FEBRUARY THE LAST TIME OUT Mississippi State dropped its first game of the season against Maryland on Tuesday, falling in College Park, Md. The Lady Bulldogs trailed by as much as 18 early in the second half but cut the lead to as low as five in the final minutes. Maryland outlasted State behind a 24 point performance from senior Kristi Toliver. For MSU, Alexis Rack led the way with 27 points. Tysheka Grimes and Robin Porter added 10 points a piece. SCOUTING UAB Led by fifth-year head coach Audra Smith, UAB is 5-7 this season. The Blazers are led in scoring by Britney Jones who is averaging 15.8 points a game. Sophomore Amanda Peterson is averaging 12.3 points a contest while Fatiha Salaam is adding 11.3 points a game. NEXT UP Following Friday s matchup with UAB, Mississippi State will have a quick turnaround as they prepare to face Xavier at home on Jan. 4. Xavier is 10-4 this season including wins over Indiana, LSU, Kentucky and Georgia. XU is led in scoring by Ta shia Phillips who is averaging 14.6 points a game and 11.7 rebounds a contest. CLOSING IN ON THE POLLS In the latest national polls, Mississippi State is receiving votes. In the AP Poll, MSU received three votes and in the ESPN/ USA Today Coaches Poll, State received one vote. NOT EVEN CLOSE Mississippi State s average margin of victory this season is 24.0 points a game. That mark is the best in the Southeastern Conference. STIFF IN FIELD GOAL PERCENTAGE DEFENSE Mississippi State currently ranks fourth in the SEC, allowing opponents to shoot 35.3 percent from the field. GUARDING THE BASKET State is currently fourth in the SEC in points allowed. MSU is giving up 53.9 points a game through 12 games. NATIONAL LEADER IN BLOCKS Mississippi State is currently averaging 7.1 blocks a game. In the latest national rankings, State was first. HEATING UP THE NETS Through the 12 games this season, Mississippi State is averaging 77.9 points a game. That ranks second among all Southeastern Conference teams and ninth nationally. SHARING THE ROCK State currently leads the SEC and is fourth nationally, averaging 17.3 assists a game. TAKING IT AWAY Mississippi State leads the Southeastern Conference and ranked sixth nationally in steals a game in the latest rankings. State is averaging 13.8 steals a game which was aided by 32 take aways earlier this season against Nicholls, a school record. ALSO THE BEST IN ASSIST/TURNOVER RATIO The Lady Bulldogs currently are tied for the lead in the SEC for the best assist/turnover ratio. State has a 1.10 assist/turnover ratio through their first 12 games. The Lady Bulldogs are ranked fifth in the nation in the latest NCAA rankings. SUCCESSFUL IN JANUARY GAMES In the Sharon Fanning era, Mississippi State is in January games. Last season, State was 4-4 in the month of January. ALL-TIME NON-CONFERENCE CONTESTS Mississippi State is (.562) all-time against non-conference opponents. Last season, the Lady Bulldog put up a 12-4 mark and were 8-1 in non-conference home matchups. This season, the Lady Bulldogs are RACK NAMED SEC PLAYER OF THE WEEK Mississippi State junior Alexis Rack earned SEC Player of the Week honors the week of Dec. 8 for her performance against Memphis. Rack had 19 points and five assists. She became the first Lady Bulldog to earn the honor since Tan White did so in

Fanning entered the 2008 season 19th alltime among active NCAA coaches. Among all coaches, Fanning started the season 30th and was just three wins shy of 27th.Fanning eclipsed the 500-win mark on Nov. 10, 2006 with a win against Troy. OVER 200 AND COUNTING Now in her 14th season at the helm of the Lady Bulldogs, Fanning has ammassed 221 wins. 10-WIN SEASONS UNDER FANNING MSU has had win seasons and reached the postseason nine times under Sharon Fanning (four NCAA, five WNIT). That ranks second among all SEC teams. STOPPING THE THREE Mississippi State is allowing opponents to shoot.323 from three-point range. SCHOOL BESTS AGAINST NICHOLLS Mississippi State set a school record forcing Nicholls into 32 steals and matched a school record, forcing 44 turnovers. LUMANU MAKING A SPLASH Junior transfer Armelie Lumanu has wasted no time in making a name for herself at MSU. In the first 12 games, Lumanu leads the team, averaging 14.1 points a game which is fifth among SEC players. Lumanu has also averaged 6.5 rebounds a contest and is averaging 3.4 assists and 3.1 steals a game. The Kinshasa, Congo native is shooting 52.5 percent from the field which is third-best among conference players. MOKANGO ALSO AMONG LEADERS Junior transfer Chanel Mokango has made 48 of 90 field goals this season (.533). Mokango has also been a force on the defensive end, leading the league with an average of 2.7 blocks a game this season.mokango ranked eighth nationally in blocks in the latest NCAA rankings. RACK AND LUMANU TAKING CARE OF THINGS Junior Alexis Rack is currently sixth among all Southeastern Conference players with a 1.5 assist/turnover ratio. Armelie Lumanu ranks seventh in the conference with a 1.3. RICHARD TO MISS EARLY GAMES Mississippi State senior guard Marneshia Richard is out indefinitely after having knee surgery during the offseason. Richard led State with 138 assists last season. The Lamar, Miss., native also averaged 9.8 points a game. WINNING WAYS AT THE HUMP Since the Humphrey Coliseum opened during the season, the Lady Bulldogs sport a (.634) record. Last season, State finished the season with an 11-5 record in the friendly confines of the Hump. They are 6-0 this season. HEAD COACH SHARON FANNING 14TH SEASON AT MISSISSIPPI STATE RD SEASON OVERALL Now in her 14th season at the helm of the Mississippi State women s basketball team, Sharon Fanning continues to guide the program to new heights. When Fanning first came to Mississippi State University, she had a vision of building a quality Lady Bulldog basketball program. Time combined with hard work and dedication has paid off, as the program has reached national prominence since her arrival before the season. In November 2006, Fanning became the 29th NCAA Division I head coach to record 500 wins. During her tenure at MSU, Fanning has tutored two Kodak (now State Farm) all-americans in Tan White ( ) and LaToya Thomas ( ). As a senior, White led the nation in scoring, averaging 23.5 points per game, was named to the Associated Press s All-America Second Team, Frances Pomeroy Naismith recipient, all-sec First Team selection and became the SEC s all-time Career Steals Leader in addition to finishing atop five MSU career categories. She became the second Lady Bulldog to be drafted into the WNBA when she went as the No. 2 pick in the 2005 Draft to the Indiana Fever. STARKVILLE, Miss. - Going into halftime with the game tied at 30 points a piece, the Mississippi State women s basketball team used a strong second half to power past the Peach State Elite team Thursday night at Humphrey Coliseum. MSU jumped out early in the first period of action, going on a 13-1 run with 15:39 minutes left in the half. Junior college transfers Armelie Lumanu and Chanel Mokango led the charge for the Lady Bulldogs, scoring the first six points of the game. The Elite fought back into the game, rattling off nine straight points to bring the game to State extended their lead though to on a layup by Lumanu and back-to-back 3-point baskets by junior Tysheka Grimes and senior Lauren Roberts. Peach State Elite then knocked down six consecutive free throws to bring the game within five at with 5:14 left in the first half of action. The Elite closed out the first half of play on a 5-1 run fueled by free throws by Nikki Luckhurst and a jumper Kadie Riverin. The Lady Bulldogs came out firing in the second half, going on a 6-2 run on made baskets by Lumanu, Mokango and sophomore Mary Kathryn Govero to extend their lead to Peach State Elite climbed back into the game, tying the game once again at 46 with 15:40 left in regulation. Seniors Donnisha Tate and Robin Porter both converted three-point plays to put MState up, Despite last minute efforts by the Elite, State was able to close out the victory MSU placed four in double figures, with Mokango leading State with 16 points and six rebounds. The Lady Bulldogs led from start to finish, racing past an out-manned squad from Arkansas- Pine Bluff at Humphrey Coliseum. The teams were tied 5-5 early before the hosts put together a 16-6 run for a lead. Mary Kathryn Govero provided a spark with back-to-back baskets during that run. The Lady Bulldogs also had a pair of blocks from newcomers Armelie Lumanu and Chanel Mokango during that run. In the game s final half, the Lady Bulldogs turned up the defensive pressure, forcing 13 of the Golden Lions 20 turnovers in the final stanza. The hosts sprinted from the second half gates, reeling off 12 straight points to open a advantage. Lumanu was one of five Lady Bulldogs in double figures. The 5-foot-9 junior had 20 points on 9 of 15 shooting from the field. Rack followed with 17 points, while Govero finished with 13 points. STARKVILLE, Miss. - Armelie Lumanu scored 24 points and Mississippi State fell just shy of the century mark as the Lady Bulldogs cruised past Northwestern State in women s college basketball action Sunday afternoon in the Humphrey Coliseum. With the victory, MSU improved to 2-0 for a third straight season. The offensive outburst was the largest for the Lady Bulldogs since a victory over Mississippi Valley State on January 8th of this year. Prior to that contest, the Lady Bulldogs had not topped the century mark in five seasons. Sunday s contest was offensive from the outburst. The lead changed hands several times during a very competitive, highly-entertaining opening half. The Lady Bulldogs stretched the lead in the closing minutes, claiming a advantage at halftime. In the second half, MSU s defensive pressure allowed the hosts to run away from the visiting Lady Demons. The Lady Bulldogs opened the final half on an 18-7 run. Later, a 12-2 run by the hosts removed all doubt from the contest. Lumanu tallied her 24 points on 8 of 10 shooting from the field and 8 of 9 shooting from the line. MVSU fell to 0-2 but battled much harder than a year ago, when MSU recorded a victory on this same floor. The Delta Devilettes actually held a 13-6 advantage at the 13:39 mark of the opening half. From there, MSU used an 18-2 run to take the lead for good in the contest. The Lady Bulldogs managed advantage at halftime and stretched the lead to as many as19 and 21 on two different occasions. The final margin was the largest lead in the contest. The Lady Bulldogs had a balanced offensive attack Tuesday night. Armelie Lumanu led MSU with 15 points, while Alexis Rack scored 12 points and Chanel Mokango scored 10 points. Lumanu provided a spark in the final half, scoring six straight points during a decisive 12-2 run. For the first time this season, the Lady Bulldogs were below 50 percent from the field. LAFAYETTE, La. - Two different 16-2 runs highlighted a high-octane first half of basketball as Mississippi State cruised past Louisiana-Lafayette in women s basketball action Friday afternoon at Earl K. Long Memorial Gym. MSU improved to 4-0 by winning its first game away from home for the season. Led by former MSU assistant Errol Rogers, the Cajuns fell to 0-6 on the season. MSU plays six of its first seven games at home this season. After celebrating the Thanksgiving holiday on the road yesterday, MSU can now focus on fall exams, sandwiched around a second three-game homestand. In the early stages Friday, MSU actually trailed 7-3. The Lady Bulldogs then used the next five minutes to piece together their first 16-2 run. MSU used defensive pressure to force four turnovers during that run. Donnisha Tate had three defensive rebounds during this run, which was capped by back-to-back baskets by Chanel Mokango. After a basket by ULL s Alexis Green, the guests then rolled off another 16-2 run. Tysheka Grimes and Mary Kathryn Govero provided the offensive spark for this run. MSU also received solid contributions from its bench, helping to maintain the early advantage. Thanks in part to the two runs, the Lady Bulldogs held a comfortable advantage at the break. In the final half, a 16-4 run by MSU allowed the guests to open up a advantage with 3:40 remaining. That run was again fueled by great defensive pressure and capped by a 3-point basket from Armelie Lumanu. The Mississippi State women s basketball team put up 97 points to continue their perfect season with a 72-point rout of Nicholls Sunday afternoon. Now 6-0 this season, the Lady Bulldog s margin of victory was the second largest in school history. The Lady Colonels fell to 0-5 on the season with the loss. The Lady Bulldogs got off to a strong start, scoring 54 points in the first half while only yielding 15 to Nicholls. In the second half, State continued its scoring attack and relentless pressure pushing its lead to as much as 75 late in the second half, holding Nicholls to just 10 points. The Lady Bulldogs had 12 players in the scoring column as they fell just two points shy of their season high total. Armelie Lumanu led the team in scoring for the second consecutive outing, with 24 points while adding nine rebounds. It was a back-and-forth battle through the first four minutes of the game, until a three-pointer by Mary Kathryn Govero, who had 14 points to go along with five rebounds and four assists, sparked a 17-2 Lady Bulldog run over the next seven minutes, eventually pushing Mississippi State s halftime lead to a MSU advantage. The Lady Bulldogs opened the second half on a 26-4 run. That outburst covered the first eight minutes of the second half and allowed MSU to overcome a halftime deficit. The victory improved MSU to 8-0 on the campaign. It is the second-best start in school history. The Lady Bulldogs opened the season with 11 straight victories. 13 GAME 12 #15/16 MARYALND 80, MISSISSIPPI STATE 73 DEC. 30, COLLEGE PARK, MD COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Mississippi State saw its season-opening 11-game win streak snapped, as the Lady Bulldogs fell to 14th-ranked Maryland in the championship game of the Terrapin Classic Tuesday afternoon. MSU had matched the team with its best start ever to a women s basketball season. The Lady Bulldogs failed to better that mark as the Lady Terrapins won their 26th straight game in the Comcast Center on the UM campus. The Lady Bulldogs (11-1) grabbed their only lead of the contest at 9-8 in the early stages of the game s opening half. The Lady Terrapins responded with a 16-1 run to open up a advantage with 9:48 left in the opening half. Maryland stretched the lead to 16 on four different occasions before settling for a lead at the intermission. In the opening half, Maryland (11-2) took advantage of a quicker, taller lineup to piece together a 65.4 percent shooting half from the floor. The Lady Terrapins hit 17 of 26 shot attempts in the opening half. That proved too much for an MSU squad, which was battling through foul issues for both Alexis Rack and Mary Kathryn Govero. Rack hit three 3-point baskets in the opening half but was slowed by three personal fouls. In the opening stages of the second half, the Lady Terrapins ran the lead to on a basket by Kristi Toliver. Back-to-back 3-point baskets by Rack sparked a 10-0 run as the Lady Bulldogs battled back to a deficit with 15:51 remaining. MSU would eventually close the deficit to five points at on a 3-point basket by Tysheka Grimes, followed by a steal and layup by Rack with 5:42 remaining. Maryland then scored the game s next eight points to move back out of danger. Rack paced the Lady Bulldogs with 24 points, including a 6 of 14 night from 3-point range. Robin Porter and Grimes were each in double figures, with 10 points apiece. Armelie Lumanu and Grimes each had a team-high six rebounds, while Lumanu also dished out five assists. Toliver led Maryland with 24 points and eight assists. Marah Strickland added four 3-point baskets and 16 total points, while Demauria Liles also had 16 points and a team-high eight rebounds. The Lady Bulldogs were 28 of 59 from the field (47.5 percent), 10 of 23 from 3- point range (43.5 percent) and 7 of 10 from the foul line (70.0 percent). MSU will face UAB at 7 p.m. Friday and Xavier at 2 p.m. Sunday. In the UAB contest, MSU will be trying to knock off its fourth Conference USA opponent.
