All of Fanning s 520 career wins have come at the Division I level. LOOKING FOR FOUR IN A ROW MState is seeking to start the season 4-0 for the first time since the season. PUTTING IT AWAY The Lady Bulldogs have won their first three contests by an average of 16.7 points. The last time the Lady Bulldogs won three straight to open the season with a higher margin of victory was State opened 3-0 with a 22.7 point margin. LADY DOGS ALL-TIME IN NOVEMBER MSU is all-time during the month of November, including a mark during the Sharon Fanning era. Six of the Lady Bulldogs losses have come against nationally-ranked teams. AGAINST NON-CONFERENCE TEAMS All-time against non-conference teams, MSU is (.559). During the Sharon Fanning era, the Lady Bulldogs are (.667). SCOUTING MERCER The Bears enter Sunday afternoon s game 2-2 on the year, having dropped two straight including a set back to Southern Mississippi on Friday night. Mercer is led by junior guard and Mississippi native Shaquita Bell. Bell leads the team with 12.3 points per game, while Sarah Russell averages Kourtney Carter carries the team in rebounding, bringing down 6.5 boards each time out. Head Coach Janell Jones is in her first year at the helm of the program. AGAINST THE ATLANTIC SUN Mississippi State is 6-4 all-time against the Atlantic Sun Conference. State previously defeated Belmont this season. FANNING APPROACHING MSU WIN #200 MState Head Coach Sharon Fanning is three wins shy of her 200th win at Mississippi State MOVING ON UP Four current Lady Bulldogs are climbing the career leaders list in two all-time categories. Senior Imesia Jackson (429), junior Marneshia Richard (488) and sophomore Alexis Rack (363) are approaching the 500-career points mark, while Richard has 207 career assists, 63 shy of 10th on that list. Junior Robin Porter scored her 500th career point last season and now has 586 to her credit. LIGHTING IT UP Sophomore guard Alexis Rack ended her freshman campaign with 64 three-point field goals made. She is now eight shy of entering the career top 10 list. Of the former Lady Bulldogs on the list, Rack has the most three-pointers made as a freshman (Tan White had the previous-best of 53 three-pointers made). Of those 10, only Cynthia Hall (82 as a junior) and Angela Harris (89 as a senior) have a higher single-season total. 10-WIN SEASONS UNDER FANNING MSU has had win seasons and reached the postseason eight times under Sharon Fanning (four NCAA, four WNIT) (4-7 SEC, T8th) (1-11 SEC, T10th) (4-10 SEC, T9th) (7-7 SEC, T5th) (8-6 SEC, 5th) (4-10 SEC, T9th) (8-6 SEC, T4th) (10-4 SEC, T3rd) (7-7, T7th) (6-8 SEC, 6th) JACKSON EARNS PRESEASON NOD MSU senior forward Imesia Jackson was selected to the Southeastern Conference Preseason Coaches All-SEC Second Team. The Lady Bulldogs were voted to finish seventh among league teams in the coaches and media voting. FRESHMAN GOVERO NETS CAREER FIRST Freshman Mary Kathryn Govero tallied her first career double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds in 18 minutes played against Belmont. She becomes the first non-starter since Miayorka Johnson (12 points, 11 rebounds vs. Mississippi Valley, 11/26/06) to net a double-double (no known freshman non-starter has accomplished the feat in researchable history). JACKSON HITS THE BOARDS FOR CAREER HIGH Senior forward Imesia Jackson brought down a gamehigh 13 rebounds against Belmont to set a new career high in the category. Jackson s 13 boards are the most for a Lady Bulldog this season and the most since Robin Porter had 16 against Tulane last season. WASHINGTON STEALS AWAY CAREER HIGH With her five steals on against Southeastern Louisiana, sophomore Bethany Washington set a career high in the category. TAKING ONE FOR THE TEAM MState had a total of six charges taken by three different players already this season. FSN, CSS TO BROADCAST GAMES The Lady Bulldogs will play a total of four televised contests this season. State host Tennessee in a CSS telecast on Feb. 7 and Florida the following Sunday, Feb. 10 on Fox Sports South. The Lady Vols and MState are again on television on Feb. 24 in Knoxville. When Fanning first came to Mississippi State University, she had a vision of building a quality Lady Bulldog basketball program. Time combined with hard work and dedication has paid off, as the program has reached national prominence since her arrival before the season. In November 2006, Fanning became the 29th NCAA Division I head coach to record 500 wins. During her tenure at MSU, Fanning has tutored two Kodak (now State Farm) all-americans in Tan White ( ) and LaToya Thomas ( ). As a senior, White led the nation in scoring, averaging 23.5 points per game, was named to the Associated Press s All-America Second Team, Frances Pomeroy Naismith recipient, all-sec First Team selection and became the SEC s all-time Career Steals Leader in addition to finishing atop five MSU career categories. She became the second Lady Bulldog to be drafted into the WNBA when she went as the No. 2 pick in the 2005 Draft to the Indiana Fever. GAME #2 Sunday, November 11, 2007 Centenary 57 Mississippi State 76 Humphrey Coliseum (10,500) Starkville, Miss. GAME #3 Thursday, November 15, 2007 Mississippi State 66 Belmont 51 Curb Event Center (5,000) Nashville, Tenn. STARKVILLE, Miss. - The 34th season of Mississippi State women s basketball got off to a good start Friday night as the Lady Bulldogs beat Southeastern Louisiana to tip off the campaign. With the win MState improves to 32-2 in home openers and remains undefeated (13-0) in the Sharon Fanning era. The Lady Bulldogs overcame shooting woes in the first half to lead the Lady Lions at the half. MSU shot only 32 percent from the field and missed all nine of their attempts from three point range in the opening half. Marneshia Richard led the team with eight points at the break while Imesia Jackson had six. The Lady Bulldog defense was the story in first 20 minutes of play, forcing 18 turnovers, seven of which were steals. Mississippi State was able to score 13 points of Lady Lion miscues in the first half. In the second half, the MSU offense began to match the success of its defense. The Lady Bulldogs shot 50 percent from field and also ended their drought from behind the arc with two, three point buckets. Not to be unmatched, MSU defense continued to apply pressure to Southeastern Louisiana with seven more steals in the half. Bethany Washington led the team with 5, while five other Lady Bulldogs recorded at least one steal. Mississippi State was also able to control the boards as they outrebounded the Lady Lions 42-33, Imesia Jackson led all players with eight. Jackson was also the leading scorer for both squads with 19 points and just two rebounds shy of her fourth career double-double. State also had three others scoring in double figures: Marneshia Richard had 18, Tysheka Grimes with 14, and Bethany Washington contributed with 10. Bethany Washington led all scorers with 10 points at the break. Meanwhile, Imesia Jackson scored seven, helping MSU to an 16-8 point advantage in the paint. Mississippi State held the lead the entire second period, forcing Centenary into 21 percent shooting. The Lady Bulldogs would lead by as many as 22 in the second half, thanks to 21 points off the bench. MSU was led in scoring by guard Alexis Rack who scored 14 points, with 11 of those coming after the break. Mary Kathryn Govero tallied her first double-figure scoring game of her maroon and white career with 11 points. Bethany Washington added 10 for MState.
