3 Head Coach Chuck Martin Fourth Season at Marist Monmouth, 1993 Chuck Martin is in his fourth season as head coach of the Red Foxes. On April 17, 2008, Martin was introduced as Marist s sixth head coach in its Division I history and ninth in program history. Arriving at Marist with the reputation of a tenacious recruiter, Martin has seen his recruits make immediate impacts on the program. Beginning with R.J. Hall s 2009 MAAC All-Rookie Team nod, many of Martin s recruits have worked their way into the starting lineups quickly and began making big plays. In the past two seasons, underclassmen have led the team in scoring, assists and, in , rebound per game averages. Two of Martin s recruits have earned MAAC All-Rookie Team honors. Martin was also instrumental in the development of Ryan Schneider. As a senior in the season, Schneider was named Second Team All-MAAC and Second Team Academic All-American by CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine. He then went on to play professional for two seasons in Portugal. In his first season at Marist, Martin guided the Red Foxes to 10 victories. Marist set a program record for fewest points allowed to a Division I opponent in a win over Hartford, and also set a MAAC Tournament record for fewest points allowed in a opening-round triumph over Iona. Martin came to Poughkeepsie after having spent the seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Memphis. The Tigers reached the national championship game in the season, and set a single-season Division I record for most victories with 38. The previous year, Memphis went 33-4 and reached the Elite Eight. The Tigers also became the first team in the history of Conference USA to compile a perfect regular season while winning the conference tournament. A native of the Bronx, Martin has served as a Division I assistant coach at five institutions. Prior to his time at Memphis, Martin was an assistant coach at St. John s University There,he played an integral role in helping upgrade the Red Storm s talent base. In January of 2006 campaign, St. John s recorded victories over two nationally-ranked opponents - then-undefeated Pittsburgh and Louisville - within a span of five days. Before heading to St. John s, Martin spent three years at Drexel University, where he worked under James Bruiser Flint. The Dragons reached the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament championship game in 2003, and earned postseason National Invitation Tournament berths in 2003 and Drexel compiled a record of in regularseason Colonial games in Martin s three years at the Philadelphia school. There, he helped develop former Marist assistant coach Bashir Mason, who became the first player in Colonial history to earn Defensive Player of the Year honors as a freshman. Martin also coached under Flint for one season at the University of Massachusetts, which came in the season. That year, the Minutemen reached the Atlantic-10 Tournament championship game. He began his collegiate coaching career as an assistant at Manhattan College during the season. Martin s strong roots in New York City helped land All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference players Muggsy Green, Jared Johnson and 2004 NBA Draft selection Luis Flores. Before embarking on his college coaching career, Martin served as camp director of the Eastern Invitational Basketball Camp. This experience enabled him to establish strong relationships on the East Coast with several of the top high schools, prep schools and AAU coaches. He also worked as an assistant coach at national powers St. Raymond s and LaSalle Academy in New York. Martin was an assistant at LaSalle from , when he worked with future NBA players Ron Artest and Shamgod Wells. In his time at St. Raymond s Martin tutored former NBA center Ernest Brown and All-America and Virginia standout Majestic Mapp. Martin, who played at St. Raymond s for three years, was inducted into the school s Hall of Fame in Martin began his college playing career at Champlain Junior College in Vermont, where he captained a pair of NJCAA tournament teams. He played his final two seasons at Monmouth University, where he played point guard and averaged 7.1 points per game. Martin is a 1993 graduate of Monmouth with a bachelor s degree in Communications. He and his wife, Lee, have three children a daughter, Ashley-Monet, and two sons, Jordan and Justin.

5 Marist vs. New Hampshire... This will be the fourth straight matchup between Marist and New Hampshire. The Red Foxes are 2-2 all-time versus the Wildcats. Their Jan. 2, 1983 matchup was the seventh of Marist s campaign. Only in their season did the Red Foxes play their seventh game later, Jan. 4, Marist vs. America East... The Red Foxes are all-time versus current America East schools: 7-9 vs. Vermont, 4-5 vs. Albany, 3-1 vs. Maine, 2-2 vs. Hartford, 2-2 vs. New Hampshire, 1-4 vs. Boston University and 0-2 vs. Binghamton. Marist dropped an earlier Nov. 19 meeting versus Vermont by a score of Last Time Out... Dec. 7 vs. Army... Led by Devin Price s 17 points, the Red Foxes came from behind to capture a win over the Black Knights. Staunch defending by the five-man lineup of Adam Kemp, Manny Thomas, Chavaughn Lewis, R.J. Hall and Price silenced Army down the stretch. The Black Knights scored just seven points over final 11:16 of the game. The five-man lineup did not leave the floor over final 7:50. Kemp and Thomas set career-highs with six and three blocks, respectively. Lewis netted final four points for Marist, including goahead jumper with 23 seconds remaining. On The National Scene... Aided by a 65 % (13-20) shooting day from three-point range on Sunday, Dec. 4 vs. Rider the Red Foxes find themselves 12th in the nation with a 42.6 Three-Point Field-Goal Percentage. They trail teams such as... #1 Creighton % #2 Indiana % #6 Pittsburgh % #11 North Carolina % Marist also sits 73rd in the nation with 4.6 blocks/game and 75th with PTM Individually, Adam Kemp is 41st in the nation with 2.3 blocked shots per game. Devin Price and his PT FG % would be top 25 nationally if his makes/game was in line with the rankings 2.5 made/game minimum. (Currently at 2.2 makes/game). Red Fox Newcomers... Marist welcomes four true freshmen onto its roster... T.J. Curry: 6-1/190, Guard, Brooklyn, N.Y. Martin on Curry: T.J. is a strong, crafty guard. Something positive always happens when he s on the floor. He s a winner. Chavaughn Lewis: 6-5/185, G/F, Queens, N.Y. Martin on Lewis: He will come in as one of the top freshmen in the MAAC. We expect big things out of Chavaughn. He s an exciting scorer, who will be fun for fans to watch. Isaiah Morton: 5-8/170, Guard, Richland, N.J. Martin on Morton: Isaiah is an explosive, little floor general. He s still learning some of the little things now, but his future is tremendous. Manny Thomas: 6-5/190, G/F, Brooklyn, N.Y. Martin on Thomas: Manny is an athletic, wiry player with a great deal of strength. We look forward to having him contribute as a freshman. New York State of Mind... With four freshmen from New York City (Morton originally grew up in Coney Island) joining the program, Chuck Martin, a Hall of Famer at St. Raymond s High School, now has six players from The Big Apple. Early Signees... On. Nov. 10, Head Coach Chuck Martin announced the signing of Eric Truog and Phillip Lawrence to National Letters of Intent. Truog, a 6-10 center from Bainbridge, Ohio/Kenston H.S., and Lawrence, a 6-7 forward from Baltimore, Md./ Mount St. Joseph, will join the program as true freshmen for the season. Martin on Truog: We re excited to have one of the best big men in Ohio join our program. He s a big, strong player, who will immediately add depth at the center position for us. Martin on Lawrence: He is a skilled four man, he comes from a well-coached, winning program at Mount St. Joseph. He will add much needed athleticism and depth to the four spot for us. 6 Mark Your Calendars... It was announced on Thursday, Nov. 24, that the Red Foxes would be heading to Orlando for the 2012 Old Spice Classic that will be held at the HP Field House at the ESPN Wide World Of Sports. The three-day tournament will consist of games on Nov. 22, Nov. 23 and Nov. 25 The eight-team field for the 2012 Old Spice Classic will feature Vanderbilt and Gonzaga, both preseason top 25 teams, along with Clemson, Davidson, Marist, Oklahoma, UTEP and West Virginia. Lewis - MAAC Rookie of the Week, Nov The freshman guard-forward earned the MAAC Rookie of the Week award following a career-high 23 points versus Colgate on Nov. 26. He played a huge role in the Red Foxes pulling away versus the Raiders as he scored 16 of his team s 20 points and turned a game into a lead over an 8:45 stretch of play in the second half. For the week, Lewis averaged 15.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.5 steals in just 26 minutes per game in matchups versus Bucknell and Colgate. Hall of Fame Tip-Off All-Tournament Team... Chavaughn Lewis was one of five players named to the All-Tournament team from the Springfield Bracket (Long Island/Vermont/Radford/Marist). Even more impressive was the fact that he scored his 32 points in just 50 total minutes off of the bench. Plus/Minus Statistics... Originally started as a hockey statistic, +/- measures the points for/points against for individual players, while they are on the court. Marist s most effective +/- player through nine games is Devin Price with a +9 (446 PF/437 PA) in 242:35 minutes of playing time. The Red Foxes most effective lineup combination this season is Morton-Price-Lewis-Thomas-Kemp with a 21 point advantage, 81 PF/60 PA, in 37:14 total minutes. In their last game versus Army, R.J.
