Senior Mary Kathryn Govero is the lone senior returning as she averaged.2 points and 4.5 rebounds a year ago, starting all 34 games. Guard Diamber Johnson will play a pivitol roll in the starting lineup after coming off the bench in a key roll the last two seasons. Johnson has played in 66 career games, starting five. Junior college transfers Porsha Porter, Ashley Brown and Judith Tabala will look to make an early impact on the starting lineup. Head coach Sharon Fanning-Otis returns for her 6th season in Starkville. Assistants Greg Franklin, Franqua Bedell and Joey Burton return while assistant Wanika Owsley begins her first season in Starkville. LADY DOGS TO MEET USC UPSTATE FOR THE FIRST TIME When Mississippi State and USC Upstate tip their seasons off on Friday afternoon, it will be the first time the two have met in women s basketball action. The Spartans return three starters from last season s 20-9 team that finished third in the Atlantic Sun Conference. The Spartans finished with a 4-6 Conference record in USC Upstate is in five years under head coach Tammy George. USC Upstate is led by Preseason A-Sun Player of the Year Chelsea McMillan who averaged 4.2 points and 0.8 rebounds a game last season. Last season s A-Sun Freshman of the Year Tee Ara Copney returns after averaging.6 points and 3.2 rebounds a game. A QUICK LOOK BACK TO The season for the Lady Bulldogs was arguably the most successful in the history of the program. The Lady Bulldogs won two games in the NCAA Tournament, reaching the NCAA s Sweet 6 Round in Dayton, Ohio. With a 2-3 record and a third-place finish in the SEC, the Lady Bulldogs had much to celebrate. Seniors Alexis Rack, Armelie Lumanu and Chanel Mokango were all taken in the WNBA Draft and earned multiple postseason awards.
