Head Coach Sharon Fanning is three wins shy of her 520th career win and six shy of her 200th win at MSU. Entering the season, Alexis Rack (331), Marneshia Richard (458) and Imesia Jackson (395) are all seeking the 500-point mark of their careers, while Robin Porter s (574) next scoring milestone is 1,000 points. Should Porter reach the mark during the next two seasons, she would become the 15th Lady Bulldog to eclipse the mark. With 125 assists during her sophomore campaign, Richard (193) is closing in on the MSU career assists list - #10 with 270 is Lisa Scott, MState returns all five starters from a year ago and 12 letterwinners from last year s 14-member squad. The only Lady Bulldogs not returning this season are Bethany Workman (student manager) and Heather Hollis (medical - concussion). Through the season, MState had played a total of 930 games and has 442 overall wins, 258 of those coming in Humphrey Coliseum. State faces three first-time opponents this season - Centenary, Iowa and Oklahoma and two former assistants - Steve Curtis (Centenary) and Errol Rogers (Louisiana-Lafayette). Three State alumni also return to Starkville as head coaches - Matthew Mitchell (Kentucky), Brooks Donald-Williams (McNeese St.) and Van Chancellor (LSU). When Fanning first came to Mississippi State University, she had a vision of building a quality Lady Bulldog basketball program. Time combined with hard work and dedication has paid off, as the program has reached national prominence since her arrival before the season. In November 2006, Fanning became the 29th NCAA Division I head coach to record 500 wins. During her tenure at MSU, Fanning has tutored two Kodak (now State Farm) all-americans in Tan White ( ) and LaToya Thomas ( ). As a senior, White led the nation in scoring, averaging 23.5 points per game, was named to the Associated Press s All-America Second Team, Frances Pomeroy Naismith recipient, all-sec First Team selection and became the SEC s all-time Career Steals Leader in addition to finishing atop five MSU career categories. She became the second Lady Bulldog to be drafted into the WNBA when she went as the No. 2 pick in the 2005 Draft to the Indiana Fever. In 2003, Thomas became just the sixth player in NCAA history to be named a Kodak (now State Farm) all- American four times. Becoming the first player to lead the SEC in scoring all four years of her career, Thomas was a four-time all-sec First Team and four-time Associated Press all- SEC First Team pick. During her career, Thomas led MSU to four NCAA Tournament appearances and to an appearance in the 2000 SEC Tournament title game. Becoming the sixth player under Fanning s tutelage to play in the professional ranks, she was the No. 1 pick in the 2003 WNBA Draft, going to the Cleveland Rockers. The pick made Thomas the first Lady Bulldog to be drafted into the WNBA and the first athlete from the state of Mississippi to be taken as the top pick in any professional draft. She currently plays for the Los Angeles Sparks. In 31 years of coaching, Fanning has coached 20 all-conference player selections and 11 all-america picks. In addition to Thomas and White, Fanning coached Sharon Thompson, the first Lady Bulldog to be drafted in the women s professional American Basketball League. Academically, the Lady Bulldogs have excelled off the court, as well. A total of 59 Lady Bulldogs have been named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll, including seven during the season. Fanning came to MSU no stranger to SEC basketball after serving eight seasons as the head coach at Kentucky ( ). She began her coaching career in 1976 at her alma mater, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. A member of UTC s Hall of Fame, Fanning served as Assistant Athletics Director and Head Volleyball Coach until 1978 before being promoted to the role of Coordinator of Women s Athletics until her departure for the Bluegrass State in Her coaching experience has not been limited to the collegiate level, as she has gained a great deal of experience coaching on the international level during her career. She served as Head Coach of the North team at the 1986 U.S. Olympic Festival before being selected to the staff of the United States Select team that played in Seoul, South Korea, in In 1988, Fanning assisted on the USA Junior National team that competed in the World Championship Qualifying Tournament in Sao Paulo, Brazil. A magna cum laude graduate of UTC in 1975, Fanning lettered each year in basketball and volleyball for the Lady Mocs, while serving as captain for both sports in Upon completion of her undergraduate degree at UTC, Fanning earned her master s degree from the University of Tennessee in 1976 and began her coaching career as a graduate assistant with Tennessee coach Pat Summitt. Fanning is active off the court where she is heavily involved in community affairs including serving as the spokesperson for the 2007 Oktibbeha County United Way campaign; hosting summer basketball camps and youth clinics and is in demand as a noted speaker. Fanning has served three terms on the Women s Basketball Coaches Association Board of Directors, two terms as Chair of the Kodak/WBCA All-America Committee and was a member of the Margaret Wade Player of the Year award committee. She currently represents the Southeastern Conference on the NCAA Women s Basketball Rules Committee. 5 PRESEASON MEDIA DAY SHARON FANNING INTERVIEWS ALL interviews with head women s basketball coach Sharon Fanning should be directed through the MSU Athletic Media Relations office. Please contact Cassie Chance at to arrange an interview time. The head coach prefers that all interviews be conducted in the mornings. Fanning is also generally available before or after practice, but media members must coordinate those opportunities through Chance. PLAYER INTERVIEWS Interviews with our players are encouraged; however, ALL interviews must be arranged through Cassie Chance in the Athletic Media Relations Office. This policy facilitates the orderly scheduling and completion of the desired interview. All player interviews must be arranged at least 24 hours in advance. Players are not available on gameday until following the NCAAmandated 10-minute cooling off period after the game. Please coordinate all requests with Chance. MSU Athletic Media Relations will not supply the media home or cellular telephone numbers for Lady Bulldog student-athletes. Likewise, training room, locker room and apartment/dormitory areas are considered private player areas and are off-limits to the media. PRACTICE COVERAGE All Lady Bulldog practices are CLOSED to the public. However, media officials wishing to speak with Head Coach Sharon Fanning or players may do so before or after scheduled practices provided a 24 hour notice has been given to the MSU Athletic Media Relations office. MEDIA PARKING Media parking is open anywhere in the vicinity of Humphrey Coliseum. Entrance to the Coliseum is recommended via the parking lot adjacent to Dudy Noble Field on the north end of the Coliseum. REAL-TIME INTERNET POLICY Mississippi State retains the rights to the distribution of play-by play, statistical material and photographs of MSU basketball during, and for 30 minutes following, game action, just as it retains the rights to the video and audio description of game action. The only games not covered by this satellite service are those televised contests where a feed will be available from the network. Postgame highlight feeds include highlights from both teams, as well as both coaches postgame interviews. MEDIA CREDENTIALS Arrangements for media credentials for Mississippi State s home basketball games must be made through the MSU Athletic Media Relations Office. Requests by accredited media members should be made in writing and submitted on company letterhead to Casise Chance (via mail: P.O. Box 5308, MSU, MS 39762, or by fax, ). Credential requests received via will only be granted to media representatives that regularly cover Mississippi State basketball or their weekly opponents. Priority for the issuance of credentials will be given to daily newspapers, radio stations and television stations which cover MSU on a regular basis. Due to space limitations, weekly publications, non-broadcasting radio representatives and online services may not be granted credentials. Student publications, radio stations and Websites that do not regularly cover MSU or its opponent, will be limited to one working media credential and/or one sideline photo pass, if applicable. Other credential requests will be filled on a space-available basis. Non-working spouses, dates, relatives, non-workers and anyone 18 years of age or younger are not permitted on press row. Media credential holders who violate this policy risk forfeiture of future credentials. Media credentials must be requested at least 48 hours prior to the requested game. Media credential holders on press row who are not actively covering the game, or credential wearers on the sideline who are not on assignment, will be asked to leave those respective areas. Press row or sideline security will be requested should the credential wearer not comply. Credentials used in an unauthorized manner will be revoked immediately, and news organizations who allow credentials to fall into improper hands will have the credentials revoked for the remainder of the year or the succeeding year, at the university s discretion. MSU is not responsible for securing credentials for road games. PHOTOGRAPHERS/VIDEOGRAPHERS MSU follows the guidelines established by the NCAA Communications Committee and the SEC regarding sideline control to insure the sideline is a working media area. The following guidelines are adhered to: 1) Each photographer is required to wear a media crendential at all times; 2) In accordance with NCAA policies, no freelance photographers will be credentialed; 3) Cutline writers, messengers and equipment carriers are not permitted in the photographer s area. Photo assistants or others holding a sideline pass must remain out of the photo area immediately adjacent to the playing court. This will insure that photographers/videographers have the appropriate working area; 4) Tripods are not permitted in photographer s area. Monopods are permissible; 5) The areas behind the team benches are considered bench areas and are to be used only for the passage between the court ends. This area may not be used as a photo zone. POSTGAME INTERVIEWS MSU officials will recognize the NCAA s 10-minute cooling-off period following each MSU game this season, home and away. Head Coach Sharon Fanning will be available for postgame interview purposes following each game in the media work room at the north end entrance to the Coliseum. MSU players will be available 10 minutes following the cooling off period in the media interview room. MSU players, however, may not be approached on the court following games for interviews. The visiting head coach and players will be available following the cooling-off period in the postgame interview room. This media opportunity will be coordinated by the visiting media relations director and MSU Media Relations personnel.
