3 Chuck Martin First Season Career Record: 9-21 Monmouth/1993 On April 17, 2008, Chuck Martin was hired as the sixth head coach in Marist's Division I history. He arrives in Poughkeepsie having had the opportunity to work for some of the premier coaches in the game while recruiting and coaching high-level talent. Martin comes to Poughkeepsie after having spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Memphis. The Tigers reached the national championship game in the season, and set a single-season Division I record for most victories with 38. Martin helped to recruit and develop freshman point guard Derrick Rose, who was selected first overall in the 2008 NBA Draft by the Chicago Bulls. Two more Memphis players - Joey Dorsey and Chris Douglas-Roberts - were also chosen in the draft. In the campaign, Memphis went 33-4 and reached the Elite Eight. The Tigers also became the first team in the history of Conference USA to compile a perfect regular season while winning the conference tournament, a feat which was duplicated this past season. A native of the Bronx, Martin has served as a Division I assistant coach at five institutions. Prior to his time at Memphis, Martin was an assistant coach at St. John's University from There, he played an integral role in helping upgrade the Red Storm's talent base. In January of 2006 campaign, St. John's recorded victories over two nationally-ranked opponents - then-undefeated Pittsburgh and Louisville - within a span of five days. Before heading to St. John's, Martin spent three years at Drexel University, where he worked under James "Bruiser" Flint. The Dragons reached the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament championship game in 2003, and earned postseason National Invitation Tournament berths in 2003 and Drexel compiled a record of in regular-season Colonial games in Martin's three years at the Philadelphia school. There, he helped develop current Marist assistant coach Bashir Mason, who became the first player in Colonial history to earn Defensive Player of the Year honors as a freshman. Martin also coached under Flint for one season at the University of Massachusetts, which came in the season. That year, the Minutemen reached the Atlantic-10 Tournament championship game. He began his collegiate coaching career as an assistant at Manhattan College during the season. Before embarking on his college coaching career, Martin served as camp director of the Eastern Invitational Basketball Camp. This experience enabled him to establish strong relationships on the East Coast with several of the top high schools, prep schools and AAU coaches. He also worked as an assistant coach at national powers St. Raymond's and LaSalle Academy in New York. Martin was an assistant at LaSalle from , when he worked with future NBA players Ron Artest and Shamgod Wells. In his time at St. Raymond's, Martin tutored former NBA center Ernest Brown and All-America and Virginia standout Majestic Mapp. Martin, who played at St. Raymond's for three years, was inducted into the school's Hall of Fame in Martin began his college playing career at Champlain Junior College in Vermont, where he captained a pair of NJCAA tournament teams. He played his final two seasons at Monmouth University, where he played point guard and averaged 7.1 points per game. Martin is a 1993 graduate of Monmouth with a bachelor's degree in Communications. He and his wife, Lee, have three children -- a daughter, Ashley-Monet (11), and two sons, Jordan (6) and Justin (3).

13 On This Date In Marist History March 1, Marist closed out its regular season with a home victory over Robert Morris. A week later, the Red Foxes would defeat Fairleigh Dickinson in overtime to advance to the first NCAA Tournament. an abundance of new faces for the season. Head Coach Chuck Martin was hired on April 17, 2008 as the program s sixth head coach in its Division I history. Marist also has an entirely new coaching staff, consisting of assistants Paul Lee, Tyrone Weeks, Bashir Mason and director of men s basketball operations Will Lanier. The Red Foxes also have nine newcomers this season (Dorvell Carter, Casiem Drummond, Pat McDerby, Daye Kaba, R.J. Hall, Alex Vouyoukas, Nick Amicucci, Mike Taylor and Javon Parris). LOTS TO REPLACE: The 10 players the Red Foxes lost from their team combined for 70 percent of the team s points, 66 percent of the team s rebounds, 71 percent of the team s three-pointers made, 72 percent of the team s starts and 65 percent of the minutes played last season. ONLY NEW FACE IN THE MAAC: Head Coach Chuck Martin is the lone newcomer among MAAC head coaches this season. AN EXPERIENCED STAFF: New Head Coach Chuck Martin has assembled a coaching staff with considerable experience. The entire staff (assistant coaches Paul Lee, Tyrone Weeks and Bashir Mason and director of operations Will Lanier) has combined for three apperances in national championship games, four appearances in the Final Four, 40 seasons of Division I coaching experience, positions at 11 different Division I institutions and 14 years of Division I playing experience. MAAC PROJECTIONS: The Red Foxes were picked to finish last among the MAAC s 10 team in the conference s preseason poll. Red-shirt junior point guard David Devezin was named Preseason Third Team All- MAAC. MEDIA MAN: Red-shirt senior forward Ryan Schneider spent this past summer interning at WFAN (660 AM) in New York City. Schneider has also gained broadcasting experience through Marist s campus radio station (WMAR), where he hosts a sports-talk show and has called women s basketball games. He has provided color analysis for Marist women s basketball broadcasts at the MAAC Tournament each of the last two seasons. This season, Schneider is serving as a sideline reporter on select broadcasts of Marist women s television broadcasts on Time Warner Cable 6. GETTING EXPOSURE: Red-shirt senior forward Ryan Schneider was featured in a New York Times story written by Brian Heyman on Jan. 16 which discussed his basketball and broadcasting. Schneider s call of the Marist women s basketball game against Fairfield on Jan. 23 for WMAR was picked up by ESPNU as part of its Campus Connection week. RED FOXES ON THE AIRWAVES: All Marist games will broadcast on WKIP (1450 AM) in Poughkeepsie and streamed live on GoRedFoxes.com through Stretch Internet. Ed Weir is in his 31st season of broadcasting Marist athletics, and Dean Darling is in his 26th season with the Red Foxes. Nine games will be broadcast on Time Warner Cable 6, with Darling and former Red Fox Steve Eggink on the call. The Red Foxes had both of their games in the Holiday Festival televised by MSG.
