opponent Guard Guard Guard Forward Forward Record Houston May Gaynor Grant Alwal C. Sophomore Martha Alwal recorded eight of those swats. The 11 blocks are tied for the second-most this season behind the SEC-best 13 the team had against Florida Atlantic on Dec. 7. Thursday s tally matches Tennessee (at South Carolina on Jan. 3) for the most in league play this year, and it is the most blocks by MSU in an SEC game since the squad rejected 12 against Ole Miss (Jan. 11, 2009). As a team, the Bulldogs rate third in the SEC and No. 27 nationally with 5.0 blocks per game this season. ALWAL LEADS THE SWAT TEAM Alwal s eight-block performance against Alabama was a season high for the Worthington, Minn., native. It tied her own mark against Mississippi Valley State last season for the third-most in single-season history, and was the sixth time she placed her name on MSU s single-game Top 10 blocks list. Over the entire season, she is second in the SEC and No. 15 in the nation with 2.6 blocks per game. Against conference foes, Alwal tops the league with 2.8 swats per contest. Her 67 blocks are a new MSU sophomore record, eclipsing the previous best set by Cara Stokes in the season. The tally is also the fourthmost in a season, right behind her freshman tally of 82. In the Jan. 13 contest at LSU, she eclipsed former MSU All-American Tan White for second place on the Bulldogs career blocks list. MSU CAREER BLOCKS LIST No. Player...Games Blocks B/G 1. MARTHA TOPS SEC IN DOUBLE-DOUBLES Alwal is making a strong case for SEC Defensive Player of the Year and All-SEC honors with her vigorous pace of collecting double-doubles this season. Thursday night she added her SEC-leading 14th of the season with 18 points and 15 boards. Her double-double tally rates one better than Texas A&M s Kelsey Bone and is tied for 17th in the nation. Alwal s 14 double-doubles are the most in a season by a Bulldog player since LaToya Thomas recorded 12 in the season. She became the first Bulldog since Tan White in 2005 to record three-straight double-doubles when she achieved the feat against Arkansas, Missouri and Ole Miss earlier this month. As a freshman, Alwal had three double-doubles, all coming in non-conference play. She now has eight in State s 13 SEC games this season. ALWAL CLEANS THE GLASS Alwal also notched her 16th game with 10-plus boards. She leads the SEC in double-figure rebounding, two better than Bone of Texas A&M. Her 9.8 rebounding average is second-highest in the league behind Bone and 49th nationally. She is also second in SEC games, hauling down 10.0 per contest. Alwal s 256 rebounds are 10th most by an MSU player in a season. She tops the SEC with 6.7 defensive boards per game. Her 18 boards against Houston are the most in the SEC this season. 5 twitter.com/mstatewbk Facebook.com/mstatewbk 5

6 STATE GETS TO THE LINE The Bulldogs were aggressive at getting to the rim Thursday night, and it paid off with 27 free-throw attempts. That tally is the most by MSU in league play this season. KENDRA LOGGING THE MINUTES Grant has been an Iron Woman on the court this season for the Bulldogs, averaging an SEC fourth-most 34.2 minutes. She is playing the sixth-most minutes in SEC play at State converted 20 of those chances, raising its free-throw percentage to an SEC fourth-best 70.2 percent. Individually, Alwal is fourth in the SEC at the line (78 percent). She is 92-of-118 at the line this year after going 25-of-42 (59.5 percent) at the stripe last season. The Dawgs set a school free-throw record with an 18-for-18 performance (100 percent) against UC Santa Barbara in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, on Nov. 21. GRANT LOOKING FOR REPEAT SUCCESS VS. TIDE Sophomore Kendra Grant continued her stellar year with 11 points against Alabama. She is tied with Alwal for the team scoring lead with 12.2 ppg this season. She scored 16 points in the season s second matchup against Ole Miss. That tally eclipsed her previous best of 22 set in the season-opening victory against Houston on Nov. 9. Grant has started to take the ball to the rim more. After attempting pointers and making 41 (28.7 percent) as a freshman, she is 17-of-45 this year for a team-best 37.8 percent. She is 77-of-115 (67 percent) from the free-throw line this season after going 30-for-42 (71.4 percent) as a freshman. DEFENSE SPARKS VICTORIES In its wins, Mississippi State has held foes to 32.3 percent from the field and 21.3 percent from 3-point range. The Dawgs had their best defensive showing of the season against Alabama, limiting the Tide to 26.2 percent shooting. In this season s setbacks, opponents have connected on 43.8 percent from the floor and 33.1 percent from beyond the arc. Defense sparked back-to-back wins against Arkansas and Missouri. State held Missouri to 6-for-23 (26.1 percent) from the field in the second half and a season second-lowest 3-of-20 (15 percent) from 3-point range for the game. A week earlier, MSU held Arkansas to 5-of-24 shooting (20.8 percent) and 14 points in the first half. Arkansas 14 first-half points were the fewest in a half against an SEC foe since the season when the Bulldogs held Alabama to the same amount in a win. Last year s squad held Jacksonville State to 13 first-half points on 4-of-27 (14.8 percent) shooting in the season opener. DAWGS HIT CLUTCH FREEBIES AT MIZZOU Mississippi State held off Missouri thanks to clutch free-throw shooting.
