UMKC closes out its only road trip of January on Monday night, facing off against the Jaguars at the Gymnasium, known better as The Jungle. The game, marking the second straight with UMKC facing a team it sits deadlocked with in the Mid-Con standings, is set for a 6 p.m. (CST) tip-off. The Series has had the better of the series in recent memory, taking three of the four most recent meetings between the teams including a season sweep last year. The Kangaroos have been victorious in six of the teams prior 16 meetings, with their last win a blowout of the Jaguars on Feb. 12, Last Time Out The UMKC women's basketball team opened the first road trip of 2007 in Rochester, Mich., taking on on Saturday afternoon. Despite a near-perfect effort from the Kangaroo's post players, was able to run out winners on the day. The first half was a story of spurts. UMKC opened up a 7-2 lead over the first 3:19, with a pair of Alysa Klein layups bookending a three-point play by Stephanie Brown. responded with a run of its own, scoring 10 unanswered points in just over four minutes, before the Kangaroos fired back with a 7-0 run to hold a lead with 9:27 left in the half. The Golden Grizzlies took advantage of a cold-shooting UMKC team to embark on an 18-5 run to take a lead they would never relinquish. Klein had the only points for the Kangaroos during the run, as she sank a three-pointer and a layup during the nearly sevenminute stretch. pushed its lead to 14 points by the half, going into the locker room up UMKC Against... White guided junior Stephanie Brown to first team all-conference and all-newcomer honors, as well as to the Newcomer of the Year accolade. Brown was the first UMKC player to be awarded the accomplishment. In her inaugural year in Kansas City, White helped guide the Kangaroos to the championship game of the Mid-Continent Tournament. Overall, UMKC finished overall and 5-11 in the league. Under her guidance, three players earned all-conference honors. Katie Houlehan was a first team allleague selection, while Alysa Klein was named to the allnewcomer team. Houlehan, Klein and Sammi Knapic were all selected to the 2005 Mid-Con all-tournament team. Picconi and Brown combined to pull UMKC within 14, as the Kangaroos tried to keep the game close. Picconi hit a trey at the 15:56 mark and Brown forced a turnover and steal on the ensuing possession, converting a pair of free throws as she was fouled in the process. was up to the challenge however, pushing the lead back to 18, where it would hover for the rest of the game. Brown led all scorers in the game with 17 points, hitting on all five of her efforts from the floor and all seven of her trips to the charity stripe. Picconi and Klein added 11 and nine points respectively for the Kangaroos, with Klein shooting 4-of-5 from the floor. Unfortunately for UMKC, the hot shooting from Klein and Brown was the exception, as the team finished hitting 27.3 (15-55) percent from the floor and 28.6 (6-21) percent from three-point range. struggled from distance, hitting 21.4 (3-14) percent from three-point range, but hit at a 44.0 (22-50) percent clip overall. The Golden Grizzlies were led by Nicole Piggott with 16 points, with Jessica Pike and Hanna Reising chipping in 13 and 10 points apiece. held a large edge on the glass, outrebounding UMKC About is a team rebuilding, retuning only two starters and six letterwinners from last year s team. The Jaguars finished last season 17-11, going 11-5 in Mid-Con action. The squad wrapped up a second-place finish in the regular season but couldn t parlay that into success in the Mid-Con Championship Tournament. On the season, has struggled, picking up just seven wins in 17 games. The Jaguars have managed a.500 record in conference play, good for a three-way tie for fourth with UMKC and Southern Utah. Jernisha Cann and Tamika Mays lead the Jags on the offensive end of the floor, averaging 12.9 and 11.5 points/game respectively. Cann also paces the team off the glass, pulling down 9.1 rebounds per contest. As a team, has averaged just below 60 points per game on the Pronunciations Jowan - JOE-ann Waalen - WALL-en Leigh - LEE Picconi - pick-own-ee year. The Jaguars have turned the ball over 317 times to 312 for their opponents, although they hold a better assist-to-turnover ratio, having dished out 257 helpers to only 230 for their opponents. The Century Club UMKC's 103-point outburst against Rockhurst was as exciting as it was rare, as the feat marked the first time since the season that the UMKC women s basketball team scored 100 points or more. The previous century mark came against Chicago State on Feb. 20, It also marks the second highest point total of the Division I era at UMKC - coincidentally also coming against Chicago State - as the Kangaroos scored 109 points in a Feb. 20, 1988 rout of the Cougars. The Century Club Too Jowan Ortega moved into the century club against Oral Roberts and currently has 102 appearances as a Kangaroo. Barring injury, Ortega should move into the top-10 in career games played, with a projected career mark of 113. A solid run by the Kangaroos in the Mid-Con Tournament could leave Ortega level with Katie Houlehan in the fifth spot on the list. Ortega passed the 2,500-minute mark at Wichita State earlier this season, currently sitting with 2,879 career minutes. Post-It Note Post players Alysa Klein and Stephanie Brown shouldered much of the offensive load during the early part of the season for the Kangaroos. Klein leads the Kangaroo offense, averaging 11.5 points per game, while Brown's 9.7 points/gm average is good for third on the team. The pair have also been solid shooters, combining for a.514 ( ) mark from the floor on the season. Klein is also having a career season around the basket, pulling down 124 rebounds (6.5 per game), good for second on the team, and swatting 52 blocks (2.84 per game) to pace the Kangaroos and the Mid-Con in that category. She's A Freshman? Freshman Chazny Morris was a big part of UMKC's season-opening win over Northern Colorado, leading the Kangaroos with 17 points. During UMKC's first-half run, Morris dropped 11 points on the Bears on 4-of-5 shooting. She added two assists, a block and a rebound in the contest, finishing the 3

4 game shooting.857 (6-7) from the floor. She has continued to show poise throughout the season, averaging 7.2 points per game to rank fourth on the team. At Oklahoma Christian, she tallied her first career double-double, scoring 14 points and grabbing 10 rebounds - eight coming off the offensive glass - in the win. She recorded her first career start at Saint Louis, scoring 14 points on 6-of-11 shooting, adding four rebounds and two assists in a team-high 32-minute outing. Opening With Success With its win over Southern Utah, UMKC pulled to a 7-7 record in Mid-Con openers. The last time the Kangaroos came away victorious in a conference opener was the final season of Dana Eikenberg s tenure, where UMKC downed rival Oral Roberts The 16-point margin of victory was the second-highest by the Kangaroos in a conference opener, and the first time the Kangaroos were victorious by more than 10 points since they downed Central Connecticut State by a count on Jan. 2, Brown Named Player of the Week Senior Stephanie Brown earned Mid-Con Player of the Week honors for last week, following her offensive outbursts against Southern Utah and Chicago State. The honor is the first for a UMKC player this season and marks the third time Brown has received the honor. Against Southern Utah she nearly missed a double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbing nine rebounds, following that performance up with a season-high 21 points in a dominating performance from the low post against Chicago State. In the game, Brown missed only one shot from the floor, finishing with a.900 clip. She also added two assists, two blocks and three steals on the afternoon. On The Road Again After a grueling non-conference schedule that saw the Kangaroos have only four home games - earning lots of frequent-flyer miles in the process - UMKC was repaid nicely to start 2007 with four games at home. This weekend marks the only two road contests for the Kangaroos in January, as they return home to close out the month after games at and. Shuffle Up And Deal With the departure of Bo Overton, who became the head coach and general manager of the WNBA s Chicago Sky earlier this season, the coaching staff for the Kangaroos has undergone a bit of a shuffle. Candace White was named Interim Head Coach, with Ron Anderson taking the title of Interim Associate Head Coach. Chelsea Domenico also gets a new title and new responsibilities, becoming an Assistant Coach. A Case Of The Mondays? Although most folks dread Mondays, UMKC has seemed to enjoy the beginning of the work week this season. In four contests held on Mondays during the season, the Kangaroos have been victorious in three. UMKC knocked off Chicago State twice on Mondays, also winning over Mid- Con foe Centenary. The Numbers Don't Lie? Looking at the win-loss breakdowns by statistical category yields several trends for the Kangaroos. Most of the trends make a lot of sense, but there are two categories that run a bit odd, to say the least. UMKC has six games so far on the season where it has taken more trips to the free-throw line than the opponent. The Kangaroos are finally starting to take advantage of charity, although they started the season 0-4 in those contests. UMKC's opponents have shot better than than 80 percent from the line in only four contests, but UMKC has been victorious in only four of those remaining 15. Lucky Number 13? So far this season, Alysa Klein has posted three double-doubles, two coming in back-to-back games at Kansas and against Boston University. In both outings, she pulled down 13 rebounds, marking a team-high contribution. The mark off the glass also matched her career high, as Klein has grabbed 13 boards in four contests throughout her UMKC career. Coincidentally, Klein wears jersey number 13, appears on page 13 of the game notes for UMKC and is currently averaging just under 13 points per game. Halfway Done? Although the results haven t always been the best for UMKC, the halftime result has almost always held up at the end of the contest for the Kangaroos. In the 18 games where one team held a margin at the half, the trailing team was able to overcome the deficit only once, as UMKC holds a 5-1 record in games where it leads at the half and a 0-12 record in games where it trails at the half. Fortunately for UMKC, a level score at the break has borne out better, as the Kangaroos finished victorious (at Chicago State, Dec. 18, 2006) in the only game with a tied halftime score. Swat You Very Much Junior Alysa Klein has quickly climbed up the career blocks list at UMKC, averaging 31.5 blocks per season in her first two years as a Kangaroo. This season is a breakout season for Klein, as she equaled her season output with just over a third of the schedule gone. She is on pace to finish the 29-game regular season schedule with 82 blocks, a new single-season record. It would also give her the top spot on the career list and a full season to extend the lead. She currently sits in second, needing only 27 blocks to take the top spot. 1. Lauren Powers ( ) Alysa Klein (2004-pres.) Joy Ommen ( ) LaRonna Lassiter ( ) Georgia Bivens ( ) 61 Nationally Ranked Alysa Klein's breakout season has garnered UMKC a mention in the national rankings. Klein's 2.9 blk/gm mark is good for 14th place in the national standings. As a team, the Kangaroos have moved into the top 20, sitting in 14th place averaging 5.7 blks/gm. UMKC is tied with Louisville and Xavier for the slot, although both of those schools have one additional game on the books. Looking at the raw numbers, UMKC is tied for 14th with South Carolina at 103. Klein's seven-block effort against Kansas is also good for the 17th-best single-game mark. She is tied with several other players at seven, with the Division I best sitting at 11. Block Party With Alysa Klein having a career season in blocks, it is easy to overlook the rest of the team's performance. UMKC dominates the block category in the Mid-Con, with better than double that of any other team, but even discounting Klein's contributions, UMKC would still top the overall standings in the Mid-Con with 53 blocks on the season for a 2.79 blk/gm average. Against The Mid-Con With two full weeks of conference play in the books, UMKC stands in decent stead compared to its conference opponents. Overall, UMKC holds the best field-goal percentage defense mark in the league, holding its foes to a 37.8 ( ) percent clip on the campaign. UMKC has four players in the top-25 scoring list for the Mid-Con overall, led by Alysa Klein in 9th place with 11.5 pts/gm. Brittny Picconi ( th), Stephanie Brown (9.7-16th) and Chazny Morris (7.2-25th) round out the list for the Kangaroos. Looking just at conference games shuffles up the order a little bit, with only Morris falling off the list. Picconi moves into a sixthplace tie in the conference, averaging 12.3 pts/gm in conference action, followed by Brown ( th-t) and Klein (9.5-14th). Sweet Home Swinney Although the Kangaroos aren't quite perfect in the friendly confines of Swinney Recreation Center, the home venue has been quite conducive to strong performances. In every game at Swinney this season, at least one player has enjoyed a season-best performance. Chazny Morris opened the books, scoring 17 points against Northern Colorado. Stephanie Brown cleaned up the glass on the team's return, pulling down 14 rebounds against Central Arkansas. Brown would set her season-superlative scoring mark in the third game at Swinney for UMKC, dropping 21 points on Chicago State. Brittny Picconi wiped out Brown's best en route to her own season-tops 22-point outburst against Centenary. 4

5 Seeing Double In all but five contests this season, the Kangaroos have had at least two players score in double figures. UMKC has had seven different players finish a contest in double-digits on the season, led by Klein with 11 games. In one stretch this season, Klein finished with better than 10 points in six consecutive games. Seeing Double-double Double-doubles were a common sight last year, as senior Stephanie Brown set a UMKC single-season record with 13 on the campaign, including three straight. That streak was part of a nine-game run that saw Brown post double figure games in either scoring or rebounding, finishing with six double-doubles in the run. Alysa Klein got into the spirit as well, posting a 12 pt., 10 reb. outing against Centenary. Klein set the early pace this season, notching back-to-back doubledoubles at Kansas and against Boston University, matching a career-high 13 rebound mark in both efforts. Brown has responded, however, recording her third double-double of the season against Central Arkansas with 16 pts. and 14 reb. on the night. Freshman Chazny Morris joined the party at Oklahoma Christian, recording a double-double (14 pts., 10 reb.) alongside Klein (18 pts., 10 reb.) on the night. Season Double-Doubles Stephanie Brown, 11 Colorado State - 18 pts, 10 reb. Alysa Klein, 16 Kansas - 16 pts, 13 reb. Alysa Klein, 18 Nov. vs. Boston Univ pts, 13 reb. Alysa Klein, 1 Oklahoma Christian - 18 pts, 10 reb. Chazny Morris, 1 Oklahoma Christian - 14 pts, 10 reb. Stephanie Brown, 9 Dec. vs. Kansas St pts, 10 reb. Stephanie Brown, 20 Dec. vs. Central Arkansas - 16 pts, 14 reb. Taking Full Advantage Despite only playing in 19 games for the Kangaroos, Brittny Picconi was the team s second-highest scorer on the season, leading the team in scoring average. Her 12.8 points per contest would have given the junior 358 points on the season, good for ninth in the Mid-Con. Although the junior is a bit below her pace from last year, she is still on pace to break 300 points this season. Mead From Three In only one season at UMKC, senior transfer Leigh Mead snuck in the back door, climbing to ninth all-time on the career three-pointer list for the Kangaroos, with 65 treys. Should Mead duplicate her numbers from last year, she would move to third best all-time, leading the top-10 in treys per game. With 18 makes on the season - in somewhat limited action - Mead is in eighth spot on the list, edging closer to the sixth-place tie. 1. Katie Houlehan ( ) Veda McNeal ( ) Kaycee Kapels ( ) Julie Jenson ( ) Kelly Walden ( ) Latasha Jackson ( ) 85 Sammi Knapic ( ) Leigh Mead (2005-pres.) Sara Atalla ( ) 69 Stealing Her Way To The Top Jowan Ortega moved into sole possession of fifth place on the carer steals list with four steals against Oral Roberts, now sitting on 176 for her career. Should she stay at her career pace of 1.7 steals per game, she could easily cruise into the fourth spot on the list. With a breakout year to rival her sophomore record of 72 steals, she could solidify a fourth-place standing. 1. Stephanie Worthy ( ) Penny Waggener ( ) Laurie Smith ( ) Meredith Wilcox ( ) Jowan Ortega (2003-pres.) Valerie Quarles ( ) Veda McNeal ( ) 148 Sheila Wynn ( ) 148 Jennifer Sposato ( ) 148 Youth Is Served When she was named Interim Head Coach, Candace White became one of the youngest Division I head coaches in recent history. At the age of 26 years, 239 days at the time of her appointment, she is currently the youngest women's basketball head coach in the Mid-Con. White comes from a background of young coaches, having worked under Keith Freeman at. Freeman began coaching at the tender age of 19, when he was named head women's basketball coach at Huntington (Ind.) College for the season. Youth Is Served Again One head coach under the age of 30 is a rarity, but the Kangaroos can claim four. While Candace White is the youngest women's basketball head coach in the Mid-Continent Conference, impressively she isn't even the youngest head coach at UMKC. Meredith Smith (softball) holds that honor at the young age of 25. Current women s tennis coach Brad Scott and men s golf coach J.W. VanDenBorn are also part fo the youth contingent at UMKC, at 26 and 28 years of age, respectively. UMKC has somewhat of a history of young head coaches, with no fewer than nine coaches in the history of the program having been appointed to the head coaching position before their 30th birthday. Angela Garbe was the youngest, appointed head coach of the women s tennis team in September 1991 at the age of 22 years, 264 days. Senior Leaders During the season, the Kangaroos will rely heavily upon the leadership of their three seniors, Jowan Ortega, Leigh Mead and Stephanie Brown. Ortega is the most experienced of the trio a three-year letterwinner for UMKC and led the team in steals, with 44 on the campaign. That mark ranked sixth in the Mid-Con, but Ortega also contributed offensively, dishing out 106 assists and averaging 7.9 points per game. Brown and Mead should provide solid leadership on the offensive end of the floor, averaging 12.5 and 7.4 points per game respectively during the season. Kangaroos Picked Fifth in Pre-Season Poll In preseason polling of coaches, SIDs and selected media members, UMKC was tabbed to finish in fifth place in the Mid-Con standings. Oral Roberts is the preseason favorite to win the league, garnering 12 first -place votes en route to 237 total points. was picked second, receiving 213 points on the strength of 5 first-place votes. totted 177 points (3 firstplace votes) to take third with nabbing the remaining two firstplace nods and a fourth-place rank with 156 points. UMKC was chosen to finish in the same spot it ended the season, earning 145 points to edge out defending Mid-Con Tournament champion, who earned 142 points. Southern Utah (65) and Centenary (41) rounded out the voting. Preseason Accolades For Brown, Picconi Following up on her first-team all-conference, all-newcomer team and Newcomer of the Year honors from , Stephanie Brown earned firstteam all-conference accolades in the preseason polling. Joining Brown on the first team were Tamra Braun (), Jernisha Cann (), Nicole Piggott (), Betsy Rietema () and preseason Mid-Con Player of the Year Elisha Turek (Oral Roberts). Brown wasn t the only Kangaroo to make coaches sit up and take notice, however. Brittny Picconi also earned individual honors with a spot on the second team. Joining Picconi on the second team are: Jenny Hardin (Oral Roberts), Tanika Mays (), Carrie Myers () and Holli Wilkins (Centenary). New Faces In The Mob UMKC added three players in the off-season, looking to replace Sammi Knapic and Liz Obrecht. Chazny Morris was the first signing for the Kangaroos, inking her commitment to UMKC during the early signing period. Morris joins the Kangaroos from Piedmont High School in, Calif., 5

6 where she led her team to a 35-2 record and a California state championship. Myleka Emerson is the other freshman signee for UMKC, reuniting with Morris the pair played together for two seasons at El Cerrito High School to play for the Kangaroos. Emerson was twice named to the all-accal first team, closing out her high school career averaging 14.1 points and 3.0 assists per game. Sierra Radke rounds out the newcomer class for the Kangaroos. A junior transfer from Seward County Community College, she averaged 9.8 points and 3.2 assists per game for the Lady Saints, finishing her career with 104 treys, good for fifth all-time on the career list at SCCC. Radke's squad finished with a 37-7 record in , good for a fifth-place finish at the NJCAA National Tournament. In addition to the new players on the court for the Kangaroos this season, there are a pair of new faces on the UMKC coaching staff. Whitney Law joins the staff as an assistant coach. She comes to UMKC after a solid playing career, with a year at Georgia before finishing her career at Colorado. She finished her career ranked 17th on the CU assist average list, and was a two-time Academic all-big 12 selection. Also coming to the Kangaroo staff from the Big 12 is Chelsea Domenico. Originally named Administrative Coordinator for the Kangaroos, Domenico was a four-year letterwinner at Kansas State. She finished her career atop the assist-to-turnover ratio leaderboard - at and holds the fourth, fifth and sixth-best single-season marks in Kansas State history, capped by a 2.0 mark as a senior. In And Out The Kangaroos returned a large portion of the squad percent of the scoring impact for UMKC returns for the campaign, along with 77.6 percent of the team rebounding. Attendance Moves UMKC found itself among heady company - including Oklahoma, North Carolina, Duke and Illinois - at the conclusion of the season. The Kangaroos average home attendance increased from 531 per game in to 1,473 in , the 10th best increase among Division I institutions. The Kangaroos nearly bested Illinois, falling just 21 fans per game of the Big 10 foe. Middle Tennessee State was the biggest mover, increasing their average attendance by nearly 300 percent - jumping from 695/gm in to 2,699/gm in That Which Doesn t Kill You...
