1 Kansas City, Mo. (Swinney) 2 p.m. Kangaroos Open Exhibition Season Against Oklahoma Panhandle State University exhibition game 1 Saturday, November 3 2 p.m. Kansas City, Mo. Swinney Recreation Center (1,500) The UMKC women s basketball team is set to embark on the first full season of the Candace White-Whitaker era on Saturday afternoon, hosting Oklahoma Panhandle State University. This game is the lone preseason tune-up on the schedule for the Kangaroos before they begin a whirlwind stretch that sees them play four contests over an eight-day span, including a season opener away from home. Tip off for the duel between the Kangaroos and the Aggies is set for 2 p.m. at Swinney Recreation Center. About The Aggies Oklahoma Panhandle State University is led by first-year head coach Brad Vanden Boogaard. Vanden Boogaard returned to OPSU after a one-year stint as head coach of the men s program at Presentation College, where he guided the Saints to a 9-15 overall mark, with a 6-8 record in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference. He previously served as an assistant coach for the women s squad as well as Assistant Athletics Director at OPSU, with previous coaching stops at Triton Junior College and Loras College. The Aggies return only seven players from last year s squad, six of whom were seniors. Sarah Polson s 10.6 points per game were the second-best on the team, and she added 58 assists and 42 steals. The senior is the only consistent starter to return, as she got the nod in 22 of 27 contests last year, although fellow seniors Alisha Sladek and Sedra Watkins were also solid contributors with 16 and 14 starts respectively. In Mid-Con play, she guided her squad to a 6-8 overall record and a tie for fifth place in the Mid-Con regular season standings. Alysa Klein was selected as a first team all-conference selection, while Stephanie Brown was an honorable mention all-league honoree. Chazny Morris, meanwhile, was selected to the all-newcomer squad, and she was named the Mid-Con Newcomer of the Year. From , White-Whitaker served as an assistant coach for the Kangaroos under Overton. During the campaign, UMKC improved three games in the Mid-Con regular season race, as they finished with an even 8-8 mark. In the regular season finale, UMKC became one of two league teams to post a win at, a venue where the Westerwinds had previously won 46-consecutive games. White-Whitaker guided Brown to first team all-conference and all-newcomer honors, as well as to the Newcomer of the Year accolade. Brown was the first UMKC player to be awarded the accomplishment. In her inaugural year in Kansas City, White-Whitaker helped guide the Kangaroos to the championship game of the 2005 Mid-Continent Tournament. It was the first time that any UMKC basketball team (men s or women s) had played in a tournament final. Overall, UMKC finished overall and 5-11 in the league. Under her guidance, three players earned all-conference honors. Katie Houlehan was a first team all-league selection, while Klein was named to the all-newcomer team. Houlehan, Klein and Sammi Knapic were all selected to the 2005 Mid-Con all-tournament team. Prior to her appointment at UMKC, White-Whitaker spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Valparaiso. While at VALPO, she helped the team to two straight Mid-Continent Conference Tournament championships, two NCAA Tournament berths and two 20-win seasons. The NCAA appearances were the first in the history of the school. White-Whitaker arrived at Valparaiso after playing at Texas Tech for two seasons ( ). She led the team to a pair of Sweet Sixteen appearances as the Lady Raiders starting point guard under legendary coach Marsha Sharp. Prior to her two seasons at Texas Tech, she played two years at Seward County Community College in Liberal, Kan., where her team was ranked number one in the nation in after finishing fifth nationally the season before. By The Numbers Discounting the difference in the level of the opposition, the two teams are remarkably similar on the stat sheet. UMKC averaged 56.1 pts/gm to 63.8 for OPSU, but UMKC has a better overall field-goal percentage at.383 to.378. The Kangaroos open the campaign with a road contest on November 9 before returning home to face the Lady Falcons of the following Sunday. After a mid-week jaunt to Lawrence to take on Kansas, UMKC wraps up the busy stretch with a home game against Northern Colorado on November 17. The Kangaroos will be rewarded for the busy start with a holiday break, however, as UMKC is not scheduled to play a contest for a 12-day span stretching between December 19 and January 2. Early Returns From The Polls UMKC landed two players on all-conference teams during the preseason polling of coaches, media and sports information directors in The Summit League. Alysa Klein was tabbed as a first team honoree, while Chazny Morris was named to the second team. The Kangaroos fell two spots in this year s preseason rankings, as they were predicted to finish seventh out of the league s 10 teams. was again selected as the preseason favorite despite garnering only 10 first-place votes to 14 for debutantes South Dakota State University. Block Party After setting a new Division I-era single-season record with 73 blocks last season, Alysa Klein sits just six blocks shy of the top career mark of 144, held by Lauren Powers. The Okoboji, Iowa, native s career average of 1.6 blks/gm is the third best in program history, and projects to a final mark of 170. However, a double-century mark is not out of reach should the senior return to the pace she enjoyed on the season. Youth Is Served Sophomore Chazny Morris made an immediate impact after winning a spot in the starting rotation a third of the way through the season. She finished the year averaging 8.9 pts/gm, good for third on the team and enough to earn a spot on the all-newcomer team and win the 2007 Mid-Con Newcomer of the Year award - marking the second consecutive season that a Kangaroo laid claim to the honor. She finished with a.440 mark from beyond the arc, the bestever single-season freshman (and third-best overall) mark in program history. After capping her season with a 21-point performance against in the Mid-Con Tournament, Morris looks to grow into a leadership role as an underclassman this year for the Kangaroos. Dialing From Distance UMKC will look to bring the three-ball back into the act this season after a bit of a slump in the season. Despite holding opponents to just a.331 clip from beyond the arc last year, UMKC struggled with its own shooting from distance, mustering just a.296 clip, finishing the season with 12 fewer three-point than in despite having an extra game on the slate. Chazny Morris will be counted upon to continue her shooting success, with Brittny Picconi looking to w w w. u m k c k a n g a r o o s. c o m

Seward County Connections With her success as a player at Seward County (Kan.) Community College, it is only reasonable that head coach Candace White-Whitaker would look close to home on the recruiting trail. Senior Sierra Radke and junior Taushelle Rushing both come to the Kangaroos following successful careers with the Knights. Youth Is Served Again... Currently the youngest head coach at the Division I level, Candace White-Whitaker is also one of the youngest head coaches in recent women s basketball history. At the time of her appointment as the interim head coach last year, White-Whitaker was just 26 years, 239 days old. She comes from a strong background of young coaches, as her mentor at Valparaiso, Keith Freeman, made his entry into the profession at the tender age of 19. Freeman helmed the women s basketball team at Huntington (Ind.) College during the season. Although impressive, White-Whitaker isn t even the youngest head coach at her own institution. That honor belongs to Meredith Smith, head softball coach, who was a mere 25 years, 166 days old at the time of her appointment. UMKC has a history of taking a chance on young coaches, as no fewer than nine coaches have been appointed before their 30th birthday. Angela Garbe was the youngest, taking the reins of the women s tennis team in September 1991 at the age of 22 years, 264 days. Texas Home Cooking In addition to his local ties - he served as an assistant coach at the University of Missouri from 1998 to associate head coach Brett Schneider claims the same hometown as head coach Candace White-Whitaker. A strong recruiter, Schneider has a strong family background in basketball, as his father Bob claimed over 1,000 victories over a 43-year career. His brother, Brandon, currently serves as head women s basketball coach for Emporia State University, while his sister, Brooke, was a letterwinner at West Texas A&M. Kangaroo Recruiting Class Ranked 38th In The Nation UMKC s 2007 recruiting class was ranked the 38th-best in the nation by the Dan Olson Collegiate Girls Basketball Report. This is the first time that a UMKC women s basketball recruiting class has been recognized by a national publication. In addition to the name change, the league welcomes three new schools to the mix for the season., University and South Dakota State University join the conference to push its ranks to 10.
