The Lady Jaguars spent Thanksgiving weekend in San Antonio, Texas, where they defeated Texas-San Antonio and Utah. USA is averaging 61.7 points per game this season, and they have a stellar defensive ballclub, forcing opponents into nearly 22 turnovers a game. Camille Reynolds has been the spark off the bench for South Alabama, leading the team with 14.5 ppg and tying for the top mark in steals with eight. Taylor Ammons, a 5.7 ppg scorer, tops the Lady Jaguars on the boards with 7.5 per game. FANNING-OTIS ONE W AWAY FROM 600 Mississippi State head coach Sharon Fanning-Otis moved one win away from her 600th-career victory with Saturday s triumph at Savannah State. In her 36th season as a head coach, Fanning-Otis boasts a overall record (.574 winning percentage). Her tally in Starkville makes her the all-time wins leader in Lady Bulldog history. HOT-SHOOTING DIAMBER Senior Diamber Johnson had her run of consecutive games scoring in double figures halted at 13. Johnson scored eight points in Saturday s win at Savannah State. The Pontotoc, Miss., native opened the year with a career-best 30 points against Jacksonville State, the most points by an MSU player in the season opener since when LaToya Thomas notched 48 at Memphis. Johnson sits 298 points away from 1,000. She needs to average around 12.7 ppg over the final 23 games of the regular season to reach the mark. JOHNSON WITH THE ASSIST Johnson has not only been leading the Lady Bulldogs in scoring, but she has also paced the team in assists. After dishing out three assists versus Savannah State, Johnson now has 267 for her career, 26 out of 10th place all-time. ALWAL OFF TO STELLAR START Freshman Martha Alwal notched the third double-double of her young career Wednesday against Mississippi Valley State, pulling in 12 rebounds to go along with a season-high 17 points. That effort came less than a week after she set an MSU freshman record with 22 rebounds against Alcorn State. It bettered the previous best of 20 set by Sandra Butler against Alcorn State (2/28/83) and (1/24/83), and tied LaToya Thomas for fifth-highest in MSU single-game history (vs. Montana on Dec. 16, 2001). Ten of her boards came on offense against ASU, the first time an MSU player has grabbed 10 or more offensive rebounds in a game since Sophie Ratliff pulled in 12 en route to a school-record 26 total boards vs. Shorter College (Feb. 15, 1988). Alwal, who ranks second in the SEC with 10.7 rebounds per game, had 14 points and 11 rebounds in last Monday s win against Xavier, hours after being named SEC Freshman of the Week for an 11-rebound, 10-block debut against Jacksonville State on Nov. 11. Alwal s 10 swats against the Gamecocks set a new single-game school record, passing Chanel Mokango s nine against on Jan. 11, Alwal became the first Lady Bulldog freshman since Robin Porter (2006) to register a double-double. The last time a Lady Bulldog opened the year with back-to-back double-doubles was Sharon Thompson in Martha Alwal s blocks per game total that ranks third nationally. Also Porsha Porter s steals per game number that ranks 14th in NCAA Division I.

4 ALWAL SWATTING THE ROOKIE RECORDS Alwal finished two blocks shy of a triple-double Wednesday against Mississippi State. Her eight blocks against MVSU are two back of the top freshman mark she set vs. JSU. In addition to the singlegame rookie rebound record, she is just seven away from the MSU freshman single-season blocks record of 32 set by LaToya Thomas ( ). LADY BULLDOG BLOCK PARTY Alwal s 10 blocks against Jacksonville State led a block party for Mississippi State in the contest. The Lady Bulldogs swatted a school-record 14 shots, bettering the previous best of 13 set by the 2006 squad against Mississippi Valley State. Mississippi State has swatted an SEC-best 7.2 shots per game this season, with Alwal s 4.2 per-game average leading the league and rating third nationally. Alwal also ranks 24th nationally (2nd SEC) in rebounding with 10.7 per game, and 10th in double-doubles with three. PORTER SWIPING THE BASKETBALL Senior Porsha Porter has been averaging 12.5 ppg this season for the Lady Bulldogs, but her biggest mark has been made on defense, where she ranks second in the SEC with 4.2 steals per game. She swiped seven balls in the season opener against Jacksonville State, tying her for seventh-most in school annals. The Chicago native is nearly halfway to her total of 56. STOUT SECOND-HALF DEFENSE In its last two games, Mississippi State has stepped up the defensive intensity in the second half. Savannah State managed just three field goals over the final 20 minutes on Saturday en route to 25-percent shooting. On Wednesday, the Lady Bulldogs held MVSU to just 11.4-percent in the second half and 20.3-percent for the game, the lowest total allowed by MSU since they held -Pine Bluff to an 18.8 percentage last season. DIALING LONG DISTANCE Freshman Kendra Grant kept the Lady Bulldogs run of games with a three-point basket in tact on Saturday as she hit two of State s four shots from beyond the arc. MSU ran its streak of consecutive games with a three to 169-straight games. The last time MSU went without a basket from beyond the arc was an 0-for-8 outing Feb. 19, 2006, against. MSU NOTCHES HOME MILESTONE Friday s season-opening win against Jacksonville State gave the Mississippi State program its 300th home victory. The Lady Bulldogs are now all-time on the home court, including a mark under Sharon Fanning-Otis. MISSISSIPPI STATE OUT TO PROVE PRESEASON VOTERS WRONG MSU has a lot of motivation heading into the season. Despite returning four starters from last year s squad, including 77-percent of the offensive production, State was tabbed 11th in both the coaches and media SEC preseason polls. State was picked to finish ahead of in each poll.
